Video of the team celebrating a sweet conference win on the road.. Everybody counted them out and they went and won. Now Remember the feeling of winning and keep that feeling.5 points

Rick, I wrote out a long ass Plumm like response, but I figured it can be summed up shortly in like 3 sentences. You're a good guy - one of the best fans we have. I wish we had tens of thousands of people that cared as much about the Mean Green as you do. But your my way or the highway tenor (about this and several other NT related subjects) is the kind of thing that pushes people away rather than embraces them. There's that saying about honey draws more than vinegar - at times you'd be well inclined to follow it.4 points

(heavy sigh) Rick, if another flag needs to be purchased please contact me for a contribution. The same goes for cannon supplies. I'll also go in on yearly tune-ups for the model-A. If there are any mechanical problems with the model-A, my local mechanic is prize winner at car shows for his restored model-A's, and I will be glad to try and get him involved with maintaining the car.4 points

--- Can you imagine what what happen at A&M if some corps member failed to do as he was expected....??? [one of my sons was in it and the other a UNT grad] They would never forget that again... There is are very few excuses for these "errors" that would hold up. Someone or people need to have their rears kicked. ---These guys would NOT be very good Boy Scouts either...BE PREPARED .... check out everything ahead of time to see that it works and can be done as expected... They acted like little irresponsable kids. These guys will likely be failures in the corporate world. They don't put up with that either. Yawl may not like Aggies but they are what they are because of high expectations... This guys need to be booted out (remove any official campus recognition).3 points

"Be seated men. Don't forget, you players don't know that I'm here. No mention of that fact is to be made in any articles. The world is not supposed to know what the hell happened to me. I'm not supposed to be coaching this team. Hell, I'm not even supposed to be here in Denton. I'm supposed to be looking for high school coaching jobs in central Texas. Let the first bastards to find out be the Goddamned Cajuns. "Some day I want to see them raise up on their piss-soaked hind legs and howl, 'Jesus Christ, it's the Goddamned Mean Green again and that son-of-a-bitch Dodge'. We want to get the hell over there. The quicker we clean up this Goddamned mess, the quicker we can take a little jaunt against the purple pissing Troy Trojans and clean out their nest in Alabama, too. Before the Goddamned Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders get all of the credit. Sure, we want to go home. We want this game over with. The quickest way to get it over with is to go get the bastards who piss on our state with their presence. The quicker they are whipped, the quicker we can go home. The shortest way home is through Denton and Troy. And when we get to the New Orleans Bowl, I am personally going to take a leak on that that paper hanging son-of-a-bitch, Vito. Just like I'd shoot a snake! "When a player is lying in a field, if he just stays there all day, a Cajun will eventually fall on him. The hell with that idea. The hell with taking it. My players don't go backwards. I don't want them to. Backwards is for mama's boys! Keep moving. And don't give the Cajuns time to regroup. We'll win this game, but we'll win it only by fighting and by showing the Cajuns that we've got more guts than they have; or ever will have. We're not going to just shoot the sons-of-bitches, we're going to rip out their living Goddamned guts and use the grease to make sausages in the parking lot at the tailgate after the game. We're going to crush those lousy Cajun bastards by the bushel-freaking-basket. "Football is a bloody, messy business. You've got to spill their blood, or they will spill yours. Rip them up the belly. Shoot the gaps. When Lafayette fans are cheering all around you and you wipe the dirt off your face and realize that instead of dirt it's the blood and guts of what once was a teammate beside you, you'll know what to do! "I don't want to hear any player saying, 'I am holding my position.' We are not holding a Goddamned thing. Let the Cajuns do that. We are advancing constantly and we are not interested in holding onto anything, except the enemy's balls. We are going to twist his balls and kick the living shit out of him all of the time. Our basic plan of operation is to advance and to keep on advancing regardless of whether we have to go over, under, or through the line of scrimmage. We are going to go through that line like crap through a goose; like shit through a tin horn! "From time to time there will be some complaints that we are pushing our team too hard. I don't give a good Goddamn about such complaints. I believe in the old and sound rule that an ounce of sweat will save a gallon of blood. The harder WE push, the more Cajuns we will crush. The more Cajuns we crush, the fewer of our players will be injured. Pushing means fewer casualties. I want you all to remember that. "There is one great thing that the Mean Green will all be able to say after this game is over and you are home once again. You may be thankful that twenty years from now when you are sitting by the fireplace with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what you did in to beat ULALA in Denton you WON'T have to cough, shift him to the other knee and say, 'Well, your Granddaddy stayed out in the parking lot and ate bratwurst at the tailgate.' No, Sir, you can look him straight in the eye and say, 'Son, your Granddaddy played for the MEAN goddamned GREEN under a Son-of a-Goddamned-Bitch named Todd Dodge!' "That is all."3 points

