  1. WHY WOULD YOU GIVE RILEY THE BALL ON 3RD AND 2 ON A DRIVE YOU MUST SCORE ON.........THIS COACHING STAFF KILLS ME. WE HAVE LANCE FING DUNBAR....HAND HIM THE DAM ROCK.

  2. Sounds good to me. I prefer an AD that: 1) Actually raises some money and doesn't require a semi-shady UNT loan to complete the AC. 2) Raises money for the stadium, instead of solely depending on a student fee before proceeding. 3) Doesn't hire a low budget high school coach AND ALLOWED him to bring his entire HS staff with him. 4) When said HS coach and staff are failing, doesn't stomp up and down the field showing the displeasure of his hire. 5) Sits up in the box where he belongs 6) Follows up with his promises (quarterly meetings, "blogs", and the such) I was looking at the donor list and noticed some missing names this year. In fact, looking around section E, I didn't see these "high profile" people either. Struck me odd.

  3. Riley may be a real talent, but I really don't know how we are using him. Last year he was the QB, I just don't see how he fits into this offense this year. He hasn't really lined up at WR and when he does, there's not a whole lot of separation. I have yet to see him throw a pass in a game. Usually it's a option read, and I'm not the best at breaking down a defense from the sidelines, but it looks to be he makes the same wrong decision every time - keep the ball. It's no secret that when Riley is in, you can pretty much bank on run and if there's an option he's keeping the ball. Soo frustrating that from 3rd and 2 we trot out Riley to hang on to the ball to get the tough yards, when we have a couple really good running backs and a line that can run block fairly well.

  4. Amazing, if the score had been NT 33 Rice 32: the sky would be sunny and most would be lauding the turnaround. Now very predictably, many want the instant firing of Dodge, although that would almost surely destroy any chance for a descent season. NT made far too many mistakes to even be close last night, yet they continued to play very hard and actually should have won. Too familiar a story for most, however the season is for from over. Many posters on here seem to think that RV is a great AD. If you have that much confidence: why not let him handle the coaching situation. I don't know if all are aware that NT was playing with 3 of 5 originally starting offensive linemen on the side line last night, J. Jackson playing with a just separated shoulder, and Casey still suffering from his hand injury. Tune had also been knocked out of the game earlier. That is a lot to overcome for a team that started out with good depth but that has changed quickly. Even with the awful special team play and the many injuries; the team never gave up to the their credit. I know any semi-positive response is going to be met with this is the type o,f low expectations that is holding the team back, mantra. However, I like the desire and effort I've seen in the first two games and NT does have some talent. Is this team good enough to challenge for the Belt title, a for more meaningful goal than 7 wins? The mounting injuries are reducing the odds, but there is still time to improve enough to win the Belt. NT did not play well enough to beat Rice, however it is way to early to give up on this team.

  5. You don't know embarrassment, EagleGreen, you shoulda' been around here in 1981 with a 1 year coach who had 1 win and almost got us on NCAA probation to boot! That was (as Popeye would say) "embarraskin." Prediction: Rick V will not fire Todd Dodge on Monday or the next Monday or the next. If Todd Dodge goes 0 & 5, Rick V will probably still not fire him but rather (silently) start his private search for Coach Dodge's successor knowing how important that hire would be as we are on the eve of having a grand opening for a new football palace being built by the same people who built the Dallas Cowboy's jewel over in Arlington. Rick V has taken the worst AD job in NCAA D1 and made it a good job. He will probably move on to a more high profile job one day in the future. Yet.......for UNT to be building a new stadium during this national economy (near depression) is short of a miracle. I look for Rick V & Company to find a corporate sponsor in due time that will divvy up UNT's $30 million minimum amount requirement (which is what I saw as the minimum amount in some UNT publication). IMO, our stadium location makes that amount do-able. Someone already posted it but UNT has been a coaches graveyard except for Fry and Moore (who was only here 2 years). So, if Dodge is terminated, we really need to do the most extensive search for a HFC in our history so we have someone who somebody else wants to hire and FWIW..........that's when you know you've got something. NOTE: Boise State had 5 HFC's in the space of 10 years and did not miss a lick with their football success--that alone is one of the great success stories in NCAA history. Let Rick V do his thing...he's shown that he can. GMG!

