Rice game = heartbreaking Army game = embarrassing4 points

A sane and reasonable post from someone else, because it is not your specialty. Not many disagree with your thesis, but your delivery is like giving Corky from Life Goes On the Declaration of Independence and telling him to read it loudly to every British person he meets.4 points

Based on the personality of the forum lately, I am probably going to get drilled for this comment. However, I agree with everything this gentleman from Rice said. Am I happy with a 5-33 record ? Hell no. The last 2 seasons have been as frustrating as any sports period during my 49 years on this earth. But, I see a very gradual progression in this team, even if it doesn't show in wins/losses yet. If a coaching staff seems to hit a brick wall, I am all for change. This was true for most NT coaches in the past that have been let go (I did like Matt Simon). Yet, there is something about this staff that I am not ready to give up on yet. TD has made some major gaffes in the past 3+ seasons. And, he seems to have underestimated what it takes to win at this level. But, Dodge has not been afraid to admit fault and correct the mistakes (i.e. DeLoach, Canales). I admit that wins and losses are the #1 priority. But, outside of experience, our coach has a lot of highly desirable traits. I really believe that all that he lacks is more experience at this level and a little bit of luck for once. The man is 5-33 and we can still put 24k+ fans in the stands. I honestly believe that a lot of those fans attend because they still believe in this coaching staff and team. I know the feelings of the majority around here. But, be careful what you wish for. Let's just see how this season turns out, before we jump to any conclusions. When the season is over, try and look at things objectively before making any snap judgements. FWIW, I am not okay with winning 1 or 2 games again this season. But, I am willing to let the season finish and then look at the big picture. If the program is not improving, then I am all for cutting our losses. Right now, it is way too early. Go Mean Green ! Let's get this thing started at Army this weekend.4 points

So RV took all the money from other sports like.... building a softball stadium for women's softball, building a tennis complex for the tennis team. I would say that we have several successful sports besides basketball - golf, tennis is improving, softball is improving, etc. At every football home game, there are promotions for other teams. They offer free tickets to soccer games following a home game if you bring in your football ticket. I listen to KNTU often on my way home from work, and there's always coverage for whatever sports teams are playing. We're actually competing fairly well in the fan department, despite our lackluster football performance on the field. We had a great showing for the Rice game, and we manage to draw decently for each season - and much of that is because of the tailgating atmosphere that RV and his staff have created. I've been going to games since 2002 - have missed only one home game in that span - and can tell you that the gameday experience is VASTLY improved. I don't understand how you think that because RV wanted to fire Dickey after 0-5 that means RV doesn't know how to hire a coach. Everyone wanted RV to fire Dickey after that start, except an influential donor and one of the BOR. And that's why Dickey stayed. Sometimes, an athletic director's options are limited by what he is allowed to do through the administration and other pressures. RV took a risk in hiring Dodge - we knew it, and he knew it. It was a gamble he was hoping would pay off, and since the guy had an endorsement from Bill Parcels, it's not hard to see why you might think you've got something. The sad fact is, until recently, North Texas simply did not have the money to lure most of the proven success coaches. I think Dodge only makes $300K per year, or something like that. Most of your bigtime program coaches make $1 million or more. I wasn't a student on campus for this second attempt at getting the athletic fee passed. But I was on campus for the first. I can tell you that RV personally went to every residence hall that would have him, promoting the fee, answering questions, and encouraging students to vote. He worked very hard, and unfortunately due to some misinformation spread by the opposition, the fee didn't pass. I'm disappointed in my fellow students that we weren't able to push it through. But RV learned an important lesson through that attempt, which was that in order for the fee to pass, it had to be completely endorsed by the students. I can't vouch for RV's involvement personally in the second attempt, but based on the lessons learned from the previous athletic fee bill, my guess is that he wasn't simply sitting on his laurels just hoping the athletic fee would pass. There are those on this board who were instrumental in getting it passed - perhaps they can speak more accurately about RV's involvement. But the bottom line is this: RV's dream when he took over the AD job in 2001 was to build a new stadium. That man has worked tirelessly despite the many naysayers and obstacles in his path. He's not perfect, but he's been a great AD for all of athletics, and a great ambassador for this school.3 points

When will RV accept any of the blame for bringing this mess back for another season?3 points

Look at the bright side. We will get to open our new stadium with the optimism and excitement a new coach brings.2 points

rv is the reason for the new stadium. he has done more for the program than you will in your lifetime.2 points

I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that broken bones in the lower leg are NOT a conditioning issue. I was sad to see you guys lose MORE players today, I hope everybody heals completely.2 points

It is just an observation. I really could care less about Dodge and Co. You won't see a "Fire Dodge" thread from me. I was commenting on the fan base. Our fan base as compared to their's.2 points

