  1. It's the damnedest thing... Apparently, there are all sorts of way to win, depending on your team's strengths and available assets. If only we had someone with the wisdom to figure out the best way for us to succeed with this year's lineup...

  4. But why can't they just sell us our season tickets now? I just don't understand why purchasing tickets for every event has to be so confusing and difficult. Why do I need to come to gmg.com for clarification? Because our ticket office doesn't even know how to explain what they're doing. Building a program is more than coaching/winning games/etc. Lets improve in all areas.

  6. I know for a fact, through my association with former NT personnel, that the success of NT athletics impacts initial interest in the school by high schoolers. The positive publicity works well for initial inquiries by the high schoolers into what NT has to offer. It's great publicity to have winning programs--especially football in Texas. What hurts us is that when the high school kids get here they have no knowledge of most of the teams we play. It will be most beneficial for us to play schools that are more well known in this part of the country--and beat them.

  7. If it's any consolation, our 11-year-old asked if he could skip his school obligation to go to the UNT game. I told him, we'll make it; just a little late.

  8. A lot of bull, the facts are that NT is not trying or has to compete with the AQ conference members, and should be very comparable with the majority of the non-AQ's around. Not that NT doesn't suffer from a lot of problems you listed, but so do most of the other members of the MAC, Belt, MWC and CUSA, In fact, just about every university can cry lack of resources other than UT and Ohio State. There is always someone with something better. Look at the regional non-AQ competition. SMU, Tulsa, Tulane, and Rice all have money although not as much as you might think for athletes but have relatively small followings despite being in a better regional conferences. UTEP has the following and maybe the resources but they have also been at the bottom of the football pile throughout most of their history. Houston has some major donors and also the advantage most of these teams have of playing in the old SWC but their overall support has never been particularly good. La Tech just should not be able to compete with NT based on resources and geography. TSSM and UTSA are start ups that are going to prove a lot before they are real competition. Yes the sleeping giant phrase has been overused and particularly at NT and NT does need more and better support. But you are blind if you don't see the progress that has been made at NT and hopefully will escalate from now on. New experienced coaching staff, new football stadium, and additional revenues from the student fees and stadium coming on stream. Plus the most important and rarest component NT, a pro athletic administration. These are tangible ingredients not pipe-dreams. There are a lot of politics involved in conference selections, so they are rarely just based on what an university can offer. But even in the back room policies involved with Rawlins, NT might just fare fairly well there too.

  9. Oh, and just a general primer for those who may not be too familiar with college baseball: Baseball typically runs four games a week. There are three-game weekend series, which like football, typically start OOC or in tournaments early in the season, and against conference teams later in the season. The fourth game is a mid-week game, usually on Tuesday, that is ALWAYS considered OOC even if the teams are in the same conference. Really good teams have three legit starts with #1 going on Friday night through #3 on Sunday. Mediocre teams start running into depth problems on Sunday. If you look at box scores, this is why you'll see Friday games coming in at 6-5 with Sunday games at 22-15. There really isn't such a thing as a Tuesday starter. You'll typically see a lot of experimentation going on with feeling out new pitchers for future potential and putting in younger position players. These games do count come selection Sunday and they do count for RPI, but for teams who know they're going to the post season (pretty much winning teams from the big six), these games are opportunity for younger players to get much needed experience should their services be required in the post season. Some conferences have a tournament and some don't. The Sun Belt does with the winner receiving the auto-bid to the post season. Unlike basketball, though, the Sun Belt got three bids to the tournament last year, so a random throw of the dice is not nearly as likely to destroy the body of work over a great regular season. College ball uses metal bats. Many were accusing certain SEC and Big XII schools of "rolling" composite bats to make them perform better. If you were to watch SEC games over the past several years, it looked more like a session at the driving range than a baseball game. Safety concerns have led to new bat standards beginning this year. While the bats are still metal, they are designed to perform like wood. Reports from fall practice are that home runs are waaaay down. We speculate a new era of small ball in college baseball with an eventual move to wood bats once and for all (although bat manufacturer endorsement checks going directly into coaches' pockets slow this considerably). That's all I can think of right now for the basics. Any questions? Edit: The regular season has a uniform start date in the middle of February now (southern schools used to start in January). The regular season is 56 games long with two exceptions. If you play an inter-team scrimmage in the fall, it counts against your game limit. On the other hand, if you make a road trip to play Hawaii, you can play up to four games that don't count against the limit, thereby raising your regular season game limit to 60 games. The post season is 64 teams divided into 16 regionals of four teams each. The four teams play a double elimination format tournament until one team is left standing. Then, the regional winners are paired up in super-regionals (the sweet 16). They play a best 2 out of 3 series with the winner advancing to the world series in Omaha. Omaha is split into two 4-team brackets that play a double elimination format. The winner of each bracket meet in the championship for a best 2 of 3 series to declare the champion. Up until Omaha, all post season games are hosted on campus. The #1 seeds in the regionals typically host. Among those there are 8 national seeds. They typically host the super-regionals, assuming they make it through their regional.