  6. Winner, winner chicken dinner. This bunker mentality does nothing but push away the potential fans that get tired of the a**whipping that some of the "with us or against us" diehards tend to put out there (not trying to throw radiogreen under the bus, he's been a defender of mine, just making a general observation). That same bunker mentality also perpetuates the culture of losing that NT is stuck in...and amounts to little more than the repeated acceptance of failure. Rather than expecting and demanding more, the diehards just sit back and accept "moral victories" in the name of "I was here when it was way worse". After a while, it's kinda sickening. All in all, it's safe to call this whole experiment an epic failure. Dodge needs to either submit his resignation or be fired on Monday morning. Chico needs to take the helm in the interim, and NT needs a new coach roaming the sidelines of the new stadium next year. If RV fails to recognize this need, perhaps he should go, too. New stadium, new coach, new staff, new attitude. Call me crazy like some did in the chatroom last night, but I think Mike Leach should be that new coach. He's been shunned (and, therefore, will be less expensive than normal), he has something to prove, and he's batshit crazy enough to take on a flailing program like NT.

  8. Positives: 1) Great crowd....students were awesome....especially on such a hot evening. 2) To me, that was the best our defense has played since Deloach has been back. I know it sounds bad, them giving up 32.....but that was because they were constantly dealing with horrible field position situations. How many drives did Rice start in our end of the field? We totally took McGuffie out of the game (except for the first play). 3) How bout the afterburners of Stratford? Man, did he pull away from their DBs on that TD run. Negatives: 1) Special teams 2) Special teams 3) Special teams There were other negatives....but special teams cost us this game. From not fielding punts to kickoffs out of bounds....to coverage. Did you see how well Rice covered kicks and punts? Just my opinions anyway.

  9. I disagree and am shocked that this is the prevailing thought on this game. Special teams play was horrendous. Muffed kickoff, blocked punt, kicking out of bounds, letting punts that should be fair caught go over their heads, boneheaded penalties... Ugh! The only things I could possibly lay at coach Gandy's feet are the punts that should have been fair caught, and MAYBE the blocking on the blocked punt (depends on if a player missed his assignment). Everything else was player mistakes. These things were probably done a million times during practice without these dumb mistakes (or I'm sure coaches would have corrected that), and we all knew going into this season that our kicking game was going to be the weakest link of the team. What can coach Gandy do about that? What can coach Dodge do about that?? On offense, we were fantastic. Shovel pass to Dunbar was awesome! Tune to Stradford for 75yds was awesome! I was scratching my head when they decided to run the same Zone-read play with Riley in the Rice red zone too. But, coach Canales calls the plays around here correct? Some poor throws by Tune (some great throws by Tune too!) and how on earth do any of the coaches catch the sure TD that a scrambling Thompson threw to JJ, only to see him drop it? How is this Canales' or Dodge's fault? On defense, WOW! These guys did great considering the field position they were given all day. It seemed like every 1st half Rice drive started within field goal range. Great play from these guys and I gotta give coach DLo & Dodge some credit. This unit, other than a few instances of poor tackling and 2-3 poor 1-on-1 cb play(where the loss of Ford hurt us badly), I can't find much fault here. The vaunted RB McGuffie had 18yds on 14 carries! If Dodge is torn down for other mistakes, where is his praise for the way the defense played? Good Gosh people! THE TEAM (including players & coaches) LOST THIS GAME! Everyone who says moral victories are no good, you're absolutely right. Hopefully our guys learn from last night and improve. Coaches need to do their jobs of pointing out and helping correct mistakes, and players need to perform.

  10. So you're okay with the fact that at this point in Dodge's tenure, he still hasn't figured out how to win these types of games? I've stuck with this team through thick and thin since the day I left high school, and I don't plan on bailing now. I am simply stating that the time for a head coaching change is LONG overdue. 5-33 is embarrassing. Sorry.

