  1. This doesn't even rank in the top 5 stupidass threads I've read on this site in the past hour.

  2. Well, we'll see how this goes the next five weeks. Canales will be fully in charge and we'll see how he does under very adverse circumstances. That's where you really see how well someone coaches. If this was a player going into a close and hard fought game, you'd be looking at his eyes to see if he was getting focused like a hunter, or if he was getting a deer-in-the-headlights look in his eyes. Anyway, I like the idea that a candidate is getting a five week audition. Think about it folks, it's better than giving someone a 5 YEAR audition.

  3. No, a named coach does not guarantee a successful program. But a named coach does a few great things for a program like North Texas. First a Named Coach is exponentially more likely to be successful then a coach who has never done it, second and more importantly to a program like ours is a Named Coach can create a buzz that attracts great Assistant coaches, great recruits, sponsors, donors, and could double our home game attendance. Guys like Leach and Leavitt could make SOLD OUT a common event at North Texas. I know several Texas Tech fans that have already told me they would buy tickets to see Leach coach again, but more importantly a Leach or Leavitt team would bring out a fan base that UNT has never enjoyed. These kind of guys need to be considered as an investment, they can get us to the next level and we should get a return on investment 10-15 to 1 on this kind of hire. I do believe UNT really is a Sleeping Giant.

  6. Sorry if this has already been discussed. A Federal Judge recently ruled that the National Day of Prayer is unconsitutional. Said that it might influence children to pray to God and that it did no secular good. The ACLJ is appealing the ruling. I guess the president meant it when he said we were not a Christian Nation. One way or the other.

  11. # of new season tickets which would be sold with the announcement of the hiring of Canales: ~ two dozen. (All relatives of Canales.) # of former season ticket holders who would view the hire as evidence UNT's administration is a lot more interested in saving money than having a winning football team and would therefore fail to re-up: ?

  12. Easy on that "almost 60" stuff. Sign Fran now. Hope he is so successful that a higher paying program hires him away from us. And all we're left with is a winning tradition that other head coaches are wanting to interview for.

  15. UNT hired Chuck Neinas to recommend the best coach for our vacancy. If Neinas believes, after researching our candidates, that Canales is the right person for that job, would you still have issue with it? I'm not saying that will be the case - I'm just recommending an open mind. We all seem to have our blinders: It's got to be a 'name' coach or, it's got to be a guy who's built a program, or it's got to be a guy who knows whatever. Frankly, I'd love to see Franchione here, but I will wait to pass judgment on our next coach until I've seen him coach a season. Until then, in my mind, everyone is fair game.

  18. I wouldn't call them smarties, but I was talking to an OU season ticket holder who told me I just didn't understand how college football worked if I actually though Cincinnati was in a conference that could go to a BCS bowl. I didn't realize there were only 4 auto qualifying conferences. Then he told me how the Mountain West, Sun Belt and MAC were Division II conferences. He's a season ticket hold for over a decade and watches every weekend there is not a home game and still that is his level of knowledge.

  20. What about 1 or 2 stupidass threads that go on so long you can't remember whether it's 1 thread or 5? Oh, and I'm in favor of leaving the Blakeley pic up there for a while. He can serve as an example to us that somebody can be a great coach, a great guy, and know how to have fun. Rangers fans need to remember 1 thing here: we're in the World Series, and it's ok to party.

  25. Look for the intangibles in the coming weeks. Are the players with him? Can he manage a game on both sides of the ball while still delegating the defense to DeLoach? Does the discipline increase and the penalty frequency decrease? Do the players understand their assignments the first time thus negating the deer in the headlights stare to the sideline? When difficult decisions have to be made in a short time period, how does he handle it? Does he mix up the playbook utilizing pass and run to maximum efficiency given available resources? I see significant improvement in these areas, and I'm on board. Current line is WKU -6. He meets the above criteria, and they overcome that deficit.

  26. I was just in my local On The Run store and noticed that USA Today's college basketball special edition was on the news-stand. They picked us to win the west, WKU in the east and us as champion. Tristan and George 1st team and Josh 2nd team.

  27. How can Canales win with 15 starters injured??? He's probably a good coach, but I doubt that he's Oral Roberts.

  28. That was probably the most researched sports article I've ever seen by a Daily sports writer. Many quotes from several people in different locations. "Mike Canales sat down with Riley Dodge, who will return as the teams starter this weekend against Western Kentucky." First time I've seen Riley mentioned as the for-sure starter against WKU. Not sure about HC, but I would love for Canales to stay at UNT as OC under Leavitt again.