  10. whats up guys... Kinda new here put down my deposit for my first round of season tickets... '08 grad and looking forward to another season of Mean Green Football! the only sucky part is that I now have to wait 9 months for the games

  11. I have placed my deposit for two seats. I look forward to being a part of the Club Level Seating and the Club Lounge! In the words of KRAM1, "Good Things are Happening for the Mean Green!" The athletic department has made a statement with the hiring of Coach Mac and retaining Chico. More fans need to respond to that statement with their further support by joining the Mean Green Club and making a donation to the New Stadium Fund!

  12. i would love to see us in mwc or cusa. however, i see a few problems when i remove my rose tinted glasses. we have a small fan base at present, no tv following, don't travel, poor financial support from alumni, and a underfunded athletic program. i realistically believe that winning solves some of these issues, and feel that with our new coach and stadium we have a chance to move forward. hovever, we have never seemed to address the following question; what do we want,[lexus], what do we need[transportation], and what are we willing to pay for[used pick -up truck]? until we open our wallets as much as our mouths we will continue to be a sleeping giant. just an observation.

  13. Nope...to get a better idea of season ticket renewals and numbers of new season ticket holders, to hopefully gain new Mean green Club members and to allow current season ticket holders (and others for that matter) to up their number of Mean Green Priority Points (is that what they call them?) to improve their seat selection priority. I see no "sinister plot" here by the Athletic Dept. to somehow gauge their ability to raise season ticket prices a great deal. We have been told all along that ticket prices will be higher in the new stadium, but they are not looking to jack prices up significantly. It would do the Mean Green and our new HC a great good if people would, in fact place deposits now for next year's seats. Our new HC has been charged with bringing new season ticket holders to the table, retaining current season ticket holders and helping to sell Club Level and Suite packages. It's always nice to know what base you have to work with before heading out to sell a program if you are a new HC or member of the new HC's staff. Seems a very smart move on the part of the staff with this offer. Besides, if you are going to buy tickets for next season, why not up your points total a bit by placing a deposit on your seats now?

  14. Yes there are and I trust in the Johns (to borrow a Vitoism), but we could also win like George Mason did during their Final Four run. I seem to recall they used most of their timeouts in conjunction with the media timeouts to play their starters most of the game and still keep them somewhat fresh. Though I do love having these types of discussions with a 5-1 record!

