  3. I blame the Canales family sock puppets for this performance. Because we've completely dominated MTSU the last 4 years, this is clearly a meaningless victory.

  10. Look...you need one of them off the bench...and I can assure you it won't be Josh. They each played about 30 minutes...and they will, barring just extremely hot nights from someone else, be on the floor to close out tight games with TT, George and whichever Shorter, Edwards, Hogans, Holmen is having the strongest game. Who starts is unimportant...it's who finishes the game that matters.

  13. Epistle #633 For SAM Coach--and no one else Depends on what your version of truth is and how you can actually verify what you call the truth, SAM Coach. Remember, "isolate and vilify" can only work so many times (even on this Roman mob'esque board) until it becomes powerless as a tool. Yelling "Fire!" in a theatre can work about one time, too, and even "crying Wolf!" till no one believes there is a wolf has been known to be ineffective, too (except to the wolf). And saying "the truth hurts; doesn't it Jimmy" makes me ask, "what the hell is this guy talking about this time?" Or...... .........are you trying one of those: "I hear you don't beat your wife as hard as you used to" type of thing in an attempt to undo someone and make them appear something they are not? Don't you feel sorry for those murderers who spend years on Death Row only to have DNA say they were innocent the whole time? Truth? You Can't Handle The Truth, SAM Coach! And those who know me best and have for decades know I don't dispense anything concerning NT except that which can sometimes be called the unadulterated blatant truth. Even made some real "un-friends" in the UNT athletic dept. in the past for telling it like it is and that from someone whose been around UNT (much longer than anyone in that dept.) yet when I get the old "isolate and vilify" routine from anyone (which I predict will soon stop at certain quarters on our campus, too); yet an old Bible verse comes back to me: "Neither cast ye your pearls before swine." Matt 6 V.7 I have been called out from the "all about Bottom 25 mediocrity" crowd on this board for having the audacity of hope & change we can all believe in by actually wanting UNT to try to do in Denton what Coach "starts with an F--ends with a Y" did now well over 30 plus years did; but "oh no, lets just keep doing what we've been doing" and you know what? We did for the last 6 or 7 HFC hires. Mark this! We will not this time! BUT...........what we've been doing all these years is now under the high powered microscope of scrutiny. I think "accountability" will soon be a new watch word on campus and very, very soon. This Rawlins guy sounds like many of ours "kind of guy" that doesn't make shoot from the hip decisions, especially those based on emotion. Dr. Rawlins was president at big time programs (well, much larger than ours at least) and that would be Washington State and Memphis (another school who passed us by long ago after our Missouri Valley Conference days with the Tigers) and word is now that UNT powers want to know "WHY" North Texas has not had any ranked varsity teams (at least the ones large numbers of fans pay tickets to see) in over 35 years. Seems now many others think UNT with a new "game changer" of a new football stadium on the way now need to start adding the concept of "ranked teams" to their new vocabulary (and not Bottom 25, either). The truth is.........there is a new era around the corner for UNT and it won't be business as usual any longer in Denton. Some won't like it, neither, because everything they do from now on will be under a much more powerful microscope. Funny thing is that is the kind of work environment of accountability most of us "civilians" have worked under most our lives.

  17. Quick Thoughts: 1) Welcome back Kendrick Hogans. Rusty in the first half, but really solid later on. 2) Tristan missed a few wide open threes that usually fall for him. I expect he will lead this team in PPG by a healthy margin. 3) Shannon Shorter still thinks he is the best player out there any time he is on the floor. Depending on the night that could be good or bad. 4) George's offensive numbers are going to dip without Tramiel, but he had some great passes to cutters. 5) The full court press looked awful when first implemented, but vastly improved as the game wore on. 6) Knox, despite the JJ hype, looks like the same player. 7) This team will be able to win games in a ton of different ways.