I'm not sure why your so concerned with the past? The past has nothing to do with the light tower not being lit after our win last Saturday, or the lack of the NT Battle Flag making an appearance at our home opener two Saturday's ago, or the condition I witnessed Boomer in prior to the Rice game, all during THIS YEAR. I love ya Emmitt, but very few really people really knew who we were. Other student groups yes, because we tried to make ourselves more known to them (especially your efforts when you were VP), but school spirit was so lacking when we were around, that the average person didn't know who we were. We got mistaken for the Wings ALL THE TIME. In my own world - folks in the RTVF department by and large didn't know who we were - and a surprising number of them were real sports fans (stereotypes be damned). Alumni in general ALWAYS say it's not the same when they were in school - that's like the first rule of being an alumn! It's quite amusing for you to beat your chest about Talons being so much worse now than it was when we were walking the campus because you and I had many conversations about how the alumni needed to get over the fact that it was different than when they were around. Sure we liked when the alums showed up here and there, but we also resented if they tried to push us around. So can you blame the membership now if they do the same thing?2 points

Yeah, I'm the one who said it dude. The loop on the lock at the time was long enough at the time that you could trist it in such a way that you could the crack open the box and slide your hand in it. A semester or two before I graduated that lock was cut by NT for some reason, and a new lock was put on the box which we had a key too. But that lock did not have nearly the size of loop to gerry-rig it open if the key was ever lost(trust me, I tried). Now the email that was posted on the forum a few days ago from Talons said another lock had been put on. Unless it was a lock with a look long such as the one in the mid to late 90's -- getting your hand undernear it would be impossible. Talons Member Fall 1996 - Summmer 20012 points

I stopped by the stadium yesterday(Damn it's fantastic to see!) and spoke with officials about stadium donations and wanted to clear up a couple of misconceptions I learned about I think that are floating around. If there are others post them here and someone can probably answer them. For one, if you are a current season ticket holder and, like I was, having concerns that for next year your going to get priced out of your seats, that simply IS NOT TRUE AT ALL. There will be a slight increase as I'm certain everyone understands due to the overall facility upgrade, but they will not be significant to the point you cannot keep your current seats. So please, if your holding out a donation because your worried about having to save up for that BIG increase next year, please donate now and get on board with this project. It does not matter how much you give, just give what you can. Second, again, it does not matter what you give. If your holding out your donation because you simply don't feel what you can give will make a difference, NOT TRUE AT ALL. Every amount counts. We have the power in numbers at North Texas. There is a bland UNT billboard on east I-30 in Fort Worth right now that simply reads(paraphrasing of course) "94,000 alumni work in the DFW metroplex". I'm hearing that number rises to over 150K when considering outside of the DFW area and around the 5 state region? If everyone of them simply gave just $100 we would be making a huge difference overall. So please give what you can. Three, if you are wanting club seats but are concerned about your seats being inside and don't want to sit inside, again NOT TRUE AT ALL. The Club seating IS outside, in the weather. But you will have access inside behind the glass. This is similar to what KajunRaider and the boys have at MTSU, only nicer. You'll have access to someone coming down and taking concession orders plus a damn nice indoor facility to retreat to whenever you want, and there are some incredibly great prices for what is included in this package. Four, if you do purchase Club seats, and when the stadium host other events such as concerts, you as a Club seat owner will have first right of refusal for that event. This is a fantastic option for what you get. I know there probably are more concerns out there and the AD dept is collecting them all for an informational FAQ that hopes to be out this Fall. If you have one share them here or give the AD dept a call and let them know. Folks, I know times are tough right now and this is asking everyone to go above and beyond what you normally do for this school. But this is the biggie for North Texas. THIS IS IT! If there ever was a time to go above and beyond, THIS IS THE TIME. Give whatever you can and get on board now. You'll feel great that you did and next year when you walk into that beautiful stadium with your family and kids/grand kids you can show them what you helped build with Mean Green pride. If you have any questions or concerns at all I suggest you get them answered by calling Cooper Jones at 940-369-8268 or 502-544-9001. Rick1 point

I didn't bring what you did in the past, you were. I'm also not saying you're wrong, simply that between '96-01 you were scarce. Starting in 2002 you mighta been alumnus of the century (I know you built the new carriage which was really well done) - I was just asking a question. Again, problems come up with this sorta junk. Did Talons drop the ball? Any one of these I can give a pass on, but all 3 together makes one ask questions, no doubt. I wouldn't deny that. I also understand their were problems at times when I was around, and I'm sure when you were too, even if you might have forgotten (as we get further away from college, things seem to have been better when we were there!). Just like when folks slam the Green Brigade, or the Frats, the Wings, the Gay and Lesbian Homecoming nominees, or whatever other group we like to run into the ground around here (because it's what GMG does BEST!)-- someone who is/was a member/concerned citizen/alumni is gonna provide a defense. And I just want to say I think UNTFive&Dime had the best reply of the whole freaking thread.1 point

