I actually like the salary structure put in place at UTEP with Mike Price. When they first hired him, his contract was very incentive-laden and much of his salary was determined by game attendance, season ticket sales, etc. I think that might be a good way for North Texas to go. We may not be able to provide the kind of cash initially to give a coach a $1M + salary, but if a coach is very confident in his abilities to turn a program around, he might be willing to go for a $500K - $750K with a sliding scale of bonuses based on incentives.4 points

Dude, what the eff? I don't know about you, but I think it's awesome that the COM is one of the best in the country, and they'd be full on retard to not promote the hell out of it. I check their events calendar about as much as I do the athletics department's. If you haven't heard the Collegium Singers you're missing out. When you have pride in your school, have pride in your school.4 points

What does this have to do with UNT Football? [between the helmet design and the M.A.S.H. joke on another thread, Ark State posters are doing a good job in the humor department this year]3 points

Are you implying that a Baylor basketball coach might attempt to obfuscate the truth and misrepresent the circumstances of a criminal act to police? Maybe I'm naive, but I don't think that would ever happen.3 points

What Flyer said. Kansas State played their fifth home game in a row last night. They have 7 homes games and 5 road games. Bill Synder has come back and gotten the Wildcats back on his scheduling terms. People criticize it, but at certain places, you have to schedule that way. Kansas State has a hard time getting home and homes from people at the FBS-level as well because they've shown they will go on the road and win (Iowa-2000, USC-2001, Cal-2003). Slip in an FCS, and give us an extra home game. RV has done a good job with future schedules, steering us away from bodybag games so that we have a fighting chance to grow. Now, we just needs the right coach, like a Kansas State has for their program, to take advantage of the future schedules.2 points

I have it on good authority that Henley is flashing "Hook 'em Horns" and saying it's because he's a Texas boy at shows in OK. If only he had seen this thread the first 46 times we posted it in the last 5 years and been enticed to come back home. Until then, I fear we lost another fan...1 point

If that were true, he wouldn't have been arrested. That is the story that she is saying now after numeorus people have told her what to say. She told hospital and police something different initially, or he wouldn't be in jail. Again, this was a warrant, which means an investigation was done and a judge signed a warrant for his arrest. If the "jumped out and scared me" story was consistent, he wouldn't have been arrested. How many times has someone jumped out and scared you? Ever broken their jaw? Complete B.S. Man, it's a good thing Scott Drew is such a good guy.1 point

Yes, there was reason not to be optimistic. It was called 2/3rds of the freaking football team. Defense and Special Teams. Last years defense was terrible, and no real impact players appeared to be on the horizon. They have only shown modest signs of improvement this year. Special teams have been consistent since the Dodge hire, consistently terrible, and have only shown modest signs of improvement this year The fact that this team has never won back to back games. The fact that we were starting the season with an unproven QB. The fact that just about every major objective season preview picked us 7th or 8th in the league. But as your second statemnt indicates, you don't appear interested in facts, rather just picking a "side". There were several of us that had concerns long before the injuries, but were just shouted down as illogical preseason optimism flowed. I get it, everyone wants hope at the beginning of a new season, but to sell hope as "there was no reason not to be that optimistic" is, well, taking a side, and not dealing with facts.1 point

Thank you Kram1. It's probably wise that I remain "anonymous" as to what and where I teach. As far as the other posts....all good points and observations. I have been concerned with Lee Jackson's agenda from the beginning. I was so disgusted how they treated GB on her exit. I can assure you that the "uppers" in power are closer to being defined as politicians more than anything. They clearly separate themselves from faculty in their daily roles as admins no matter where you go in academia. It's an ugly relationship sometimes. However, it can be a beautiful relationship with the right people invested in the institution. More often than not, the current admin is more concerned about what their "mark" will be and what will be said about it when they are gone. So true and so sad. Things like athletic program growth are no longer a priority. I continue to question the BOR's and of course LJ's investment in our school. LJ is smitten by having the name "Dallas" attached to UNT's name...just look at UTD and it's progress. Believe me, LJ has a clear path. Yes...positive gains but at a price. Time will tell. I liken him to Agamemnon from the Trojan War. He wants to see his name attached to his legacy. Speaking from my professional experience, it seems that once you go beyond the classroom and cross into the "Dark Side" (Star Wars Reference), that school leadership quickly steps into their own agenda leaving the important people out of the decision making process. The BOR and LJ do have the perceived power, but I assure you the students, faculty and alumni have more say so than they think. In essence, it is the faculty and staff who run the school. Period. We are in the trenches in the classroom. We hear from our "customers" every day...far more than school leadership does in an entire semester. So, does the BOR and LJ turn a blind eye in the midst of other dedicated and invested faculty and staff? You better believe it. Pride can be shown two ways. One is highly dangerous. The other is a pride our school deserves and a pride that every UNT stakeholder bleeds green for. We will get there...when the people that truly matter continue to stand up and have the courage to draw a line in the sand. I wager we have more people standing on our side of the line than the BOR's and LJ's "club". Thank you for reading. Go Mean Green and Go Stars1 point

