I've been a MGC member for 5 yrs now, and I've never visited the deck. I'm not a beer guy, so flask has been SOP since I was a student. The deck just never held that much appeal to me, my seats were better for watching the game, I met up with anyone I wanted to in the Blue Parking lot at the Bus. I chalked up the $500 MGC donation as a way to get great parking and the cost to be the boss. At 31, with a 2 yr old and another due in Feb, and living in Florida right now, it totally makes Club level out of my reach, but trust, I'll be working my rear off for the next 5 years to come up with the $6K for the wife and I's 2 club level seats for when we return to the metroplex. I'll be purchasing a paver stone, re-upping my Alumni membership, MGC membership and grabbing 2 season tickets to the lower bowl, even though I'll be there for 1 game for sure. And who would've thought there'd be so much debate on the Scoreboard set-up... too funny. If you put it behind the wing, then you detract from the appeal the stadium has from I35, you know our marketing machine. I agree though, I thought the view from the AC to the stadium was going to be classy, all good, I'll be there in Sept, loving every second of it, enjoying the 15 concession stands and trying to use every toilet in the stadium. I was really liking our current uniforms. I know I will probably be scolded for saying this, but I did not like the look of the uniforms prior to switching to Under Armour. I have a few suggestions when designing new uniforms: 1. Keep the same kelly green we already have. Please don't throw in another shade of green into the mix. 2. Incorporate both white & black into the uniform. I did not like having the same color jersey and pants (circa 2000) 3. Either keep the North Texas that we already have on the helmet or just put the players number on the side. (think Alabama) 4. KEEP THE WHITE HELMETS!! Just cause we're the Mean Green doesn't mean we have to be covered in it from head-to-toe. The new uniforms can be tastefully designed to represent us being the Mean Green without overdoing it.6 points

I stumbled upon Coach McCarney in the UNT Bookstore yesterday. I overheard him saying that he's now hired all of his staff (not sure if thats news or not) and that he was there to buy all of his staff gift cards to the book store. He was also talking very enthusiastically to the store manager about next year's home opener and the need to fill the stadium. I guess that makes me a bit of a creep to eavesdrop, but what the hey5 points

At MGC Rep training, someone said that RV wanted people in there seats during the game rather than hanging out in a party deck. (paraphrasing). Regarding the "few" people sitting in the wing zone, let's wait and see. The view from the end zone at the new stadium will be much better than from Fouts, obviously. Moving the family pack seats to the end zone will draw more folks there. Increases in attendance will draw more there also. With that section being right on top of the end zone, it's my hope that we have a lot of rowdy fans that like to sit there and make a lot of noise when opposing teams are trying to score at that end. I'm a MGC member and don't have a problem with getting rid of the deck. I go for the product on the field and look forward to the upcoming improvements in that product. They haven't announced the MGC benefits for the upcoming year, so maybe there will be other perks we didn't have before. I also think moving the scoreboard to the South was the right thing to do. Sick and tired of the "we were up in the first half" moral victories, the "if only we hadn't shanked a punt" or "if only our defense hadn't given up 300 yards rushing" justifications. We were down 2 scores in the 3rd quarter and never got closer than 8 points. But, lets play your game for a second. Riley went out of the game with 10 minutes left in the 4th. Kansas St. went way conservative on offense, knowing that we had no passing threat and they could completely key on the run. Whose to say that they don't come right back down the field and score after we cut it to 8 (like they had all day) if Riley is not hurt? See how fun playing "if and buts" can be? Don't get me wrong, I was very glad that it was a competitive game, but to say we "almost won" is just not true.4 points

He's only been here a month. That's 30 days. When is the last time any of you moved to a new city, found a house, bought that house, closed on the house, and moved 1500 miles to that house in 30 days? Oh yeah, he has been putting his staff together and staying on top of recruiting efforts as well. Give the guy a break. He will buy a house when he gets a chance.3 points

