I should have known this would be a bad weekend for everyone when I signed on with my laptop from the Houston airport Friday. Not just because it’s a sad thing to do with or without a two hour layover, but because it was the first taste of theWilltoWin show that would set the tone for everything I would miss. Take that, soldiers. I would get caught in his sneaky traps a couple of more times during the weekend, but luckily, he was stopped before “he did something that got him in trouble.” Let’s face it; this forum needs the crazy people just as badly as it needs its jokers, condescending blowhards, sunshine enthusiasts and liberal hippy socialists. That’s why I’m glad Will found a friend in former GreenP1 Memorial Forum all-star Jesse Martin and seemed to end the weekend on a calmer note. Still, many of our favorites laid out this weekend. Kram was off drinking ouzo and slurping hummus out of a North Texas hat balanced carefully on a hot Greek woman’s abdomen, Bob was…well, wherever it is Bob goes between outbursts, and a lot of folks seemed content to sit this one out. Who would step up in our hour of need? Who would bring us sunshine when the clouds were so gray? As kick-off time neared, Southlake’s own ToddRodge struck first, announcing that there were only 30 minutes until the big turnaround where Todge shows us all what he can do. Oddly enough, he’s been quiet since. Then, the game happened. Several folks had good trip recaps and I particularly enjoyed CBL’s attempt to show off our team to new fans. Remember taking people to games in the early aughts and they wanted to come back? Too bad those idiots were just settling for bottom 25 success. I had the joy of following the game through a bizarre mix of texts and phone play-by-play. After trying in vain to find a bar with the game in Panama City (no luck with two early SEC games going), I snuck off to a resort gym and had a nice two hour workout to deal with the stress. Except, I realized there was no stress. As much as I try to psych myself up each week, this is what I know is coming…deep down in my heart. I’ll keep pushing it down like heart burn and will join the chorus calling for an FAU win, but it will always burn when I swallow this season. I also enjoyed finding out Troy Phillips had the same basic viewing experience I did. Good thing I wasn’t counting on covering the game for my livelihood. Speaking of swallowing, I know all 3 of you who posted or PMed asking for this want to talk postgame threads. First, I can’t keep up with everything. You people are insane, and not in that funny, spunky fan base way. There are two posts I’ve found myself rereading over and over again, trying to figure out what the author meant. Greeneagle69, wrote this masterpiece. There’s a lot to digest there, but my favorite line is this: “Right now he feels kinda like and adult that is stuck in puberty.... just cant seem to grow out of his growing pains.” How…how do you know? Maybe the adult groping the pubescent boy has the inferiority complex realgrad88 lectured about. You might say, “but Quoner, that sounds like an assumption SAM Coach might post.” Well, sir, I will slap your face and make sure you understand that Sam Coach does not post assumptions. Tobi Writes had a very detailed look at how to pick up the pieces of the offense. His magic formula calls for 50 running plays and 30 pass plays per game, or 80 plays for 450 yards of offense (200 of them rushing). Well, when we held the ball for 41+ minutes against Clemson, we ran 83 plays, so that should work. In a related note, someone started a Twitter feed called Bleacherreportd that was taken down and suspended tonight. They posted an actual Bleacher Report article each day as well as fake article titles like “The top 48 reasons Tony Romo are clutche” and “The top 40 reasons Ben Rothlezburger can win MVP.” I felt bad about it and checked the main Bleacher Report page a few minutes ago. This was your front page subhead: “Niner defense is doing a great job. The holding penalty really hurt the Saints. Look for N.O. to run more no huddle or hurry up offense next time.” At the rate Tobi Writes is improving with each post; he may be running the site by Thanksgiving. Oh, and with apologies to JayDub, our own national treasure and hosemaster extraordinaire had a nice theory on why the Rodge zone read wasn’t working. He also had a good summary of Dodge frustrations and issues in another thread, but I've grown weary of searching for more links. All that said, North Texas football isn’t all about wins and losses. It’s about making old friends grovel like little school boy bitches (welcome back, buddy!), remembering that time we hired that one coach who was going to be great and shining the bark signal high into the sky until the ones we lost come home. If none of that does it for you, just saty for the free tacos. Oh, and don’t worry. If we fall this Saturday, the Cowboys play early Sunday to mitigate the blaring media spotlight on this program. Until next time, keep a good thought for Ray and pray that our now 9 day ordeal ends soon. Courage.5 points

