With Drew Smith, it was obvious that we shouldn't drive under the influence. With Germain Dawson, it is also obvious that dealing/delivering drugs is dangerous/ I say this without judgement and fully in the spirit of learning from every mistake -- Josh should have been wearing a seat belt. His life would likely have been spared. I am disappointed that not once have I read how he wasn't wearing his seatbelt and how important it is and how this could have been prevented. I have a couple of friends who don't put on their seatbelt if they aren't driving over 35 miles an hour and/or going further than 5 miles from their home. Plain stupid. It is beyond ignorant -- it is selfish. I will be incredibly mad at my friends if they die in a car accident by being thrown from the vehicle. It takes 1 second to pull the belt over your lap, but takes years to get over losing a loved one. I hope that all 104 remaining players on this team learn the lesson about seat belts. Also, I hope that we can get over the negative stigma of donating organs. Young healthy adults who die in a hospital should absolutely be proud to donate their organs to save others. It is the the ultimate way to honor the life lost, to save another person. It is so rare to have a healthy person die (and you must be in the hospital to donate) and in a position to donate. Buckle up, it really is the difference between life and death.7 points

I've been reading the board for a few years and signed up a few days ago, so I thought I should introduce myself and let people know what I think of some of the major controversies/threads that have been going on here. I get the impression that I'm the UNT fan in Denia, but I don't think the true haters are as numerous as some seem to think. Most people, like most people in Denton as a whole, just don't care. I think Dodge should be fired the instant a winning season is mathematically impossible. I think we need to go get a name guy to replace him, a al Coach Fran, who I prefer to Leach. I like windmills. Just thought I should be up front about these things. --Pedro5 points

You've been lurking for years? We'll you've got a lot of pressing issues to catch up on. I'll throw a lucky 13 off the top of my head...... 1. UNT vs. North Texas? 2. Eagle Claw - How many fingers and should we care? 3. What should be on our Helmet? 4. Green jersey? White jersey? Pants? Shoes? 5. What's up with the 'tail' on the new stadium? 6. Scrappy or Eppy? 7. Kelly Green, Hunter Green, Booger Green? 8. WAC? C-USA? Build the Belt? 9. Did Fry kill the program by leaving the MVC? 10. Where's the 3-D Eagle? 11. Tired of "Fly like an Eagle"? 12. Are the band routines boring or just really complex arrangements? 13. Bring back the flying worm?4 points

Surely the sweet and genteel brotherly love that exists on GMG.com would not permit such a thing. Well, not that many years. I was in school during the bowl years (boy, did I know what year to graduate from high school, or what?) and started lurking towards the end of that time, but I will try. 1. Six of one, half dozen of the other. 2. I was trained with two fingers and thumb, but I think this is a generational issue. Similarly, my Dad hates the Redskins and is merely irritated by Philly; I hate Philly, but am merely irritated by the Redskins. 3. SOW 4. Are you gay? ARE YOU GAY! I love you. 5. We're going to host The Krispy Kreme Bowl 6. Scrappy, Eppy sounds stupid 7. I have bad eyes, I can hardly tell the difference 8. Build the Belt, but mostly build ourselves. My pipe dream about conference realignment is long and complicated. If you really want to know I can send the entire chart to you. 9. Before my time, no ability to have a rational opinion, not like that stops some. 10. No idea. 11. Never. 12. I've been in a 12-step program for ex-marching band members for a decade now. I shouldn't start talking about that. 13. It can stay on the car wash sign on Eagle Dr.3 points

Most people would reasonably agree with slight variation that football boils down to 40% offense, 40% defense, and 20% special teams. Now we can also agree that of these 40% for offense and defense that 80% of the value is starters, 20% second string. This is assuming that all positions are equal in value. We can use these numbers to calculate how many games Coach Dodge should have to win based on the total value lost of his team. So on offense we have lost: 6 First String: JJ Johnson, Nathan Tune, Conor Gilmartin-Donahue, Micah Mosley, Chris Bynes, Tyler Stradford 7 Second String: Derek Thompson, Nick Leppo, Greg Brown, James Hamilton, Breece Johnson, Riley Dodge, Benny Jones On defense we have lost: 2 First String: Dewaylon Cook, Steven Ford 3 Second String: Jesse Desoto, Chris Neal, Konockus Sashington Special Teams: Many of these players played special teams, but we can not determine accurately which of these players played. So worse case scenario none of them were of any value and we will keep the value at 20%. On to some hardcore math. So we can break down that the value of each unit(offense, defense, special teams) to be, a(.2) + b(.4) + c(.4) = 1, where 1 is a complete whole team and a = special teams, b = offense and c = defense. Now we must break up a,b and c into their respective parts. A is 1, because we ass(u)me no loss to special teams. B is broken up into .8 for starters and .2 for second string. Therefore the equation for the total amount of players lost is ((.8*(6/11) + (.2*(7/11))). This comes out to be (.44 + .13) = .57. . x = .57, the number of players lost so 1-.57, or .43 is the value of offense we have left. b = .43 players left out of 1 C is broken up into .8 for starters and .2 for second string. Therefore the equation for the total amount of players lost is ((.8*(2/11) + (.2*(3/11))). This comes out to be (.15 + .05) = .2. . x = .2, the number of players lost so 1-.2, or .8 is the value of defense we have left. c = .8 players left out of 1 So now we must apply these numbers to our master equation for the total value of the team. ( a(.2) + b(.4) + c(.4) = 1). So the new equation is, (1*.2) + (.43*.4) + (.8*.4) = Z. Z = .2 + .172 + .32 = .69 Therefore, assuming none of these players participated in special teams, and that none of the positions are valued different from each other and that the generous numbers given to second team, Coach Dodge should be responsible for winning 69% of the original 7 games expected from him which means 4.83 games, which you round down since you can't win .83 of a game. My conclusion is that 4 wins would absolutely guarantee Coach Dodge should keep his job considering the circumstances that have arisen.2 points