  11. Last year my 8-year old son and I attended the Army game and had a great time... A close, disappointing loss, but a great game... After the season I asked him if he would like to get season tickets for the next season and he immedialtely replied, "YES!"... So, we cleared some budget and bought 2 season tickets in section B... As the season approached we were both incredibly excited... We attended the Alumni game-watching party at Fox and Hound for the Clemson game and had a great time... Which brings us to last night's game... We had a previous engagement, so we didn't get to tailgate which he loves to do... We arrived at the stadium about 20 minutes before game time... We saw the sky divers and got to see the band... The student section provided an incredible, big-time atmosphere... The game was so tense and relentless that I kept wondering how a 9-year old was taking it... Well, he was yelling his lungs out, pounding the bleachers and cheering on HIS team... When the game was over I looked at my son and I saw that he was disappointed, but then he looked at me and said, "I am so glad you bought season tickets Dad. This was SO fun and it's going to be a great season!" Isn't that what all this is really about...?? I want UNT to win as much as anyone... And I honestly believe they are so, so close... But more importantly I am looking forward to each and every game this season and in seasons to come to spending time with my son at a football game on fall Saturdays...

Many in the stands are very proud of you !! MeanGreen Nation its time to rally around Thompson and Baine ! WE have 10 games left and these two QBs can get It done !!!

  13. our players were most of the reason that we lost the game. besides 3-5 questionable calls on offense, it was all lack of focus from the players. dropped passes, dropped interceptions, bad tackling, bad special team coverage (which could be because of coaching) and a couple of really stupid penalties all coaches can do is put an emphasis on wrapping up and stayin in your lane, they can't do it for them. i'm not saying the past 3 years have been the players fault, but last night it wasn't the coaching that lost the game. i wish people would think about what possible recruits are thinking that are in attendance, when they start their verbal assaults on players/coaches. i would think it plays a part in their decision of choosing our school over another.
    3 points
  14. Wow, we absolutely destroyed SMU in attendance today! As for us, to match our student turnout for the next home game, I think we are really going to have to win the next 2 on the road, and come back 2-2. 1-3 is not going to cut it to get the students out like they were today.

  16. It was the first game I have been able to come back to in years, and I have to say that I was VERY impressed with the band. From the size of it to the quality of the sound it was great. The thing that most impressed me was their spirit. When I was a student (I was not in the band), they seemed to be more in it for themselves. School spirit was almost something they consciously avoided. That wasn't what I saw Saturday night. They were awesome in every sense of the word. I can say that for the whole student body. School spirit has found itself at UNT, and I am so proud of that.

  17. NO WAY this team gets enough wins this year for him to stay...it would take a miracle at this point.

  18. I truly believe that nobody wants this team to succeed more than Coach Dodge does. I believe in this team. They have what it takes to turn this ship around....this year. Call me an idiot, but I still think we WILL win 7 games.

  19. I'd have to disagree. I understand where you are coming from, but I think if the score was reversed many would be saying that we got lucky with our level of play and with the missed plays by Rice. We would be saying there is no way in hell we are going to squeek another one out like that and that Todd Dodge better get his crew coaching and playin better in order to win 6 more. Now, even with a close game, we are saying we see the same thing as last year (close games with poor coaching and execution). I'm not pissed and certainly love the MEAN GREEN FIGHTING EAGLES. I just think that we need a new coach to lead us in the right direction. I think plummer said that we should wait until we get a corporate sponsor for the new stadium to afford more coach. I can get behind that. I think the reason you say everyone is having a predictable reaction is that it was a predictable game with predictable coaching and playing. For that, you will get a predictable reaction. We need a new coach that will get more out of the players he has and recruit big strong mean dudes. GO MEAN GREEN!

