That is such as Bull**** comment. Canales can not win with some of you guys. You do realize the administration basically kicked him to the curb, so why should he still have allegiance to UNT. You whine that he is self-promoting and he brings the fans to the games despite a miserable season and depleted ranks, goes out into the community and then is told see you later do not let the door hit you on the way out. The pipe dream of Canales staying on as OC is sad. Canales has been nothing but classy, but all he gets in return is a bunch of ungratefulness. Oh thats right every team he played sucked so bad a trained F'n monkey could have done the same, so I assume then DM will have this team winning 7-8 games next year since he has 12 years of experience to go off of.4 points

Okay. But...is it okay if Mike Canales doesn't get a head coaching this year? I mean, I wanted him hired here, but there reality was that Rick and Rawlins had probably had discussions prior to the season about the possibility of Dodge failure and firing. So, they likely already had a list of potentials that they contacted when they canned Dodge. Again, I was for keeping Canales, but my guess is wheels were already in motion when he surprisingly won two of his first three. There would be nothing wrong with him staying here or going somewhere else next year as a coordinator. His credentials won't be any worse for it, and probably will be better if his offenses continue to do well. Let's also not forget that when Canales became head coach, he gave the play calling to Conroy Hines. Canales did a good job pulling the team together from a motivational stand point. But, we need to give credit all the way around on a surprisingly good finish. Best of luck always to Coach Canales and Coach Hines, whether they are kept here or go elsewhere. Both did a great job here.3 points

So true. It's disrespectful to those who came before us. Just think of the great men we honored last Saturday and what they accomplished during their time here? I love answering the questions we get like at Clemson when their alumni would ask Emmitt and I "What is a Mean Green?", My reply is simple: It's an Eagle with TEETH! The look on their faces trying to figure out if I'm serious or not is golden. Rick3 points

Does anyone find it weird that Canales refers to himself in the 3rd person all the time?3 points
-
I too would've liked to see Canales as our next HC. But does anyone else not see it being a problem to keep him around the program? He was obviously well liked by the players, many who went the social media route to express their anger towards the decision. I could totally see McCarney having a tough time establishing his voice in the room with Canales staying here. We don't need that. We need to follow McCarney and we need the players following him.3 points

This is an honest question, and I don't mean any offense to it, because I've re-written it about 10 times and it sounds condescending every time (I swear I don't mean it to be). But, what makes everyone think he'll go out and get a head coaching gig elsewhere? Does he even have any other previous head coaching experience? As an outsider looking in, I see a guy that coached a handful of games and the lost majority of them (did he even win any games he coached in?). I know a lot of you like how he motivated guys and how they responded to him, but if the best thing you can put on your resume is "I lost to Kansas State by only 8 points" I just can't see why someone not associated with the program or him would look at him as leading an FBS program.3 points

First off, this is a good move all around for DFW football. It's a win, win, win really. Obviously for TCU it's a win because they are going to an AQ conference (easily the weakest and easiest to stay undefeated in) so their undefeated seasons will have "meaning". Don't get me started on the joke that is ESPN analysts saying they weren't legit before, but now there is no longer any built in BCS crap excuse. Add to this that the UT's, aTm's, OU's of the world have now lost their single best piece of ammunition against TCU. The "yeah they're good but can you ever play for a national title there?" pitch just went out the window. Sorry Big XII. Also, their basketball just got significantly better just by association. The flipside is that the Big East (though they've never needed the help) now has a reason to come into DFW to play in front of recruits EVERY year. This is a win for NT because it opens up a spot somewhere. (They're already on ESPN radio talking about how SMU is a natural travel partner and how they help "deliver" the DFW market-- I'll conveniently ignore the fact that NT, if put in an AQ conference, would dwarf any/all advantages SMU could offer by sheer force of alumni alone) IF, and it's a big IF, SMU could get into the BE (or MWC)it would leave no DFW team in CUSA. That's good for us. If Houston leaves CUSA too it really opens things up for us because now they're looking for two and we look attractive along with La Tech. No matter how the musical chairs work it puts the onus on RV and company to have us sitting somewhere better when the music stops. I say call the BE and mention the prospect of a travel partner with 100,000 alumni in that DFW TV market you're trying to secure. Think our fans wouldn't come to the stadium for Louisville, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, etc? Let's not even think about how quickly NT/TCU tickets would get gobbled up. Think they wouldn't tune in in DROVES to watch us play on national TV? The biggest winner though may be SMU. SMU sits in a decent position to follow TCU east or to be in the running for their open slot in MWC. Even if they don't move at all they're still better off. It has been proven that teams from non-AQ conferences can get to BCS bowls (Hawaii and Boise from the WAC, TCU and Utah from MWC). IF, and again a big IF, SMU were to run the table under the current landscape...that is, with TCU still in MWC...they'd have an outside chance at making real national noise. With TCU gone to BE there is now that "marquee" team on SMU's schedule every seaon in the Iron Skillet game. A ranked TCU out of the MWC is one thing...a ranked TCU out of the BE is another. All around DFW just became a LOT more exciting in sports.3 points