I can't wait until the University of North Texas has "T-Shirt Alumni". I want fans of UT, A&M, OU, et al. to make references to their hatred of "UNT douches". One day....2 points

With the right hire, this team wins 6 games next year. Anyone who was at the LaLa game knows that we had superior talent, but threw the game away with a key turnover, penalties, and another special teams blunder. Hire the right guy, and we will all enjoy at least a break even year in the first year of the new stadium.2 points

Also worthy of note: Franchione has been a head coach at 8 different stops. New Mexico and Texas A&M are the only places he didn't post a winning record in his FIRST YEAR. At those schools, he only managed to get there in YEAR TWO. Of the 8 schools, the only one where he didn't post at least one 9+ win season during his tenure was at Texas State. He was only there 2 years and he did post winning records in both.2 points

I think that Riley and Chase are about the same height. I was watching them stand next to each other during halftime of the last game. Yeah, neither of them looked 6'. Chase is a beefy kid though. BTW, I sat next to Chase's family last game. I know that one way or another, Chase will make them proud this saturday.1 point

It is directed at those that aren't immediately affected and wrought with emotion overload. Most the football team didn't know Rake, he just recently started suiting up for practice. It is still a powerful lesson, far beyond the "life is short" "live like there is no tomorrow" "better get to know god" generic talk about death. In Lewisville there is a billboard with the graphic of some HS student that killed himself driving drunk. It looks like it was put up by his family to help drive the point to the general audience how it is a critically poor decision to drive drunk. Be sure to tell your family that you are a registered organ donor. All the time surgeons are in a bad spot trying to tell a wife that her husband is an organ donor and there is a nearly violent reaction to say it isn't the case. Any how, carry on. I just thought it was important enough to talk about and get into the collective mind.1 point

Noone disputes this....but when a Tshirt Alumni slams someone wearing a shirt from a non "T-shirt Alumni" type school (that they actually attended) as if to degrade them or be condescending...then it is game on on the taunting of them in return.1 point

I heard a funny saying about this topic recently. It is probably common but I hadn't heard it before. If you see someone wearing an Aggie shirt, they probably went to Texas A&M. If you see someone wearing a Longhorn shirt, they probably went to Walmart.1 point

I want to work for the companies that convince people that four years of potential with zero production and laurels of accomplishment in a completely different environment years ago is enough to keep a six-figure job. Todd Dodge must have one hell of a personality for the reaches that people go to to justify keeping him on year after year.1 point

Didn't miss your point; did you miss mine. Corky in his second year, first in 1-aa was playing with a team largely recruited at the 1a level, therefore had an advantage. His first game was against the team he had coached Baylor and it was a close game but he won I think 2 games that year. No doubt, Corky got the team up for the big oc games and did a better job against those teams then any of his 1a predecessors. He is also the only NT coach I've seen get into a fight with a player on the side lines. While I am not as nostalgic about Nelson as some, I do believe if NT gets the right coach he can be quickly successful in the Belt. NT should and could dominate the Belt. While overall the Belt has gotten marginally better, only Troy has really elevated themselves and I think their questionable recruiting strategy should be much harder to accomplish going forward with rules on the number of players that can be signed.1 point

I think it's time for Todd Dodge, the dad, to tell Todd Dodge, the coach, to tell Riley Dodge that he is concerned for his health and not put him in harm's way the rest of the season. Good God, how many injuries do you want to put Riley through?1 point

Thank you much, Harry. I'll never understand why some of my neighbors are adamantly against any and all things UNT. How many neighborhoods out there have a Division 1 athletic complex in them? Take advantage of what you have, I say.1 point