  15. I am not sure criticism of the team is the same as not appreciating the job JJ has done and the great players this team has. Sure NT is 5-1 at this point and that is the best anyone could have asked. The issue with me is I envisioned this team as capable of being the very best at NT of all time. With the big three and Johnson and Hogans back, this could be that special team. Unfortunately, NT had a horrible year recruiting and I don't think anyone can challenge that. The season ending injury to Williams has further exposed a team with no apparent depth. I see a lot of references to team winning big with small rotations and starters playing big minutes. A lot of coaches believe in that philosophy and it works well for them. Your stars may be more tired but they are still better than their backups. The difference at NT is that it is not the preferable style, it is out of necessity and it is not a 7 or 8 man rotation, it is six. The odds of NT going through the rest of the season without injuries that require one of those six to be out a game or two are small. As most of you know it is not only that you may lose a player to foul problems but the fact that the players know the situation and the defense becomes timid because of fear of fouling out and having to play with an out of position or weaker player. Your ability to press and play up-tempo is also tempered. I can see with this current class that JJ may not have wanted to give a scholarship to a weaker player and forgo someone much better next year, but I do think he has severely jeopardized this season with that decision. Water under the bridge at this point, but I think we are all gotten be really disappointed with the season unless someone develops. Edwards is a mystery. I don't know if he is injured or extremely immobile. Knox looks like he has regressed instead of demonstrating all this potential that keeps being touted. I don't know what is up with Holmen, he has played ten total minutes in the last two games. He is obviously in the doghouse. I think or at least hope that one of the three begins to contribute a lot more. The guards are all good and as long as they all remain healthy and can play 30 minutes or more a game, NT will be stretched at guard but should be alright. JJ and this team has always came through, and I think they will this year. However, I don't see a top 50 team that could have been.

  16. Here's something from the local newspaper in that part of Indiana that, I think, gives some insight into the guy: Justin Frye: "Coaching Show" in his future? I kinda wonder if Coach Mac isn't looking for guys who have an emotional and spiritual commitment to the game of football that comes close to matching his. Anyway, just think of this: someone has to give a young guy a chance, just like our most recent OL coach was given that chance (and responded well, I think).

  20. The overall budget will not support eight Dan McCarneys. Coaching staffs are always a mix of young guys and old heads to stay within the defined salary structure. As an old Hoosier, the Frye kid looks pretty good to me and obviously to Coach Mac through personal experience with Frye's abilities. I have to admit that I'll have to look at a map to figure out where Elwood, IN is located.

  21. As long as we win the game, I don't care. If we beat a bad team by 1, then go out a couple nights later and beat a good team by 1, it is all the same to me. In my opinion, the best thing to take from these 4 games against D1 teams is that this team knows how to win. They have gotten themselves into some difficult scenarios this year, but so far have always found a way to win.

  22. And if you look closely at the trailer picture of the two SMUt players, notice large stadium crowd in the background. The white "away" uniforms tell me this was not a home crowd for SMUt. Most of the big crowds were at UT, A & M, probably Tech.

  23. I would be willing to bet even K State fans can find something to find fault with. For me, as has been the case I don't understand why we save our timeouts? Sure it works with lesser teams, but I have my eye on a first round tourney win so I and many others will question our Basketball Jones regardless of what we do against the likes of teams like UTA. 25. Junior has probably felt that if UNT Football didn't take itself seriously (and hiring two HS coaches probably didn't help our case) then why should he ? We're starting to look like we take it seriously with Coach Mac and the Win Mill, and it sounds like he's coming around. Hopefully the thousands of other alums who think like him start to come around, too.

  26. CUSA currently has 12 teams and the MWC will have nine when the dust settles. It could affect us positively if both go to 12 teams. It could break out like this: MOUNTAIN WEST Hawaii Fresno State San Diego State Nevada UNLV Boise State Wyoming Colorado State Air Force New Mexico UTEP North Texas CUSA SMU Houston Rice Tulsa Louisiana Tech Memphis Tulane Southern Miss UAB UCF East Carolina Marshall If UCF gets picked up by the Big East they could be replaced by Temple or a SBC team. The Mountain West would need the Dallas-Fort Worth market area for TV negotiations giving us an advantage. We should be okay on the other sports (except women's basketball) and they will have trust us on football based on financial commitment and coaching upgrade. While I'd prefer CUSA this alignment would be a bit more fair and balanced. Under that scenario our division would likely consist of Wyoming, Colorado State, Air Force, New Mexico and UTEP; certainly better than what we now have (none).