  20. Maybe we should get a new AD and move Rick to full time stadium director guy?
    2 points
  21. I think the reason people are upset is because we lost ANOTHER close game. If we had pulled out the win last night people, including me, would believe that Dodge has finally convinced these guys that they CAN win. We proved that we have the talent to win, but at this point, it is becoming apparent that there is a bigger problem. We are not losing half, or even a slight majority of these close games, we are losing ALL of them. Don't get me wrong, I am not jumping ship at all, but I am very, very worried that this coaching staff is incapable of fostering a culture of winning. It is not a coincidence that none of these close games go our way. I used to think that, but year after year this happens. YES, we do not get blown out very often anymore, but these close games have revealed a deeper and more serious problem. Go Mean Green!

  22. +1 Not only yes, but hell yes. I turned on football today and felt some embarrassment for the Mean Green sucking it up lastnight. Then during a conversation with my wife I learned that earlier this summer she had a 14yo patient that came into the ER with an old spice bottle stuck up his keester. THAT is embarassing. I instantly felt better. So keep that 14yo old spice boy in your mind while thinking about Chico and TD. It helps me.

  24. If Leach came here the hottest ticket in town would be going to UNT football games period. I have quite a few Tech friends/alums and they all still adore Leach and will do what it takes to fix that administration up there. One of my buddies pretty much said that Lubbock is a god awful place but when Leach got there...it became a place where many players wanted to come. Leach has single handedly sort of made Lubbock into a town that has grown significant over the last few years with new developments and stuff. Say what you wanna say about Leach but the man knows football and he gets the job done on all levels other than football.

  25. I believe it is absurd to think we can win 7 games. I do think Dodge wants to win more than anyone, he just doesn't have the skills to make it happen. We are basically the same as last year. Maybe slightly better, like a rank of 110 instead of 120. We need another coach that can recruit and execute better.

  26. I am POSITIVE that Coach Dodge gets 10 more games to win 7 BEFORE I will join the chorus of people calling for his head. I am POSITIVE that last night was a new season, SOS. I am POSITIVE that I am commited to see this thing through...no matter if it gets ugly. I NEVER quit.

  27. The new stadium will bring people back no matter what happens this year, and there will be a whole new group of fans who are drawn by it. That's what happened in Orlando at UCF.
    2 points
  28. Yeah... This is getting old... But let's tap the brakes a bit. First, Dunbar dropping the ball isn't the coaches fault. Tune throwing a critical pick isn't the coaching staff's fault. Second, those calling for Canales to be coach right now are many of the same complaining about how Riley is being used. How does shuffling the coaching staff today really change anything in the short term? Many expected a 180 with the new OC, but we're starting the year with a new offensive scheme and a new QB. It's another rebuilding year. I know patience is hard to come by around here at this point - I know as Tune lay on the field last night with 1:00 left on the clock, I turned to my wife and said "I'm really sick of this shit" and as tired and worn out as everyone here, but making sweeping changes 2 games in is not the answer. We've got to play the cards we've got and then reset for next year if we don't get the results we hoped for. Let's quit beating each other up. It gets us nowhere.

  29. We had the lead and the ball and time running down and facing a third and short. So I couldn't believe my eyes when I see tune coming out and RD in the...........SHOTGUN!!!!!! Are you kidding me How many more games are we going to see this tried? Trying to make one yard forward from five yards back??????? It worked once In the first quarter and we showed it to them two or three more times. Rice knew where the ball was by this time. They had seen it before. Amd where is the fullback at such a critical point of the game? To me this was just like Army last year. It is just shocking how we refuse to learn from our mistakes? Rick

  30. This is the same thing you were saying early in year Two of the TD experiment.....even after all th changes....this is where we are at...still the bottom of the barrel!

  31. I could dump on a lot of things related to coaching tonight, but the only thing I will say is that it is truly pathetic that we have not even been able to build something akin to a "D1AA" special team group in Dodge's 4th year. Truly pathetic.

  33. John, you have hit the nail right on the head. Special teams play will be the epitomy of Todd Dodges' career. Well coached teams do make the mistakes our boys do game in and game out. I'm sorry to say, but Dodge will be fired this season and with good reason. A culture of losing has set in and I don't believe the coaches believe they can win either. As much as I like Canales and Deloach, it's time to clean house and bring in a PROVEN head coach with his own staff. The Dodge experiment is and should be over.