I wasn't worried it was about me, because I haven't really weighed in either way. Anyone hailing anyone of our guys on the list as the second coming should be ignored at this point -- I can make you a long list against all four of the top guys and probably would be doing that right now if it wasn't already over. In all honesty, the more negatively the folks on this board react, the more I feel better about the decision. Your posted thread is not really about what TCU fans think to me though. It's about a bunch of wanna-be Frogs who go to our school going out of there way to spread negative and begging their heroes at killerfrogs to validate them. The thread is little more than one of them saying why this sucks over and over again while showcasing what a terrible persuasive letter writer he is.3 points

Because we have the biggest inferiority complex of any college football fanbase in the nation. Some of us see a guy campaigning to get a head coaching job (any head coaching job, by the way. Mike Canales said as much in the K St. postgame interview about Mike Canales, said Mike Canales) and mistakenly believe he loves us soooo much, we must keep him, despite performing at a level that any decent college coach would be expected to perform at any other university in America. Thank god we aren't a 16 year old girl, because we would have already had three kids. Because some of our fan base believe in moral victories (Wow! We only lost to K St. by 8?? This guy MUST be the next Vince Lombardi). Because we are a relatively small program and people get sold by a head coach that makes a personal plea to them, even if he does come off as a used car salesman. Because we retained a coach that lost to Rice, RICE, 77-20 (and they could have scored over 100, RICE!!!) for another year after he went 1-10 that year. Because we are North Texas, and 2-3 is alright by us. I hope this answers your question. And, yes, it does leave many of us shaking our heads, also.3 points

Wow. Where shall I start. First, we have no idea of went on behind the scenes of this search. We are calling this a terrible hire; we are disappointed in RV;here UNT goes again; yadda yadda yadda. We were not in the interviews, we don't know who was in the search or who was not in the search. We have a head coach now, who if I think correctly had the number 4 ranked defense in the country (playing in the SEC) and coached in a national championship - wow UNT you chose a terrible HC. Give me a f'ing break. Yes we loved Coach Chico and he did a great job, Fran would have been a great hire, Mike Stoops would have been great. Yes we are offering him about 500k. Great. That shows UNT is making an effort to do something. But of course - people are saying - well, if we can pay him 500k, then we can pay coach Fran 500k. But this is a coach would could not get the job at UNLV. AGAIN, we don't know anything. I guarantee you - the same people who are bitchin and moanin about this hire and writing RV and all this other bullshit, are going to be the ones that are going to be on the UNT bandwagon when we go to a bowl, or win a conference championship, or have a huge win at home. This reminds of Ron Washington with the Rangers. Everyone hated him and bashed him until he took the Rangers to a World Series. How about we show some faith and confidence in who was chosen as the HC, rather than trash it. How about we give the new HC a f'ing chance before we pass judgment. I could give a damn what Texas State does or UTSA or TCU or SMU - I am a UNT Alumni. I care what UNT does. It makes me sad as a UNT Alumni to read these comments. Who would wanna come here and coach? UNT has not done shit in years in football, but suddenly we think that the next hot head coaching commodity wants to come here and save the world. All I can do is laugh. I get so tired of coming on here and reading nothing but negative stuff about this hire. UNT is truly starting fresh - a new $78 million stadium, a coach making $500k (when did we ever think that was going to happen at UNT) and a new coaching staff (hopefully keeping coach Chico). If I pissed some of you off, I am sure you will eventually get over it. We got the best coach, for UNT, at this moment. Welcome Coach Mac!!!!!3 points