  28. Hey guys – me again… This board has been a great read the last few days You’re fan base basically went through the same “transformation” I went through when Iowa State hired DMac. We fired Jim Walden after 12 years of COMPLETE AND TOTAL futility and I was hoping for a “spash” hire… I was like “Dan who???” when they announced McCarney. But then I watched his introductory press conference… Wow… I had the same reaction y’all (is that proper use of y’all?) are having now. He’s impressive, eh? The best part is the fact that it’s not coach-speak from him. The man will to follow through and do what he say’s he’ll do. Trust me… good times are ahead for you folks. I am so extremely happy for everybody at UNT right now! I never in my wildest dreams thought I was as sentimental about DMac as I am, but this whole thing brought out the fond memories of him at I-State Believe me, I’m a MEAN GREEN fan now! It’s good to have a Texas team I can actually root for (can’t stand UT, A&M or Tech for obvious reasons). TCU and SMU… meh… don’t care... UNT on the other hand… I’m going to be sporting the MEAN GREEN gear up here in northern Iowa! Speaking of that… where is a good place you can get UNT hats, etc. online? Good luck fellas… go out and kick some ass now! I’m going to probably be bothering you on this message board from now on… lol… sorry in advance.

  29. Apparently you've never heard of the 95-96 Umass squad. All five starters played 30 plus minutes. Gee, hope we dont end up like them in the Final Four.

  30. I don't care about pro potential? As a college player Josh is a first ballot HOF'er at NT. I am sure Tristan gets in, but not sure it'll be his first year eligible. Josh will almost certainly. I've followed this program for some years now, and I'd say he's one of the best 4-5 I've ever seen. Obviously I don't back as far as those that saw the Blakeley or MVC days, but still..I go back 20 some odd years! I mean Brandon Kennedy was our best football player in the early 2000's. I don't care if he never played in the NFL and we had other guys that did. Pro success has nothing to do with how good a guy is in college.

  31. Who would be opposed to the student section going around the the entire lower bowl, maybe like 10 rows up. I know that the alumni will be pissed because their losing their eye sight and cant see 10 feet in front of them but why are students up in the nose bleeds?? They/We need to be in the PIT yelling and screaming our love for this University.

  33. I think we all know this is a good team, but we want them to be better. Such is the nature of fandom, especially in the message board world. The scary thing is the lack of depth now throughout the roster. If, god forbid, Hogans or George goes down, there is no one right now that can fill their shoes. And basketball tip 101 for the board. When a team plays a 2-3 defense against you, put one post high and the other low on the opposite side. Impossible to cover both. So frustrating to NEVER see this happen with this team.

  34. Merchandise with logos sells better than merchandise without logos. The SOW logo is very sharp and we need to use it more often. Iowa State uses Cyclones, but has Cy the Cardinal as their mascot, because having a logo that's just a cyclone would be about as dumb as branding yourself with green shirts that only say "North Texas" or "Mean Green". On top of that, our fight song still says eagles, we still do the talon for kickoffs and free throws, our spirit group is the talons, and we have the Eagle Angels. Not to mention Scrappy and the eagle statue in the middle of campus. This inferiority complex over our nickname kills me.