I like Corky, but his legend grows the farther we get away from his time. You do realize that Corky first couple of years, he was playing in 1aa with a team primarily recruited at the higher classification, so he should have had a big advantage. Going down to 1aa was almost the death knell of the NT football program. I think the NT decision makers believed being one of the biggest and traditionally best teams in that classification, that NT would dominate. It never happened primarily because of much higher academic standards than the norm in the Southland. Both Nelson and Parker stated that they won almost every recruiting battle between NT and other Southland conference teams, but the problem was that NT just could not qualify most of athletes they played against. This situation was not remedied until Parker last years when the NCAA set minimum qualifying standards. Corky could get the team up for the big games, and the 1988 squad should have won the 1aa championship. That was a sophomore dominated squad that I thought was up for great things the next two years, but it did not happen. Corky overall was a below .500 coach with all but one year in 1aa, he had some great wins but he never really consistently won. It is amazing that NT has been so bad in football that Corky would be considered one of our best coaches.1 point

What in the world would be gained by naming an interim coach? All it would do is reduce your coaching staff by one, and put someone with no hc experience at all leading the team. The only rationale would be that you are auditioning one of the coaches for the future hc. Canales would be the only one that would possible be considered, but I don't see anyway that NT would want anyone associated with the Dodge experiment. I can't see any enthusiasm generated or any upward bump in recruiting generated by anyone already here Dodge is not Dickey, he is going to go out with class and give it his all to the very last game. If NT actually hires a new HC before season end, it might make some sense to name an interim to save Dodge the embarrassment and the AD the problems that would ensure if Dodge actualllly rallied the troops for some late wins. .1 point

While we are discussing numbers, what are the odds of this happening?1 point

What is this? Trigonometry or something? Go run your shady math on the Hobbit forum. Back on topic: I think it depends on what happens with coach Dodge. Does he turn it around this year? Conventional wisdom says chances are slim to none. But, there's still a chance. So, I'll hope for that, and if it doesn't happen, I'll be glad to speculate on the other options.1 point

Jim, quit thinking small. The next expansion will add at least 15,000 seats when we are invited to the Big XII. Seriously, if we can consistently fill the new stadium I would guess that we'll go ahead and expand it to 50K because if we can do that that will mean that we are having a lot of success on the field. I haven't seen any plans for the expansion but understand that it calls for filling in the horseshoe and double-decking the east side. BTW, what is the large structure between the east stands and the AC?1 point

The wings part of our stadium look like a temporary thing to me with the erector set backing on all the renderings. How many butts does the "wings" part of our new stadium even seat? Could it be taken out completely and 10K be put in its place? I see major college stadiums with endzone seating as large as sideline seating. Wonder if there is a new stadium master plan in place for expansion of stadium? I have no idea what the student side will look like since all we see is the Press Box side in most everything. I would think double-decking the student side would be out of the question because of how expensive that would be. Anyone know? GMG! PS: Thanks for the photo, FFR! And are there 4 separate corners that have present areas for expansion, Rick?1 point

Fair enough. I simply looked back at the high school recruiting thing from Rivals and saw no offers: http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Chase-Baine-45462 I do know that he worked at receiver once here until our depth at QB got thin. The overarching point is - look where we are at QB. In four recruiting classes we've had Vizza, at the time a true legitimate prospect, and Thompson, somewhat of a project with few offers. Other than that, we've got walk-ons and Riley, who never was big enough to withstand the punishment of the position at this level. This is what we have after four years of "QB Guru" head coach? I mean, something just doesn't jibe about the whole situation. You sign a quarterback every year. Not an athlete who maybe can play quarterback in a pinch. But, a legitimate quarterback. A guy like Thompson from a smaller place, who can be brought along? Fine, if you've got the depth necessary to bring him along. The problem is, we get to 2010 and our new offensive coordinator is looking around for his triggerman...and what does he really have? After this season, we'll have Thompson and Thompson alone as the only true QB on the roster. That's not right. The new head coach needs to sign at least one JUCO and one prep QB. The depth of the position was thin going into 2010. The nightmare scenarios have all played out, and now we need someone to come in here and approach it correctly. I'm sorry, but Todd Dodge did not in any way, shape, or form make the quarterback position stronger than he found it when hired. And, in fact, may have even set it back. Riley's injury just exposes the flawed recruiting and developing at the position all the more.0 points

I get it to a point, but then how many threads are on this board about people trying to bring friends from work with no association to UNT to games in hopes of turning them into fans? If those t-shirt alumni wore green, I doubt there'd be much of a problem. While I smirk at the near religious zealousness with which people follow the Longhorns, you've got to give their marketing department at least some credit for creating the brand that allows a $400 million annual budget.0 points