  29. This is pretty easy. We have the most diverse and unpredictable offense since sometime in the 90's? And he has constantly adjusted to losing a starting quarterback. I don't care what anyone says, when you are down to a 4th QB and still in a game, you are a miracle worker. Canales deserves a shot if he wants it. That's one of the reason I like Leavitt, because I hope he will keep Canales. I expect an overreaction from the athletic director to his gamble by hiring someoe who has been a head coach before no matter what. So if that is the case, Leavitt and hopefully keeping Canales are a good bet. And to those saying we have to have a name in here to convince people to get on with it, who are you talking about? UNT alums, displaced UT fans, Nascar guy, Denton resident? For most all of them the only thing that would get them to games would be if we were in the Big 12. We have a base of fans now. We still get 15-20K at games and we haven't won in years. Two things are going to bring people, that new stadium, I've heard it from people who I never thought would go to games, and winning. We just need a coach that can win.

  30. I gotta say, I am not against canales as the new HC. I would love too see us roll off three wins in the next five. That would make the decision very tough! If not mike canales then leavitt and keep canales here. I think this man is the goods and young and energetic. Exactly waht we have been clamoring for here for the past several years! I don't know if we can win three more.... Or even one more. Bit let's not count out our savior from last offseason. He could be the perfect candidate!

  31. The 5 things he needs to do to win the job: 1). WIN at WKU 2) WIN at home against Troy. 3) WIN at ULM 4) WIN at MTSU 5) WIN at home against K St. Do that, and you prove you are a proven head coach at the college football level, which is what this university has to have in it's next head coach

  32. A quick search pulls ACLJ as the "American Center for Law & Justice". They are a religious rights watchdog. What's the harm with having this as a law? $0 tax dollars are spent on it. It's not a law that is enforced in any kind of way... If you don't believe in God, then don't pray. How is it different than any other normal day? And for those that do believe, they're praying for the strength of the country in which you live in. What's wrong with that? Also, I don't believe it specifies any certain religion, so there's no favoritism. If it were the "National Christian Prayer Day", or the "National Buddhist Meditation Day", then I could understand. Sadly, thousands, if not millions of dollars were spent on this useless ruling that could have been redirected elsewhere. If the "National Day of Prayer" (the Government version) gets struck down and removed, then the religious organizations of the US will probably continue it as a grassroots movement, and nothing will have changed. I think there are plenty of other issues that the courts could be tackling instead of this.

  37. Totally agree. Cuz they NEVER load up on cupcakes in the OOC, play in a conference within a light year of the SEC and dont have a bail bondsman and rotation of explanations on hand. All with the largest athletic budget in the country. Yep, UT is the very definition of doing more with less.
    1 point
  38. I agree.... One other man that was a part of that building nothing to a BCS team was Canales. He was the OC there twice, for a total of 8 years with Leavitt. He and Leavitt, together put time into those trailers everyone talks about. Of all Assistants that worked under Leavitt during his USF time was Canales has the most time of all with Leavitt at USF. I agree that having Leavitt interested in the Job is great, a BCS head conference coach conference coach is very exciting for UNT. We all should be excited, there have been rays of sunshine come out of the storm in the last few years. A new Athletic Facility and an incredible stadium. If that doesn't make you excited then I don't know what will. Some of you forget that Leavitt was not only fired for the incident, Dont be so gullible. Leavitt sent 25+ Players to the NFL, including a Lottery Pick last year. USF was always ranked high with great expectations preseason and early season.and started the first 6 games of the season winning 6-0 multiple times, Ranked in the top 25, Top 10, and even Top 3. But the last 6 games of the season went down the drain every year. They were never in the running to win the conference in the Big East at the end of the season, and always ended up in a mediocre bowl game. They were expected to win the weakest auto bid conference in BCS being in a talent infested state of Florida and never came close. USF needed to get some of that BCS $$$$$$, and never did. I am not saying that what Leavitt did with USF and putting them on the map of college football wasn't an amazing accomplishment, it was. All of you are so caught up in just that fact a BCS head coach is interested in coming to Denton and forgetting the rest of the baggage. Lets see what Canales can do in the next 5 weeks. He has dealt with a lot this year, losing 14 offensive players to Injuries. Those players were the ones that got the reps in Spring to learn the new Canales offense, not the 3rd and 4th string guys. He has had to teach these guys midweek, midseason to compete. Aside from the Army, FIU game we have competed in every game, even @ Clemson. It isnt about Wins and Losses in 2010 anymore, it is how these kids play. Do we seem the same penalties, do we see blow outs, or the kids to just give up and look to 2011 and the new stadium. Doesnt seem fair to the Seniors on the team to me. Am I a Canales fan? That is pretty obvious, I am. Do I know Canales No! Do I know people that know Canales...Yes. Those people and former players and parents of those players that say good things about Canales and I like what I hear. I am a UNT Grad like some of you, and i paid my tuition at that school just like you. Is being a Canales fan and me cheering for the guy I have heard good things about make me not a "True Mean Grean" Fan? Or not worthy to be in the cool group on these boards? We should be rallying, not dividing. Lets support these seniors... All those losses throughout their career might be covered from good memories of winning some games. What a great way to get people excited about 2011 if we can win some games this season!! Mock me as you want, Call me Ms. Canales, or Canales agent, or whatever you may. I just say lets support him, the AD, the President trust this man to drive the ship the rest of the year. That should mean something to us. Lets see what happens, if something good happens then good...if not we get a new stadium a new HC next year which is good also. Go Mean Green!!

