  1. I'm sick of this conversation...especially when it comes to Thompson and the talk of red-shirting him this season as some sort of penance for Dodge's playing him last season. Thompson is our back-up quarterback and was neck and neck with Tune to be the starter this season...he needs to be game ready and of the mindset that I'm the next guy on the field should Tune go down. Especially considering the other 2 options are walk-ons. Thinking that you'd red-shirt one of two scholarship QBs on your roster is ridiculous. This team doesn't have the luxury of red-shirting anybody who can contribute this season...not just for Dodge's job, but for this football team to have a successful season. If Orr beat out Prior behind Penson at MLB...play Orr. If Abbe needs to contribute on the DL this season...play Abbe. If Wright is one of the best 10 on kick coverage...play Wright. Best players need to play now...start winning and we'll be recruiting better players for the 2013 season, which everyone seems so concerned we won't have a QB for now that Thompson played Saturday.

  2. Look, I'm not going to lie. I saw the OU game in 2007 and the Clemson game in 2010. The corner is turned, yo. We had that thing at 14-7 with just a few ticks left in the second quarter, folks. At Clemson! And, our OL was poking holes in a big defensive line - against Clemson's first team in the first half! Guys, we are going to crush Rice and Army. I know most of you don't believe me yet. But, you will. And, I'm sticking with my prediction that we blow out FAU in Boca Raton. Also, I'm telling you now, we can hang with and beat Kansas State in the finale. These aren't pipedreams anymore. We're not hitch-hiking anymore; we're riding!

Fry Rice.

  4. am i the only one who assumes riley wasn't used too much so that he wasn't on film for Rice to see? is that crazy to think they wouldn't have used him at Clemson to save some of our personel packages for Rice to figure out first hand? that was my thought.

  9. Santiago was blocking a former number 1 d-line recruit in the nation. The fact that he got beat over and over does not bother me as much as the fact that we did not bring in a U-back or tight end to chip the DE so Santiago could get his hands on him. I saw very little help in this way. As good as he is, he was up against someone way better. Stradford is a speed guy. The QB needs more than 1.7 seconds in the pocket for a guy like him to stretch the field. Keep an eye on him in the next 2 or 3 games.

  17. I expected to see Riley used quite a bit more than I saw this past weekend. I know there are those who like to put the young man down for anything he does, but I find it hard to believe that he should not be more involved (example – am I the only one who would have liked to saw Riley throw the pass on the trick play?). I’m hoping we see more and more of Riley as the season moves on.

  19. I want to say something about Savod Atkinson and you will either agree with me or disagree with me: He looks better than he did last year. Now, I'm going to say something else about Shavod Atkinson and you will either agree with me or disagree with me again: He is playing well enough to be a First Team All-Sun Belt performer, and probably Third Team AP All-American since they are too cowardly to give players from our school First or Second Team consideration. Now, I'm going to say yet another thing about Shavod Atkinson and you will either agree with me or disagree with yet again: Rice will be sorry they ever heard the name Shavod Atkinson because it will echo in the heads of their quarterbacks, running backs, fullbacks, tight ends, wide receivers, guards, tackles, centers, kickers, punters, defensive tackles, defensive ends, outside linebackers, inside linebackers, middle linebackers, cornerbacks, free safeties, strong safeties, deep snappers, holders, head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, special teams coordinator, wide receivers coach, running backs coach, linebackers coach, run game coordinator, tight ends coach, offensive tackles coach, offensive line coach, cornerbacks coach, defensive graduate assistant, offensive graduate assistant, trainers, water boys, cheerleaders (male and female), athletic director, assistant athletic director, executive assistant to the athletic director, senior associate athletic director/senior woman administrator, senior exective athletic director, associate athletic director for development, associate athletic director for sports administration/support services, associate athletic director of finance, assistant athletic director for student athlete development, assistant athletic director for facilities and operations, assistant athletic director for compliance, assistant athletic director for marketing and ticket sales, assistant athletic director for team giving and special projects, assistant athletic director for ticketing operations, assistant athletic director for football operations, assistant athletic director for media relations, assistant athletic director for equipment, general manager of Rice Sports Properties, account executive of Rice Sports Properties, associate director of academic advising for athletics, assistant director of academic advising for athletics, athletic academic advising coordinators, marketing director, coordinator of strength and conditioning, assistant ticket manager, "R" Association executive director, video coordinator, data coordinator for development, assistant athletic trainer, video specialist, asssistant equipment manager, staff assistants for football, director of facilities and events, events specialist for football, compliance coordinator, football video coordinator, marketing coordinator, accounting assistant, President David W. 21. They aren't as strong as Clemson in any phase of the game. They don't have the explosiveness on offense for the big plays, the strength of the defense to get stops or the talent on special teams to set up field position. Take away 5 plays from Clemson and that game looks a lot better. We moved the ball up and down the field on them all day. Their speed, ability and home crowd kept us out of the end zone. So given that, I was afraid of a possible let down this week. Maybe there could be a motivation issue.... I'm not worried about that either. Coach Dodge mentioned it on his show Monday and it has to be continually said in front of this team all week: 77-20 We're bigger, stronger, faster, better coached and more experienced than we were when they humiliated us. Our o-line and defense will be playing in front of the home crowd and should be good and pissed off. Lance runs wild. Nate puts up big numbers. MEANGREEN. 48 Rice. 27

  22. I don't want to jump the shark here or anything, but... ...do you all really think there will be a coach out there who doesn't know Riley used to be a quarterback? And, if they all know that, won't they be telling their defenses, 'Hey, when this guy #11 gets in the game, watch for a reverse or pass or cakebuilding or something.' I just don't think using Riley every now and then will give an element of surprise. If he was a WR every down, or more downs, then maybe. But, if he's only brought in a couple of times a game, there's not going to be much of a surprise in what he does.

