  1. Just wanted to take a minute and thank the fans and the students for creating an awesome atmosphere that hasn't been seen in the Super Pit for a while. Standing on the floor it sounded like a cannon exploded when Josh hit the layup and then we made the second three in overtime. It's how it should be every night when students are here and when school is out we need to fill the gaps and still get a crowd in the Pit. With a crowd that size please let me know if there were problems or any good things that happened. And I promise to let the student section do their thing. I only stepped over because early on there were a lot of students but only about half of them up and chanting. By the end of the game they were rocking. It was the kind of crowd I've waited for and thanks for making it happen. GO MEAN GREEN!

  3. I see no one on GMG has ever had a change of heart, quit a job they didn't like, or dropped a class that wasn't going their way. I changed majors because I wasn't doing well, Biochemistry just wasn't for me. I'll one day quit my job in public accounting, leaving my coworkers at a disadvantage for tax season. Draw a parallel to your own life and stop acting like you wish death upon this man. GMG's obsession with Vizza is crazy, move on.

  4. Last night games: Chris Jones had 18 in a Garland Centennial 66 to 54 victory over the Colony. Forrest Robinson had 29 as Eastland won over Early 59-33. Trey Norris led S. Grand Prairie with 17 in a win over Southlake Carrol 61-47. Brandon Walton is averaging 16.6 for 2-3 Casper CC.

  5. Why are so many on this forum willing to give Canales a chance ONLY if he wins out, beats K-State, etc. So if he doesnt win out, (probably wont), my question would be: which of your USDA Prime Hero All-World dream coaches could keep our buick rolling with as many back ups as Canales has done? Maybe all of them...maybe none. I see alot of homework done by alot of knowledgeable fans on this forum. Seems to me that the info would be out there on any other coaches that have gone thru this (loss of players) and turned it around to YOUR liking. I would want to know if ANY big name coaches have ever lost +50% of their starters and kept it all afloat. If this is not the standard for all candidates, why does it seem to be the ONLY standard for Chico. Canales has basically taken our broken down Buick and gotten it back on the road and at least gotten it rolling in "drive" instead of "reverse", puking all the fluids out, smoke billowing out, fenders missing, etc. I am not a Canales ONLY guy. I doubt Chico will get the final nod under the very best of circumstances anyway. The yardstick should be the same for all considered. I AM waiting on the the perfect clone of Fry/Fran/Levett/Stallings/et al to get hired so we can finally get all the man-love drool mopped up before the next opener !! End of the season or not, we are on bald tires people....and going uphill with no gas !!!! Freddie Kitchens...where are you ???

  6. If the highest priority adversity I ever find myself facing in life is whether or not to attend a few college football games, I'll confess to either being a complete fool or an incredibly blessed person with no other concerns in life. If my character is defined by my attendance and donations while I'm concentrated on feeding the kid whose mother has disappeared into the depths of some Austin yoga cult while struggling to maintain grades and find a job, then I'd say your character definition metric is a bit off kilter.

  7. Admins please post this in the football board as well. My dream scenario is the following: Our football team shows up this weekend, like they have every week under Canales, and beats ULM. We are competitive against KSU. If we beat ULM, there is no way that you dont hire Canales. I dont care about a name, or hype. This guy has proven he knows how to win. Sh-t, he would have won half as many games as Dodge in onloy 4 games, and with the same injured team. What else does the guy have to do to impress some of you. he's motivated a team that pretty much knew they had no chance at a bowl. I'm not saying sign him long term, but the guy at least earns one more year.(I know that doesnt happen) ok, enough rant, If this happens, we will probably be able to get him cheaper than all of the "name" coaches that have been discussed, The reason this is big............ We can take the money that we save, and put it towards JJ. I know that there are only a few programs that pay BB coaches more than FB coaches, but JJ has more than earned it. We really have to figure out a way to come up with enough money to keep him. Outside of LSU, I really dont think he wants to go anywhere. Maybe not even LSU if we can put together a competitive package. He is so close to breaking us out, and if we can figure out how to keep him, we will be the next Gonzaga, Butler, St. Marys. Kids love this guy, and we are 2-3 more recruiting classes like the current away from being a top 25.

