Meyer had engineered an incredible turnaround at Bowling Green for two years as head coach before being hired by Utah. Franchione was head coach for six years at New Mexico and led them to a bowl game before being hired by TCU. Koetter had been a coordinator for 11 seasons before being hired by Boise State. Of those four, Leavitt is the only one without strong credentials when he was hired as head coach. But he was hired for a Division I-AA independent that was just getting started. UNT needs a coach with skins on the wall; somebody who has proven they can win at the FBS level.5 points

If JJ doesn't win this podcast by 50 he should be forced to effectively moderate the Eagle's Nest for a week.3 points

You had me up to this point. But I hate the idea that UNT shouldn't go for a big name because someday he will leave us. That reeks of insecurity. There are times in your life when you should go for somebody who is out of your league. I did, and my wife hasn't figured it out for 23 years and counting.3 points

It's unfortunate that Cobbs and Thomas were not seriously considered. They were outstanding football players, and at the end of the day, whether they played in a BcS conference or not, they should have been at the top of any list.2 points

How does beating Tech, Kansas, and LSU help Cinnamon? UNT basketball does not relate to my favorite dancer from the Spearmint Rhino at all!2 points

How exactly did Bob Stull run a program into the ground that was already run into the ground. His predecessor, Woody Widenhofer, was 12-31-1 in the four years before Stull was hired. The program had already had five consecutive losing seasons when Stull was hired. The coach before Widenhofer, Warren Power, had a .579 winning percentage (46-33-3). Widenhofer took over and led the program with a .284 winning percentage. Stull, had a .290 winning percentage. Widenhofer ran Missouri into the ground, not Stull. Stull simply couldn't revive Widenhofer's wreck. Stull had engineered two season turnarounds at both Massachusetts and UTEP. He led UTEP to the only 10-win season in their history. The Big 8 in the late 80s with Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Colorado as legitimate national powers is a different ball game than what he'd seen at UMass and UTEP. But, to blame him to the demise of Mizzou in the 80s is asinine. We know you like Jim Leavitt, but don't lie about the kind of coach Bob Stull was. He was the offensive coordinator for some of Washington's best programs, with five 10 wins seasons while he assisted there. He was also on James' staff at Kent State, where they were the last coaching staff to lead the Golden Flashes to winning seasons in three consecutive seasons; and, to the only bowl game in the school's history. While with Washington, the Huskies went to three Rose Bowl, beating Michigan and Iowa (led by Hayden Fry). They also beat Texas in a bowl game with Stull calling the shots on offense. Stull is currently UTEP's athletic director. His tenure at Missouri is the only blip on his resume, but he in no way "ran it into the ground." Bob Stull is a solid football guy and always was. He inherited a mess at Missouri. Many coaches failed during the power era of the 80s Nebraska-Oklahoma-Colorado. But, Stull sure as hell wasn't the reason Missouri was down.2 points

I hope we don't end up missing a solid replacement for Tramiel's low post game. I don't see that replacement on this roster. Edwards is not a back to the basket guy. Really wish we would have gotten another JUCO banger to fill this role. EDIT: Really, really disappointing to see Knox get position in the low post, get the ball, and then blow a bunny layup. Screamed soft. At 6'10", he has got to go up and flush that shot with authority. Not aggresive at all. Huge concerns about getting any meaningful production from him this year.2 points

Not trying to focus on you Rudy sorry I meant everyone. A name will excite the masses we need the masses to come, a name excites the recruits we need the good recruits to come, a name entices sponsors we can use all the sponsors we can get. A Canales maybe a winner but who really knows but his hiring won't bring any of the rest. I like Leavitt, I am not stuck on Leach or anyone I just want a proven head coach.2 points

I damn sure know who Solich is and all of us at Mizzou could not believe the dumbass Nebraska AD Pederson not only fired him, but the current Cobsucker coach named Pelini as well. Now how dumb is that?2 points
-
You know we used to beat Texas Tech fairly regularly until Leach took them over. And why would you care how he got the recruits here? I guess I am really missing the animosity toward name brands vs the typical up and comer that UNT always does. We have a real opportunity to do something special this time around and Chico maybe special someday but not today.2 points

But Mike is a really nice guy and he really and I mean really wants to be a Head Coach.2 points

Mike Canales deserves a shot at a head coaching job, but is UNT the right job for him? Hiring Mike would be a big gamble for UNT. Can UNT afford to make that gamble at the particular situation the program is in right now? Note: Moral victories are not victories in college football. They still go in the loss column.2 points

Be careful what you say. I made a Knox comment last year and really riled up the masses. I've had these thoughts all along about him!1 point

