  1. Granted, my history as a UNT fan is rather brief in the grand scheme of things, but from 99-present, have we ever had more to be excited about as UNT football fans? I was caught up in the Todd Dodge hysteria, and truly believed he was set to change the face of the program. Even convinced some fellow alumns to eagle up for some season tickets and MGC club donations. But as excited as I was, it was more hope and blind faith than it was true belief and assurance. Coach Mc represents the most decorated coach we've had since possibly Hayden Fry? They guy's coached on the biggest stages of college FB in the Big XII (X) and the SEC. Our new stadium is no longer a dream, but a tribute rising from the 17th and 18th fairways of my childhood? How impressive did it look from across the street at the Fouts Finale, definately had every K State fan I spoke with interested and admiring. I have alums of A&M and Tech telling me how impressed they were with our coaching decision, which caught me off guard. But did anybody notice the quotes from Bob Stoops, Hayden Fry, Urban Meyer, Bill Snyder and Barry Alvarez in the president's email on the coaching hire? They were effusive in there praise of Coach Mc. Forgive me if the green colored Kool-Aid flows a little freely, it's been a long season and I am steadfast an eternal optimist, but have we ever had more to be excited about as fans after such a dysmal performance? Is anyone else feeling like we truly have reasons, not just hope and alumnist faith, to expect more from this program and this team? To expect to compete in our non-conference games and actually win 2-3 of them? To actually dominate our sunbelt competition and return to the days where the SunBelt title had to pass thru Denton? For the first time ever, it feels like UNT has finally committed the time, money and emotion into building a program, the right way, from the ground up. And while it's taken nearly a decade and 3 head coaches, it finally feels like we're on the verge of doing something special and re-defining UNT football in it's entirety. Damon

  2. I'll try and answer, I mean, what the heck? I've heard Jarion Henry came to Tech and left, perhaps Mean Greener than Shrek. Ben Dillard is still high on our board, though if he's shown at the Pit, I've heard no word. As for Terrel de Rouen I've no idea what he's doin' Marquis Jackson, from my alma mater he may well come here, and not be a hater though in truth he has lots on his platter as he may end up with McCarney, would that make him a traitor? A. Norris, Goodson and Mergeson all remain unsigned if they end up in Denton, I certainly wouldn't mind and they're bound to have us on the radar, unless of course they're blind.

  3. Just a guess, but this will mainly be Coach Canales' decision. Under Coach Canales' total control the mean green scored on the average 33.8 points a game. Just guessing again, but I think that Coach McCarney will mainly be focusing on improving the defense in the off season. IMHO the offense doesn't need his attention.

  5. Hoped for funny, with a response by the Greek all I got was this? My, my how weak Luckily for you, I'm not given to pique and this board has an edit feature, allows you to tweak. I know that a "+1" has become rather chic but with the wit seen above, I'd remain meek like UNTFlyer, in the home of a Sheikh.

  7. How can you say that KindDL1's post is "not true at all", when he was just passing along what was said to him by Texas Tech fans, and says as much. You, on the other hand, claim to present "facts", but provide no source. So, we're supposed to simply believe you on your word? Does anyone here know you enough to vouch for you?

  8. Courtland buddy, I was at a very emotional and draining funeral viewing tonight and of course didn't even think to check in on the game afterwards. And just wanted you to know, that at times it may seem to you that while your typing away here by yourself that no one is appreciative of your updates. But after getting home and collecting myself again and getting the kids in bed and getting a bite to eat I can come here and get caught up with your posts. I really appreciate your efforts. Rick

  10. What's very encouraging and wonderful for the UNT program is that phrases like building competitive facilities, hiring the right people, allocating a competitive budget are no longer empty words, but have been delivered, and are now reality.

  12. Ben Knox scored 4! I know it is not much, but during the last couple minutes of the game, he actually looked somewhat confident, even with his back to the basket. He had a couple good blocks as well. We don't need him to be a star, but if he can just get to the point where he can give a few quality minutes, that would be huge. I have not given up yet.