  10. Changed my vote to Canales. I've seen enough. I believe we will win on Saturday, and a 3-1 Belt record meets my standards, and is enough evidence for me that Canales can have NT challenging for the Sun Belt title and a bowl game next season. I don't know if any of the other candidates could have pulled that off under these circumstances.

  12. My guess is he is already the guy and a win at ULM will solidify it. K-State win is out of the question IMHO. I'm hearing that many of the front runners in the early stages have fallen by the wayside and that very few new ones have emerged because Canales has won some games with a less than healthy team that really loves playing for him.

  13. We're all familiar with the legendary facts about Chuck Norris that run rampant on the internet. Thing is, to this point, we've only gotten half the story. For example, Chuck Norris counted to infinity -- twice -- because that's how many points Mike Canales' offense rang up on him. If you have five dollars and Chuck Norris has five dollars, Chuck Norris has more money than you, but Mike Canales will take it all from both of you. Chuck Norris ordered a Big Mac at Burger King, and got one. He then delivered it to Mike Canales with an extra order of fries. Chuck Norris has never blinked in his entire life. Never. Mike Canales won't let him. When you open a can of whoop-ass, Chuck Norris jumps out. He reaches for his phone, hits speed dial, and shouts, "Mike! Help!" There is no chin behind Chuck Norris' beard. There is only another fist. It hides back there in fear of Mike Canales' firm stare.

  15. If that is directed at UNTSIG, gotta say, he ain't a hater. A cutie, maybe...but not a hater. And I honestly agree with, at least his sentiment, in regards to rushing the court. I keep reading the arguments that it was an exciting game and th students got caught up in the emotion...but what happens if the UTA game is another OT thriller? They've become a bit of a rival and always play us tight...do the students rush the court then, too? Or how about if Sam Houston came here? They may well end up better than Tech this season...storm the floor after an exciting W? It reeks of small time to storm the court after a win over what will be, at best, an 18 win 5th place Big 12 team that is hard by the channel on selection Sunday trying to will themselves into the tourney. And I believe that is UNTSIG...and many other's concern over what happened on Tuesday night. There has to come a point in the very near future where we expect to win over a team like this...and we need to become a more knowledgeable and self-aware fan base who can fully recognize both our and our opponents' place in the current college basketball landscape. This game was not over-celebratory material. All of that said...I am fully OK with a slightly embarrassing over-celebration if it brings fans back. More embarrassing than rushing the court against a slightly above average team is the fact that a team will have 100+ wins over the past five seasons struggles to average 3000 fans. If the excitement and emotion from this game will bring people back, lets celebrate like we just beat Duke.

  16. I want to say, rushing the court last night was the right move and that was why i was apart of it. I'm the guy in the Green Wig in the front row of all the games, and even though we had a huge crowd due to our "named" opponent, we ran the court last night on the emotion of the Game....The pit crew was so fired up after Josh hit those two 3's that i even told the cops lined up on the floor that their was no way they were stopping this crowd. I can personally say that even though i was happy to beat a Big 12 school i ran the court because i love my school and i love this team, and they deserved a celebration after the type of game they played. and after all the football beatings i have taken since 07 (never seen a win at fouts) this was much more special then when i ran the court in 07 vs OSU and the fact that I'm graduating in December and this was my final "BIG GAME"....plus i also hope this makes more students want to come back. Rushing the court creates memories and memories create fans, that was the best thing that UNT could have hoped for last night

  17. Thank God that quitter quit when he did. Anyone else find it strange that Dibbs still drives home to meet up with his "Buddy" almost every weekend?
    2 points
  18. Glad he is no longer a part of the program. He clearly has no passion for the game. And that story is absolutely pointless. What a quitter. He has no heart and does not belong on the field. Riley>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Gio!

  19. Aww, poor guy got tackled too many times. Look at Riley, he just keeps coming back. Gio is a vagine. I hope his intramural team wins every game, or else he'll have his dad call them up and tell them he quit.

