  1. Injuries are part of the game, but this is completely outside the norm. Heck, if all these players get medical shirts, we'll have one heck of a team next year given the return of all the injured players plus new recruits. I think I'd rather give Dodge one more year than to start over fresh yet again, which almost guarantee another 2-4 years of losing. Dodge appeared to have this nearly turned around early in the season until all the crazy injuries hit.

  2. My thoughts on the game and other comments: The game was a hard fought between two bad teams. Anyone criticizing Riley about his performance in the last two games, is either football ignorant or so wrapped up in "blame the Dodges" that they are blind to reality. Was I the only one that wondered why NT didn't go for two on their first td of the fourth quarter when they refused an off side penalty to take the extra point? Not necessarily because of fear of missing an extra point later on, but to make that extra point the winning score. The offensive line even with the third center should be better, I wonder how much a relatively inexperienced offensive line coach is a factor. Defensive ends are still a problem, I did like McCoy starting; but there was no pressure on the QB except on blitzes and NT paid dearly for those blitzes. Lack of defensive back depth was also evident in this game. Mason is a good QB but NT's defense made him look great. Is every team we play going to score on the first possession, I thought NT had them stopped three times only to have first downs made on penalties. Ex the final extra point, the special teams played maybe the best game in the Dodge era. Chancellor looks like the real deal. I wonder if Dodge spoke to the referees about the continued calling of offensive counts by the defense. This is usually something that is stopped when recognized. We now all see the reason that challenged plays cannot be shown at the stadium. Terrible calls by the refs. I wonder if they could really tell anything from their instant replays and didn't just reverse the call based on the big screen. Games balls to Dunbar and Dodge; Good games by Atkisson, Jackson, Robertson, Phillips and great plays by McCoy and Olawale. Overall, just too many bad mistakes to beat almost any team. T. Dodge fate was basically sealed with this loss. He certainly was not really for the job in the beginning, but I would have liked for him to have at least a fighting chance this year; but the injuries are just too much to overcome. Fans deserting the team, flogging the coaching staff, and otherwise expressing great displease with the state of NT football are certainly abundant and have more than ample justification. However, the team has had an unbelievable string of bad luck, the coaches fate is almost sealed, and change is coming. The team has not given up despite all that has occured. Based on those circumstances, why not continue to support the team and look forward to better days. I know you have heard that mantra many times, but unlike in the past there are actually some tangible reasons that things may be changing in the right direction for NT.

  5. Hold on. Dodge did not start out with a bad bunch of players. He made poor decisions with the players he had and was unwilling to alter his game plan to suit the talent that was there. True, he did not have the personnel to implement his "wide-open" offense fully at year one, but a good coach recognizes the talent that's there and works with it. Frankly, unless you're Alabama, USC, or Texas, you're a stepping stone program. When a coach is here, he cares about winning and building a winner, or he won't have a job. We all know that if Dodge had been highly successful, he would have wanted to use our program as a stepping stone to a better job as well. The trick is to build up your program until it becomes one of those coveted spots, but to do that, we have to develop a winning tradition with lots of fan/student/community support, provide excellent facilities, and get some TV air time. The AD has made major inroads towards improving support, providing excellent facilities, and getting us some air time. Now we just need that winning tradition. While I can appreciate the very difficult circumstances our team has endured this year, I don't think 4 or 5 Unsportsmanlike Conduct calls in a game is classy. To their credit, the offense didn't give up, and Canales called a good game. But as we've seen with every game in the Dodge era, there were way too many careless mistakes.

  6. There will be Mean Green Jihad if Dodge is brought back next season without the require number of wins this year. Sorry, but injuries happen in football. This was a failed hire from the start.

  7. Ya, and June Jones took SMU to a bowl game in year 2 Just amazing how some can't see that this will NEVER get better in it's current form. If not for the injuries, there would be other excuses made. Just simply amazing. Let's try and remember that the injury bug really hit the hardest AFTER the Rice game, please.

  8. I think in the short term, he would be ok. Long-term, I don't like the guy. He's a clown. And he's not that great a recruiter, either. He doesn't care about defense or special teams. His teams are undisciplined, and he has a tendency to lose his locker room frequently, which means his teams usually drop 1 or 2 games they should win easily. Frankly, I think he was only marginally more successful than Dykes, which his record shows. But, he slings the thing all over the field, and the 59-48 scores look impressive. I will grant that his name will sway some recruits in the SBC on the offensive side of the ball, but he will be gone at the first blush of success, and will have difficulty recruiting defensive players at any conference he coaches in. Again, he would be a splash hire, but long term--not what UNT should be doing, IMO.