  23. What amazes me about 1999 was that we went 2-9 under dickey, but our two wins were at Texas Tech and at home to Boise State, both of whom finished with winning records and beat some really good teams. That is why just beating name teams doesn't get the fanbase going, nor does just winning conference games in the SBC and nobody else. It takes both.
    1 point
  24. I think they played this one close to the vest. No need to blow our element of surprise with his packages. Clemson negated the wildcat package with their speed -- nor were we really close to winning and 10 more of his plays would make the difference.

  28. Got back from Clemson this evening. Clemson has the detail and manicured campus of Oklahoma State's, the fan hospitality of Nebraska's, the pregame party of LSU, the stadium of texasU, accessibility of U Lafayette all sitting in the middle of rolling foothill mountains covered under 80 foot Pine, Cyprus and Oak trees. And it is a very easy place to get to from here. Coming back today we made it from Suwanee, GA(northeast of Atlanta)to Dallas in eleven hours, forty five minutes. If you ever get a chance to go this is the one place you should make for an out of town game. I was very proud of our team and how they played all things considered. I liked how this team handled themselves under pressure, not looking overwhelmed, moving the ball and forcing Clemson to punt and never giving up. Here's a shot I got of Darius Carey's touchdown. Other than for the loss this was one of my favorite road trips of all time. I'm looking forward to opening day at home next Saturday. I'll post more photos later. Rick

  34. Was at the game...one of the best college football.games I've ever been at. Boise's defense needs to step it up...but they still hung in there when it counted. Gotta hand it to fans of both teams. Classy folks all around...and not one single person was offended by my lack of previous attendance or one-time enrollment at their school. 39. Let' see (bare with me, going off memory) Coach Dodge spoke about the great atmosphere at Clemson. Away coaches have the choice of when they want to come out, 1st or 2nd (don't think i knew that). Dodge wanted his team to come out first to soak it all in. He was proud of his team. They battled until the very end. He said the team was down on the bus after the game, they thought they had a chance to win. Film yesterday (or this morning?) was filled with a room fool of focused kids. He said they're confident but know they've got some things to work on. (I liked hearing that) Clemson gained half their yards on 5 plays. Lance showed his explosiveness. On the shuffle play late in the game, Georgio thought he was gone but got tripped up from behind. Dodge said that's only the 2nd time he's seen Lance get caught from behind. The other was against WKU and he "took some ribbing" on that one. Dodge seemed pleased with our 3rd down conversions. Offensive penalties and mental mistakes have to be corrected. He talked about the infamous celebration penalty. Talked about being unselfish and they've talked about it all offseason. Players don't need to "bring glory to themselves." (Thank you Dodge for saying that) He put them in a bad position. Even though its up to the defense to get a stop, giving a team like Clemson the ball on the 50 is not good. Injuries: Ford may be back. Bennie Jones will not be. The kid worked hard and earned a scholarship.....Dodge was disappointed for him. Bragged on Lippo stepping up when J.J. Johnston went out. (I don't remember but I believe he expects him to be back Saturday. Um...... That's all I can muster right now...

  40. In some ways, it might seem like the offense was "more of the same"--dynamite between the 20's, but very little in the red zone. But as has been pointed out repeatedly, this was against Clemson. None of our opponents will have an equal, and probably not comparable, red zone defense. Also, Coach Canales has put in a LOT of new wrinkles into this offense, and everything has not started clicking perfectly yet. Just wait until we hit our conference schedule. If we are able to duplicate that type of ball control against Sun Belt teams, I promise you that we will score far more than 10 points every time.

  44. I do not agree with you on this one. There is a really good chance that Thompson is going to be the QB around here for the next two seasons. That would be the case unless some stud recruit comes in and beats him out...not likely. Due to this fact, you get Thompson in any game you can so he can learn the speed of the game, and get reps against someone other than his own defense. The LAST thing you want to happen is for him to start next season without any additional game experience other than that drive against Ark. St. Tune is going to be the guy this year...no doubt about it, but Thompson would greatly benefit from some game action. Too many of you are sadly, to no fault of your own, used to NT throwing QBs to the wolves. This is actually a luxury to be able to get Thompson some time in games when everything is not riding on his shoulders. It will make his transistion to starting QB much easier.

  45. I guess it could happen but if we change head coaches I see a clean sweep, we have money now. The guy coaches in one game and already he is the next head coach wow. If we get a new Head Coach I want RV to go to the Market and find us a proven head coach to get this show rolling. And we should not have to worry about any of this for a while hopefully, Dodge is our man now! Destroy Rice, payback is hell.
