Gang, First I know many of you are dissapointed about the season. I am as well. However, I have never seen anything quite like this in all my seasons following College Football. This is incredible. The biggest loss obviously the loss of life of Josh Rake. That overwhelms all the rest. But, 17 legitimate injuries. Now, Riley has a broken wrist. It's not about my dissapointment anymore. It's about the team and the Coaches who have toiled so hard since last season. One thing we know, they will not quit. They are far stronger people than this Parks and Recreation Director. I believe that is the story for me. That continued determination to fight on.... And, they will Saturday. To me, these are just way over the top of "that happens in sports". This is a group of Men and Coaches that are having to hold on to what seems like the very last strand. But, they will. And, I will applaud them for it. Sometimes being special is judged in other ways..8 points

Damn right Riley Dodge is a trooper. How many bones has he broken for our dear ol' alma mater now and just keeps coming back for more? Playing with a broken hand and all the other broken bones he's endured while at North Texas makes him something pretty special IMHO and I just hate it when people who don't know about all this put him down. Yes, it's all part of the game alright, but this kid has laid it down and on the field for the Mean Green when many others would have said, "screw it, I don't have to do this anymore." He will be one of our more successful alums in whatever venture he seeks: Hide! Watch! See! GMG4 points

What kind of story, indeed. It would be yet another chapter in what has turned out to be one of the strangest Mean Green seasons I can recall. I would love nothing better than to see this team rally around Chase as their QB and make it happen again this week as they did against FAU a couple of weeks ago. Can happen...yes, I do believe in the Mean Green. This team may not have shown me the wins as yet, but they darn sure have shown me the heart of a champion. Good luck to Chase and all the Mean Green players and coaches this week against Arkie State! GO MEAN GREEN!3 points

I could not agree with this post more. If you look at this season for what it is, it is the stuff that movies are made out of because of the pain and tribulations that everyone in this program has gone through.... Nobody can be happy with the record of our football team, but in the past couple of days I have never been more proud to wear my school letters and support our football team. Let the chips fall where they may at the end of the season, but for me, it is no longer about the wins, loses, or who the next coach might be, it is about being proud of a group of guys that have faced so much diversity this season. This team might go 1-11, but I couldnt be more proud of them if they were 11-1.3 points

Most important Fact: Coach Canales has been able to get the gets ready to compete in every game (Except Army) with 12 offensive injuries, #1,#2 QB & Center out for season. Dealing with a death on the team, and still implementing a offense gameplan to keep us competing. No matter who you are if you can still get kids to believe that they can win after all of that, you have to be a good coach. Video #1: Passion for UNT, Gets Players Excited.... Video #2: He is a teacher, he teaches, he doesnt yell. There are my reasons......2 points

We're definitely going to be behind the ACC, Big East, Big 12, SEC, Big 10, Pac 10, MWC, A-10, MVC, WAC, Horizon, WCC, C-USA and Colonial. That's 14 right there, and there really isn't any room for any reasonable argument with any of them. That still leaves the MAC and the MAAC (Siena's league). I think we'd be contenders in either league, though I wouldn't want to have to beat out Siena for an auto-bid. I think that based on last year's RPI performance, the MAC will still be ranked higher than the SBC, even though a mild homer could make a case for us this year. Last year sucked in OOC for most clubs. Our league suffered a lot of tough injuries early (Mike Smith at UALR killed their season and Desmond Yates at MTSU was out of commission through OOC play) that crippled our chance at a decent conference RPI. 90% of what will ultimately be the final conference RPI is established before Christmas break. If you've got teams missing critical players at the start of the year, if you've got squads relying on midyear transfers to get eligible, if you've got teams that suck at scheduling, if you've got a lame duck team on their way to D-III, you aren't going to come out looking very good. And we had all of those things last year. This year should be better. Potentially a lot better, though I wouldn't hold my breath... FIU is going to be a conference RPI killer because they're counting on at least 2 notable recruits that I know of off the top of my head to get eligible for 2nd semester (after OOC play). They'll drop a lot of games early and possibly get a lot better just in time to start getting some wins against SBC teams. ULM looks like they could be epically bad. Troy looks like they've got a rebuilding project on the scale of WW2 Japan in front of them. The teams expected at the bottom of the league this year could really drag us down overall, even with 5 potentially very strong teams at the top and one or two more borderline contenders after them. Anyway... To answer the question- I don't think anyone is ranking our league higher than 16th going into this year. I could see us 17th easily, I could see us 18th depending on how much they respect some of the leagues that jumped past us last year. We shouldn't be any lower than 19th.2 points