I know you were just jabbing, but you make a very valid point. How long have we asked for the AD to get there act together and act like a major college football program? Now that the new stadium is here, people are griping because the cheap value of UNT football is going away? Come on, folks, you can't have it both ways. I know many will be priced out of the club seats. If the ONLY reason you were in the MGC was the patio, then you will drop out of the MGC anyways. For others, use the Alumni pavillion as a replacement. Yes, it isn't in the stadium, but you should really be in your seats watc hing the game, anyway.3 points

Up by 13 in the first half. Outside of a bad punt providing good field position to KSU and allowing them to take the lead just prior to the half, we should have been up 20-14 or maybe even 20-7 at halftime. Not sure what game you watched, but the outcome could have gone either way, and if we would have realized they were running to the right 95% of the time and set up some indication of a defense to stop this we would have won.3 points

F yer, why so negative all of a sudden? None of this is recent news. You act like it is some clandestine plot to price out folks and take away benefits. In fact, the Mean Green Club is reviewing benefits and will definitely be adding some in the near future. Your post almost sounds like the kind of "class warfare" and "class envy" being touted by the democratic party day in and day out. Look, when my wife and I had three kids at home and we were starting out in our careers, I certainly couldn't afford Club Level seating. But, I wouldn't blast the university and administration for trying to upgrade facilities and sell seats and work on donation levels. It's not "class warfare". It's no problem if one cannot purchase Club Level seating or stadium seating between the 40's due to circumstances or simply because they don't want to do so, and I have not heard anyone jumping any one's case for opting to not purchase or participate in the Mean Green Club's efforts to increase membership. That effort is voluntary just like it is voluntary to purchase Club level seating or not. Yes, some folks get more benefits because they are in a position to donate more at this time of their life. Heck, I wish I could afford the Boxes at the new stadium. I can't and even if I could I doubt that I would purchase in that level. BUT, I do not begrudge those that can pay that price or choose (it is voluntary you know) to pay that price the extra benefits they will receive. The stadium hasn't even hosted it's first game and folks are starting to complain already about this or that. It is all voluntary. Let me say that again...it is all voluntary. You get to pick what you want to do and what you don't want to do. There will be alternatives to the deck...such as the Alumni Pavilion and great tailgating before and after the games. Sales are going well by the way. When one compares the support the program has been receiving the past few years with the demand for the Club Level and box seating one can surmise that sales are, indeed, going well. Will they be sold out before the stadium opens, I doubt it. Heck, if you counted all the current season ticket holders UNT has they probably wouldn't account for all the Club level and Box seating. Having sold 1/3 of the Club level seating and, as I am told, a majority of the box seating already isn't bad in my book for UNT given its record of past non-support. The glass is either half-full or it's half-empty. You get to choose which it is.....Smile, Flyer, it's not like you to be so gloomy! GO MEAN GREEN!2 points

Kram1, absolutely appreciate the kind words, not fishing for Fan of the year award by any means. Nobody owes me anything, I take my alma mater extremely seriously, and anybody that comes within earshot of me is going to get their fill of UNT. Agreed though, we can use all the fans we can get, fresh out of commencement, or more experienced, male, female, donkey, we need support. I just wanted people to realize that there's more "kids" like me out there, than there are alumni that can fork up 1200 a year for 2 seats in the Club Level, even without the one-time required donation. And I have family with season tickets at Auburn and Alabama, trust me, I understand what Big-Time college football costs, and understand the truly unique opportunity UNT FB allows. My dad has season tickets for the Cowboys, and he spends more on his parking yearly, than I do for my MGC donation, 2 seats, alumni membership, and a new UNT hat. Best bang for your buck deal on Football in the metroplex, same argument can be made for the education as well. So yeah, so long MGC deck, it was nice to have you as an option, but upwards and onwards, I'll trade your weathered wooden rails for 15 concession stands and too many latrines to count, any and every day of the week.2 points