  20. Yes, Hayden is in his early 80's now. $600,000 (proably less) would get North Texas a proven name (with a blemish) who wants to get his career back on track (just like Fry did post-SMU firing--sorry, I had to use the Fry word again) Coach Fran was supposedly willing to take the Nevada job for $400K if it had been offered. The guys really want back in the business. June Jones already at $2 million? You think all 12,000 SMU fans think they are getting their money's worth on the small stage and small audience he plays before in University Park, Texas? What a waste of good money. Maybe they should give him another million for next year? Bowls During Fry Era At UNT? There weren't 30 something bowls back then but rather about 8 (give/take) and the Missouri Valley had no bowl tie or Fry in his first year probably would had our first bowl team since our Sun Bowl appearance in 1959. Also, Fry may not have left the Mo' Valley had it had a bowl tie. Bowls and 6 Win Minimum? Our win over a Southeast Conference Tennessee team in 1975 was a Vol football team with 6 wins that would have been bowl elgible if only there had been 30 (+/-) something bowls back then. SWC membership? Few really thought the church schools would go for it but ol' Hay' Boy sure got us a lot of statewide publicity with all that SWC business. Darrell Royal was supposed to be one of our sponsors but again, the church schools and Rice? Fry is the only UNT coach I will ever defer to as any semblance of a model to go by because who of the last 6 or 7 coaches would you use as a role model?

  22. Leavitt built USF from scratch while we of UNT watched with amazement as they catapulted from Independent status to CUSA to Big East. Has there ever been such an NCAA flight plan done in so few years? No, there has not. UNT could do a helluva' lot worse than Leavitt and I'm sure he would need a good Assistant HFC if that has not already been pissed away by a handful on this board. Jim Leavitt? You can't find anyone who took a "no culture" football program all the way to the Big East in less than 10 years. What could he do for North Texas with our strategic location, a new stadium and especially with more re-alignment chatter happening now which could open up some things for us? Problem still remains we need to get a new HFC who can salvage some of this Winter's recruiting class and then next Fall get us into some winning ways. Few schools seem to get a pass for getting in a conference w/o a need to have a winning football program and one of those happens to be a good neighbor of ours. GMG!

  23. Watching the TT/ULM game right now and I have got to say, with lots of experience listening to some small time high school football broadcasts in my day, these guys take the cake as the most retarted redneck announcers I have ever heard, and this is basketball. Every time something remotely good happens for Tech dude yells Stanford-Cal band on the field style. I was hoping they would crush ULM which would be better for us, but also happy to see our belt brothers playing well. We need all the RPI help we can get.

  26. Good point, and just think last year he was part of a staff that went to a bowl game and won. I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Canales. He went to a bowl game the last three years at a BCS school and now what does he have to look forward to after this season?

  27. Here's a newspaper report on the Leavitt incident: http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/jan/08/genshaft-leavitt-refused-admit-wrongdoing-during-m/sports-colleges-bulls/ I'd be curious to hear his version to decide whether it makes sense. My guess is Chuck Neinas will have that opportunity if he hasn't already. Edit: Wouldn't it also be interesting to hear what Canales has to say since me must have been there too?

  32. I would put Fulmer on a different level than even Leach. I just don't think we have the funds to get him AT ALL (and I'm not too sure he wants to coach anywhere else). If a rabbit came out of RV's hat and Phil Fulmer was hired, I would be on cloud 9. You wouldn't be able to wipe the smile off of my face.

  34. maybe folks just don't like basketball as much as football. that's the boat i'm in. give me a day of tailgating at a football game anyday over basketball, it's just me. it's nothing against the success of the team, but i don't care to go to many basketball games. i might make one or two a year. to me, football gameday experience > basketball gameday expericence.

  38. You know there are 2 sources working with all this happening now (1) Many times, it's GoMeanGreen.com urban tale groupies (as another alum from a big time school told me he calls theirs on his alma mater's message board) repeating things so many times over and over that they become gospel truth and whatever the subject each all but takes on a life of their own or... (2) Whatever leaks out of some real source on campus from legitimate sources. What I have heard not knowing if comes from the above #1 or #2 has said that UNT powers could come up with $600,000 for a new HFC and a million to spread among a new assistant football staff which (if true) might raise the top to bottom quality of that group's quality; although we may very well have 2 or 3 assistants now that might fit into whatever new system we end up with whoever the new HFC turns out to be.

