I think the top 25 didn't want Ben in there, but he was persistent and just sort of forced his way in.6 points

Poor Dodge, when he loses: he gets the lion share of the blame, but a win and it is the great coordinators. I highly doubt, Dodge has turned everything over to his assistants; but even if he has, he deserves credit for the win. Everyone involves should share in this and I hope many more victories this year including Dodge.5 points

Winning the SBC will do nothing to correct this... The ONLY thing that will correct this is getting some national profile wins and having big time winning seasons in the mix... If UNT were known as a very difficult team to handle either at home or on the road regardless of opponent, the respect would come... Not that easy to accomplish... There are some teams other than Boise St. and TCU that have that cache... Fresno St. comes to mind... Fresno St. isn't the greatest program in the world, but they have a TON of signature wins against BCS conference schools in the last 20 years... They aren't on the level of a Boise or TCU, but they are nobody's joke either... Marshall used to have a similar mystique though they are down now... Once a program establishes itself within its own conference it can go headhunting for lower BCS teams and eventually try and break through against the big boys...2 points

Dickey needed to be gone, I am glad he is gone, in all of his greatness he could not beat a D1AA FAU. I hope never to see DD again, but if I do I have some things I am still pissed about that I would like answers about.2 points

Sports talk radio is a medium of extremes... Most hosts don't have the talent or the inclination to talk about subjects that are not either clearly negative or clearly positive... If UNT were to go 6-6 this season, you wouldn't hear word one about them... Nothing... Too dull... As long as UNT's football program is struggling, then they are an easy target for jokes, and since the hosts don't really have the talent to come up with clever material they will stick with picking on the downtrodden... Bottom 10 type of stuff... On the flip side, if UNT were to go 12-0 in an upcoming season and get noticed on the national level the hosts would use that as a springboard to discuss the failings of the BCS, the bowl system, blah blah... Belle of the Ball and all that... Anyone remember how much air time or press coverage TCU got prior to Dennis Franchione...?? Try none... Not even in Ft. Worth... After the Death Penalty SMU was a total joke and was treated as such... Right now they are barely relevant and you hear very little about them... When they turn the corner and start beating the TCU's they will be media darlings... I agree that local media outlets should show some loyalty and responsibility by at the very least mentioning local teams... 105.3's ommission of a game score for the weekend is cheap and unprofessional... I never worry too much about the kind of coverage my teams get, local or not... The quality of coverage will be in direct correlation to their relevance... Right now UNT isn't relevant and is down... I beleieve the program is on the rise and soon enough there will be a load of people looking for a spot on the bandwagon...1 point

Gotta give this team a lot of respect. Like the '01 team in the 6th week of the season, this team had every reason to lay down, but instead stepped up and answered the call. Very proud of you guys for hanging in there. Rick1 point

SMU built their stadium when construction costs were significantly lower. Not sure where you got the >$100 million figure; I hope that's not accurate. Both stadiums will be very nice, but I'll give the edge to our stadium, since it will be associated with the University of North Texas.1 point

You should check again. WKU was not full 1-A until 2009. In 2008, they were still transitional, not eligible for a bowl. Neither ESPN nor Dodge's Wiki page list the 2007 or 2008 WKU wins as conference wins. According to Western Kentucky and the Sun Belt, they did not become full conference members until 2009. I don't care about comparing the two coaches beyond defending the old coach against erroneous accusations or keeping people honest about the current one when they try to compare him to his predecessor.1 point
-
I totally agree with this. And BTW, I have ALWAYS been on the NORTH TEXAS train. It's the engineers that we hire to drive it that I occasionally have problems with.1 point

