  1. See info below regarding Austin... He would be an excellent guy to get. As you can see, he ONLY coached High School for 1 year. All of his other coaching experience is at the college level. Austin took the UNI running game to a higher level in 2008 as Corey Lewis set the Panthers' all-time rushing mark with 4,003 yards. Austin will be entering his fifth season as the Panthers' running back coach in 2009 and will also take on the duties of Special Teams Coordinator. Not only was Lewis rewriting the UNI record book, Derrick Law was also contributing as he nearly eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark as Lewis' backup. The Panthers' 32 rushing touchdowns in 2008 tied for the second-most in school history. The Panthers' running attack reached new levels in 2007 as the squad rushed for a school record 2,956 yards and 39 touchdowns. Leading the way was Lewis as he rushed for a school record 1,513 yards, including 220 in UNI's 38-35 win over New Hampshire in the NCAA FCS playoffs. Lewis averaged 116.38 yards per game to rank No. 2 in the conference and No. 19 in the nation. Austin was instrumental in helping running back Darian Williams attain Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Year honors in 2006. Williams ranked eighth in the league in rushing yards per game (59.4) and ranked second on the team with 653 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. The Panthers' other feature back in '06 was Lewis, who rushed for a team-high 894 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Lewis ranked No. 27 in the nation and No. 5 in the MVFC in rushing yards/game (99.3). In 2005, Austin helped running back David Horne set the UNI single-season rushing touchdown record with 17. Horne rushed for 1,141 yards to lead the Panthers into the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA FCS national title game. Along with Horne's accomplishments, the Panthers were able to mix in fellow senior Terrance Freeney into the UNI running game. Freeney rushed 172 times for 656 yards and nine touchdowns in 2005. Prior to the 2007 season Austin was selected to attend the 2007 NCAA Football Coaching Academy in Indianapolis, Ind. The academy, targeted for minority coaches, is a preparatory class for becoming a head coach with participants selected by a committee from the NCAA. Austin served as a graduate assistant at Southwest Minnesota State University (2003-2004), the first working with the secondary and the last aiding with the inside linebackers. Additional duties included helping with athlete strength and conditioning during the season, video coordination, breaking down of game film, and recruiting. A native of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Austin was a four-year starter as a defensive back at Iowa State University from 1998-2002. He received honorable mention All-Big 12 honors by The Associated Press in 2001 and was presented the 2002 Reuben J. Miller Award, given to the player whose conduct on and off the field has brought honor to ISU. He redshirted in 1998, then compiled 173 career tackles, including 146 solos and 27 assisted stops. He also was credited with 33 pass deflections and two interceptions. As a senior, he was voted the team's defensive MVP against Florida State when he tallied five tackles, including four solos. He started 10 games in 2001, finishing the year ninth on the squad with 55 total stops and leading the team with 10 breakups. He started the last nine games in 1999 and was moved from running back to cornerback when he earned a spot in the two-deep heading into fall practice.

  2. And college football is still dirty. From Reggie Bush to Cam Newton to who knows who else... the fact is that part of the reason the powerhouses remain powerhouses is because of boosters paying players. I love college football, but there is a lot wrong with the game. There needs to be some serious reform: Make booster payments to athletes a state crimeBan all agents who pay college players from representing NFL playersForce college players to repay scholarships if they enter any pro draft and forego graduation (they took an enrollment spot from a kid who wanted to be an engineer or doctor)Finish investigations faster. It's ridiculous the Reggie Bush investigation took so longSuspend college coaches who knowingly violate NCAA rules for 5 years

  3. This was a joke of a documentary. The "justifications" laid out on SMU's behalf are beyond ludicrous. First they start with a "everyone in Dallas wanted a winner because the Cowboys were good...therefore they were under a lot of pressure" backdrop. Hell, they even mention the freakin' Kennedy assasination as a reason Dallas needed some positive pub!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then, they go on to lay out the "everyone in college football cheats, SMU was just trying to be the best they could be" crap. Then, they argue that UT, aTm, and even Pitt brought this upon SMU because they were jealous. Nobody would ever argue that I'm a UT apologist but this is utter and total crap. Then, if that weren't enough, they blame a DEAD guy who blew the whistle and present him as a drug addict with sour grapes syndrome. Yes, a dead guy. Every SMU person interviewed, including that weasel Craig James, tries to trot out that same old entitled and "who me" routine for the entire program. And the attitude hasn't changed ONE BIT on the hilltop. Pathetic. Truly pathetic.