  39. ...he would quit to become Iowa's AD. I know people love Hayden Fry, and I can understand why, because he is one of the high points of North Texas football. But why do we obssess over him? The world of college football is totally different than it was then. Yes some of his ideas, especially engaging the community are a good idea, especially from the role of AD, which is what he also was. The football coach more than anything needs to recruit, teach, adjust, win. Alexander the Great's army steamrolled most of the world, but if the US Army tried to copy him now, we would find horse calvary and the sarissa spear a little lacking. College football isn't the same, Denton isn't the same, hell, people aren't the same anymore. A new coach should be looking forward, not backwards.

  41. Meyer had engineered an incredible turnaround at Bowling Green for two years as head coach before being hired by Utah. Franchione was head coach for six years at New Mexico and led them to a bowl game before being hired by TCU. Koetter had been a coordinator for 11 seasons before being hired by Boise State. Of those four, Leavitt is the only one without strong credentials when he was hired as head coach. But he was hired for a Division I-AA independent that was just getting started. UNT needs a coach with skins on the wall; somebody who has proven they can win at the FBS level.

  42. Let me throw a few things out there. They won't stick with many of you, but I'll throw them out there just the same. There are a couple myths floating around about coach Canales. The biggest one is this one "He's beaten WKU and had a close loss...just like Dodge." WRONG!!! Dodge beat WKU, true enough. And the games were always close and always in doubt. A fortuitous fumble here, an INT there...that's what it took for him to beat WKU. Canales coached our team (our greatly depleted team) to a beating of WKU. You can argue that it wasn't a blowout until late, but it was never in question. No back and forth lead changes, no nail-biter fourth downs, no doubt. And his close win this season? Yeah, only against the reigning champion who had better athletes virtually across the board. Dodge kept us close to equal or inferior competition. Canales had a stadium (not full) of fans seriously believing that it we got the ball back (which we did) that we could win on the last drive of the game. Anyone, and I mean ANYONE, who can't see that he had a team which was otherwise left for dead playing with fire and passion is either blind, wasn't there (hi Plummy), or has an agenda. You don't have to put him at the top of your coach wish list. But please don't try to write off his accomplishments as equal to his predecessor. As to the "splash hire" movement. That might just be a great idea. Let's say we bring in a Mike Leach (or a Fran, etc). Thousands would show up to see him coach. Our stadium would be filled with the ticket buying masses. T-shirt alumni would come out of the woodwork. We'd probably get to be on national TV a time or two. And yes, he'd probably win. Then, as soon as the next big offer came along, he'd be gone. And, whoops, the fans who came to see the circus would realize the circus is no longer in Denton and they'd be gone too. Why? Do you think he'd feel the need to go to Denton Chamber of Commerce meetings, high school pep rallies, Alumni meet and greets and the like? I sure don't. Why should he? His name alone sells tickets. And do you think he'd insure that all of our newfound fans form a connection to North Texas and who we are...or do you think those people would form a connection with the hoopla surrounding Mike Leach? How would that differ from winning with an infectious, driven, coach who's trying to make his name at North Texas and might just want to make North Texas his home? When the wins came with a guy like Canales (again, it doesn't have to be Canales) don't you think that the momentum of the ship would be the shining light and not the captain himself? We talk about wanting to be like Boise. Folks that's exactly how they did it. And let me address one more thing about this splash hire idea. The more I read this board and talk to our fans the more I hear "it would make people take us seriously as a program" and "it would make the local and national media take notice." Kinda reeks of insecurity to me. Sure, if you're a nerdy high-schooler and your daddy buys you a Bentley people will "take notice" and women will probably "take seriously" the prospect of dating you. I don't want people to take my school seriously because we do the "sexy" thing. I want them to say "Wow, North Texas really committed to a culture of winning and not taking a back seat to anyone. They win with determination and preparation and that can't be taken away." If that's with a "sexy" name so be it but let's not fall so much in lust with the idea of having our name on the front of the sports page.
