  1. Surely you guys get this. No one is going to pay someone to come in and publish a public report about what they are doing wrong. I'm sure his private report to Rawlins had praise, but also critizism that would not be flattering to the university if made public. It makes complete sense to pay someone outside of the university to assist with the coaching search. Someone that can protect the university if they get turned down by their 1st three choices and have to go with their 4th. Could you imagine the angst on this board if we found out 3 coaches turned us down? Much less the constant comparisons between those guys and the coach that actually did get the job. Notice that there are no leaks on this search? Neimas. No leaks on when interviews will occur? Neimas. People should just be happy that we are acting like a grown up athletic department for a change.

  2. I installed the first message board and was the site's tech guru for a year or so. Harry and I go back a bit. In fact last time I was in DFW he was kind enough to pick me up and tote me to the game where I consumed all the free beer I could get my hands on.

  4. No. Collin didn't get a lot of minutes at North Texas but I fully expected him to be the best player at S. Methodist the first time he stepped on the court.

  5. MaybeMCanales is "the guy" only if someone like Leach, Fran, or Leavitt can't be obtained. None of the three would likely deal directly with UNT unless they were assured the deal but might talk freely to Neinas.

  6. Jankovich was a good coach, but we're mighty happy with the guy we've got now. I've got several KU ties in my family--my sister is a grad, my uncle was dean of the COB (I think)--so I generally pull for KU, and certainly respect their tradition. Glad you stopped by to say hi. But the University of Kansas will rue the day they invited Johnny Jones' boys to set foot on the Phog floor.

  8. won't happen. we were in big west, and learned our lesson. closest rival is mnsu, which is 600 miles amd 11 hrs. from denton. i did not include la.tech, as they now have a choice of applying for admission to the belt, which i don't think will happen,or going independent in football, which may happen. it doesn't have to make sense, as we are talking about la. tech,a school with fans that live on the planet zeon and rarely beam down to reality. having said that, you must give benson credit. the wac has been on life support for years, and he still keeps it alive. yes, we would love to be in cusa, but won't happen as long as smu is a member. our best hope is that either they or tcu move on to greener pasters, which leaves a conference void in dfw market that we fill. the best thing we can do is to build our athletic program to the point we bring value to any conference. i firmly believe that we can accomplish this in the next 5 years, and hope to live long enough to see it. just an opinion.

  11. Just wanted to take a minute and thank the fans and the students for creating an awesome atmosphere that hasn't been seen in the Super Pit for a while. Standing on the floor it sounded like a cannon exploded when Josh hit the layup and then we made the second three in overtime. It's how it should be every night when students are here and when school is out we need to fill the gaps and still get a crowd in the Pit. With a crowd that size please let me know if there were problems or any good things that happened. And I promise to let the student section do their thing. I only stepped over because early on there were a lot of students but only about half of them up and chanting. By the end of the game they were rocking. It was the kind of crowd I've waited for and thanks for making it happen. GO MEAN GREEN!

  18. In a word, YES. Can't be helped now, but it would have been nice to see him be the only UNT player to play three or four NCAA games this season. He put a lot into UNT basketball and it took a lot out of him. I think he deserves a chance to stand at center court, get his jersey and a standing ovation on senior night.

  19. Actually, I think that the UNT new coach search process has just now officially begun to be honest. And "the guys" list you seem to think is set (from a college smack board to boot) will suddenly become larger till they cull it to the one that best fits North Texas in its most crucial hire in history in light of the high stakes of the marketing that will need to be UNT's most successful in its history as well. UNT needs to be able to promote itself to the point that it will receive the single-most contribution of $30,000,000 (which is what the naming rights of our new stadium is). This has never been a business as usual hire in Denton; at least, the kind that having Fouts Field as our home would most times produce for us. And like GrayEagle recently posted, I, too, am very grateful to Todd Dodge who in his first week at UNT said "we must get a new stadium at North Texas to compete." I don't think we would have this stadium happening now if he hadn't said that 4 years ago. GMG!

  22. He played his butt off for North Texas, including a lot of times where he played injured. I am happy for him that still gets to play D1 basketball, and hope he has a lot of success every night that SMU takes the court and loses. It is kind of weird seeing him in an SMU jersey, but hey, at least he did not go to Rice. It would be really weird to see him play for a different team in the Super Pit. We know SMU will not be coming to Denton anytime soon.