  37. Criticizing JJ right now is pretty stupid, in my opinion. Even I get frustrated by some of the things he does, but the fact remains that we've won 16 straight games against unranked teams (thanks, CMJ!), a streak that dates back to January of last year. The last time we lost to an unranked in-state team, home OR away, was 2008. People bitch because we can't handle a press, then all of a sudden we're breaking the press consistently. People bitch when we don't press, then we go out and win two games because of a suffocating press. People bitch when we start slow, but we win anyway. People bitch when we don't maintain huge leads, but we win anyway. People bitch that we don't do X, then we do X and they start bitching about Y. People bitch because we don't have a 6'4" pass-first point guard with NBA ready assist skills dishing to a 7' interior monster that scores 15 per game and shatters backboards on a nightly basis. It's always some damn thing. In this case, someone was complaining that we aren't starting their hypothetical lineup that not only completely doesn't fit the offense many of these players have run for the past 3-4 years continuously, but also ignores who our strongest players are and how they play best together. Right now, we're in basically a 7 man rotation: The 4 guards, the 2 starting posts, and a split between Holmen and Edwards for the 7th spot. It's not ideal, but it's not unprecedented as a successful approach at the college level. Especially with the lineup we're putting on the floor now. The guys have all proven they can handle the workload we'll need from them all season, and they've proven it here, in this system. Tristan: Averaged 30.3 mpg in 09-10 Josh: 35.8 mpg in 09-10 Dominique: Injured early in 09-10, but averaged 30.3 mpg in 08-09 Add it up, and our three starters have all proven over the course of their most recent full season that they can combine to play 96.4 minutes per game. That leaves 23.6 minutes per game available for guard subs. And guess what? Shannon handled 23.2 mpg in 09-10, even though he started the year as a 2nd option to Richard Thomas. If anything, he can do MORE court time than what he showed last year. Looks to me like, barring injury... Our guards have already shown they can handle the minutes we'll need from them over the grind of a full season. If one of them gets hurt, then we'll see how we react to it then. But for now, you don't revamp your entire offense IN CASE someone gets hurt. Not when things are rolling along nicely. Not when everyone has proven they can handle the workload. Odufuwa: Averaged 31.5 minutes per game in 2009-10, and he's pulling 32 per game right now. Right on track with what he did last season. Kedrick is pulling 29, and he's looking GREAT so far. That leaves about 20 minutes to be distributed among Knox, Holmen, Edwards, and Spencer (assuming he comes back soon). And I think they'll be able to handle it just fine. Whatever JJ does that may frustrate any of us, it keeps working. This year, we've had four in-state teams come at us, each with something to prove by beating us. Each of them took their best shot, each coach wanting to take us down to show their bosses and their fans that their own program had taken a step forward. Each team played absolutely brilliantly for long stretches or nearly all of their game against us. And every time, we took their best shot and wound up standing at the end. Right now, things are good, good, good. We're injured, and it's still going good. We're shorthanded, and it's still going good. One of the nice things about it is that this year, more people seem able to enjoy it without being paranoid that doom and gloom are on the horizon. We've already taken one or two seasons' worth of shots, and we're still 5-1 with what looks like an easier than usual road ahead of us. Criticize away, but keep a sense of perspective and acknowledge that where it ultimately matters, we're doing brilliantly.

If you brought all your student friends who needed so much space because it was overflowing the Pit Crew section you could have sat there. It is not really a problem. Students can be right on the court everywhere except right in the middle. It is not really a problem. Also, it is not really a problem.

  40. Before Tasty comes in and assaults me with a batch of his oh-so-delicious baklava, I know it's waaaay to early for this. UNT's RPI is 24 and their Sagarin rating is 109 (I think both actually dropped after last night with UTA being so low). In both rankings, UNT is tops in the Sunbelt. Pretty cool to see even if it doesn't mean anything at this time. If both of those can get leveled out at around 40, an at-large would be a reasonable possibility, although I suspect Johnny better be lobbying the committee right now because, well, you know, we wouldn't want UNT taking a spot away from somebody like a 61 RPI North Carolina, now would we?

  44. That won't happen unless he wins in the tournament. Losing to Kansas by 33 does not get you a better gig. Watching a post up offense where the 2 posts rarely rotate positions in the paint (no movement) is mind numbing. Leaving all 3 timeouts on the board while you play 6 players and blow a 20 point lead doesn't insprie confidence by future employers. I love this team, and think they probably go 11-5 in conference and win the west division, but to ignore problems with coaching and depth and to bash a guy that makes really good points is so.... fanish? (By bash, I am talking about everyone who gave the guy negatives, not you in particular).

  47. Do we know for sure that he called her? I would think for him to call, she probably had something more serious than just "The athletic department seems to be making alot of bad decisions." I doubt very seriously that is how he obtained the number. Chances are, she had something worse on there and RV contacted the cheerleading sponser to tell her about it and get Ashley's number. Plus, since she is the CAPTAIN and the leader of the cheerleaders it is more an issue than some others. Hell, at least they finally care about the football team. Now if we can just get them to work on their cheers, that'd be grrreaaaaat.