I understand the tenor of your posting and largely agree with you. Perhaps the only point of contention would be that the current administration turns a deaf ear to its alumni and fans. That was so true for many years but I am beginning to notice a turnaround in the administration's stance. The administrations prior to Norval Pohl, with the exception of Jitter Nolan and to a lesser extent Joe McConnell and Carl Matthews (basketball), have all turned a blind eye and ear to athletics. Their excuse was that they were building academics and couldn't afford guns and butter. Now, academics has been vastly improved. We offer more than 200 fields of study in the three degrees offered and have and are adding more each year, often with outstanding professors. We shouldn't slight academics but at the same time athletics can do a lot to advance the perception of the university that it shouldn't be ignored. Personally I believe that Norval Pohl got it, Gretchen Bataille got it and I know that Lane Rawlins understands it. The only one that doesn't seem to get it is chancellor Lee Jackson. His thrust has been UNT Dallas and the UNT Dallas Law School (which diminishes the prestige of the flagship university in Denton). He is building his legacy to the detriment of the Denton faculty, students and alumni. Only the Board of Regents can control him and they seem reluctant to do so.1 point

Let's win at least 2 in a row before we start discussing how we should expand our not-yet-built stadium for a team that can't win more than 2 games in a season.1 point

Noone disputes this....but when a Tshirt Alumni slams someone wearing a shirt from a non "T-shirt Alumni" type school (that they actually attended) as if to degrade them or be condescending...then it is game on on the taunting of them in return.1 point

I heard a funny saying about this topic recently. It is probably common but I hadn't heard it before. If you see someone wearing an Aggie shirt, they probably went to Texas A&M. If you see someone wearing a Longhorn shirt, they probably went to Walmart.1 point

If and when the day comes where UNT football is a power and even 50K seats aren't enough, is it even possible to expand beyond that to say 70 or 80 thousand? I imagine all the old big school stadiums today weren't ever figured to expand to 80-100k capacity but they made it happen. So I wonder if technically our stadium could be expanded beyond 50k?1 point

Which seems to be exactly what is going on in this thread. I'm with you, there's nothing wrong with helping someone out who you know who's coming or whatever now and then. But to go out and encourage people who come to seek free tickets that are so rediculously dirt cheap compared to most college games these days isn't necessary. Rick1 point
-
And I got negative points for pointing out that someone would post about people who give their tickets away when they have extra or when they can't make a game...it happened...I guess some folks just "can't handle the truth". Me, I think it's great that people help other Mean Green Nation and GMG.com members who need extra tickets. Like Emmitt said, if you are just an on-going mooch, well, not so much, but you definitely know who you are and so do your friends! Giving your tickets away when you can't be there makes it certain that your seats will be used and the folks who use them may come to the next game and buy tickets or become season ticket holders. UNT needs "rears in the seats" for its games, and this assures that seats are filled. I agree that folks who just mooch all the time should be "cut off" and made to buy their own tickets, but when you can help someone out, that makes great sense to me. Anyway, let's fill Fouts for the Rice game tomorrow! Be there and let's help the Mean Green win #1 in 2010! GO MEAN GREEN!1 point