  4. Just because everyone was doing it does not mean that SMU deserved any less then they got. They had their chance to stop after they got caught, but kept doing it anyway. The death penalty rule was even fresh in their mind when they decided to keep the payroll going. SMU went down because of SMU, the media wars just got the momemtum going.

  5. No disrespect to this candidate but I would rather have Shelton Gandy. He has proven he can coach running backs to a high level.

  6. No kidding! I haven't met one either that doesn't say they miss him. I must have talked to 10 alumns, one in our family during Thanksgiving, and before during the past several weeks who feel the same way. One on my department even said he was excited at the thought(at the time) of the possibility of him coming here. Then stated..."Can you imagine what he could do if he coached at a big public school like UNT in the DFW area?". Rick

  7. Several of the emails were posted, Adam James was released form medical care. It means he would drive, sit on his bed by himself, Sit in a closet if he wanted. Walk around campus whatever. But some how a bratty little kid that he was is sent to an air conditioned room to sit is some kind of torture. Adam James being mistreated is silly and breaks the rules of common sense.

  8. No it just proves they were looking for something as silly as Adam James to fire Leach and not pay him as the those emails clearly state.

  9. Yeah all the affluent loser Tech fans I know will be happy you think so much of yourself. You do realize that Leach was fired not even a year ago.

  12. Merry Christmas 2010 to the GMG Board – the Angel of Mean Green Christmas is here! I’ve been a member of this board since June of 2004. In that time I have never set a profile picture. Why? I don’t know. I just never got around to it. However, that all changed last week. It Friday, December 10th 2010, when I noticed that a girl’s picture was appearing in my posts. She was originally called Cutie Girl. I had no idea who she was or where she came from. I attempted to change my profile picture to something else but it would not change. I finally contacted board admin Harry who was able to remove her. Now I realize that wasn’t the best decision. Although her origin is mysterious she was well received by board members. Others posted hoping she would appear for them but to no avail. Cutie Girl only appeared for me. It was suggest by one poster that she was a stalker. If true then I can only hope to be stalked by someone like her. I now believe she was a gift from heaven to this board and I am simply the conduit for her. She is the Angel of Mean Green Christmas. They say good things happen in three and I think this proves it: McCarney hired, Canales retained, and the Angel of Mean Green Christmas appeared. Fortunately I saved the picture and she has now returned to my profile. How long she remains is a question I cannot answer. I suppose she could choose to leave us at any time. Until that time she shall remain with us. This is my present to the GMG board.

  13. Football Scoop is reporting that Coach Mc talked to Atif Austin about being our RB coach. He has coached in college, played for McCarney at Iowa State....and is currently (I believe) the head football coach at Tarpon Springs, Fla. 15. The SMU people had some rotten attitudes. I mean, it's gross to see. It's either feigning ignorance, claiming that everyone did it so it was okay, bragging that SMU did the cheating better and that being worth bragging about, or whining about how bad the penalty was, or worse, acting like they had something to be proud about with the current state of the SMU program - as if they were somehow to be credited with that. Talk about something that stinks from the inside out - going up as high as the governor's office. Then you have all of these people who were major players in all of this trying to shove the blame on someone else. Honor among thieves doesn't even cover how badly these folks treated each other. Taking the boosters and throwing them under the bus, then having the nerve to continue to do the same thing that SMU had been busted for previously. Then we're looking at a situation where someone commits a rather serious offense, and then isn't smart enough to cover it up by mailing things in university stationery. What's worse is how everyone acts surprised. Also, Craig James has zero credibility.

  16. The author was in the episode and he explained where the quote came from. I thought it was a bit uneven. Some parts were great, but the justification and absolution of the players was ridiculous. I would have enjoyed more on what folks got and maybe a little less of making ESPN employee Craig James look blameless for the whole thing. Still, overall, it was a pretty good watch, despite having more exposition than Atlas Shrugged and that one scene in Spaceballs combined.

  19. SHSU is not 20 points better than us. sparkmank and i drove down there, and it was a great game. they raised their southland champions banner! that means they took great stock in this game against us. not to mention at the end of the game, a section of students chanted "over rated". that says alot about our team. you can't do much when a team hits a hot streak and seems to make everything they throw up. no defense can defend against luck, and that's exactly what SHSU had that night. and a lot of it. we played catch up the whole game, and that really affected our gameplan. one thing that we seem to do EVERY GAME is get the other team in foul trouble. with about 12 minutes left in the first half, we were already in our bonus. we missed too many free throws tonight and that affected us. we only shot about seven 3's and made 2. EVERYONE knows that isn't the usual for us. i'm not ready to put on the pampers yet and pee myself. let's see what UNT has the rest of NC, and then i'll tell you whether to invest in some depends or not.