  20. There are really too many threads on this topic at this point... we should admin them all into one super thread, but why are we all just sitting here repeating ourselves over and over and over on the subject? Not to be a killjoy, but what else can be said that hasn't already until we have some new news?

  23. It is November 2030. Joe and Sam are sitting in a bar, watching a basketball game on a big screen. Joe: Remember when we beat Tech to launch that amazing season? Sam: I'll never forget. I remember the end of OT, when all of us calmly reviewed the stats, commented incisively on the play of various players, and then, in the sober understanding that this should be considered a routine win, filed out of the coliseum in a quiet and orderly manner. I'll cherish that feeling of jaded restraint forever. Joe: Yeah, good times. Wish I had a video.

  25. I have been in attendance during this current three game road winning streak and will be in Monroe cheering the team on to hopefully another road victory. These games have been really exciting to watch and obviously the team is playing quite well. However, from a majority of the discussions on this board there is clearly more interest in who may or may not be the next head coach than what actually happened in the games. We need to have a strong showing of fans in Monroe to support the players! With the way the team has been playing I am sure you will not be disappointed.

  28. Sorry... I didn't realize job of a fan message boards was to coddle fragile little quitters. If I quit my job or left my wife I would fully expect message boards devoted to either of the two to pull no punches. As it relates to this Football team he's a sorry little quitter. Luckily we don't need him.

  29. I find it both sad and comical that grown men on a message board chastise a young man who decided to take his life in a different direction. Not one person on here knows the whole story and from what I've heard from other players he had good reason to go. Some of you fans quit on Todd Dodge , what makes you so special ? Have you ever quit a job , broke up with a girlfriend ? Does that make you a quitter too ?Sometimes things just don't work out in life. So a kid doesn't play anymore for your favorite college football team and your mad. Bottom line is you think you know what was best for someone you didn't even know. You just knew him as a quarterback... just sad. This is the past , move on

  30. a friend of mine who got a fb scholarship to NT quit in the fall practice one year after he got two of his helmets busted by a defensive lineman. Of course he was only a sophmore at the time.....but the guy who busted his helmets was Joe Greene. I never thought any less of of him for quiting the team. As for Vizza.....that was one tough kid. Was not afraid of lowering his shoulder to take on tacklers but played during a horrible two years of a rebuilding process with a load of freshmen and sophmore players. I will always remember the Navy game. I will always remember Vizza as a tough kid....not a quitter.....he has my respect.

  31. Let me remind everyone. Are we going to call every player who is no longer at another program and currently on our roster (#14 on your program for one), a quitter? Another example would be Jordan Case. He started out at Sul Ross St. and was freshman of the year in their league. He then transferred to North Texas and became (IMHO) one of the best QB's of all time at NT. How would all of you people who are quick to use the "Q" word feel if all those people in Alpine Texas, to this day, called Jordan Case a "quitter"? And finally, WHO FRIGGIN CARES IF G. VIZZA NO LONGER PLAYS FOOTBALL? geezz louise people....

  32. Honestly, I can't even understand why this is even up for debate. It was a thrilling game, and an exciting atmosphere. It is not about "oh we should expect to beat them so we should sit on our hands", it is about what went on in the game. I really doubt people would have rushed had we won in a dominating performance. People were fired up about the game the many amazing plays by josh white. I seriously can't understand why people don't get this. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN UNT FANS THIS EXCITED ABOUT AN ATHLETIC EVENT BEFORE? Be happy with that. If someone donated a billion dollars to UNT, there would be someone on this board bitching that they were a muslim, a vegetarian, or doesn't wipe their ass the proper way. (which is STANDING UP by the way)

  33. Or it could be there were only 5 posts because it's an SMU board and not a UNT board. Anytime there is a thread longer than 0 posts about SMU on this board it boggles my mind. Even this thread. Who Cares what SMU thinks of us beating Tech? I just want to hear about how miserable the Tech fans are.