I don't suppose it's occured to you that I and the Swartz' and several others have tried the touchy, feely(I'm so concerned for your feelings and will promise to tip toe around them) approach...FOR YEARS trying to get things corrected. However, as President Obama tells us on a DAILY basis, this is not about ME. I didn't start this thread nor did I mention first here that the job that the current Talon regime is responsible for is not getting done. Again, those who are outside of Talons are noticing this and here you are defending them? And as long as we have folks at the university that feels or cares about it as you do, and makes excuse after excuse for the failings of this organization as you have done here, then the problems will continue and never get corrected. Again, it doesn't matter what kind of good guy/bad guy you or I or anyone else is around here, the fact of the matter is this is a service(to the University of North Texas) organization that the university currently funds to carry out certain specific responsiblities and duties, and currently the university isn't getting it's money's worth. Before. You move to Arkansas. You check in with the Arkansas State Board of Injecting You With 3 Strains of Hepatitis. Then they go through the standard forms and requirements. This is where you have to either submit proof of cousin/farm animal intercourse or carry out an act of intercourse with cousin/farm animal in the presence of a state official and certified notary. Then you go to freshman orientation and they chop off a toe. There's other stuff in there, I'm sure the rest of the guys here can fill in the gaps. But that's the rough sequence for what we've already covered. If it were me, and I had a bright basketball future... I'd stay the hell away from the state and the university of Arkansas.1 point

Courtland can defend the Talons all he wants. They are NOT the same as they were, even in my day. It became, unfortunatley, over time a social club. A social club that actively voted to exclude their alumni from having any sort of meaningful "voice" within the organization. Now why, if you planned on being responsible and upholding the traditions (several of which I started myself with nothing more than imagination and effort) of those that came before you would you do that? Ask your average student on campus, they don't exist or aren't revered. (Cue Courtland saying that we weren't overly well known in his day either...I KNOW we were when I was around)1 point

This whole thread makes me sad. I can't understand why the breaker box would be bolted shut unless someone actively didn't want the tower lit. Why would someone do that??? Because they didn't know better or just didn't care. I have a story with the Talons and would share at some point. I have a concern with whoever the faculty sponsor for the Talons is. That should be a link to Admin, Maint etc to make sure the box is not bolted shut, supplies are ready and precious traditions are properly cared for. Some of those things can't be replaced. Why anyone would have to jimmy their way into the box to turn the lights on is beyond me anyway. Can someone tell me how the Talons are currently structured (funding, sponsor and what department) I think The Athleic Dept should be responsible however they prob don't want it but likely would be willing to have alum support. I don't want to take money away from the athletic dept but I would guess they are a few of us that would be willing to spare a couple bucks to make thing run more smoothly. The new stadium is a perfect time to revamp the Talons and I'm willing to jump in to do whatever I can. There should be some structure near or in MGV that can be lit along with the tower, both can be lit by the Mean Green player of the game remotely. A new tradition. Todd1 point

As I expected, that is a pitiful excuse! They know what is coming up in September. Damn, they have all summer long to make sure these things are ready to go for the football season, especially considering they encourage people to follow them to the tower to light it green after a win. What if there's a short, what if one of the lights are out, what if.....? But as we know, they waited until they had to go and do it before even looking at the thing. The fact of the matter is, just as it has been for years, it's not a priority to them to get things ready for the upcoming season. Hard to believe, but I've been called the night before a game to ask where they can go get powder for the Cannon on more than one occasion over the years. Ridiculous but true. You can make excuses all you want for them, but it's quite clear their responsibilities as a service and spirit organization are not a priority to them and it shows every freakin year. It's called a lack of pride and responsibility and I'm shocked that the university continues to give them what, a $10,000 check each year to operate on? If a school of this size is going to continue to rely on them to uphold what should be looked upon as an honored position to keep and uphold it's traditions and spirit then maybe the university needs to place their funding back to the way it was when I was there, making them raise their own money for their budget. Then maybe they would appreciate the responsibility they are given to uphold for this school a little better? Otherwise, someone with a better respect for the responsibilities this position requires needs to take the traditional historical items over. Rick McKinney.....NOT VERY PROUD RIGHT NOW TO BE A TALON!1 point