He'll be on campus, in town, 250 days out of the year. He's not here to win over Denton, he's here to win football games. Our program needs to look beyond the small horizons of Denton. There's 2x as many people 7 miles south in Flower Mound/Lewisville, with 2x the the median income.2 points

In my humble opinion the new uniforms should incorporate kelly green, hunter green and lime green. These uniforms would celebrate all the colors worn by our football teams over the years.2 points

The scoreboard move is understandable if we want to fill the stadium. People won't want to sit in the wing or the lower bowl endzone seats if they have to keep turning around. I think the scoreboard will look great there and allow us to sell a lot of endzone seats.2 points

I'm sorry guys. I can't resist. I have to get in a good natured rib. So I'm amused that the biggest supporters of letting the free market determine the allocation of resources are suddenly miffed when they get priced out of their entitlements (the deck). OK. Really. Just a friendly jab on that. I did the math on those club seats, and I too fail to see the value in them. (Although I'm probably going to get pummeled for saying that, because I'm supposed to see it as a contribution to the educational opportunities of the underprivileged et al). Anyhoo, one has to wonder about the people in their seats during the game strategy. I question if more people will physically leave the stadium periodically to refill their, um, spirits rather than taking a short walk down to the deck. I've also got to say that I always had a soft spot for the view of several hundred people hanging out on the deck during a game. It looked really cool to me.2 points

Well, there will be a great place to meet and greet as Mean Green Club members before the game...it will the Alumni Pavilion being built. The Pavilion will have "beverages", big screen tv's etc. No, you would not be able to see the game from the Alumni Pavillion, but it will make for a great meeting place before the games, etc. All one has to do is be a member of the UNT Alumni Association and that will gain you entrance...and, i have been told guests will be allowed to accompany members, but in a limited number. You might want to consider joining the Alumni Association if you have not already done so. I was aware there would not be a "deck" at the new stadium from the very beginning and am surprised that everyone did not already know that. I am on board with RV wanting folks in their seats for the game and not hanging out in the deck. While my wife and I definitely enjoyed the deck and went there for every home game, I understand the reasons why there will not be such a spot in the new stadium. Folks, the new stadium will be a "change" from the experience at Fouts...a good one...but, it will definitely take some getting used to. Let's all try to give it a "run through" and a "trial run" before we start finding fault in its set-up and or operations. The Athletic Dept. will tweak things as time goes on...please PLEASE do not expect it to be PERFECT the first time you set foot in the place. Remember, even "Jerry World" took some tweaking after opening to get things to run even somewhat smoothly. It's a change for all of us...a good one indeed...but a change. Some folks need more time than others to adjust to change. Let's give it some time. And, be sure and join the UNT Alumni Assoc. (did you know that you do not have had to graduate from UNT to be a member of the Alumni Assoc.? It's true...call and ask if you don't believe me) or renew your membership so you and your guests will have access to the new Alumni Pavilion at the stadium. GO MEAN GREEN!2 points

