And in breaking news...there are still disgruntled intellectuals who can't see the bigger picture of what a successful sports program can bring to North Texas.6 points

It has been a long time since I have been this excited about this program. What a way to start a press conference with announcing the hire of Coach Canales. I have been trying for over a month to get information about season tickets to the new stadium. Up until now I could only get info on club seats. They are finally ready I have an appointment tomorrow at 10:00. I feel like buying a whole section.5 points

It was one year ago today, that Officer Tina Griswold, Officer Ronald Owens, Officer Gregory Richards, and Sargeant Mark Renninger of the Lakewood, Washington Police Department were murdered as they sat in a coffee shop preparing for their shifts. The officers were all sitting at a table working on their mobile data terminals, when the suspect approached the counter, then turned and opened fire. In the ensuing seconds, he killed two officersbefore his 9mm jammed. He pulled a .38 and killed a third, before being wounded by the forth officer, whom he killed during the ensuing stuggle. The suspect told friends and family members that he specifically wanted to kill police officers. He was killed by a Seattle Police Officer 2 days later when he was observed in possession of a stolen vehicle. Rest In Peace my brothers and sister. We'll take it from here. Coach Mac to Chico- "Mike, give me a year or two and I'll do everything I can to get you your Head Coaching job." Chico to Mac-"I'm in, I liked working with you at USF and I think we can do some great things here soon."3 points

Hopefully Coach Mac will say something like this: "We will be setting higher goals not seen around here since a former boss of mine worked here. In fact, you see what has been happening at Boise and Fort Worth of late? " Welcome to Mean Green Country, Coach McCarney! GMG!3 points

The entire D line for the Florida Gators has decided to follow me to UNT and play for the Mean Green3 points

Dan McCarney could turn us into a monster. You have to consider that at Iowa State he had several factors working against him: -Smallest budget in the Big 12 -Took over a team going into the Big 12 North which included four teams that had just finished with 10 wins seasons and Top 10 finishes (1995: Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, and Kansas State all won 10 or more and games and all finished in the AP Top 10). -Inherited a team that had gone 0-10-1 the season before he arrived. -Ames, Iowa is in the middle of nowhere and the best players from the state usually went to Iowa or Nebraska. McCarney did what I've long argued we should do - he went out of state to recruit. The guy pounded Texas and Florida. He pulled Seneca Wallace out of California. He basically took Iowa State from an afterthought to a legitimate player for talent in many regions of the country. He's a hard worker. To pull Iowa State from where they were to the point where they went to five bowl games and beat Iowa five seasons in a row, is really, just a notch below what Bill Snyder did at K-State and Gary Barnett did at Northwestern. He took a perennial loser with very little football history and made them legitimately competitive. Having McCarney in the DFW area with the new stadium, with his nationwide recruiting reputation, this thing could take off really quickly. I think we had the best coaching staff in the Sun Belt this year. It will be unarguably the best next year. This really is an exciting hire!3 points

Just a quick greeting from one of many Iowa State fans who have lots of fond memories of and appreciation for Dan. Great man, Great coach, Great to represent your school. UNT is now one of my favorite schools. Comes right after ISU, Whoever is playing Iowa and or Nebraska(AKA Run From Texas). Nothing but the best to you and Dan. Go Cyclones and Go Green!2 points

I think that they would probably choose to say nothing as opposed to giving a quote on how great he is.2 points

Damn It! Now we have to wait until next year to see this team play. I haven't been this excited about NT football since late in the year 1965.2 points

that would be awesome to pull this guy. however, he's the number 3 strongside defensive end in the country. there's a couple better programs in the country that will have a shot at him first. WORK YOUR MAGIC, MAC!2 points

Look I like a solid intellectual conversation as much as the next guy who actually likes to stimulate his brain but in reading just a couple articles on Kevin's site Think Denton I can see that his personality and concerns are not in conjunction with what we are striving for. His meetups involve "adult beverages" and talking about worldly and societal dilemmas. For all intensive purposes we can brand him an intellectual and I am sure he would agree. He would be the type that would argue that a Culture Fair or a Arts Festival would be more beneficial to the school than cranking out a successful sports program. He is entitled to his opinion of course....but I would wager to say that most of this board disagrees with that sentiment. He is the Ying to our Yang at North Texas. We have already long established that this school has plenty of the artistic minded students and alum.....what we are striving to carve out here is a culture that involves more pride in the University and being a "Mean Green" rather than just graduating and moving on. We all can agree that the most successful way to do this is to have successful sports programs that stirs up the Alum base and gets them re interested in the school and what is happening on the campus. We have enough Ying...we need more Yang. The argument that sports doesn't make a university profit is bogus and full of erroneous presumptions. The only stats that people are concerned with are the Revenue-Cost equation and does it leave a positive balance? What you don't see is that where does the public come into play? When was the last time that you saw a intellectual hipster sporting a UNT shirt on a daily stroll outside of Denton? If we relied on the public to hear about our school only based on it's intellectual achievements then we would be doing a giant disservice to the goal of generating interest (both regionally and nationally). We need a winning football team like Dallas's City Council needs an enema! That is the only way I can see us getting those 100k some odd Alum in the area to quit throwing away their monthly mailers from UNT begging for money. How many of us have logged in online and donated even just a modest $100 gift after getting excited about a win...or a change in the program...or an award for the team? Ok...rant is over. Your title can be misleading. It isn't so much criticism of hiring McCarney as it is the price we payed for a new coach. This is just an annoying complaint. Do I think it is unfortunate that coaches get paid ridiculous amounts while some in academia get paid next to nothing while putting in crazy hours? Sure. But, in today's world, there is a huge value on perception and this is the game we have to play. Besides, there are so many benefits to such a program. Where else will you see well over 20 thousand current and former students together to rally behind their university? It is a unifying organization that brings everyone together for a common cause. One opinion of Gregg'os tirade at UNT which I just happened to be listening to when he went off on the air: Firstly, when Greg Williams was on The Ticket he used to praise UNT almost any time the subject ever came up (which was rare on the Hard Line). When we were regaining D1-A in 1994 he was especially complimentary of North Texas and its bright future. Heck, you'd thought the guy was a UNT grad or something. Secondly: Greg Williams knows we have a huge network of NT alums and Mean Green fans in the DFW Metroplex most of whom have radios? His present station has a promo saying "we know we used to suck but give us a new shot" or something to that affect so Greggo and company are trying desparately to get new listeners and Greg Williams knows if he can piss of the Mean Green Nation fan base he will get some listeners. His tirade yesterday was partly because no one was calling in at all to talk to the guys--it seemed most obvious he was trying to egg some of our fans on to call in and it seems that none did while I was listening and I sure as hell didn't. Ratings, folks, it's all about ratings...2 points