  26. To me, the vote seems to indicate that Canales is ahead of 6 of the 7 known commodity hfc's. Canales has over 20% of the vote. Only Leach has more votes. Leach is a proven coach, but I can't see him coming to UNT under any circumstances. If Nienas can land Leach for North Texas, then he would have earned every penny of that $40,000. Every rational UNT fan knows are chances of landing Leach are about as good as us signing the #1 recruiting class in the nation next season. This fact elevates Canales to the top spot in the poll. When we win on Saturday, and more fans change there vote to Canales, what new argument will you create to try and substantiate not supporting him for the head coaching job? I know you care about this program. You wouldn't spend your time on this blog of you didn't, but I can't understand why people don't respect the wins that have resulted from Canales taking over as the interm head coach. Why is a nationally proven head coach, who has proven nothing at UNT a better option then our nationally unproven interm coach, that has proven he can win at North Texas?

  30. I know lots of teams seem to go to pre-season tournaments each year like the Great Alaska Shoot-out, etc. OK, here's an idea I want to float. May be a pipe dream , but what about a pre-season tournament each year between UNT, TCH, UTA and SMU to determine Metroplex bragging rights for the year? Tournament could be held at either a neutral site or rotated between the campuses where each school hots (and makes the revenue off that) once every four years. I know, I know...hard to schedule, but don't you think it would be a home run for the fans and really set things up for the basketball season. UTA is building a new arena, so when it's complete, the tournament could be set up. What do you think? Anyone else think it would be Metroplex Basketball Madness????? Some of you who know the details of this to a much great extent than I ever care to know, chime in here and let's discuss this idea. It would be a "don't miss" event in the Metroplex I would think....what say you?

  32. While Auburn and Cam will get busted, the sad thing is that it will happen after the season. The BcS would sell its soul to keep a non AQ school out of the championship game. If by some miracle they do have to forfeit their games, allowing TCU or Boise to get into the title game, I will give you all my Star Wars figures. INCLUDING the Fett.

  37. One that will never step foot in Denton unless Ryan has a 4 or 5 star athlete he is recruiting to his next BCS school. Get real Plumm. Leach is not coming here and Canales is head-and-shoulders better than all of our previous hires that you term as "projects". He has been a BCS coordinator at programs in the top 25. He has shown he can win AT NORTH TEXAS and he is very positive about the program. He is like the perfect combination of bowl-run Dickey and positive-attitude Dodge.

  41. I'm just trying to get clarity. Do SBC wins count or not for the next coach? This has nothing to do with Canales, because I assume no one on here would have different expectations for a new coach than they do an interim who just got the job. It has to do with expectations. If Leavitt comes in, goes 9-3 (8-0 in conference), then he's had a bad year, because the metric is only non-conference opponents, so at best he's 1-3. And that's only if the 1 non-conference win was a good team, and not one that we deem we "should" beat, like Army or Ball State or someone. So then how many years will it take us to get to where we can judge this next coach, since we can't count games within the conference where we currently reside? That could take a while. Now, on the other hand, if someone like Leavitt comes in here and goes 3-9 (0-8 SBC), then he's had a great year, because he won the games that matter (OOC games), and the ones he lost don't count. I can't count games as losses if I'm not allowed to count them as wins. Okay, that's maybe too hyperbolic. Regardless, what I seem to be hearing is that our new coach should go at LEAST 11-1 if he expects to have credit for a winning season. That's 8-0 SBC, 3-1 OOC. Or, we could be nice and expect him to break even on the real games, 10-2 (2-2 OOC), assuming, of course, that he doesn't have an Army or Rice on the schedule, because those are teams we SHOULD beat. Again, I don't really care if Canales gets the job, if that's who the University feels is best suited. I have my personal preferences, but I'm no AD. I just think it's silly to say that what our team is doing right now doesn't count. It's an insult to the interim coach and the players, IMO. I was one of the critics of Dickey, based on his lack of OOC success, so I understand the basic argument. I felt like we had achieved all we could as the bully of the weak sisters of the SBC. And that's still true. We weren't going anywhere JUST beating the Belt, and the Sun Belt still won't get you any press. But you still have to win the Sun Belt FIRST. Otherwise, you get press like "UT GETS UPSET BY TERRIBLE SUN BELT TEAM!!!" and all it does is point to the failures of the big school, and not the successes of the small one. Sadly, however, at this point in time, we have our work cut out for us just to make it back to the level of competing for a Sun Belt regularly. And I mean regularly, not competing in year one, then struggling the rest of the way out. Many coaches (and this could possibly be the case with our new interim) immediately turn a team around in the first couple of year, before reverting back to the status quo. People build them up after that first year, and then conveniently forget them by year 3 or 4, when they're on the hot seat.

I mean the guy left the program with class, and wished the program the best. He's also been to the three games since he was let go, there is no need to continue running the guy down, get over yourself.
