Was anyone here on campus circa 2000 - 2001? If so, you may recall the grackel infestation on campus and the great idea that our University leadership implemented: Noise cannons. However, this apparently backfired because some of the birds were so spooked by the noise cannons, that they went into cardiac arrest with their tiny bird hearts, and they died... lots of them. This caused an outcry of support for the welfare of the grackels (including chalk outlines around the little bird bodies, and messages like "stop the massacre of innocent birds!"). Does anyone know if "Hooter", or whatever the Rice mascot's name is, will be in Denton for the game? If so, I'm thinking Saturday might turn into something like that... Here's an elementary equation for the Rice fans out there: UNT touchdowns + Boomer = Dead Owls GO MEAN GREEN!5 points

We need ticket sales, that is partly how we fund this program and may count towards what the next conference realignment situation gauges us by. Why in hell would anyone who cares about NT making it to the next level want to encourage others to get in for free? It's not like they are expensive? If you want in the game walk up and buy your tickets. Rick3 points

Just remember that whoever we recruit in basketball that those kids were never CUSA and SMU material so that's why the ended up at NT.3 points

What do you think the chances that one of these days we see UNT's own Lance Dunbar playing on Sundays?? The more I watch this guy the more he reminds me of a little known TCU running back a few years ago....2 points

And RIley and Nathan were hurt against Arkansas State last season. It is football. People get hurt money game or not. I'd wager half the teams that played last Saturday "loost" a player or two for at least a couple of games.2 points

Now there's something I don't think I would admit on a message board.2 points

And mosquito repellent. I don't know about y'all but mosquitoes love me after a big week of rain...if they sucked fat instead of blood I wouldn't mind as much.1 point

Looks like the Mean Green game is going to be on the "picks of the pole" today at 11:10. Get this stat: Home teams playing their 2nd game of the season against an OOC team, that have 17 or more starters returning, with a "revenge" factor against a team that won less than 7 games the year before..... 18-2 against the spread since 1993. I promise, he really said this. I don't know what all that means but it sounds good for our team.1 point

The MAC was terrible but I think they have improved over the last couple of years to where they are a little bit ahead of the Sunbelt in my opinion.1 point

Houston is an intriguing school on all fronts. They are in the center of one of the largest cities in the country, top 5 media market, about 35-40k students, and turning around the athletics program in the sports and facilities like the new stadium. Not to mention they were part of the old SWC and have had a history in being good. They would be an attraction for any BCS conference except the maybe Big 12 but who is to say the B12 would never add them at some point? There are only a few schools that are on the cusp of having a chance at a BCS invitation one day and UH is one of them. I would also put TCU and BYU there.1 point

Providing depth is on the head coach as well. Injuries suck, but they happen to everyone...I don't think this will change the mandate.1 point

I'm not a mooch. I gave my season tickets away for one game the past two years and was hoping that someone might be willing to spare a ticket. I will buy a GA ticket if I need to but I thought my generosity might have brought me the good fortune that someone might have an extra.1 point

We have to play these guys and it does not have to be the dollars only though important, but more to stay competitive.1 point

Ok lifer, for those who lack the ability to read what is implied...The only Rice grad I know of is a former teammate who got a scholarship to play guard for the Rice University football team. Better?1 point

I only saw Gotcher in Austin last year. Quite frankly, he stunk. Based on Rivals, he seems to be enjoying all the attention he is getting. Thank God for guys like Jordan Williams! http://texashoops.rivals.com/barrier_noentry.asp?ReturnTo=&sid=&script=content.asp&cid=1124139&fid=&tid=&mid=&rid=1 point

UNT is in the position to deny SMU a game. We are the better program right now. If money makes a team a sleeping giant then why isn't Harvard a high profile job? What about Rice? They aren't because neither has had much success in their history outside of SMU during the years they were buying football players and I'm sure basketball players as well. SMU won't play us because they don't want to get hammered and have to live with that hanging over their heads. Outside of Memphis, CUSA is on pretty even ground with most of the Sun Belt schools. SMU is going to have "a slew of high end coaching options?" I think Coach Doh was considered high end at the time of his hiring. Look at the facts: RPI: North Texas wins. Facilities: North Texas by a mile. Recent History: North Texas by a mile. Current Coaching: North Texas by a mile. Future Growth Potential: North Texas by a mile.1 point

Well you went from wanting one reason to answering your own question then claiming that isn't a good enough reason. With double talk like that you sound more like a politician than an industry 'insider'! Though if this is your logic then everything you say could change in (checks your post times) about eight minutes.1 point

The only Rice grad I know is the doctor that did my and my son's lasic surgery-Dr. William Boothe. He's clearly brilliant, but he's not the life of the party. Not that you want a Jerry Seinfeld type crawling around in your eye. And a s yiou cann tlee I caan sre fyne. UNT is inconsequential to SMU as well, no debate there. I'm sure many SMU fans would love to see the schools play yearly. Always loved the idea of a UNT/TCU/UNT/UTA pre-season tourney etc. That said, scheduling UNT doesn't make a ton of sense for SMU, as it can only hurt, not help. Beating UNT does nothing for SMU, and losing is bad form and entirely possible. As for relevance, both schools are on many of the same players this year, so discussing Williams/York/Jones is pertinent, even Norris to an extent. My perspective may have an SMU bias, but I'm not here to flame or anything of the sort. Creighton will meet w/York this upcoming week. Simply, Yorks offers are slimming down cause some the schools recruiting him are filling up. That bodes well for both UNT & SMU, should either of those schools really go all-in on York. Cheers!1 point

Not sure about the history classes... When I was at North Texas, I was too busy inventing the cotton gin and programming a crude precursor to Pong to actually go to any classes.1 point