RV has been successful in basketball and we're in the process of building a stadium. It's not the time to fire an AD, even though he deserves it for hiring a high school coach.2 points

I left the bar I was at because so many people were laughing at unt's play....embarrassing....TD hould have been fired after the second season like many wanted....then season three....now season four...this game was just hard to watch...pathetic....feel sorry for the players. time for TD to move on.2 points

I'd rather focus on our basketball team. Granted, I was interested in our basketball teams during the TRILLI years - which are basically the roundball equivilant of the Dodge tenure. I've been counting down the basketball season starting since April, it just makes it even more of a wish for that season to hurry up and get here since our football squad is hurting so bad.2 points

You know, if there were a team that I had to compete on the field or for recruits and they were coached by a coach with the worst record in their history, i would try to convince them they need to retain that coach too.2 points

I guess I am the exception also....I don't see 5 wins on this schedule, especially after what we have seen last week. 38 games in our special teams are STILL a train wreck.2 points

On another thread, some want to revive Tom Landry and bring him to UNT. If the owner of the Cowboys, Clint Murchison Jr had given in to the press and the fans and fired Landry, we possibly could not be joking about him coming here from the afterlife. Murchison took a lot of heat for that decision, but proved everybody wrong. NOT YELLING HERE, BUT I AM NOT SAYING IN ANY WAY THAT DODGE IS THE NEXT LANDRY, SO PLEASE HOLD YOUR FIRE. Just simply stating, for the fun of it, how cool it would be if the Dodge saga turned into a success story. That's it, nothing else!2 points

UNT Game Preview: Mean Green Sports SMU Preview: SMU Athletics I will post updates from the Mean Green Soccer complex come gametime at 7pm. SMU is 4-2-1 on the year. They have had several games of interest. The opened the year with a 1-0 win over a good FIU team, that UNT will have to find a way to beat Oct. 15th in Denton. On Sunday SMU took down UNM 1-0, a team that UNT managed a 2OT draw with. Losses have come against Portland, and Oklahoma State, with a draw against Oregon. SMU is ranked 8th in the Central Region. UNT is coming off a strong weekend at the Red Raider Classic that included a 0-1 loss to a likely soon to be ranked Texas Tech Squad, and an easy 3-0 win over Lamar. Kelsey Perlman was named offensive MVP of the Tournament and Michelle Young made that all-tournament team. Last Meeting: 2009 - In Dallas, SMU took a 1-0 victory after an odd goal. The original shot took a deflection and fell right to the feet of an attacker who put it in the net for SMU. UNT looked the better team in my opinion but did not get the win. Prediction: It is hard to pick against the Mean Green at home. I see a Baylor-esque game from last year. 2-1 Mean Green.1 point

I am absolutely stunned. I thought that this team has had its share of bad luck coming into this season. This year, our luck was going to turn. It has turned....but only worse. Lady luck has stolen any chance this team had of making a run this season. You can't lose 9 starters and keep any kind of cohesiveness. Bill Walsh couldn't turn this thing around quickly at this point. What has taken place these first 3 games is beyond belief. We are losing an average of 1 starter per quarter. Riley is definately not the answer. He cannot throw with that shoulder and the defense knows it. I feel so awful for our coaches and kids. Nobody should have to endure this kind of treatment.1 point

I hope Dodge is trying to get the team up during half-time. If we can move the damn ball we can still win this game.1 point

2 bad recruiting years and the same offense that had produced 2 prior losing seasons we talking about here ? TTG, you are a great alum and if we had 10,000 more like you, we'd be in the freakin Big 12 today (and I'm serious as a heart attack when I say that). We just agree to disagree many times. No biggie, I did that with some of my favorite cousins, too. GMG!1 point

No, he didn't. And half the starting offense at the beginning of the season was STILL Dickey recruits.1 point

Wow! This is why people don't like to give non-BCS school home-and-home games. Side note: How much is Giovanna Vizza regetting not taking the scholarship to Nevada? Yeah, he'd be riding the pine behind Keapernick (sp?), but the Wolfpack have been to like six or seven bowls in a row and will be half way to bowl eligibility yet again after tonight's win with 10 games left on their schedule. We talk about Boise State a lot; I'd settle for Nevada's success.1 point

Yeah just got done watchin that game, it was a good one, and Nevada, is going to be really good this year, possibly undefeated.1 point

I know we all are hungry for a win....but wouldn't it be nice if there were a tradition by some of our fans and students to greet the team anyway win or lose. I do not mean to sound like we should condone losing, but these guys work their butts off win or lose and I think we should let them know that they are a part of the Mean Green Nation Family and have our support.1 point