It is head and shoulders better. I don't think the players loathe the fans. I don't hear the coach hating on the fans. I don't hear the coach hating on the school. I do see a video thanking the support from the fans. I do hear the coach talk about the facilities and how it helps with recruiting. I do hear the coach talk up the university. That is what makes it hard to see Coach Dodge shown the door. I really believe he has good character and respects his position in life and his players. It is s shame that it hasn't worked out, but I hold out a glimmer of hope (that fades each week). As a donor and supporter, it is in way better shape. Dickey wasn't tearing up the win-loss either -- but he had negativity to boot.4 points

FAU will bring the whole house after Riley and Lance all game long. Stop the play makers, and blow up the offensive plays. Blitz, Blitz, Blitz, for Riley, and a spy on Lance. I would like for the staff to take advantage of the FAU aggressive defensive schemes. Quick slants to Stradford, Carey, to use their speed for yards after catch. Zone reads, pass to flat, reverses for Dunbar. An aggressive defense can be burned time after time. I believe the staff can develop a game plan, that will create many big plays for the offense!3 points

I lost my second wife over Dickey-ball. I've hung on to a GF for three years of Dodge-ball. I'd say we are better off.3 points

We do appreciate your tone in posing the question. But at the moment, with the way the season is going, it's kind of hard for us to focus rationally on such a matter. It is the equivalent of being in the car with your buddy. The brakes go out. You're trying to figure out what to do before the car goes off a cliff, and your buddy turns to you and asks, "you think we should have gone to Malibu instead?"3 points

It amazes me at how much flack RV gets for scheduling UH at home to open the new stadium. We gripe and moan about how few in-state games we play. Not only do we get an in-state game against a very good program not named Texas, we get them at home to open up the new place. If we get rocked in our first game, it won't be the only time that will happen over the next few decades, I can assure you of that. But, if UH decides that they want to start a series with UNT because we asked them to play us in our stadium opener, then we will have "won" a much bigger deal than just the game. We need these games against other in-state schools, especially if we will never be in a conference with them. I just don't understand how beating Abilene Christian to open a new stadium will really help the situation. So, if we lose to UH the next game 72-0, that won't be as bad because we opened up our stadium with a win over a spare? Here's an even crazier thought: Let's hire someone who can actually get us ready to play a competitive game against UH in the home opener!! I know, I know, that's just ridiculous talk.3 points

I think the better question is will this program be worse off when Dodge gets the ax then it was when Dickey got the ax.2 points

What if instead of always losing football games, Dodge had a problem with pooping his pants? Let's say out of the 39 times you hung out with him, he pooped his pants 34 times. He's a great guy, funny, respectful, and loyal to the end, but always ends up pooping his pants when you're around each other. Would you continue hanging out with him? This may need its own thread.2 points

With our without Case at QB, the opener against UH is a BIG mistake. Based on what we have returning and who they have returning, we are going to get our butts kicked in our new stadium opener. We really need to find a patsy to open this thing up with....and I mean a real patsy. Why can't we schedule Abilene Christian or somewhat like that. We have in the past with good results. Most people do not give a rats a.. who we play. They want to see the new stadium and they want to see a WIN.2 points

