  1. I would guess his chance as HC for UNT just dropped from about 50% to less than 5% on this game...I don't see DeLo returning next year in any case.

  3. How do you know that we haven't already asked one, two, or all three of them? We are using Neinas - and by using Neinas, we can ask these questions through him - without having to release it to the newspapers or fanboys on the internet. That way if one, two, or all three of them turn us down - we can offer ole Chico the job and tell him (and the world) that he was the Number 1 choice from Day 1. Everyone feels good and nobody gets their feelings hurt. You notice that RV has not commented on this coaching search at all? That is by design. Believe it or not, they know what they are doing without the advice of internet posters I think that they have learned from past mistakes (or Lane has taught them a thing or two)!

  5. Hahahahahahahahaha....Benson better than Waters?.....man you guys are killing me. Benson has managed to kill a conference TWICE. Waters is trying to make something with nothing, Benson made nothing out of something.

  6. I very much agree with this assessment.....except for the Leavitt part. In the coaching show last week Canales mentioned that there were several very good players on the ULM team that were from the D/FW area. He indicated that in the future, if he is head coach, he wants to make sure that those guys come to North Texas. Before that, in one of his interviews, he said that one of his biggest priorites in recruiting would be defensive linemen. He said that championship teams all have great D-lines. Interesting comment from an OC don't you think? Even more interesting when you look at the results of yesterday's game where we didn't get adequate D-line play, since ULM averaged about 6 or 7 yards on every first down play. Plus thier QB had time to launch several long TD passes. Regardless of the reasons for the loss yesterday, IHMO we either need Canales to be our next coach, or we need someone just like this guy. On a very basic level, I believe that this guys gets us and knows what this program really needs. Leavitt built a program from nothing, but that's much easier to do than re-building a program that has had a bad record, a BAD IMAGE, and a VERY BAD ATTITUDE for decades. Let me repeat that FOR DECADES. People, it's like the difference in being a successful parent, and being a successful step-parent....with teenage step-children. Raising your own children from birth is challenging enough, but successfully taking over the parenting of someone else's children takes a special person. In this scenario, North Texas is the teenage step-children. Canales has already immersed himself into this challenge, and I believe that he has the best handle on what to do next with our step-child-like program.

  8. Thanks for the welcome. Especially you, Travis. That's very kind of you to expose my true nature to everyone beforehand so I don't have to pretend while everyone else figures it out.

  9. The Sun Belt is not harder this year than it has been in the past. I believe there is ONE team with a winning record coming into today's games and that team got absolutely hammered today. I do not believe that our next head coach is currently on staff nor do I believe that the University paid 40k for a firm to name a current coach. But who knows.

  10. The 83 yard touchdown run was AFTER the injury. Seems that Dunbar was in pretty good shape at that point. I have to agree wit the title of this thread. While I have really liked what Canales has done with this team, he was already a long shot and needed every win possible to help him. Whether or not it really should matter, today's loss hurt his chances.

  13. It's effing Kansas. An all time top 5 program...and a team that does not lose at home...4 Big XII loses in Self's time in Lawrence. They beat up good teams at Phog Allen (last year, Tech by 26...Mizzou by 19...Colorado by 20). And these teams play there every year. This is our first trip to, in my opinion, the second toughest place to play in country behind Cameron Indoor...and I don't feel at all like we embarrassed ourselves. We shot 42% from the field despite going 0-12 from 3...committed just 12 turnovers, our lowest number of the season. Are we still a ways behind the likes of Kansas? Hell yes, but if you didn't realize that going in to the game you should probably seek medical attention. There is not a scholarship player on that roster that wouldn't start and average double figures for us. Not one. Both Morris's, Taylor and if that man-child Robinson continues to refine his game are all first round, NBA draft picks...remember how excited we all were over Eric Tramiel, one of the top players we've had in the past decade, getting a try out with the Mavs this summer? Perspective. This game was a learning and growing experience for an already seasoned team. It will only help them going forward.

  14. So we shouldn't expect our top tier teams in the Belt to be competitive versus ranked opponents ? Close only counts in horseshoes , i don't like to play the woulda coulda game. If that's the case we just might be bowling this year SunBelt is garbage , simple as that. 10 years and we still haven't seen a team ranked and we average 1 bowl game win every 2 years for the conference

  16. I wasn't impressed by Riley all that much today. Several times I saw our players beat the coverage and Riley didn't give it to them... even when Riley had time. I believe it was because he simply can't get it to them that far. Riley knows his limitations. I look forward to seeing who gets the starting role next season. Riley will have a good shot. But, I think it will go to someone else.

  17. You make some obviously good points. The loss was not devastating but it was disappointing. I did not expect a win but I hoped that NT could at least show better than the other mostly nobodies that KU had beat this year. KU beat Washburn by 30, Emphoria St. 31, Longwood 38 and Valparaiso 35. Yes NT losing by 33 with a veteran ball club was worse than I hoped. It is only one game but I don't think getting blown out is much of a help to the program.

  20. You have to be kidding Canales has done nothing big picture wise to get the attention of another school? Who would sell this guy to another school well he won a few games with at team at the bottom against some other bottom dwelling teams. There is something to get excited about from an outside prospective?