  9. I didnt want to add this to the other Riley thread because that thing is a totally wheels off. I liked what I saw from Riley last night. There, I said it. He used his feet to keep several plays alive, when he took sacks they were ones Michael Vick couldnt have avoided, and he played his heart out. His arm strength is well documented, as are the injuries that contribute to it. Do I think the ball should have been in his hands less? Yes. Do I think that was play calling and totally out of his control? Again, yes. He did what he could with what he had. Zero turnovers. The crucial (should have been) game tying drive kept alive by his feet. A good game in my book.

  10. The drop from the Rice game to the UL game last night was almost 6,000 fans. Just estimating $10 in tickets or concessions lost per person, which is conservative, is almost $60,000 lost last night. Attendance will continue to go down the rest of the season and UNT will lose their shirt on the Kansas State game contract guarantee because no one will be there because of another hapless season. doing nothing about Dodge is costing this program serious money and it has gone on to long.

  11. How much more heartbreak can this team take? Over the last few seasons I've seen these team lose games in ways I didn't think were possible. This one is probably the worst. In a game where we show the heart, show the want, show we have what it takes to win a game. This just hurts. Bad News Bears only 10x worse. I really feel for everyone on the team. After a loss like this I wouldn't be surprised if they go 0-fer the rest of the season.

  12. Riley was great last night. My heart really goes out to him. He's been thrust into this position due to injuries and lots of bad luck. ...now he has to play for his dad's job? I can't imagine what he's feeling. I'm proud to have Riley Dodge as a part of the Mean Green Nation!

For all you've done for this school's athletics....you will always be a hero to me. From increasing school spirit, to making the football Game Day experience so fun....to THE STADIUM. And also thanks for caring so much about the "minor" sports, that we are now very successful in those sports. Happy Birthday, Rick!

  21. The reason why coaches/administrators are vague, as to why certain players leave.....is out of fear of lawsuits. In this litigious day and age, a school can easily be sued for violating a player's privacy....by releasing information, that while true, may be detrimental to the player. A famous example of this was when UT was sued by a b-ball player (Axtell)....and I think all they did was say something about his grades. (Someone may remember the details of that better than I do.)

  24. Probably not good. On top of the many issues that could potentially keep fans away, we are one of FIVE D-1A football games going on in the metroplex next weekend. TCU and SMU are at home, Baylor/Tech is at the Cotton Bowl, and Arkansas/A&M is at Jerryworld. And Game 3 of the ALDS, the Rangers' first playoff game (a home game, no less) is on Saturday night. Anyone planning on catching that game in person won't be at our game, and that will probably knock out a few of the regulars on this board. Even if we were flying high and things were going great, there would be a hell of a lot of challenges this coming weekend. Another crotch kick loss coming at the end of a frustrating game is just the turd flavored cherry on top of the shit sundae.

  27. So the sh!tty officiating is Dodge and the coaching staff's fault?!?! I think it is time to lay off the crack-pipe!!! There is a looooooong list of problems and issues with this program you can lay at the feet of the coaching staff, but pinning bad calls on them because they don't have the facilities on the sideline to "GOOGLE" the rules so they can prove their point by making the ref read an article about NCAA football rules on Wikipedia is truely insane.

  28. So, what if we go 5-2 to finish the regular season and win a bowl game? Does that count toward the 7 wins? I've been curious about this, though I don't really expect us to get into that situation.

  29. Really? You are comparing the attendance of a C-USA in-state home opener to ULaLa on TX/OU weekend? And you are blaming Dodge for the drop? Just sayin'...