  35. I'm happy with what Canales has done in his brief time as the interm coach. I believe we will beat ULM on Saturday. If we do, then I think we should name Canales as our new head coach. I don't expect to beat Kansas State, but I feel confident we won't get embarrassed. I think 3-2, with a win over MTSU, a close loss to Troy, and a respectable loss to K. St., is remarkable for 5 games with another coaches team, and base playbook. Personally, I feel this program is night and day from what it has been the last 4+ years, and under Canales it will only get better. We can see it is already getting better. Another coach could come in and win, but I think that would be a bigger risk. How long would it take that coach to evaluate his players and get them where he wants them in his new system? How long would it take him to start winning games? Will he give us a chance to win that opener in the new stadium against Houston next season? Will that coach have us challenging for the SBC Title and a bowl game next season? I think we know Canales can win, and win now.

  36. According to this site, North Texas is #19 in RPI. Looks like we should drop the Kansas game because they are #147 right now. Don't need games that will hurt our RPI. http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_Men.html

  38. Mike Canales is so great he is only way worse than Johnny Jones. Considering Johnny Jones is on a level equivalent to Jesus, this is a compliment.
    1 point
  39. I disagree. I was at the game, and sitting next to the Pit Crew. I thought the emotion of running onto the court was less about the fact that it was Texas Tech (although that was probably a factor), and more about the emotion from an absolutely incredible game last night. The team played extremely hard, and even when they fell behind refused to give up. And the OT was on a whole different level. I think the fans were just genuinely excited for the team and for JJ and the effort they gave.

  40. I'll take the spirit any day over apathy. It will be nice to get to the point where we don't do this, but it is even nicer to see enthusiasm. So, I say let the students have their celebration.
    1 point
  41. The team played their hearts out and won that game in front of a pretty packed house and great student turnout. The students and crowd sounded very spirited and I imagine the team responded to that. I gotta think it made the players feel good when the students rushed the court to celebrate with them. I think the players deserve that...

  42. And when have we been there before? Generally, we've had little success against the big conferences. We will get to the point of not doing this, but we are witnessing the rise of a program that has a lot of potential. It's exciting for students and alumni. When we've won some tournament games and start consistently knocking off big conference schools and ranked opponents, then we will act like we've been there before. But until we've been there before, enjoy the ride.

  43. That statement is true for any school not in the Big East or ACC. All we can control is our own schedule and court. If we continue upping our game like we have the past seven years, keep bringing in known/challenging opponents, promoting, and enhancing the in-game experience, there's no reason we can't fill the Pit regularly. The best game I ever saw was a triple OT game against New Orleans years ago, and I think a lot of people got that same experience last night for the first time. North Texas is turning into a basketball school.

  44. I like the idea, but then I got to thinking and remembered that the Rangers let that cheer spread organically for 2/3rds of the season before they pushed it on us. Last night taught me a lesson: let go and let the students drive the cheers and what we yell. They've got this and they should be the pulse of the crowd. This may not seem like much, but I'm a jackass who wore spandex to the tournament title game last year. I have complete faith in the student body to pull this off without AD help unless they ask for it. I don't think the AD prints the cheat sheets at most basketball schools, so why should we be different? Those kids stepped up last night and I'd love to see what a loosely organized, energetic flock of college kids are capable of before we step in.

  45. I don't feel the need to be more specific. For student spectator interest, it goes football, basketball, and in a distant third-place, baseball. Period. The first has been horrific since current seniors were freshmen in high school, the second has done well, but with limited exposure, and the third just plain doesn't exist. Even national championships in soccer, vball, golf, or tennis aren't going to garner much more than a collective, "Huh. Cool!" from the overall student body. That's why they're call non-revenue sports, or in a more politically correct world, olympic sports.

  46. rushing the court because we beat the 5th best team in the big xii south, if that, is probably overboard. it should be reserved for beating top 20 teams...at least until we are in the top 20.

  48. Very nice letter. I think it the best telling sign of how Dodge really was/is as a man is how he handled the exit. Not one snide, rude, crass remark. Simply a thank you for the opportunity. Dodge knows where his reward is and it is not on a football field. He is a class act, unfortunately not a coach that thrived at this level as a HC.

  50. Who's a better judge about class? Well, considering the letter was written by a parent of a player and supported by 67 others, I would have to say Mrs. Gill has an inside track into how Coach Dodge handled himself and the young men on the team. Thanks for providing the irony.