We were all feeling good after the Clemson game. We laid an egg against Rice(every team has one of those a year). If we beat Army (which we can). Clemson puts on a good showing at #16 Auburn which makes our game 1 look even better We come back ready to compete in conference, beat FAU (which we should have done last year when they had a future NFL draft pick QB). We're 2-2 coming home for 3 winnable games at Fouts. The season looks a lot different. I mean A LOT different. I know, we haven't shown we can win. But we all felt this team could finally figure it out. Maybe the Rice game was just enough to remind the team how bad that feels. I was a little afraid that the team was reading their headlines coming back from Clemson. I've never seen a team get more kudos from a 35-10 loss. They did play well. They did compete. But it was like they had arrived. rice was a wake up call. Just enough to get that bad taste in their mouth. I think most predicted a split at best for the Rice/Army games. We win tomorrow, the season looks A LOT different than the gloom and doom that's been around since Saturday. Come on Mean Green. Go get 'em.1 point

Thanks yall, looks like the Orange Lot is gonna be where I'm gonna try to go. I'm really looking forward to the trip, my brother moved up to dallas about 2 years ago and I've been waiting for this game to happen since then so that I could use going to see him as an excuse to go watch my cajuns play on the road. With that said, good luck this weekend against Army.1 point

[Rare, non-satirical post]: Why don't you go up to Brandon after the game and tell him to his face how much you feel personally offended by the losing he's contributing to? Seriously man. This board has seen thousands of ways to gripe about the results over the last 4 years, but you have found a way to to do so on a thread about a person who grew up into a grown-ass-man and embodies values we should all hope to manifest in our lives. Put down the shotgun approach and pick up the sniper rifle if you're going to use the forum for target practice.1 point

People seem to ignore Coach Dodge's own quotes. Like the quote that last years team had the talent to win at least five games. Coach Dodge made this quote before, during, and after the season (blaming bad luck for the losses). If you have the talent to win 5 games, and don't, where does the fault lie? I know my own personal answer to that question.1 point

For anyone who has never been to a tennis match at UNT, has never had any interest, etc, you need to go watch these ladies play. Coach Lama has assembled an ever strengthening roster that just keeps getting better. Watch them sometime when they've been playing quite literally all day long and you will be amazed at the endurance of these athletes. Absolutely amazing. If you are coming out for the Fry St watch party Saturday, why not swing by the tennis facility after the Army game (you likely will have to park at the Mean Green Village since not much is available at the tennis courts)? You will have a good time and you'll give these athletes an additional boost on their climb up the national rankings. Good luck ladies! Go Mean Green!1 point

Questions.. too many questions. I think we are finally at the cross-roads with this team, just like one during the 2001 season. Many of us didnt give DD or that 2001 team a shot at winning against MTSU. Dustin Dean told me they started winning because they felt they had to save Darrell Dickey's job... even though DD told them not to think about that. I wonder what it takes for a team to play like that BEFORE the axe gets sharpened? I had hoped the Rice game would be a "MUTS-like" turn-around. These players gave everything they had in the Rice game, and I was proud of the fight they put up, but did they believe they could win? I honestly now think the difference in this team and DD's old teams must be coaching. I know we still have issues with kicking, dropped balls and etc..., but there has to be something else missing? Do we have as much or more talent on the field today than we did back then? DD wasnt a fan of closed practices and secret plays. He convinced his players to step up and show everyone they could win, no matter who's watching or the distractions. The fans and Alums stood right next to those players on the practice fields for all of those years. The coaches understood everyone played a part in that team's success, and we all felt like we were a part. Jamario Thomas once ran a sweep right into the alums on the sideline during practice, then looked up at us and said "That'll be a touchdown in Colorado!" We laughed, but we also believed him. We believed because he believed. Darrell Dickey certainly had his flaws. We all know what happened at the end, and how he exited this program. My point is that it was the head coach who motivated players like Chris Hurd(walk-on), Brandon Kenndy(too short), Darrell Daniels(under-sized), Kevin Galbreath(no break-away speed), Scott Hall(other recruiters considerred him a safety), Patrick Cobbs (too small) and others to play with heart and grit every down. None of those guys were five-star athletes, but ALL of those guys were very successful under Dickey. That is a head coach who knew something. THAT something is what is missing from this team. Is that something tha can be taught?, or do we fall under the "we are who we are" banner? I guess we'll know more tomorrow afternoon, one way or another. Still too many questions... GMG!!!1 point

I agree with you that not all 6 win seasons are created equal. If we went 2-2 in OOC play and were bowl eligible, I think it would be difficult to justify firing Dodge, even if the mandate was 7. Personally, I'd just rather see us win out so we don't have to rehash these questions after every game.1 point