Jack is right. We come to the games for our team, our program and our school. If we want to move up and be more respected, we better start showing up on a regular basis.....in large numbers. If you can't support YOUR SCHOOL, then don't complain that (with apologies to Rodney Dangerfield) "we don't get no respect". As I said in another thread, we are not disrespected for our win/loss record, we are disrespected for our "culture"....which is the culture of apathy.2 points

I love the players' walkover before the game with the band, cheerleaders, dancers, and Scrappy. It is a great way for us to express our support. But I would like to suggest that maybe it is time a group got together after the game Saturday, win or lose, to express our support to the players and the coaches as they leave the stadium. Yes, even the coaches because they are still part of the Mean Green Family. So, is there anybody that is up for it this week?2 points

"Moglia will soon be applying for head coaching jobs. Hiring him would be a risk for athletic directors, which happen to be a very risk-averse breed. East Carolina’s AD, Terry Holland, told me that “the number one rule for all athletic directors is ‘At least win the press conference,’” and that hiring Moglia would “likely generate more questions than answers.” No thank you. Enough with the experiments.2 points

See, I look at that and think that a Mike Leach type hire is the only way out of this mess and to prevent a backslide to FCS. What message does it send to your alums when you constantly try to do a football program on the cheap, hoping and praying to win the coaching lottery by consistently paying bottom market prices for completely unproven coaches? Does that excite ANYONE on this forum?? Think about how a casual alum views these types of hires. He probably doesn't, because he probably never hears about them. If you want to stay cheap, do everyone a favor and just drop back to FCS football. Stop pretending to be something you aren't.2 points

I was very disappointed at last week's attendance. We had to get SMU's attendance counter to top 17,000. I really don't understand why there weren't well over 20K with the perfect weather and coming off of a win. Louisiana's our closest conference member and about as near a conference rival as we have; at least we've played them the most (I didn't check it out maybe we've played Arky State more). Both SMU and TCU were out of town and we shouldn't have that many Texas or OU fans that attend our games. I realize that losing's a bummer but we should've won that one and at the least our offense is more entertaining than many of those in the past. The message has been delivered that this is likely this coaching staff's swan song so we don't have to stay away to deliver that message. So, at this point, we are destroying the chances of getting a better coach or a better conference by staying away. What coach worth his salt would want to come to a school that barely meets the minimum requirement? Attendance was also a major factor in UTEP's admittance to CUSA over North Texas. They had it...we didn't. If you ever had it in your heart to attend a North Texas game now is the time. According to the Cajun Raider we are averaging just over 20,000 after the first two games. We need to hold that average as nearly and the Fouts finale with K-State should give us a good boost toward opening the new stadium. It may also get a conference's attention as well should there be an opening. There's no guarantee that it will but I can almost assure puny attendance the rest of this year will assure us that it won't. So, enjoy the tailgating and enjoy the games. If, somehow, this team catches lightning in a bottle and wins (or nearly wins) out you'll be glad that you did.1 point

Realistically anyone we hire is going to be some degree of an experiment. Sounds like a long shot, but let the guy interview. Maybe he will blow em away. Shoot, we've been pretty happy with our AD and he's just a guy who owned a few Domino's Pizzas.1 point

Great posts. This is absolutely the most bizarre set of circumstances that I've seen a football program go through with all of the injuries and the way that the injuries have occurred (even going back to Summer and the Darius Carey hand injury). I can't even get mad about losing anymore this season because so much of the team's adversity is just out of their control (injuries and the tragic death of a teammate). I still do adhere to "No Excuses" and expect our leadership to make the necessary changes based on Win/Loss records, but my expectations for this year have been completely revised. I really felt badly for the team after the ULL loss, mostly because they really did fight hard. I'm really proud of the team for continuing to prepare and play with pride. I've seen teams shutdown under much less difficult circumstances. However this strange season ends, we'll have better days ahead. Let's rally around our boys, get through this mess, and keep the bar set very high for the future.1 point