I think our record next year depends on how well we recruit defensive tackles and cornerbacks between now and national signing day.2 points
-
Yes, they want to encourage people to solely access the Mean Green Club Level by purchasing Club Level Seating. This prices out a lot of folks who enjoyed meeting up with friends and family before the game. Plus, the video board will supposedly be blocking the view of the deck.........and the coaches offices, from the stadium. The video board location has been changed from the North Endzone to the South so that the few people sitting in the Wing section wont have to turn around to check the score or watch a replay. So to accomodate them, one of the best features I thought we had for recruiting folks into the Mean Green Club and to wow recruits and visitors as they visit the AC Center, won't be a feature at all. Interesting discussion. This is the exact same conversation we had when Dan came to Ames. What would be a reasonable amount of time to give him to get things turned around? I have seen several people comment on Mac's salary and the expectations that come along with it. His salary really shouldn't be a consideration in the discussion. Whether he is making 50k a year or 500k a year... he should be expected to win either way. He took the job after all. It's not like he'd try harder if he got paid more. The investment UNT has made in athletics, football specifically, will certainly help Mac do his job. He is a great recruiter, and having first rate facilities to sell is a big advantage. That said, you guys won't see the fruits of this brand new stadium in recruiting for a couple of years. The guys he'll sign this spring will either be commits to the previous staff he convinces to stay, or last minute guys available to fill certain positional needs. He'll need time to get the UNT brand out to high schoolers in FUTURE recruiting classes. THAT is where your facilities and commitment to football come in to play. He'll hold padded football camps for high school juniors and high school coaches. They'll come to campus and see the stadium, locker rooms, etc. That's RECRUITING... i don't know if your prior staff did this, but Mac made it a HUGE priority at I-State. He'd have upwards of 120 high school guys in Ames for camps... a recruiting infomercial... He's never seen ANY of your current players work out it person. It is unreasonable to expect him to be able to identify deficiencies without having full knowledge of the existing personnel. That's where schools like Iowa State and UNT make their money. Get on kids early, show them love, and build trust. This takes a bit of time, but the long term payoff is way better than throwing out a ton of offers to guys that aren't going to sign with you anyway. You may come in 2nd to Oklahoma for a 5 star recruit... what does that get you in the end? Mac LIVES off of identifying guys that are solid players and getting on them early. At I-State we would lose a few guys here and there that "blew up" their senior year and Nebraska would offer, but overall - the loyalty factor between the kid and Mac inked a lot of talented kids at I-State that could have played anywhere. In order to dominate the SBC you don't NEED to beat OU and Baylor for guys... yet anyway... I think some of you are a bit optimistic talking about winning the conference, bowl games, etc. in the next couple of years. There is a reason that you haven't won more than 3 games in a while. No matter how much you X and O as a coach - there's only so much you can do. By expecting a bowl game or a conference title in the next couple of years you are basically saying your previous coach took conference champion talent and won 3 games. Anyhoo... here's to a good off season and some kick ass spring football! GMG!2 points

Not sure what you expect of a staff that is still being assembled. Historically , NT commits the great majority of its recruits late in December and January. I am sure NT is not going to have a banner class due to the coaching change, but I can't imagine that it won't be a lot better than if the staff changes had not happened. Even with a couple of coaches carried over, it is going to take a lot of evaluation to specify and prioritize NT needs. Even though the old coaching staff tried to keep in contact with recruits, I doubt they really were effective. Just guessing, but NT was recruiting with a very bad hand prior to the McCarney hiring and a lot of those old recruits might not be acceptable to the new staff. All recruiting data is suspect and until a player is committed or signed, I would not fret too much on losing x player to x university. Despite what is posted on a bio, you have no way to know if an offer was actually made or if it was, if it is still available. College's personnel can not comment on individual recruiting and there is nothing to keep a player from exaggerating a little or a lot. A form letter or a casual text becomes a firm offer.2 points

If a restaurant who had loyal patrons suddenly upgraded from hamburgers to above-average filet mignon, overpriced it like it was caviar, and as a result reduced their sales by 2/3, that is certainly their right in the free market. But it seems that it is a foolish move. As I said in my post, if we were a big time school and we knew we were going to sell all those seats at X price, then by all means do it. What irks me is that the sales are obviously NOT going well, they are now recruiting volunteers to help sell seats, and oh, by the way, we're taking away a benefit you used to have because we want you to pay a lot more and stay in your seats. OK, I'll buy my seats and will adapt and this will all be forgotten, but for now I'm annoyed by it.1 point

I had also heard this months ago. I don't see it as a huge loss for recruiting, future events, etc... when I would expect the club level space to be utilized for these purposes. Just part of the price of getting a new stadium. Was the deck really that big of a draw? I was down there a couple of times, and all I wanted to do was head back to my seats due to the bad viewing angle and being surrounded by a crowd that wasn't really interested in watching the game.1 point