Not too hard to find the referenced thread Rick - but here was what the current Talons President sent out. Now, was this something that could have been avoided? Probably. But, I sure as hell didn't check that box everyday when I was in school, so if campus security had slapped on a new lock I wouldn't have known until the next time I tried to turn it on either. Now the question to me is, how long ago had this been bolted shut? I would think that if they'd been turning the light on for the soccer gals or whatnot, they would have realized this --- unless it had been done within the 48 hours or so previous to the football win.1 point
-
I didn't hear the excuse for not lighting the tower, but I bet it was less than valid? Still, he's accurate on the rest. It continues to be a difficult task of mine to have to defend this group when they treat each upcoming football season as if it's just another thing to do on a house cleaning chore list. "...and if I don't get to the laundry today, then oh well, I'll get it next week." When in fact, it is THE MOST important thing on their list and their preparation for it has been less than acceptable. Boomer, The Model A and Spirit Bell are not toys. It's time we stop treating them as such. Very frustrating! Rick1 point

Did you know that the entire state of Arkansas has outlawed dancing? Seriously. No dancing allowed. Music in general is frowned upon and potentially a misdemeanor offense. The whole state is like Footloose. Other than their annual bacchanalian ritual sacrifice (they pick the newest 6'8" black guy that's come to town to chop up and feed to their hog mascot), it's like living among the Amish up there.1 point

You know what's crazy...I had a friend, lets say his name was Dolenti Ibrum, and he was a very gifted tennis player. Went to meet with the Arkansas tennis coach about filling a potential scholarship...the Hogs offered, but told my friend, Dolenti Ibrum, that he had to sign his LOI in an odd looking room on the south side of campus...turned out that room was actually a railcar...and as soon as Dolenti stepped in they backed the engine to his car and rode the rails all the way to Dachau. I never saw my friend, Delonti Ibrum, again.1 point

Two in the boat, and one BIG fish that may very well want to swim in a school with them. If/when they make a stadium announcement about basketball season or tickets... PLEASE give a cheer. Loud as you can. If this weekend goes well and we lock up the big recruit, I'll go out on a limb and say that this will supersede the very outstanding 2007 class as the strongest class in recent history. And that's with 4 more scholarships left to give. If you see a very tall, powerful young black man wandering around with an Eagle Angel nearby... Don't talk to him. But feel free to loudly discuss with a friend (or yourself, or nobody else at all) every horrible thing you've ever heard or made up about Arkansas. The school, the state... Whatever. Go nuts with your Arkansas slander. And maybe in a few weeks, we get another huge piece of the future puzzle.1 point

Maybe somebody else should be responsible for these traditions. Heck, add a couple more cheerleaders and let them be responsible for the flag and Boomer. Ok...let's be honest here. The WAC is, and has been, completely terrible. The draw here, for anyone, is to run the tables through that weak conference and hope to bolster your won/loss record accordingly. Winning, will in turn, open the doors for everything else to come much easier. The biggest problem UTSA faces is that they are an hour away from UT, they have freaking 'UT' in their name (so they will always fight the stigma of being a side-kick to UT-Austin), and they are in a state that is dominated by pro football. They need to get the city behind them ASAP....with a crazy campus that is scattered throughout SA and truly is a commuter school, they can't possibly hope to get that mess put together without first getting the city behind them. So...they get the Alamo bowl for a home stadium and hire a national name to startup the program. Now all they need is a way into the system and against weak competition so they can win early and often. The Southland saw this coming and made rule changes to prevent UTSA from using them. Then the depleted WAC situation drops and is a dream scenario for UTSA. It presents the weakest possible football schedule, and one in which they have a chance to win a lot of games. That won't happen if they take the WAC bait of joining early and send a team of underclassmen in there in year one and two. They will lose and that would kill all the momentum they have going. See bolded text above...it's PRECISELY why the WAC has a history of bringing up programs. It's a weak conference that if an up and coming school can get their act together (see Boise--and BYU before them) can be easily dominated. Saying the Sun Belt (or the MAC for that matter) can't produce the same lightning in a bottle scenario is silly. It has everything to do with the individual institutions that made those jumps getting their stuff together and doing it....and being in a league that wasn't too difficult to win every year. The Sun Belt, the MAC, the WAC....these leagues are all interchangeable. It's the school's commitment that matters. So far, it looks like UTSA has that going for them.1 point

I'd say go watch it live...but, I've got my own hellish dilemma: A friend called yesterday and said he had an extra OU-Texas ticket. I could go watch an epic battle between two seemingly underachieving giants and watch the miscreants of both schools mix it up. That game will end sometime between 5:30 and our kickoff with Lousiana. Free OU-Texas ticket...UNT/Lousiana game...I'll try to squeeze in both. I wish this were a season when OU and Texas played at 11 a.m. instead of 2:30 in the afternoon.1 point

Keep it the same, but start demanding 1 for 1's, or at least 2fers from everyone--even the big dogs. You need to provide value for the season ticket holders, so keep scheduling CUSA/MAC type teams, as well as the KSU's and Big 10 teams that the MG has a shot at--ie: Indiana, Illinois, etc. I personally have liked the last couple of schedules that the AD has put together.1 point