As Green Lantern can attest based on the post game voice-mails (which I still want transcripts of, please sir) it was probably for the best that I was serving out a probationary period on this board this weekend. I felt then...and still do...that 9/18/2010 @ Army, game 39 of the Todd Dodge era, was not only the worst performance of a UNT football team under the guidance of the Southlake Con Man, but also the worst game I have seen since I came to Denton in 2001. I felt then...and I still (think) I do...that based upon this effort and performance Todd Dodge has lost this team and keeping him for even another game makes no sense. This is coming from someone who has been very patient with Dodge and supported the decision of RV to bring him back this season. A part of my frustration and embarrassment stems undoubtedly from the high expectations and anticipation I had for this game. It is very difficult to be such a passionate fan of program 1600 miles away...as such this game has been circled on my calender since it was announced...I recruited area and distant alums to make the trip...even talked a few locals with no ties beyond me to the program to make the 2 hour trip from New Haven to West Point...and to do it at 7am on a Saturday. I bought everyone's ticket, provided a full cooler of beer and cooked one hell of a breakfast. Since I moved I basically get one live UNT game a year and I did this one big. Wish the team could've done the same. The worst part of all of it...I was prepared to lose. Thats how much the bar has been lowered. I was ready to blow a 14 point lead in the 4th quarter. I was ready to be tied with 0:01 on the clock and have a 25 yard FG attempt blocked and run back for a touchdown. I think I'd even be able to find some humor in the inventive and creative way UNT would find to lose a close game. I clearly wasn't ready for that effort. And it is really demoralizing as a fan. A fan seriously contemplating his commitment and investment in the program. Of course, this is Monday...and by 7:00PM Saturday I'll more than likely be right back on my couch with a sixer of High Life fighting through a sketchy internet feed from Boca. Masochists, all. This one just really stings. But since I insist upon optimism...there was much to like about this weekend. First off, good food, good beer and good friends...two NYC alumni came up and from the parking lot both signed up for GMG accounts...whether they'll use them after this game... Met an Eskimo brother...at least twice over. I had the chance to meet Keith, UNTBill, J.J. Johnson's brother (who is a poster on here...just forgot his user name) as well as the grandparents of Connor Gilmartin-Donahue. Nice people all. Adman...thanks for the shirt...sorry we couldn't meet back up in the city later that night. For those who have never been to West Point...there is not a more beautiful campus. Anywhere. 51 days until hoops season...1 point

why would I be an SMU fan....I don't believe I have even set foot on their campus though I would like to see a game in their stadium especially with June Jones and to answer the question.....Hurley had no clue about anything other than how to keep a job for years while ridding the pine and then turning it all over to the city of dallas corruption right at the end so he could have the feather in his cap of retiring as a "chancellor" of a "system" instead of just a long term do nothing president of a university Pohl had a clue and that is why the dallas corruption machine sent him packing and I think after all his years of being behind hurley had soured him on being a president and made it hard for him to really move the university in another direction especially with royce west, slappy price, and lee jackson on his back for the ride Dr. B was much better than I ever imagined with athletics and even more so for the university.....she still was too much into the idea of starting niche programs that no one cares about and even fewer get jobs in to make UNT unique, but she was obviously something WAY more than what royce, lee, and slappy ever imagined she was and and she was not ready to be just another university administrator taking orders from the "top" which is why she is no longer in that position and UNT is looking for yet another president that royce, lee, and slappy can dictate to1 point

So, you really think the UNT administration has a clue when it comes to athletics? You SMUt fans are so cute. Thanks for stating the obvious.1 point

I think it is the fault of the strength and conditioning coordinator that Keenum tore his ACL and the backup broke his collarbone. I also think RV should be drawn and quartered for scheduling anyone but Paul Quinn College for the first game. Oh, and regarding the new stadium, the portals are too small, the north endzone looks ridiculous, the midfield logo is facing the wrong way and all of the $100.00 I find are wrinkled.1 point

I am praying for a miracle and don't want to really think about the possible change just yet. Thinking generally, I would hope we found someone with a fire in the belly and skins on the wall who would make a five-year commitment and honor it. I agree with GreenMean that the reality is, with a demonstrated turnaround, the coach would move higher on the food chain. I would just ask that he stay long enough to learn some of our names.1 point

I agree. I predict he will end up at a big program as an offensive assistant if he wants it. We'll see Dodge as a HC in the future somewhere in college. He'll be better than he is now. (I know, that shouldn't take much) I think he still has some credibility as an offensive brain. He just wasn't ready to lead a D1 program. He'll take lessons learned here and apply them somewhere. Too bad we had to suffer through the learning curve.1 point

Thoughts On Which To Ponder For All On This Forum (Especially This Thread): One guy out there wins the Publishing Clearing House $10 million prize and gives $1 million (1/10'th) to his alma mater. A widow lady with $500 in the bank gives $250 (50%) to the same school--also her alma mater. So..........who has given the most? Should the widow lady be looked down upon and not be allowed to voice her opinions on her alma mater's sports smack board because she didn't give near as much as the guy who bequeathed $1,000,000 (1/10'th of his winnings) upon his alma mater? Should she be considered as unimportant even though she actually sacrificially gave more while getting into her food, gas and utility bills monies to do so? Many of us in our lives have ridden high & many of us have had to adjust to low--I have been paying on medical bills the last several years which has strapped me financially. I want to rejoin the Mean Green Club next Fall and buy 2 season tickets if I can (although I can't come to most games due to my DJ business); but I am no less a UNT enthusiast and Mean Green fan and no one on this board or anywhere will tell me how much I need to give. At what point do some posters on this board start asking how much another has in their saving$ account? Seems to me a school like North Texas still has enough empty seats to where we need all who will come out and support it; that is, those like that guy who won the $10,000,000 sweepstakes and the Widow Lady who gave half of all she had. If that is not the feeling of most on this board, then maybe a few need to look in the mirror, count their many blessing$, hope they can hang onto their health and those many blessing$ and maybe also wonder if they would have given as much as the Widow Lady had they been in her shoes. GMG!1 point

