Obviously, no one can force you to attend; but the part I don't understand is why you even waste your valuable time on this board. NT football is important enough for you to spent time on the message boards and tailgating but not worth your time to go to the game. I assume you have not attended for five years because the product this year is at least equal to those teams that were bad without the disastrous injury situation. NT needs all the support it can get, so even fair weather fans are appreciated, but on a personal level; I just don't understand the mind set. You stated there is no point in attending the games, so my question is why do you attend any games? Do you only attend games that NT is predicted to win, only games with a coach you support, just what is your attendance criteria? I am not picking on you because I know that there probably more with your view than the ones that will continue to go to the games they can and fully support the program. However, I don't understand why you boycott; a team composed of players you don't blame, a school that you have some allegiance to, and games in which you may be in the parking lot. My only guess is that somehow your "refusing to give this program unconditional support" is supposed to indicate a protest against something. A protest is not logical to me, the coaching decision has effectively been made and the school athletics are at long last moving forward. There are multitudes of people who don't attend games because they don't want to watch or be affiliated with a losing team. That rationale might not be noble but it is usually a lot more truthful than most other explanations.4 points

I think the last thing we should do is run off people when our fanbase is so small to begin with.4 points

Dodge was told he had to win 7....so with the 6th loss....RV should then make the move. Reassign TD or whatever. Do that....so that the search for the new coach can begin IMMEDIATELY. I suspect our 6th loss will be 3 weeks from today. As sadly, I don't see this team winning another game. Maybe they will....but with injuries, and the overall lackluster play....I don't see it. Anyway, if we lose the next three....the search could begin on Monday October 11. And we might have a new coach in place by the end of the season. The new coach could then possibly salvage some of this recruiting season....one in which we need to sign lots of good players. And one more thing: Please UNT...spend the dough and bring in a proven guy. At this point, we don't need any more f'ing experiments. So no hotshot OC from some place...or whatever. There are lots of name coaches available.....hire one.4 points

As Green Lantern can attest based on the post game voice-mails (which I still want transcripts of, please sir) it was probably for the best that I was serving out a probationary period on this board this weekend. I felt then...and still do...that 9/18/2010 @ Army, game 39 of the Todd Dodge era, was not only the worst performance of a UNT football team under the guidance of the Southlake Con Man, but also the worst game I have seen since I came to Denton in 2001. I felt then...and I still (think) I do...that based upon this effort and performance Todd Dodge has lost this team and keeping him for even another game makes no sense. This is coming from someone who has been very patient with Dodge and supported the decision of RV to bring him back this season. A part of my frustration and embarrassment stems undoubtedly from the high expectations and anticipation I had for this game. It is very difficult to be such a passionate fan of program 1600 miles away...as such this game has been circled on my calender since it was announced...I recruited area and distant alums to make the trip...even talked a few locals with no ties beyond me to the program to make the 2 hour trip from New Haven to West Point...and to do it at 7am on a Saturday. I bought everyone's ticket, provided a full cooler of beer and cooked one hell of a breakfast. Since I moved I basically get one live UNT game a year and I did this one big. Wish the team could've done the same. The worst part of all of it...I was prepared to lose. Thats how much the bar has been lowered. I was ready to blow a 14 point lead in the 4th quarter. I was ready to be tied with 0:01 on the clock and have a 25 yard FG attempt blocked and run back for a touchdown. I think I'd even be able to find some humor in the inventive and creative way UNT would find to lose a close game. I clearly wasn't ready for that effort. And it is really demoralizing as a fan. A fan seriously contemplating his commitment and investment in the program. Of course, this is Monday...and by 7:00PM Saturday I'll more than likely be right back on my couch with a sixer of High Life fighting through a sketchy internet feed from Boca. Masochists, all. This one just really stings. But since I insist upon optimism...there was much to like about this weekend. First off, good food, good beer and good friends...two NYC alumni came up and from the parking lot both signed up for GMG accounts...whether they'll use them after this game... Met an Eskimo brother...at least twice over. I had the chance to meet Keith, UNTBill, J.J. Johnson's brother (who is a poster on here...just forgot his user name) as well as the grandparents of Connor Gilmartin-Donahue. Nice people all. Adman...thanks for the shirt...sorry we couldn't meet back up in the city later that night. For those who have never been to West Point...there is not a more beautiful campus. Anywhere. 51 days until hoops season...3 points