Its funny how the length of time it takes for a coach to develop a team increases a year each year. Four years is more than plenty. They are all Dodge's athletes. I'm not on the Dodge train... I'm on the North Texas train. If Dodge is best for NT then so be it, if he is not then so be it. I'm starting to think he is not. I don't understand those who are 100% for Dodge this far into his career with us. The fact is, we are loosing. When the track team placed 4th in conference this year, you guys thought that was terrible. Yet we have a team that has not won more than 2 conference games a season and you're ok with the coach? Ridiculous.1 point
-
This win is great. I predicted a victory because I had a feeling the team was better than its 0-3 record. But how about we wait until Dodge has won two conference games in a row -- something he has never done -- before declaring this team is on the right track and all the doubters are wrong?1 point
-
This thread has been beat to death and I'll not take it further except to contest your last statement. The FAU win is Dodges's fourth conference win (WKU twice, ULM and FAU). The first WKU win came when they were provisional members so that doesn't count. Who cares about the coaching comparison? Both had horrible coaching records and unless Dodge either wins seven or gets a conference championship with six wins I think that he should be gone.1 point

The first recruiting class was put together on a shorter timetable than what could have been because Dodge chose to ride out his last year and state championship with Southlake. I don't blame him for it, and I don't hold the decision against him. Because I seem to recall that the class was, at the time, regarded as quite formidable. Even without the benefit of extra time (and other coaches in our league like Stockstill had even less time with their first class), Dodge did a commendable job of using his high school observations to bring in what was heralded at the time as a stellar class. Even if we're not satisfied with that class anymore, the man made a conscious choice and his own decision shouldn't be used as an excuse to somehow justify greater latitude. I'll also point out that he had a hell of a lot more time to put together the class that opened his first season as head coach than others in the conference and the region. Not naming names, out of deference to Keith7. Also, if we're making excuses for first classes... At least Dodge had a chance to actually assemble a first class before starting his head coaching tenure. Unlike Dickey, who started in March after Simon was fired, after national signing day and just a week before spring practice started. Not that I recall anyone using it as an argument in defense of his slow start back when the masses were calling for his scalp... Of course, that may be because Dickey somehow managed to post 3 wins in his first year, a winning Big West conference record that consisted of victories over Boise State, Nevada, and NMSU. Again... Despite coming in with NO recruits of his own and barely enough time to find his office (did we have offices for the coaches back in 1998?), Dickey posted as many conference wins THAT YEAR as Todd Dodge has posted in his entire career. Including Saturday's win against FAU. The stuff about inferior talent... Well, that's already been discussed to death.1 point
-
No. And its precisely BECAUSE the current coach CHOSE not to keep any of the coaches that his tenure is so far behind the eight ball still. Face it, there are no valid excuses...including and especially not blaming the bid bad Dickey ghost.1 point
-
I don't know why you keep bringing this up. PMG told us more than a week ago that we should stop comparing Dickey and Dodge and it is clear he's taking his own advice.1 point

You mean the ones that produced all conference players in tobe, drake, gilmore, robertson & santiago How many all conference players has TD had in 4 years now ?1 point

Obviously those four and five star players (please dont bring up the Julian Herron myth) are just so enamored with Dodge that they arent signing here out of respect. I just gotta know, what record would signify failure to you?1 point

We had a coach who went 20 games under .500 & got a practice field named after him. Our next coach is currently 6 - 34 and still has strong supporters and people who think he is the man to lead us in the right direction. I can't imagine what will happen if we ever get someone in here who can maintain a .500 record. Key to the city ? Mayor of Denton ? Employee of the month ?1 point

I'm amused at the people on this board that predict that we win 90% of the games we play and basically say "I told you so" when we win the few that we have. They fail to realize that they are wrong the majority of the time. Nonetheless, this win is a breath of fresh air for us all. Something finally went right for the Mean Green. Let us not be overly zealous though and keep expectations high, hoping that this is one of many more this year. Just because we squeeze this one out, Dodge should not be even close to off the hook and neither should RV... especially with such a bogus/waste of paper report that came out this week.1 point

And please leadeth us across on a pedestrian bridge, so that no 18 wheeler doth smite us causing further injuries, yea even unto death.