Stebo, I know you are the defender of the "Mean Green" nickname, but we are still and will always be the Eagles. Plus, the new eagle logo is on every uniform including the current one of the football team with it located on the pants and the soles of the shoes. All RV has done is emphasize the nickname, not eliminate the mascot.1 point

No. Too far removed from the college game. Only recognizable in Aggie camps, IMO. We might as well target JoePa if we're going this route......1 point

As much as I hate NT almost constantly changing the shade of green, I really don't like the current one. I vote go back to the darker green before Dodge. I also agree with most, go with the current eagle logo on a green helmet. Not much for uniform talk but anything is better than another coach thread.1 point

So the Same ULM that whooped our butt last year worse than anyone save Bama?? That one? With Riley back at the helm I see no reason why he wouldn't throw the same 3 INTs he did last year against them. Even WKU almost beat them last year. Unless we put in Baine...I just see Riley's inevitable being taken out of the game for an injury further demoralizing our team. I really really hate saying this....but watching them play from here on out till Houston 2011 I cannot realistically expect a victory. I hope I am wrong and I do not blame Dodge for this as much as the tragic injuries the team has suffered both physically and psychologically.1 point

If he was a winner before a season of devastating injuries, maybe. But Dodge is not a winner.1 point

Needs to be a defensive minded guy who has a good reputation with Texas HS coaches. Having said that, if you go "fresh faces", I would seriously consider Bruce Chambers. Of those with proven records, I think you have to consider trying to get Franchione. The guy can coach.1 point

DickeyBall became boring and predictable. DD cursed the fanbase, facilities and later the program overall with his black jersey stunt. Although DodgeBall hasn't won the losses have usually been entertaining. Dodge is a class act and speaks well of the school and program. If he was 34-5 instead of 5-34 we'd be begging RV to match the BCS offers Dodge would get.0 points

I think with this athletic department it's the other way around - if the head coach is having health issues and losing, you fire the coach...even if he's taken to bowl games, won conference championships, etc. With Dodge, the player injuries are simply another excuse for keeping him around for another year. See the difference? The guy who has put a winning product on the field in the past gets sick, and he's out. The guy who has never fielded a winner, then has a season where many players are injured, gets to stay. This is how great programs are built. You have to completely ignore the lack of depth created by questionable recruiting, and exposed by the injuries, to really have a good understanding of why Dodge should be allowed to stay.0 points

I wouldn't use the "experience" excuse to not start Baine. He's been here for 2 years and the backup most felt comfortable with started the Army game having thrown a grand total of 10 more in game passes than Baine. If he can get the ball down the field, I say start him. Either way, he will have to get plenty of snaps Sat because Riley will not be able to take every snap for the rest of the year.0 points

Yeah I would love for Clinton to come here, because of his experience in dealing with and preventing crisis in the world. NT would score a big one with Clinton, for sure.0 points

This is what I would do. 1. I dont mind the current green...it's kinda different. 2. I would take out "North Texas" from the helmet and put our logo on there. It is a classic look that is identifiable if we stick with it and start winning! One of my favorite helmets is the UT one...just has the orange longhorn on it...classic if you ask me. 3. I would go back to our official name being the North Texas Eagles and having Mean Green as common nickname to everybody. 4. Lastly, I would get a third uniform utilizing the black jersey and the kelly green we have. I think they would look dynamite.0 points

No to any applicant without COLLEGE HEAD COACH experience. We've been down that road before (and now) with college assistants trying to learn to be a HC at our program's expense...not again!0 points

I hate to sound like a negative nelly , but it sounds like RV is counting on this new stadium to cure all of our woes. A new stadium may be attractive , but it's not going to be the sole reason a recruit wants to come here. Playing in a bowl game & playing on tv takes priority over playing in a new stadium.