  21. When Art Briles, who had never coached at the college level before, left Stephenville HS he took a position coach job, I believe RB's, at Texas Tech for one season before going to U of H as Head Coach. Austin is more qualified.

  23. On occasion, the baby gets thrown out with the bath water. McCarney was hired to right the ship. It's only natural that he wants a crew that he is comfortable with and has confidence in. His call and I'm OK with any selection he makes.

  25. Get over myself? You don't know me to tell me to get over anything, least of all myself. Sounds to me as a newbie you need to get off your little hoppy horse just a tad? But to respond to the others who do mind that UNT may have been used as a pawn in all this, I would say that that is not a good feeling for our school to have to encounter; that is, being used for possible barter bait? Hell, the guy is not the 2'nd Coming of Knute Rockne just yet, now is he? And FWIW.........I think I said I smelled a fish, not neccessarily did I say I saw a fish? Yet............If you've already signed a UNT coaches contract, then you stick with your decision and tell the rest of the NCAA they will just have to wait a while for your services. There are no prima donnas that inhabit any athletic dept. IMHO and certainly not the one I've seen in Denton of late---like the last almost 4 decades now? I am sure most of the NCAA D1 employees are not going to join our nations almost 10% unemployment ranks any time soon. Their network is far too strong for even the average, mediocre staff types to stay unemployed for too long. OK, all ye of such sensitive feelings that you cannot seem to handle opinions different from your own, lets see your red numbers on this post right now to prove that very point. GMG!

  27. The MWC doesn't have presence in DFW, TCU does. I think the MWC knows that ship has sailed. Let's be honest UNT doesn't bring the DFW market with them if they go to the MWC. Also why are we talking about going to the MWC, they haven't shown any interest in us. The MWC is looking at Plan A: Stay at 10, Plan B: Go got 12 with USU and UTEP.

  28. One could make a very strong case that this year, Sun Belt football was even worse than it was in the much maligned 2001 season. If the Sun Belt is improving on the football field, I'm not seeing it. The only real change is that we're playing more conference games and that's helping get more teams bowl eligible. Barely.

  50. Had a chance to catch UNT signee Ben Knox tonight in Arlington. (Against Ft Worth Christian) First of all, their games are not at Arlington Prep Academy but at Workman Middle School; about 5 miles away. Anyway, I was able to make it over there in time for player introductions. Ben is legitimately 6-10 with a slim frame. I was initially impressed when I saw him walking and chewing gum at the same time. Ben had a nice 1st quarter with 8 points and 3 rebounds. His coach took him out with 1:20 remaining in the first and didn’t return until the 2nd half. Ben only had 1 foul. Ft Worth Christian’s tallest man appeared to be about 6-2, maybe 6-3. Ben finished the night (unofficially) with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 9 blocks and 1 steal. Now before anyone get too excited about the 9 blocks, I felt that the much smaller FW players didn’t respect Ben enough by continueing to drive right into his outstretched arms. Ben was later benched with 3:00 remaining in the 3rd after fumbling away an ally up pass from PG Nick Russell out of bounds. He did return in the 4th to pad his numbers. In Summary As we expected, Ben is a project! He has some skills but is too weak to compete at the D1 level; anytime soon. Often times tonight he couldn’t establish himself down low because the smaller Ft Worth players would push him out from under the basket. He will easily be our 13th man at the end of the bench. (Despite the huge hole we will have in the middle next year. I didn’t see enough skills for him to be anything but a 5. It would be in everyone’s best interest for him to red-shirt if at all possible. Whether or not Ben is able to contribute will depend on his ability to work extremely hard, gain weight (30 pounds) and strength. Otherwise, this will be a wasted scholarship. Guys, I wish I could sugar coat my opinion but I can’t. Honestly, I don’t think the kid would start for half of the high schools I have seen so far this year. (Albeit 5A & 4A publics). I saw Justin Howerton twice in HS. I didn’t feel that he would contribute until at least his junior year. Howerton was more developed. JJ must be targeting Nick Russell. (Who should be playing at Duncanville instead of against the Ft Worth Christians of the world) Hopefully I will be wrong. Besides, Michael Jordan was once cut from his HS team.