When I first learned of this I was extremely disappointed. I get the whole thing of incentivizing people into the club seats, that's fine, but I don't get ruining what was once billed as the "Touchdown Terrace" by obstructing it with the video scoreboard. Even if not used for the same purposes as the deck was used at Fouts, it at least was a valuable asset that could be used to host other groups, events, etc. that would have provided a great setting and view of the field. At some point, once the club level seats were sold out they might have been able to resurrect the "MG Club Deck" at this spot to further incentivize current and future MG Club members. Now, the AC which was designed to be the end-zone complex, and this valuable terrace will be obstructed by the scoreboard - when the scoreboard should have been over the wing zone as originally planned. Not sure what the actual, and maybe shortsighed reasoning behind that change was. Having said all of that, I'm just happy we have a great new stadium opening up and will greatly enjoy and appreciate it one way or the other. But like you, I was surprised when I learned of this as well.1 point

Appreciate your insight, but I think NT is probably much closer to being a championship team in the Belt than ISU was in the B12. Canales basically demonstrated that in his brief HC stint. NT was in every ball game except a bad performance against ULM, and could have easily won against the conference co-champ Troy and B12 Kansas State. NT will have the best returning back in the Belt and the State and some other talented players. No the team is nowhere close to being equal to even a mediocre AQ school, but it doesn't have to be in the Belt. The Belt won't be easy for NT because there are a lot of teams returning more than NT but I believe until proven wrong that NT has assembled a heck of a coaching staff. I am happy that NT got McCarney but I am also very happy with the coaching staff that McCarney has recruited. I do think that NT will win a few that they should not talent wise because of the coaching staff.1 point

Flomo just keeps making the same statement regardless of what anyone responds. (Maybe he's related to Plumm). UNT doesn't have a culture of losing. A culture of losing implies losing is acceptable. How many more examples do you need to school and fans demanding more from the team? -Coaching changes -Mid-season coaching changes -Improved salaries -Improved facilities -New Stadium -Strong attendance (for the conference)1 point

As a matter of fact it is indeed an overnight process to stop liking a team. I was a huge fan of Florida State all through junior high and high school. The minute I stepped on campus in Denton I chunked all of the FSU stuff I owned. Simple, quick, and easy. You will see the light one day and you will look back on this time in your life and wonder what you were thinking. I am glad you bleed green but your blood can be only one color. I also root for the school my wife went to but if they played each other you can bet I would be wearing green and only green no ifs ands or buts.1 point

I can't stand students with this attitude. I was a longhorn fan my entire life because I had several family members attend the university. In fact, I constantly used to wear Texas gear when I was in high school. However, the day I decided to go to UNT I threw all my UT shirts and hats in the garbage. It is okay to be fan of another university but your attitude disgusts me. The last thing this University needs it more students who wear UT shirts/hats to class. Thus, if you’re interested I will send you the UT admissions information if that’s really where you want to be........ I don't understand why any UNT student would wear UT gear. Don't they know they look like a Moron?1 point

This is from the San Diego paper. It's a quote from the San Diego AD. “The really interesting questions are going to be what we start thinking about in January,” Weber said. “The first question would be: would we like to add more programs? If so, the question is whether it’s one or two (programs in addition to Hawaii). Beyond that, a question is where those programs would be. Do we want to stay in Texas, or do we want to look elsewhere?” .... Weber said he doesn’t expect the questions to be resolved in January. If the board is “serious about looking at a couple of teams, we’d probably do that through the rest of spring and make a decision in June,” he said. ..... “Let’s be clear: the market in Utah is pretty small; that’s not a big marketplace,” http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/dec/10/mountain-west-still-may-grow-beyond-hawaii/ I think people are wrong to assume UTEP and Utah St are 100% getting invites. It was mentioned in article by guy who writes for St. Lake City paper, but he never said they were 100% getting invites. He just said they are two potential expansion candidates. The MWC needs to decide if they want to stay in Texas or just stay in Mountain Time Zone. I don't think they know right now.1 point