sorry but this is really stupid... the super pit is awesome man... the only thing it needs is better screens... its seats over 10k and we only got 7k for Texas Tech... i mean look at all the pluses for the super pit.... awesome location beautiful to look at (mini reunion arena) 10k nice seats not a bad seat in the house to watch the game only problems are the screens and the concessions... which could be fixed very easily if we wanted too i say build a baseball field for cryin out loud, not a basketball arena. we already have one2 points

This is Big! UNT must start getting our business in order. The Coach Mac attack may work eventually in our going up the re-alignment ladder, its just the last 6 years that may haunt us with some but we are no worse than SMU was when they entered CUSA.; in fact, I think we are better off now than they were then. Coach JJ has basketball rising to an apparent new level and that will be a plus for North Texas. GMG2 points

Mike Canales, the guy some of you want to discount as "not having enough experience" or as nothing more than a "feel good story", has done nothing less than have the best job interview I've seen in a long, long, long, time. Let's review. He has two wins as our head coach. Doesn't seem like much but let's really consider it. His two Sunbelt losses are to Troy and ULM. The belt will have two bowl eligible teams this season, FIU and Troy, and one, ULM, who would have gone bowling but for a close loss to ULL today. I know, I know, no Sunbelt team is any good and blah blah blah. Aren't we all on here singing McCarney's praises though because "any decent coach could get us back to the top of this conference"? Your words, not mine. If we can give Dan McCarney token faith because he may get us back to the top of the very conference you guys want to tear down when it comes to Canales then where does our double standard end? He took over Todd Dodge's team. The same team with a literal MASH unit standing on the sidelines. The same team that some of you wanted to use as justification for bringing Dodge back again because no coach could supposedly be expected to win with the deck stacked against him like this. What did he do? Only make them believe in themselves and this program again. Only cause them to have a meeting with RV after the game today to plead for THEIR coach's job. Keep your skins on the wall. To turn around a program like North Texas, one without the resources of even an Iowa State, THIS is what it will take. We just got done playing K-State to within 8 points. Eight points. And all it took for them to beat this coach you want to discount is: 1)Three dropped interceptions 2)Playing Baine, a backup (actually fourth string), quarterback for a large part of the fourth quarter 3)A shanked punt 4)Amazingly, only two penalties against the Wildcats all game long This is the same K-State team who is now 7-5. The same K-State team that put up a whole 10 points less, but surrendered 27 less, against the UT team so many of you want to defend at every turn (houstonmeangreen, thoughts?). The list of teams K-State managed to beat by more than eight this season...UT, Kansas, and UCLA. Am I saying K-State are world beaters? No, not at all. But let's keep some perspective. The last time we lined up against K-State we lost 45-6 (that was a 5 win Wildcat team). When was the last time we stayed on the field against a AQ team for an ENTIRE four quarters? I'll wait.......................... (And if you want to mention that Baylor game bear in mind that we were in the midst of one of our marches to New Orleans at the time) I don't believe McCarney will do anything that Mike Canales couldn't have done. And when/if we sit here having this same tired discussion four years from now please don't try to burn RV at the stake. His words to me after the game, "I want you to know I do listen to the kids, but some decisions are not mine alone to make." So when you want to build that statue for Rawlins or Neinas at the new stadium remember that McCarney is on their head too, if not more.2 points

