  3. Good teams make their own luck. They're resilient, they don't consistently make egregious mistakes in critical or routine areas, one early non-con game doesn't define or impact the rest of their season ("sails" or otherwise), and they never wonder about woulda, coulda,, or shoulda. I get the frustration... that game was an epic crotch kick. But we weren't good enough to win it.... or most of our other games. The collapses we witnessed (the IMPOSSIBLE 4th quarter against Army comes to mind) were indicative only of a team that wasn't ready to win and was completely and embarrassingly unable to execute even the most basic of junior high level fundamentals at critical times (PATs, anyone? Back to back time outs?). The fact that we stayed close in several games is a credit to the talent that we DO have, and I do feel like we have reason to be optimistic about the future. But I disagree that we were "close" to being a top half of the conference team last year or that predictions slotting us at 3 wins this year are offensively wrong. A LOT has to change here in a very short time... literally, an entire culture and mindset has to be reworked, not to mention a fundamentals-on-up coaching job that is almost like starting from scratch. This is a big, big, job, and while we have some hope that pieces are falling into place and we've made some upgrades on the sidelines, history tells us quite clearly what to expect. A turnaround like some of us seem to expect (or maybe just hope for) would, quite literally, be unheard of in the realm of college football. So, yeah, I hope we go out there and make some history. I hope the players and coaches buy into the fact that we actually can do so.... but I don't think there's a 7 win ultimatum, and I think we need to focus on extra points, clock management, and not running into each other before we start marking of W's, past or future.

  10. My name is Kyle Wise and i am a UNT student working for the McKinney Marshals baseball team of the Texas Collegiate League. This saturday is our last game and we have been getting alot of groups for the game. I was able to get Mean Green Great Johnny Quinn out to throw out one of our first pitches. I would love for us to have as many UNT supportors out to the game as possible. Tickets are normally $5 for adults and $3 for kids 5-12 and seniors 55+, but if you wear a UNT shirt at the game this Saturday you will recieve $2 off your addmission price. If you have any questions please let me know and i hope we get a ton of Mean Green Fans out. The stadium is located at 6151 Alma Drive in McKinney (right off of 121). ***Also another added bonus is that we will have beer specials of $2 beer for a 16oz. *****For any businesses we are offering free addmission to the game if you are able to bring a table to have information about your organization on it and we will allow up to five people from that organization in for free. If interested please send me an email at kylelwise@tclmarshals.com

  17. Limited to the ones I've seen in person, they've all come in the past 5 years. Outside of that, the Tulsa home loss and the road loss to Akron were pretty miserable watch/listen experiences. The loss to Oklahoma wasn't as terrible, though it wasn't fun watching it at Pluckers near SMU and having to listen to everyone in the place mock us. I'm also glad that FilmerJ and I elected to go to Stillwater for the OSU-NT basketball game last year instead of watching Army at home, or that game would probably be on this list. We heard the meltdown on the radio during the drive back and got the immediate recap from 4 different people who sounded like they'd just been through a car wreck. My list: Kansas State - 2008 opener. Kept the faith through the Mendoza year, got excited about the DeLoach return, believed the cowstool about "Fight 'till the last whistle" and "crush your opponent's will to compete". Went to see the game in person with my brother and FilmerJ. Night before, we watch the new look June Jones Mustangs get throttled on national TV by Rice. Spirits are high. Day of the game, we go out and lay an even bigger egg than the one we saw in 2005 at the same stadium. A few days later, the coach admits he gave up trying after just a few series. I still get angry thinking about this one. Rice - 2008 road game. Stayed with my girlfriend's parents, and they still had no power in the aftermath of the hurricane. Half the d-line goes down with injuries, and when we can't keep pace with the Rice offense we just start running up the middle before