Ya I'm just going to put it out there that I am also on the team. I Didn't want to say anything to avoid the stigma that comes along with admitting to be a male cheerleader. Any way I have confirmed there was a call made to her before anyone else in the chain of command, and thats all that was said on Facebook (we had our own mini version of the fired/interim/new coach thing). As for the cheers/chants, we had a list of 15 or so until we were told at the first football game not to use the letter "U" or anything with "University" or "eagles". So there goes all but about four. And this is where the rant starts: Saturday was my 28th and final home Fball game to cheer at and it was easily the worst for participation on the Alumni side. Thank God for the Eagle Angels and random wives/moms in the crowd. With out them I would rather yell at a brick wall. It is pathetic trying to start any kind of chant on that side. We have arguments about who has to go to cheer on the alumni side. I love cheering at basketball games not because the team wins, but because I only have to attempt to get the alums off their buts for 30 seconds every other timeout. If it wasn't for the T-shirt toss I would think you were dead. Are you jealous of the KState fan's K-S-U CATS chants. That is what a real fan base sounds like. As for those of you who do participate, I know who you are (mainly because there are so few) and I am truly grateful for your support. Thank you. GMG.2 points

So how do you sell Canales outside of Denton? It would be just about impossible. But if he gets something more power to him.2 points
-
There is just about no way Canales is hired as a Head Coach this year in FBS, who could sell him to their fan base. Just because some head hunting service puts his name in the hat does not mean much.2 points

I was at the Whataburger on Ft Worth Drive last night and I was upset to discover that all of the UNT Alumni pictures and posters have been removed and replaced with the typical pictures of older Whataburgers. It was a sad sight.1 point

This is a very interesting proposition, as well, and one I haven't really considered. If UNT is offered a Mountain West invitation to directly replace TCU in the Dallas/Fort Worth market, I would be very surprised if that was turned down. The level of competition and notoriety of the Mountain West even without TCU, Utah, and BYU is far more credible then any other non-Power $ix league.1 point

Agree......... Rawlins, Neinas and Villarreal should be sitting on the doorstep of MWC Commish' Craig Thompson's office sometimes before this weekend or get him a Southwest Airline ticket for all 3 of them to pick him up at DFW Airport in our fancy UNT tour bus for a look-see at our stadium, the Super Pit, our campus and then a nice, long constructive meeting in the Athletic Center.1 point

I don't understand the love affair with Rice, Tulane, SMU and Tulsa. I know they close and bring some fans but we not like those institutions. The smaller private schools do not thrill me because they will never have those big fanbases to lean upon when they are great. If you get Boise or Air Force or Reno rolling football you will get good amounts of traveling fans. Reno and Boise are already rolling. I know we are not a basketball states but you step outside of Texas and you have a passionate and different ballgame, especially in the highly competitive MWC. UNLV has already beaten Virginia Tech and Wisconsin this season with a looming trip to Louisville on the horizon. New Mexico beat Tennessee I believe and know they recently played out in Berkley. Last year UNLV beat down Arizona and Louisville in the Thomas and Mack. Again I am going to stick to my argument about UNT and us beginning to think of ourselves in a better light than some of us do. You are right, we are not TCU. We are North Texas and joining a league that recently lost teams to the Big East and Pac 10 makes me wonder what UNT can do on a bigger stage. Not to mention the MWC is about to settle down. All of the current members are not going anywhere. The ancy ones left in BYU, Utah and TCU. A stable MWC or a stable Sun Belt not even close. Now if CUSA calls they better call quick because I just cannot see the MWC not sniffing around the 5th largest media market soon. Go Bold. Go Quality. GO Mean Green!1 point

If an intact Western USA spot looks unlikely, I'd love to see a Eastern MWC consisting of Houston, NT, NM, CSU, AF, and Wyoming. Oh well, it never hurts to dream. .1 point

If they've given up their dream of being an AQ conference, I could see NT getting serious consideration. If that's still their goal, the only Texas team I can see them bothering with is Houston.1 point

It has been so great to have a decent home OOC schedule this year. Three Tuesdays in a row.....Tech, Rice, UTA. It's so much better than last year's....which was awful. (When your top OOC home game is Southeast Louisiana or Jackson State.....that's bad). This year....is great.1 point

I think this right here is huge. We can win as many football games as we want, have a new stadium, a baseball program, a good basketball program, but if your own community doesn't even support you, then I think you have a bigger problem. By the way, its not just athletics. I think NT as a whole needs to shape up into a more selective, academically competitive university. You can say all you want about rankings being bulls***, but fact of the matter is parents look at those when looking at schools for their kids. Selectivity=kids being happier here that they went to a competitive school= more pride in athletics, and academics1 point