  21. My understanding is the players have been looking forward to the change, I don't see anyone leaving under their own freewill, this gives them hope the same as many of us.

  22. North Texas will lose this week because of two words. Norm Hitzges. He picked us to win and that has been a death sentence pretty much throughout history.

  23. It's sad anyone considered the past 4 games as a tryout. It was in no way fair to Canales for that to be the case. His coaching career should be his selling point. Not interim status at NT. I just hope people stop blindly following him because he won a couple of games. There could be some really great candidates out there but people would emotionally jump on the Canales bandwagon. All coaches lose. Hopefully this will be over soon and we can focus on the future. I still think we need clean slate.

  24. Guys, the defense was horrible. We played to stop the pass and they run it all over us. We switch to stop the run, and they pass on us. ULM is a very young team and to lose to them even with our injuries was disappointing. Whoever NT gets for a new HC, NT should never lose to resource-less ULM.

  25. And yes....I don't think Deloach will be back next year.

  26. I don't think Canales did himself any favors. ULM seem to make adjustments. UNT did not. Our offense was horrible in the 2nd half. ULM did a good job game planning us. Dunbar had 3 yards in the 2nd half?

  27. Coaches like Dennis Francione may not have applied before, but with the "unseen on the Neinas radar" kind of head-hunting for UNT the best list of candidates he can produce, we could be in for a surprise or 2 of who else "might" be on the list; of course, all this is so under the radar we will never know who they are, either. (Which is probably best truth be known). As another alum pointed out "since everyone is in Monroe today might we have had a candidate or 2 or 3 take a peek at our new stadium in person today? GMG!

  28. Only 2 things missing for one those kind of rants, Silver, and I'm trying to remember what they are; but the content and length look pretty darn good to me; you can throw "hellsbells" in their every once in a while if you want, too. GMG!

  29. The WAC sucks as a conference fit for UNT. The WAC has always sucked, and will always suck as an option. Louisiana Tech sucks. To clarify, the WAC sucks.

  30. Thought about that, too. But our senior night will be February 26th, last home game against Denver. S. Meth will be on the road playing Marshall that day.

  31. I'll be honest enough to say that at the time his transfer was announced, it looked like a win for all parties involved. Collin was going to be the 6th or 7th guard option among Josh/Tristan/Shannon/Dom/Alzee/RJ McGhee. Despite his talent and dedication, he seemed very unlikely to get any real time on the floor. And at the time, we appeared to have a reasonably good shot at picking up one of a number of high value transfers (J'mison Morgan, Chris Babb, Marshall Henderson, among others). There was some discussion about whether we could free up a scholarship to get one or more of those transfer guys over the summer. In the end, it worked out about as poorly as possible for us. McGhee couldn't make it academically, none of the transfers wound up filling Mangrum's ship, and now Alzee is sitting out with injury problems. Instead of Mangrum sitting near the bottom of a 7 guard rotation, he would have been a critical 5th option in a 3 guard lineup. It looked like a win for everyone. Instead, we wind up light at guard and Mangrum is stuck as a walk-on for a godawful team slogging through what looks to be a godawful season.

  37. Very interesting I heard the same thing from others. Quantity alone means nothing its all about quality, it sounds very gimmicky, I wonder if any of the 71 would even rate an offer to a D1a school?

  42. Many dissed Dodge his first couple of years because players left. Now with a new coach, players leaving is just part of the process when a new coach comes in it now seems. My how times and attitudes change so quickly!

  43. North on the Blue lot we will be there at around noon. Those that stop by will be treated by the following menu: Home ground burgers toped with your choice of baby swiss or American, Brats soaked in beer for 24 hours prior to the game, Boneless Skinless Chicken breast marinated in my special Cajun seasoning and perfectly grilled to a tender juicy succulence, My hand crafted Sausage Stuffing balls, made from scratch starting with home ground pork seasoned to breakfast sausage and combined with home ground turkey, to create the base for the other ingredients. Followed by my home smoked brisket and pulled pork hand shredded and combined with my own BBQ sauce for a delectable BBQ meaty treat. Then John takes it to the next level by bringing a commercial meat slicer to the tailgate and hand carves his home roasted & smoked pork and ham for some incredible Cuban sandwiches that he will press before your eyes.

  45. Just as long as we bank enough to keep JJ with a contract in the $500k range, in case we need to. I can understand losing him for more than that, but not less.
    1 point
  46. Dodge's compensation package, according to RV at the time that he hired him, could have put him up over $400k average per year. I'd suspect that like most contracts, that was weighted towards the tail end of the deal. 4 years later, with a student fee in place to free up discretionary money and (hopefully) a BOR and president ready to open the pocketbook a little wider, I don't think another $100k is out of the question.
    1 point
  47. Yup. If we drop half a million on a football coach, make sure there's another $200k left in the piggy bank to get Johnny up to that level and in the same ballpark as Stew Morrill and Fran McCaffrey. Otherwise, programs like the ones Morrill and McCaffrey are running will easily be able to hire him away from us, like TCU did with Kent State's former coach.