  39. At the risk of being accused of personally attacking you... You don't have the least clue what you're babbling nonsensically about and couldn't be farther from the truth. USF has absolutely refused to settle and have refused to pay Leavitt the one month severance called for in his contract even if he is fired for cause. USF has been stonewalling, dragging their feet, withholding documents and have refused to turn over discovery until just a few days ago after the judge ordered them to do so. Their attorneys have even gone so far as to state on the record in court there are no emails regarding the alleged incident because neither school President Judy Genshaft or Athletic Director Doug Woolard use email or have computers in their offices. How credible do you really think that is?

  40. In light of what TFLF has uncovered I think that it would behoove us all to forget our passion for Jim Leavitt as head football coach at North Texas. His lawyer's persistence may forever damage Leavitt's ability to get another FBS coaching job. As long as the litigation is pending it just doesn't seem wise to go down that road. BTW, good job of researching the controversy Fake Lonnie.

  41. "In this profession, you understand that getting fired is part of the business, but you hate to see it and you hate to see it happen to good men," Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill said. "In my opinion, his teams got better and were well coached. He had a tough run with injuries. I thought he did an outstanding job at North Texas." 6-37 is not an outstanding job, Coach Stockstill. I know everyone is trying to say nice things after the dismissal, but this just borders on the absurd. Maybe Rick is already missing the automatic win that we were?

  42. Look, Canales seems like a really great coach, however right now for UNT the best choice is a coach with some proven head coaching experience. Period.I would love to see that new coach keep Canales in his current role even though that is highley unlikely. Either way I hope it works out for him. I hope he can get some wins to close the season out. It would be nice to see.

  44. And so North Texas is going to further pay consultant Chuck Neinas to hire someone already on our coaching staff? Think that one out, folks, and then truly expect Neinas to go outside Denton and Denton County to find our next HFC he will recommend to our Prez' and AD. Calling earth! Calling earth! Calling earth! North Texas alums once again doing what we (and I do mean "we") don't do well at all............ie, recommending the hiring of head football coaches that will mesh with an FBS college football program and make a difference much different that what we've had of late with our hires--like the last 3 plus decades of such hires? This is no time for another project or gamble hire. HINT: Any other year Canales really might fit the bill and fit our usual "project" HFC's hire, but that huge stadium needs a name coach to fan the flames for a very successful and "knock out" marketing program which includes selling out the rest of the luxury suites, record season ticket sales and record day of game walk up sales. I honestly hope our new name HFC will retain Canales as offensive coordinator and who knows, recruiting coordinator, too, since that seems to also be his nitch, but for the life of me, he just does not meet the other very, very important criteria much needed for this particular hire at this most unique time in our school's football history. After all, it will probably be another 60 plus years before UNT opens another new football stadium. GMG!

  45. If Canales can do the job these next few weeks and we can't/won't get Leavitt, I'd be all for hiring Canales as the next HC. He built USF with Leavitt and I'm sure would have Leavitt at his disposal for any advice.

  47. Fixed it for you. Although you are probably right about the contracts and negotiations, also. TFLF is all about Mike Canales, and he will try to discredit ANYONE who is not Mike Canales. TFLF, I think I figured it out. You attended law school classes as often as you attend UNT games, right?