  15. Matt McGettigan was a good S&C coach for I-State. He'd be a nice hire for Dan if he could get him again. The guy makes football players. He'd say conditioning is one thing each individual can control (regardless of natural talent). Something like, "a fresh athlete beats a winded "great" athlete every time..." "Be in better football shape not a bodybuilder"... Just some I-State input about him.

  20. You sure know a lot of stuff about a lot of schools and put a lot of work into your posts. Can we expect similar breakdowns from you as more coaches get fired? That way, your presence would at least have a point beyond the auto-erotic pleasure you seem to get from typing condescending diatribes. We have a spot for you and want this to work out for all of us.

  21. I have been living in and going to Mountain West bball games for 15 years now in New Mexico and Las Vegas. The MWC is terribly underrated as a bball league, but TCU could barely stay on the floor with those programs in the Pit, The Marriott Center, Thomas and Mack...They will field a bball team because they have to but they will not be a bball factor. They will be the best fball program in the BE and that is great for them. In following UNT for 24 years do you think I ever thought I would see UNT playing at the top level of football, traveling with the MG Nation to four consecutive bowl games, building of a brand spanking new football palace...UNT has come a long way since I joined the Nation in the fall of '86 when we were 17,000 students strong. Today we hired a former Big 12 coach, drove a Big 12 bowl team mad last week, have a new home to tailgate in and win in, and in 10 short months will open our new palace to the football world. I have also worn conference champion and big dance t-shirts to the last 3 bball games and look forward to the Mean Green competing for our conference title again this year. How sweet was it to have the 3 programs I follow closely - Mean Green, Lobos, and Rebels make the Big Dance last year! My point is that UNT has much to offer and should be fueled by TCU and SMU's success. The frogs and ponies in their displeasure with UNT's bball success should be driven to improve their lots. If we continue to excel and make the Dance again we will get a ton of attention in the area just as TCU will when it hits the Rose Bowl. This Mean Green fan is NOT defined by the success of the purple red blue and white. Mean Green have a lot of valuable seeds planted in rich soil. We will be just fine as well. Go Mean Green! Beat Texas Southern! 7-1 here we come! GMG

  24. A couple of observations about tonight's very ho hum game. Was disappointing that NT had to put out almost max effort against this team, all 5 starters had over 30 minutes. I was encouraged with Edwards who had an awful line, 9 minutes 2 points, 2 rebounds and five fouls. Despite an awful performance, he seems to move much better. Thompson was again spectacular but NT was out rebounded and seemed to generally sleep walk through this game. The rest of the six were ok but not particularly noteworthy. Holmen had only 6 minutes and only 2 missed shoots to show up in the statistics. Ben didn't look bad for Ben with four points against the scrubs. Never felt even though it got within 4 points that NT would lose, but it was another case of playing at the competition level. Texas Southern and Sam Houston on the road are not going to be easy games for this team.

  28. I was talking to some friends and it began to dawn on me how TCU moving to the Big East will affect UNT and SMU. I think TCU has been the flagship school in the DFW area for a few years now since the national attention they have been getting by being in the top 25 and that alone has lured many recruits to play for them. Now that they are going to be in a BCS conference and will playing the likes of WVU, Pitt, and UConn at home, will this put UNT and SMU even further in the back seat? Will the casual sports fans in Dallas now root for TCU over any other school in the area? Even worse, will the UNT alumni start to direct their attention and resources to TCU? I am worried about the impact this will have in terms of enrollment, recruiting, and the future of UNT athletics. Please tell me that I am worrying for nothing.

  30. If Leach and Leavitt did not care about their reputations, and only cared about making money by the employment they would gain by settling, they would have settled already. Obviously they care more about their reputations and have decided to fight for them job or no job. Dude! Seriously!