I'd agree if we hadn't already seen 3 years of guys playing limited, absurd minutes and then getting little or no use thereafter. Several of those burned shirts played against Clemson and haven't seen the field since, injuries be damned. Doesn't make any sense to me. In 4 or 5 plays, did we SUDDENLY realize that someone wasn't ready and they oughtn't play again this year? And, if so, why didn't we realize that after spring and fall camp? Abbe played against Clemson, hasn't seen any activity since. Boutwell played against Rice, but not against Clemson or Army. Teegarden, a 177 pound true freshman QB recruit, played against Clemson and hasn't played again since. Drew Miller, a true freshman and one of SIX tight ends on the roster, played against Army and Army only. Redshirt freshman Austin Fitzpatrick didn't see the field yesterday. Neither did Junior TE Jamie Olawale. NO tight ends caught ANY passes. None have caught any passes ALL YEAR. We've only even thrown to a tight end TWICE in THREE GAMES. They only go in there to block! Did we absolutely HAVE to burn that potential redshirt? Would it have killed us to let one of those other, older, bigger, more experienced tight ends go in and block instead? Byrd may be able to contribute this year... But is his contribution going to overshadow Lance Dunbar? And James Hamilton? And if he's so explosive we ABSOLUTELY MUST USE HIM RIGHT NOW NOW NOW, why does he have only two carries? And none in the past two games, when our offense has struggled and looked out of sorts? We can't find enough carries for our most explosive, dangerous weapon (or his explosive, dangerous backup), but we've absolutely got to have Byrd use up a year of eligibility on special teams? And not as a returner, where he might actually be able to use his speed and elusiveness to improve our field position or score points? I don't think Dodge would burn redshirts as a "middle finger" to the fans. I think he'd do it because he's proven to be completely inept at utilizing the potential 5th year to develop a bigger, better, more trained talent pool. We keep throwing guys out there, year after year, to do basically NOTHING and forego a possible year of actual contributions somewhere down the line. If the last coach followed the same philosophy Dodge does regarding giving underutilized players a year to learn and grow and develop, we would have started this season without our starting QB, half our offensive line, and our best defensive player. Anyone who is enjoying Craig Robertson's work on defense this year should stop to consider that under the current philosophy, Robertson would have graduated last year. Because he would have played a handful of snaps on special teams in the 3rd and 6th game of his true freshman year, and not seen the field at all otherwise. If he's fired, he needs to be gone and we need to do as much damage control as we can on saving the future eligibility of as many of our athletes as possible. Once the year is written off as lost, we play with the roster we have and try to secure the best possible future we can for the years to come.3 points

I give what I can. I am not a wealthy man and I have kids that need it more right now. Is it really any of your business? Does the fact that you give large amounts of money give you more of a voice? Does the size of your donation give you the size of your voice in the program? I hope not. Are you giving so that you can have a "winner"? Or, are you giving to support scholarships of student athletes? If I had BIG money, I would have a tough time getting my money involved with college athletics today because it is so dominated by people who have the attitude that apparently you share.3 points

I feel for Riley - He's been thrown in an impossible situation here. Succeed where you've been unable to succeed to date and now do it with less physical ability or your dad loses his job. The mental pressure this must be putting on him is a bigger reason than his ability or athletic strenghts and weaknesses are for getting him out of the situation if possible. However, I don't think we really have an option right this second. Hopefully given this set of weapons, Coach Canales who so many here think so much of, can work the offence around this player and this set of circumstances to give us a fighting chance. My heart goes out to Riley. He's in a tough spot.2 points

I remember that one of the first things that Hayden Fry did was to have a town hall-type meeting and invited everyone to attend...including students faculty, and employees of the school. Basically he said that it was his assessment that the student body and the University in general had an inferiority complex regarding our image, both as an institution of higher learning and our athletic programs. He said that it was his assessment that North Texas was a GREAT UNIVERSITY (Adler would have loved that) and that we had nothing to feel inferior about. He pledged that he would see to it that the athletic programs matched the academic excellence at North Texas. He never talked about levels of giving, he just wanted everyone to show up and be proud of the Mean Green. I've never seen anything like that gathering again. It was the beginning of a culture change at North Texas. Had he stayed, the culture change would have been complete. And by the way, his assessment was right on. We've never been this understood by a head coach, or an AD, since he left.2 points

Yes, a "business" of educating young men for life. Having a coach who will pull the team together (as Dodge will) after losing two QBs in as many games and facing that adversity together, will help them later in life. We always grow more from our losses that our victories. Dodge is man enough to understand that for them and to help give that understanding to them. That is what I mean when he is a class-act.2 points

Too funny. That's good, I have to admit that. Let me see if I can say it the way I feel it when I think of North Texas and the idea of a fan and such. A fan is someone who jumps on the bandwagon to be associated with a "winner". For me, that is most appropriate for the NFL...or for a few college teams in the national spot light. I am a "fan" of UT in the sense that I am from Texas and want them to win. North Texas is different. UNT is MY SCHOOL. It is the reason for my career and rising out of poverty and giving my children possibilities that I never had. I am proud of my school and my team. I am proud that my school (and the program) is a school of honor and integrity. I am proud that we are not a "football factory" and don't want to be. I am proud when we win, but I don't NEED a group of 18-21 year olds to win for me to know I am a winner and that my school is a winner and that those student athletes are winners. I WANT us to win on the field...but as I said earlier, it is not the MOST IMPORTANT thing.2 points