Rick, I applaud your voicing what seems to be the obvious, but that which I could not see in my self-focused state. This team of ours asks little from us...they sweat, fight, bleed, break, heal and return to fight again for little in return. No one can argue the value of a free education, but I seriously doubt that what our guys get from this is worth that alone. These are men, far better than most of us, who put themselves up to scrutiny, who give it there best whether we measure it as good enough or not. These men are in the arena...and compete admirably to the finish. We should never make too much of this, but we should willingly give back in equal measure to what they give us. If there was some way to raise a glass (or something of greater value) to these men, on the field, so that they may see that we care and admire and honor and respect....if there was, I would gladly do so. Where to begin...?? Where to end...?? What should the middle look like...?? I left McKinney yesterday honestly and completely convinced that this team was on a roll and would win this game... That conviction never left me, even after going down 14-0... Can anyone say ANOTHER first drive opponent touchdown? How about a high snap that is batted to a waiting rusher for a touchdown...?? If you're going to kick me in the nuts at least smile... And that is to say nothing of the sloppy undisciplined mess that was the team last night... Penalties, mental mistakes, organizational chaos... And yet, we kept hanging in there... Despite having to play against the Cajuns and ourselves we remained in striking distance... Even after giving up 2 ridiculously long pass plays (I knew we were going to get burned on one of those when that receiver flat out dropped one in the first quarter) we hung tough and fought... I had to leave the game at the start of the fourth quarter because my Frankenstein neck had taken a little too much without the benefit of hydrocodone, but I listened to the rest in the car and I never quit believing that we were going to win... I just sensed it... And then the extra point... A horrible feeling washed over me as I heard George and Hank prepare to make the call... Something told me that we should go against every book in football and just direct snap it to Dunbar and take our chances... A ferret took up residence in my abdomen... Blocked... After all that, blocked... A sly no-look kick to the nuggets to top off the evening... ::Sigh:: I just don't see any way Coach Dodge can remain as coach after this... I'm not at all superstitious, but this thing is cursed... And that's no joke... After the season (and no matter what happens the rest of the way) Coach Dodge needs to be profusely thanked for his service, shown the door, and one representative from every religion, great and small, needs to be given a chance to shake this curse that hangs over the program... Seriously, a new coach will do wonders... There is no way a different coach with the same talent would have these same results... No way... No way... See you guys Saturday...?? I'll be there... Wearing green... Hoping... Except now I will be looking ahead... Cheering for players and waiting for new coaches... And that wonderful new stadium...1 point

Ah, come on! - I have no reason to hope that there's anything amiss with any equipment our guys use - and I don't have any info that there's anything wrong with the shoes or any other equipment - however, the fact that there are so many instances of such a rare injury begs examination - Dustin said they're trying to figure it out - think it's logical to investigate any common variables - do you disagree? is there any reason not to look at everything that could possibly contribute? Never thought the suggestion could be even a little controversial.1 point

'90, I'm saying we can't afford a Leach type coach because history has shown that UNT Alum, as a whole, do not contribute enough to the athletic department. Not sure what the max the university can legally pay a coach ($250K?), but it's the Alum that have to make up the huge difference a Leach type of coach would require. Look at the number of Mean Green Club members we have, what, 450? Yes, the argument could be made that more members and dollars would come in if we were winning. But just like Green Dozer said, even in our four years of SBC/Bowl run, it didn't make an appreciable difference in the big donor dollars. Someone correct if they know the university can pay a football coach more than $250K, or whatever the number is.1 point

Tear out the wing, particularly because of the ugly steel support beams, and complete the bowl with concrete all the way around. Then add an upper deck on the student side, with a row of suites in between levels like Kansas State...if expansion is needed past that, we must be doing really, really well.1 point

Did you come into town and work out any of the players at the time to reach this conclusion? Please post your player evaluations. It take more than 1 or 2 studs on each side of the ball. Again, if the cupboard was so full, then why did Dickey's teams suck for two years while we all clamored for his scalp. i will agree that an experienced college coach with a college staff could have won maybe 3 belt games in the year after Dickey left. But the way you blast people, you would think we should have been in the New Orleans Bowl. You know, with size of our school, the amount of talent in DFW alone, not to mention the entire state, we should compete for the conference title year in and year out. After 4 straight ones, we should have been back two years from the last one. We weren't, so the cupboard was bare.1 point

I'm not talking about a curse that dictates wins and losses... I agree with you that poor coaching and preparation has been an albatross around the neck of this team for too long... The curse I speak of is deeper than that... It's a general malaise that hangs over the entire program that allows a team that fights tooth and nail to the last whistle to have a tying extra point blocked after pretty much routinely connecting on all previous attempts this season... A new coaching staff lifts that malaise just by their newness... What we have now is stagnant...1 point

I will never stop pulling for this team. Those young men out there scratched, clawed, and fought to get back in the game last night. I hold no ill will whatsoever toward the players. The problem is simply, they aren't being "coached up" well AT ALL. These players aren't stupid, most mental mistakes during games can be traced to lack of preparation in practice and the general sideline chaos that seems to prevail during games. I trust RV will make whatever moves that are necessary to correct the coaching problem. Until then, I support the Mean Green unconditionally. Just because I am not satisfied with the leadership provided by our coaches, I can not abandon our players and the efforts they give. GO MEAN GREEN!!!!!!1 point