...he would quit to become Iowa's AD. I know people love Hayden Fry, and I can understand why, because he is one of the high points of North Texas football. But why do we obssess over him? The world of college football is totally different than it was then. Yes some of his ideas, especially engaging the community are a good idea, especially from the role of AD, which is what he also was. The football coach more than anything needs to recruit, teach, adjust, win. Alexander the Great's army steamrolled most of the world, but if the US Army tried to copy him now, we would find horse calvary and the sarissa spear a little lacking. College football isn't the same, Denton isn't the same, hell, people aren't the same anymore. A new coach should be looking forward, not backwards.1 point

We saw you win from across the way. I was the loud gal yelling at the stupid ref when he called Josh for the foul when the dude fell on top of him. (Ridiculous!) Congrats! Your kids were cracking me up.1 point

Glad they won, thought it was closer than it should have been. UAM's zone defense seemed to work, held us to settling for the 3 more often than I would have liked to see. If Shorter doesn't shoot such a high percentage we could have been looking at a different outcome. The zone d's seem to give us fits last year as well. Hope to see them play a lot sharper Friday, which I'm sure they will, as it's their last game before TT... By-the-way, anybody see who won the pizza in the first half around the 12min mark? That was me (being completely uncomfortable)!1 point

Not unless you count the warm up/track suit he was wearing.1 point

He seemed very stiff and almost uncoordinated moving around last night. There might be something to the reports/rumors.1 point

Dominique and Shorter looked really sharp and engaged. Otherwise, the team looked flat and "going through the motions." Whenever UAM would get close, the Mean Green would ratchet things up a notch and pull away only to look bored again... Also, I had forgotten how fast Dominique is... wow.. a bullet on the court.1 point

Many reference Levitt and his building job at USF when communicating their desires for our program, while others reference Boise State, TCU or Utah. Please tell me which of these schools hired a coach, with a name, that was run off from his last job to build their current program? Boise State = Koetter USF = Levitt TCU = Franchione Utah = Meyer None of the above fit this description, and only Fran was D1 HC prior to their hiring, and he really was not what I would call a "name brand.". I would also argue that TCU's sustained success has come under Patterson, who was unknown and not a popular choice at the time of his hiring. The above programs got to where they are today based upon the success of the program, community involvement and a commitment from the university.1 point

I am not sure what it matters if we get top recruits, I expect us to land recruits who would not come here otherwise. I don't see how this is a negative.1 point

I'm here. I would have been here sooner but I've been out drinking. I am glad to see this is about to be over. I've been following conference realignment and how it relates to my Bobcats since 2008. I am glad that it is coming to an end and we finally get to move up. Hopefully it is a good experience.1 point

Leach would still bring in money and I think 1-2 years on leach is pretty pessimistic. And Old Chico is pushing 50. I think not realizing that bringing in a new coach and wiping the slate clean is very important to excite the average fan is a huge mistake. Canales is an experiment at best. we deserve so much better people my god. We have no guarantee that Canales would stay any longer.1 point

Winning didn't do anything for Dickey, we need excitement now and where do you get 2 years max from, i think you mean 5 years max. We need to raise the bar past Old Chico for sure this time around.1 point

One point in his favor, he knows what the program has and lacks from seeing it first hand and not just from the outside like other candidates would be evaluating it.1 point

Good attendance tonight: 2126 This is significantly higher than the exhibition attendance the last few years... 2009: 1391 (Newman) 2008: N/A 2007: 847 (Oklahoma Panhandle State) 2006: N/A 2005: 898 (Abilene Christian) Hopefully this is a sign of good attendance to come.1 point

Who cares if they leave they bring money, sponsors and fans, and if some of the fans leave we still have the money and the recruits I am not sure to what the disconnect is. Lets jump to a mid-major and then we will have a base.1 point

The one saving grace the SBC has is Troy. The rest of the belt is pretty much inconsequential on a greater scale. I hope our new coach changes that because we can't expect the SBC to be taken seriously until at least 3-4 teams in the conference perform as well as Troy has. Also, boo-hoo to the -1s. That's the unpleasant truth about the SBC before the departures and it could be the truth if the new WAC football schools roll in hard.1 point

Because it shows UNT is serious, I have a bit of an understanding of named power. Canales will or will not get a new staff? Kind of puts him in an interesting bind huh? Say Canales does get a new staff those that would work for him are not the same that would work for a guy like Leach so no, not the same. Winning does not a lot if we just beat the Belt because not many care about FIU, WKY, FAU, Arky State, ULALA, Monroe, and Troy. It will be the Out of Conference wins that mean anything. As for the rest I will just beat my head. I can't believe people don't understand what a night and day difference in potential a named hire is compared to an existing OC. WOW1 point