the color seems a little dark and they should have highlighted the new stadium construction under facilities but no photos. North Texas Launches New Site Courtesy: University of North Texas Release: 10/08/2010 DENTON, Texas (10/8/10) - The North Texas athletics department has launched a new "Mean Green Experience" website for the 2010-11 athletic season. The website is another resource for fans, media and prospective student-athletes to learn about Mean Green athletics from the perspective of current student-athletes and coaches. This web site is intended to replace the recruiting element of printed media guides that have been widely abandoned by collegiate athletics departments throughout the nation. In 2009-10, North Texas made the decision to go "green" and stay ahead of the advances in technology by transitioning much of the printed media guide content to online or "virtual" outlets. North Texas was one of a few select schools in the country to produce virtual guides in 2009-10. The virtual guide combined the factual information on the teams and players with multi-media features. Mean Green fans could go beyond just reading about their teams; they could now see the Mean Green teams up close and personal with interviews and behind the scenes videos. For the 2010-11 season, North Texas decided to go a step further and create its own website, specifically aimed at promoting the athletic programs and the University of North Texas. In contrast to the static virtual guides, the Experience site is alive and breathing, constantly changing with new images, videos and information. Check out the fall sports, and stay tuned for more sports to be released later in the month. Click here to view site http://meangreenexperience.com/index.php?DB_OEM_ID=18000 points

What is making fun of soccer? Oh yeah, not funny since like 1992. You are correct from what I understand. Friends of mine are big into CCL, but to me its just extra games that tire the team out during the season. I think between it and the US Open Cup, Columbus could very well be upset in the first round. Meanwhile, Philly not doing their job right now.0 points

MeanGreenTexan Storytime (ignore if you don't like heartwarming stories about the Mean Green): I grew up a UT fan my whole life. My uncle graduated from there. When I came to UNT, I must admit I fell into that trap and would wear my UT cap all the time(everyone else was doing it!!). I went to a few UNT games and was very excited about our team getting to the NO bowl in 2001 after "The Miracle in the Desert". In 2002, I went down and visited some friends in Austin and went to the UNT game there. I was going to root for UT AND UNT at the same time. Once there, I couldn't make myself wear burnt orange. I wore red. Neutral. UT was playing well and we couldn't get anything going in the first half. By the 2nd quarter, my heart was tugged and I began pulling for North Texas in my head and under my breath, trying to stay neutral on the outside. By the time we sacked Sims for the 4th or 5th time in the 3rd quarter, I was openly pulling for my alma mater and was rubbing-in the fact that Benson was going nowhere on my defense, and that Booger was going to be in Sims' nightmares that night. I got razzed a little by the longhorn students around, and my friends were shocked that I would root against UT, but mostly there was alot of, "Hey, your defense is really good..." and "Good luck the rest of the year...". Then, after the game I remember Davis saying that the UNT defense didn't deserve any credit and that they beat themselves on offense. That was all I needed to hear. My heart belonged to the Mean Green Eagles from that day forward. I still pull for the Longhorns as well, though I don't like Davis. I was going crazy when Vince ran in to seal the Rose Bowl game. I think Barnes is a brilliant b-ball coach. I don't own any Longhorns apparel, so I can't be a T-Shirt alum, but I have somewhat of an allegiance to them. I'm a FAN of Texas. I own all kinds of UNT gear. I'm an actual alumnus. I have a diploma that I'm incredibly proud of. I AM Mean Green I wish all of the other UNT alumns had the kind of experience I did. I'm glad I have you guys to share my love with. Maybe winning a few ballgames will give some students that experience.0 points

You know, if this is really true about the BOR, then it just isn't really going to happen at UNT for football. Seeing how you are the longest standing fan of this school, you probably feel like this already, but it is just so disheartening that our BOR and the Chancellor take the stance that they do and there really is nothing that can be done about it. In reality, our school will continue to grow because of its location and academics, so the chancellor and the BOR don't have to do anything on those fronts to make athletics be in better than it is. The growth is already there, in the minds of these simpletons, and they don't care if the music school only draws 500 people for a recital while UNT Football attracts 20k to the town and back on campus. Because, in their minds, we are a teachers school and a music school and football is better to be watched at UT or somewhere else. I will tell you this, its enough to make people want to just give up if the mindset continues to prevail.-1 points
-
As much as the admins try to discourage publicity for anything other than that damn music school, location will always bail out UNT. The town is just as much of a problem as the admins. Arlington fronted over $400 million to make a billionaire (Jones) richer because they could see the long term results while Denton ISD spent $30 million to try to keep UNT from having a stadium. The stadium currently under construction at UNT could have been easily shared and Collins never would have had to be built but as always Denton is in one corner and UNT in the other. The result is extra costs to the taxpayers of Denton and a hardship for fundraising at North Texas. If UNT was in Lewisville or Frisco we'd probably be in the Big 12 by now, but little "d" will always cling to its old ways until enough forward thinking people move in and throw out the old guard. Even with the recession growth north from DFW continues to speed toward Denton. Only good can come of that.-1 points