We are not talking about minor things here. We are talking about catastrophic season and career ending injuries here. Things that can not be prepared for. Things like cramps and pulled muscles can be contributed to lack of training, NOT dislocations, tendon tears, ligament tears and broken bones. Injuries happen. Players get hurt. Is this season unreal? Hell yeah it is, but it sure isnt a "stamina" thing. You want to blame something? Blame UA for their shoes sticking to the turf when players try to cut causing ACL tears. Blame bad luck. Blame Murphy's Law. But its not a lack of preparation. I have a whole big argument about the behavior issues the team has seen but thats another story. However I will say that at the time Dodge was the best hire we could make. And anyone who thinks that all the new media coverage and the building of the new stadium did not get a boost by having a Dodge's name as our coach is kidding themselves. Despite his lack of winning on the field, his name carries weight, especially in Texas and it has helped get more contributors and donors. Having them stay after this year is another story.......... Now all that being said, no excuses this year. If the team does not get 7 wins, then Dodge needs to be gone. He is a great coach, but it did not work here. I would consider giving him a year extension if he gets 6 wins including a win over KSU at the end of the year. I will still pull for my MG and I will still cheer my head coach for every second that he is my head coach. If he does not meet the bar that has been established this year then we will look elsewhere and I will support that coach.2 points

Oh please!!! We are not talking about bumps and bruises here, these are season ending injuries. Check it out, we are approaching at the least 10% of the traveling squad. Yes, there are coaching problems, but to imply other teams deal with injuries of this magnitude without missing a beat is ludicrous.2 points

SOME of you on this board need to understand something about yourselves. SOME of you have an inferiority complex, and you don't know it...which is a part of the complex. SOME of you really get your swagger from how your team wins...or not. Someone said on another post, "I am a winner and I only associate with winners." My response is: Go jump on the UT bandwagon then. Do some of you really get embarrassed at work if we lose? When some college football "fan" ribs me for being a North Texas grad, I just say, "I am proud do be from a school that has a coach in which the players are true student athletes and the program is conducted with class....we will be winning soon...it's only a matter of time." Some need to take a break from all of this and get a handle on things.1 point

Hey guys, try to cool down a little. We are all frustrated. We need every dedicated fan that we can get, regardless of the degree of dedication. All of us have obviously been discouraged by the results of these last five seasons, and what appears to currently be another rough campaign. Some of us have different levels of emotional and financial commitment, and some even have family members directly involved. We need everyone of us to hang together to make the most of this season. Next year holds so much promise; beautiful new stadium and what will probably be exciting new leadership for our football team.1 point

I always think there should be a new coach fund. A place where disgruntled fans can donate to create a signing bonus for a new coach. Instead of not buying season tickets, because I don't support Dodge, I would have invested in a new coach fund. I also think the Leach talk is ridiculous, he's simply out of our price range.1 point

To answer the question posed by this topic, UNT doesn't get another dollar of my money until Dodge wins 7 games this season or we hire a name coach with FBS experience. I let my MGC membership lapse because I was tired of the sorry-ass results we've been getting in football.1 point

Anyone who thinks that Coach Dodge has always conducted himself with class at UNT needs to read what happened to Taylor Insall: http://www.gomeangre...opic=32585&st=0 Insall, a center at Cooper High in Abilene, was recruited by UNT when Dickey was coach. He turned down UTEP and gave UNT a verbal commitment. After Dodge became coach, Insall and the Cooper coach tried to contact Dodge repeatedly. When they finally got a hold of him, Dodge didn't want to see Insall or talk to him. He had zero interest in honoring the commitment. The ending of the article addresses Dodge directly:1 point

They still have Kevin Sumlin. I will take that over what we have over in Denton any day. But that totally blows for UH.1 point

Still my university. Still get my support. Maybe just me, but expecting the program to do more by giving them less money to do it with seems contradictory, though I suppose we are limited in the ways we can show displeasure. I'll still be there with my green on...hopes are still high, but my expectations this year are low.1 point

You have no idea what you are talking about. Every college coach in American has "thrown away" a player. I'm no Dodge basher , but he is human and does not walk on water. Go ask ask former DL Charlie Brown about being thrown away , it's funny that you said this1 point

Yes, and Dodge is that man. Dodge can recruit in Texas like most coaches who would come to NT cannot. If I were a parent, I would rather have Dodge sitting in my living room over many, many other coaches because I know that my son is going to be treated with respect and that he will demand respect from the players. I know that he will be a true student athlete and not just used and thrown away when misfortune or injury happens. I want to see Dodge get the chance to recruit in Texas with this new football stadium. I hope he gets that chance.1 point

I met Derek's Dad at the game, and he could not have been a nicer gentleman. He answered every question my brother and I had aout Derek...and I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him. I am all for the Dodge boot but I think RV has done wonders to the overall athletics program. He effed up with the Dodge hiring...everybody knows that. No because you have to look at the whole body of work and not just the Dodge hire.1 point

I think a lot of it should depend on how he handles the situation. Can he keep the team from completely imploding ? It is the QB position that is going to just kill us. We went into this season with 2 quality starters at QB. That should be enough, even by NFL standards.1 point