No it IS NOT. I don't understand why anyone would want to go into a start up conference. Read the comments at the end of the article. That's all you need to know about the Western Athletic Conference. La Tech has to be blowing their brains out...1 point

More reason for UNT to get it's act together. I mean, the WAC isn't much better than the SBC, but I'd hate to be left behind by any of these colleges.1 point

I have no idea who we should hire, but I do know the stakes are very high for those who will hire. Hope we get the right one. On Another Front: Here is one of my favorite folks songs from the 70's when 316 Fry Street was my home for awhile and life much simpler & care-free, and no, there is no hidden message in these lyrics concerning coaches searches, either. Its just one of my favorite songs-that's all. Meanings Will Change ©1971 Yarone Music From the album "Paul and..." by Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary MUSIC NOTE: From the album that produced one of the most played or sung wedding songs to this day, ie, "The Wedding Song" (There Is Love) written by Paul Stookey. He also plays a great 12-string guitar that he calls--Noel. Music is great therapy--yes, yes. Meanings will change as you learn to grow And all that is known becomes suddenly old And that which you had to last you 'til the end Turns out to be just a passing friend And would you spend your life away Collecting great treasures So you'd be safe someday? And when you're old, and when you're gray meanings will change; life's just that way When you're finally sure You think you understand All about living and life's demands Someone will touch you and you'll see again Meanings will change; you just can't win So don't you worry 'bout your money friend Don't you worry 'bout your fame It's all a conspiracy; all part of a game And you're the conspirator; the silent enemy and you're the victim. You finally see After you get to where you have to be After you own everything you see When meanings don't change About the things you knew You might as well die, it's all over for you If you're wise and if you know What few things are real which never grow old Then take them now and make you a start With a simple life and a simple heart.1 point

Im willing to bet GreenMiner never read a word of the Leavitt investigation that was posted two weeks ago. But hey, if you keep repeating something long enough it must be true regardless if 20 others who were in the room said it didn't. We don't deserve Mike Canales, we deserve Dennis Parker! Rick1 point

sure bring in the circus. fans, media, winning then he moves on? great! canales might win, would not sell as many tickets or as much media but would leave for a better offer too. take leach and the over.1 point

If we got Leach we would be set and no he would not have to attend and beg everyone to come. People would come, sponsors would come, donors would come, recruits would come. That means big money, that means our AD would be that much more flexible hiring the next coach after a Leach. A Leach is a jump start and a Canales is a risk and a slow build at best (and I do mean everything, Fans, Recruits, Donors, Sponsors). And there is absolutely no guarantee that Canales would stay very long "IF" and that my friends is still a real big "IF" he is successful. He will have to beg recruits, he will have to put a new staff together, if he is staying with most of the old one he might as well leave now. Canales will have to build on out of conference wins to get any recognition from sponsors, big donors, and the T-Shirt alumni. I understand what a big splash can do for this program, but as of this season win, lose or draw Canales is still an experiment that has not stayed anywhere very long.1 point

Sorry, we expected nothing worse than 20-14 in the second half to make up for the first half. Your kind of thinking is what has held us back in the past, no more!1 point

That's a fair question. I talked about this already on the thread that FFR started, but I'm very impressed with the improvement we've seen under Canales and the fundamental things he's already doing (timeouts, playcalling, etc.) that Dodge never seemed to get in his 3.5 years. What I mean when I say we ought to let this thing play out and see how he finishes is that there are still 3 more games to be played. If he keeps performing at this level, then he deserves fair consideration and I already said that I'd prefer keeping him to going out after a coordinator from some other program. But if we lose out, especially if we look bad doing it... Then all this Canales family salesmanship and poo flinging towards other names that may or may not be on the table would be totally pointless anyway. If things keep up, Canales will get his due respect and all the proper consideration that quality performance would deserve. If he doesn't, then he shouldn't and won't. I'm not saying that Canales has to go out and sweep the three remaining games and beat a bowl bound K-State team. I'm saying that all the campaigning by our vocal new board members won't be worth jack if the results don't hold up. Lose out, and there's no chance he's sticking around anyway. Basically, me loathing these people shouldn't be misread as me not recognizing or appreciating what the actual coach has shown us so far. All I'm saying is let the guy make his own case. Because the friends and family are not helping his cause, at least not with me. And, obviously, not with Plumm, either.1 point

I didnt say anything about Cooach Canales, I was just stating the fact that it is unlikely that Mark would come to UNT. Unlike Canales's situation, Jimbo Fisher doesnt get involved in off the field (locker room) incidents like Canales's HC at USF. So Mark will not be in the same situation as Canales. Must this always turn into a Pro or Anti Canales board? Cant we all just get along?1 point