Congrats on bringing in Dan McCarney. I'm from Iowa so have seen what he's like and I think this is a good fit for him and the school. I'll be putting together a list of possible assistants for you guys shortly. With the change in OL coach and firing Todd Dodge, I've spent more time on this board than any other team in the country, so with that along with hiring McCarney, I guess I've become a follower and a fan of the Mean Green. I would like to echo this statement. It is nice to such positive feedback coming from his old school. Thank you ISU fans for coming to our board to share your personal experiences regarding McCarney. I really wanted Leavitt. But, the more I hear about McCarney, the more I like him.1 point

A bowl bid in year one? Why are you badgering him to expect more wins from McCarney in one season than most fans here expected from Dodge in four? I'd like to see UNT compete for the Sun Belt championship in year one. I think it's ridiculous to expect it, however.1 point

ISU fans, thanks for the grand words! I think for many, he just is not a familiar name in Texas! Can't wait to meet him Tuesday! Thanks again...1 point

He will be out in the community selling UNT like crazy. While at ISU he was the best ambassador the school had. Being such a rah, rah guy - it's hard to not get excited about what he is selling. It's easy to sell something you believe in, and no doubt he wouldn't have taken the UNT job if he didn't think he would be successful. You guys are going to love him as your head coach. He's accountable, honest, embraces challenges, and most of all is a psychotically hard working guy. As you can tell i'm a huge Mac fan. I guess my judgment is clouded by the fact that the 12 years or so before he got to Ames, we sucked as much as a football team can suck. He brought our football program back from the dead - so he'll always have my respect for that. It cannot be overstated... our football program was circling the drain when he was hired.1 point

Well, what head coaching experience did McCarney have before he was hired by Iowa State? I believe the answer is NONE. Personally I saw Coach Canales as an absolute steal as a head coach candidate for North Texas. He was energetic, positive, VERY KNOWLEDGABLE and I can't imagine that he would be anything but a great recruiter. Coach Canales also has pro coaching experience.....how much does McCarney have? McCarney may have worked for Hayden Fry, but Coach Canales (as far as I'm concerned) WAS the second coming of Hayden Fry. How do I know that you ask? I know because I watched Hayden Fry at his first gathering at North Texas (as well as his total career here) where he wowed an auditorium full of VERY cynical people (professors, staff, and students) back in 1973. Mike Canales is EXACTLY like him.1 point

It's nice that the players finally got a chance to play under a guy who had at least some concept of how to coach a college team. Even though they only knew him for less than a year, they got attached when someone motivated and inspired them. If Canales could do it that fast, I think McCarney can win players over, too. And anyone who suffered through the past few years that decides they want to pack it in and leave, even though we've finally got a real college head coach coming in here, and we're finally going to get to play in a palace of a stadium instead of the poopheap that was Fouts... Well, happy trails to them. And thanks for whatever they did to help generate the 8 wins we saw over the past 4 years. I think that whatever Canales did to forge player relationships in 9 months on campus and 6 weeks as a head coach, McCarney can do, too. And if Dunbar or anyone else doesn't want to play for a head coach other than Canales... Then I don't think they'll be playing D-1 football next season. I'll miss anyone who wants to leave, and I hope they'll change their minds. But if they want to go, let them go. Sticking with Dunbar, since he's obviously the star of the team coming back next year... If Dunbar doesn't want to play for McCarney, then James Hamilton or Brandin Byrd will. Galbreath led to Cobbs led to Jamario led to Cam Montgomery led to Dunbar, and Dunbar will lead to whoever the next guy is. We'll be fine.1 point

Mack Brown said his biggest recruit his first year at Texas was Ricky Williams staying for another year rather than going pro. McCarney's biggest recruiting challenge his first year may be getting to the returning players. They seem to be bitterly disappointed and stronly for Canales. McCarney will need to reach these returning players as well as recruiting new ones.1 point