  31. I can't believe anyone after going through this year would think that NT doesn't need more QB's. Assuming Dodge plays QB next year and Thompson comes back well, that gives NT two scholarship quarterbacks. Baine showed a lot of guts and proved to be adequate but he is not someone that is going to compete for a starting position. If Tune recovers and got a medical redshirt that would be great, but that has not happened. NT will get one and probably two QB recruits this year.

  33. I don't know what else you want from these people. If you ask to get validated, people are going to give you negative rep. We discussed 2 nights ago that I share your concern, but there isn't any other option. Our starters build a lead, you sit them and then your boy Holmen goes in. This article doesn't validate your argument that Holmen needs to start. It validates your concern that you, like everyone else who has watched college basketball before you knows that our starters have been putting in work. Also, take a look at the schedule coming up. The road gets a little less bumpy up until conference time. The world is not ending, and you're not making a terribly ground breaking point.

  34. Riley/Canales did a great job leading this team at the end the season. I've heard many on here suggest Riley should be our QB next season. I understand his mobility really helps open things up for Dunbar and co but his inabilitiy to throw the ball down the field really limits this thing. I thought we looked much better with a QB who forced the safeties back.

  37. I think we'd all agree that if any JUCO signee cannot enroll this Spring and participate in Spring Football then we have wasted a 'ship that we can ill afford to waste at this point in time. UNT QB's Riley Dodge: How much more can this storm trooper endure? He may be our starter but we must have a "co-starter" ready to go, too. Derek Thompson: How bad was his injury? He's still virtually untested outside the practice fields. A HS QB Who Graduates This May? Get us a stud, Coach Mac and Chico, and one who can run like the wind and throw equally well. If there is a clone of the Boise State QB that would be a good start. GMG! PS: Anyone else already sense our recruiting is moving up to the next level, too? GMG!!

  39. SMU and Tulsa are in the same range of football attendance even with us being abysmal until the last half of this year, and Houston and SMU have about the same or worse basketball attendance, all of this versus CUSA schools. You act like there's no value to adding us due to a few down years in football. We're doubling down on football (literally), creating separation in basketball, and pumping $7+ million more a year, minimum, into athletics overall. Attendance will come, but not against Sun Belt schools.

  45. Leach had an incredibale win record. That said if DanMac does as well as I think he will he is a better fit then old Leach for us. I do believe that DanMac if successful may retire here. I was a full blown Leach Fan but I think in the long run we have a better coach in DanMac.

  46. I think you've unlocked a mystery here. You've listed out valid concerns and did it in an intelligent fashion. No matter how we bluster on the board, we are all worried about these issues -- some just seem to look for them and wave them in everyone's face at every opportunity. I appreciate a non-popular stance as much as the next guy, but the folks who are yelling "why did I get a -1?" usually aren't doing it the way you just did.

  47. But why can't they just sell us our season tickets now? I just don't understand why purchasing tickets for every event has to be so confusing and difficult. Why do I need to come to gmg.com for clarification? Because our ticket office doesn't even know how to explain what they're doing. Building a program is more than coaching/winning games/etc. Lets improve in all areas.

  48. I have placed my deposit for two seats. I look forward to being a part of the Club Level Seating and the Club Lounge! In the words of KRAM1, "Good Things are Happening for the Mean Green!" The athletic department has made a statement with the hiring of Coach Mac and retaining Chico. More fans need to respond to that statement with their further support by joining the Mean Green Club and making a donation to the New Stadium Fund!

  49. I still defer to the Boise model. Hey, we were once conference mates with BSU, so do they deserve better than us at North Texas (and FWIW, I still think their blue football field sucks)! Hell no, they don't deserve better, but when the Broncos made their "true" national debut versus OU in the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago in arguably the most exciting bowl game I'd seen, what you could see from Boise was their top to bottom team speed--it still defines their team this year and its what helped them beat the Sooners in that most exciting bowl game.