  30. I'd like to start this off by saying that I'm a huge TD fan. When he was hired I was fully on baord, even at the start of this season, heck even now. I think that he does done some great things for the program. Sadly I think most of them are off the field contributions. Either way I don't want this thread to be a TD bashing thread. I just have a few questions as to what you think the best route for RV to go over the next 4 months. If you are RV at what point do you sit down with TD and say "Todd, I thank you for everything you've done. I think you're just one snakebit SOB, but we know what time it is. Good luck to you in the future." Do you do this now? After there is no way possible for TD to win 7 games? Or wait till after the season. At what point do you hire your new coach? As soon as TD is let go? First day off the off season? As soon as the season ends for all teams so you can look at all possible coaches? I think that this should be done at the point that there is not mathmatical way for TD to reach 7 wins. Put the interim title on Canales till the end of the season. While the season ends do 2 things. 1) Hope that Canales can turn the ship around and prove he has what it takes to lead the team in the future 2) Interview other prospects during that time frame. All of this in an effort to make sure that we have a coach lined up as soon as the season ends if not sooner. I don't want to see the new coach come in mid Jan and have no time to hire assistants and get the ball rolling on recruiting. Especially since there is that weird 30 day wait period that we have to hire a replacement.

  33. Guy has no class and is not the type of human being I would want representing my university. There are plenty of other quality coaches that UNT can talk with when and if that time comes that could bring the wins without the idiot personality and classless attitude that Leach would bring. Just my opinion. There are as many Tech folks extremely happy to see Leach gone as there are those that miss him...at least among my Tech friends. I prefer to see UNT build a winning program with class.

  34. If RV fires/re-assigns Dodge after the 6th loss it would allow the 30-day hiring window to start in mid-October. That would allow RV to hire a new coach in mid November if he needed to. This would allow a new coach to start the process of hiring assistants and start the process of hitting the recruiting trail much earlier then we did for Dodge's first season. It would also pump some blood into the fan base for the last half of the season and maybe put some more butts in the seats. 6 weeks can make all the difference in the world in the recruiting game.

  38. When the team is 1-3, overcoming the death of a teammate, and already losing the game? I think in that very rare situation, it would be pretty damn common. You wanted them to pop the champagne and do the fish celebration? Or do they act like they have been there before, saddle up and go do it again? OOOOOOHHHH! You want an excessive organized celebration. Maybe they should have called a timeout to chastize the players for not rallying around the player that just scored. That is what a leader would have done.

  39. Why in the hell don't we give away tickets or drastically drop the ticket prices to get buts in the seats? The cost would be made up in concession and parking costs. We need to fill the new stadium next year NO MATTER WHAT.

  45. Hey, Nostradamus had the Rangers winning 80 this year, so don't even compare my greatness to that POS. And, may I point out that the Rangers have only won 87 with 6 games left. Now, if they lose out (resting players and all) that means I would be 3 games off from my beginning of the season prediction and 4 games off from my mid-season prediction. I'll take that any day. That hairy faced F$# Nostradamus is freaking Terry Bradshaw compared to me.

  46. Harry, I'll be expecting my $10,000 check in the mail. The GoMeanGreen.com Report The Domain of GoMeanGreen.com is a website that is cool. It has lots of posters. One time, there were 251 posters on at one time! It clearly has “potential”, which is defined as “aint done nuthin yet”. My mission is to assess the website and deliver a comprehensive report that Harry and his minions can use as leverage to beat up ponyfans.com. I have observed the message board for over 3 years and have come to the conclusion that using humor or large fonts with multiple colors will gain individuals respect from others. If you’re talking trash against UNT, you’re gonna get smacked with -1’s. I have also observed the “cool kids” posters and their ability to take a useless thread to begin with and totally derail it into a fun HOF-worthy thread, only to be fumbled for over 3 months by mods before taking its rightful place in the HOF forum. It is also advantageous to one’s reputation if the poster is able to fly aircrafts and take quality pictures. I have also observed several sporting events and the reactions they receive from posters on GMG.com. My conclusion is that the posters are happy when North Texas wins any competition, and they are irate when North Texas loses any contest. The recent board upgrades are going to bring new interest and vitality to the board. My recommendations to the board are as follows: Start a baseball forum: I believe this is in the master plan of the site. Advertise on sites like Yahoo.com & Google.com, and block any links from TheBleacherReport. Register more firemen, Agean-descent, and female posters, and less Tulsa fans, fact checkers, and porn spammers. Regulate the Conference realignment threads to 1 per year. My hope is that with a better message board, we can finally put a man on the moon, find BinLaden, and extend Johnny Jones’ contract. God Bless GoMeanGreen.com Prepared by: MeanGreenTexan.