  34. I guess the biggest question marks I have formed over my head is how the defense, albeit improved can be so maddeningly inconsistant. One series, they stuff the run, pressure the quarterback and make Rice's offense look feeble. One series later they give up big plays and the corners drop easy pickoff opportunities. I don't share the venomous feelings toward Dodge that some other posters do, but I do believe a change at head coach is necessary to end the culture of failure that permeates this program. We cannot allow the momentum of opening our new stadium to be derailed by failure upon failure. That all being said, I hope the best for coach Dodge and the Mean Green in our remaining 10 games and I would welcome them proving me wrong. GO MEAN GREEN!!!

  36. To me....Special Teams have been awful under Dodge every year. No matter who coaches the Special Teams...no matter the kickers, punters, return people that we have. I have never seen a team miss as many PATs and FGs as we did last year. We've had way too many blocked punts, blocked FGs and blocked PATs. Kickoffs out of bounds....occur way too often. If their KO receiver had let that one go out of bounds tonight....we would have had 3 KOs out of bounds in two games. We're back to the point where any FG over 35 yards.....we're scared to even try. I would think that TD knowing this was his "do or die" year...would have tried like crazy to correct some of this stuff. Maybe he has. But when I see such lousy special teams (worst I've ever seen at NT)....it's easy for me to conclude that Special Teams just aren't a point of emphasis with Todd. Maybe I'm wrong. I like TD a lot and want him to succeed....but these losses are getting really, really old.

  37. Alright, I saw a lot of positives in this game. And there were a lot of negatives too... But you gotta hand it to the D. They played really well, especially for how good of field position rice had to start every drive. The offense was not on its best game. They played really well against clemson and not so well against rice. We had two fumbles (Lance and Nathan), 1 Int, and a lot of dropped passes. But is any of that the coaches fault? No, Its the players' mistakes. So everyone needs to stop being so freaking negative about the coaching. If anyone messed up on coaching, it would be chico, because he didnt get the ball to lance enough, but not Dodge or Deloach. In my opinion, they both coached good games. And special teams..wasn't very good. But hey, we blocked a punt. Trent Deans made his PATs. We still have a lot to work on, but I think we have a good shot at Army. We just have to start strong and finish strong.

  38. This is simply a culture of losing. I don't think this team thinks it can win. You cannot continue to lose these close games unless mentally a team simply not know or believe they can shut the door. That lies at the feet of Coach Dodge. To be up and not be able to close in the 4th quarter over and over again is ludicrous. This may be the only game a get a chance to see this year in person. I feel like I will see somebody walking our sidelines when opening across the street. Great game! Amazing heat! Fun times! Hope for the Mean Green, my team forever! GMG

  41. You really think it would take Leach to get people interested in the program? Heck, we had 23,740 out to see a 4th year coach who had a career record of 5-32 coming in to this game. I think our fans are there. And I think they would be there to give ANY new coach a chance. Leach or anybody. And I'm not anti-Leach.....just speaking up for our fanbase.

  42. The head coach never loses the game by your logic. It all falls at his feet. The special teams being a disaster. The poor tackling. The poor play calling. At some point, everyone needs to quit making excuses for this dude. At what other job would this track record allow you to keep your employment?! Again, I'm not leaving. So don't try to scoreboard me with your loyal fandom.

  43. Sorry Lifer if this is not classy, but Dodge is still the boss. General Cornwallis was very classy, lining his troops up in single file so the Continental Army could whip his ass all the way back to England. You are asking for a class from the fans (investors), why don't you ask for our employees to show some accountability. I have a favorite BBQ place to eat at down here. The sign on the wall says, "Free BBQ tomorrow." I go in the next day and the sign says the same thing. Have I had free BBQ? No. Do I expect it? No. I'm sure some people are foolish enough to believe it. I don't want good football tomorrow. I want it today.