halftime to kill the clock. First play of that last halftime drive, Vizza fights his way through a pile and picks up something like 20 yards. The coaches suddenly have to actually make an effort on the drive again, and I think Rice gives us up some yardage (pretty much the only yardage we gain) on penalties. But we don't score any points (then or at any point thereafter in the game), Rice continues to dominate and effectively starts kneeling on the ball in the 3rd quarter. So many fumbles, miscues, turnovers... Wind up diffusing a near fight after the game, then go home to an un-air conditioned house with no lights to wash the failure off in the dark. Louisiana Monroe - 2008 road game. Anyone who calls Giovanni Vizza a "quitter" wasn't at this game. His coach quit on HIM. We go down 28-0 in the first 17 minutes of the game. Vizza leads the team down inside the ULM 10... Field goal attempt. A visibly agitated Rick V leaves the sideline, shaking his head. Last possession of the half, down 35-3. We get the ball with 2:36 remaining and 2 timeouts. We waste a LOT of time getting plays called, but Vizza connects twice with Stickler for 44 yards and once with Cam Montgomery for another 20 to put us on the ULM 11 yard line. With 18 seconds left and us 11 yards from the end zone... Dodge sends in the kicking team AGAIN. RV is already long gone from the sidelines, and this call prompts several players' parents to leave the stadium. Only one came back to our section... If the rest watched the 2nd half, they did it from somewhere other than our section. First drive of the 2nd half, down 35-6, the offense drives down to the ULM 27. 4th and 6, down by FOUR SCORES... Dodge sends in the kicking team AGAIN. Again, disgusted parents get up and leave the stadium. Kick is good, so now the 4 score deficit becomes a slightly lower 4 score deficit. 3rd quarter, 6:39 left. Offense drives to the ULM 24 yard line. 4th and 4, 21 minutes left in the game, down by 26 points (FOUR TOUCHDOWNS)... Dodge sends in the kicking team AGAIN. No good. Still down 35-9. 36 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, down by 26. 3rd and 1 on our side of the field. Incomplete pass. 4th and 1 - Dodge sends out the punt team. A shocked Vizza runs off the field and screams "What do we have to lose?!??" Answer: The game. We score 2 TDs in the 4th quarter, but at that point all it does is make a more respectable 35-23 final score loss. Whenever I hear people start with the "we were only X points away from Y more wins!", I think of this game and the ULL home game from the same year when we were kicking field goals in their red zone in the 2nd half. Ineptitude and godawful decision making like what we saw in this game are why we've been "X points away", not bad luck. Ohio - 2009 home opener. Aside from what's already been mentioned and the terrible weather, my main memory of this game is doing overtime play-by-play on the phone for Quoner, who was out of town. From the agonizing dropped TD by Outlaw to the even more agonizing 4th and 15 TD conversion to the Bobcats changing their mind and deciding to go for two (if I recall correctly, they changed their mind after WE called timeout) it was like narrating the end of our season. When they connected on the 2 point conversion, I was so sick I couldn't even get the words out. He figured out we had lost by the crowd noise. Louisiana Lafayette - 2009 road game. Everyone remembers the meltdown against Ohio, but nobody seems to remember this one as the final nail in the coffin of a season that was still only 1-3 and very salvageable. We start the 4th quarter up by 10 points. We stop ULL on 4th down, only to give them 15 yards on a facemask penalty. They drive the rest of the way down the field and convert the TD on 4th and goal from the 1 yard line. We get the ball back on our own 42 with less than 9 and a half minutes remaining. Riley illegally completes a pass to himself for a loss of 18 yards (the loss was worse than the penalty on that play). Under heavy pressure (a declined running into the kicker penalty), we get off a 34 yard punt to Lafayette. Lafayette starts with good field position... But the defense holds. We start with the ball on our own 21 and 6:20 remaining. A few first downs, and ULL burns all their time outs. With less than 2:30 remaining, on the 48 yard line... ULL brings heavy pressure again and we kick a 10 yard punt. Literally a 10 yard kick; it went out of bounds and there was no return. Lafayette starts at midfield with zero timeouts and less than 150 seconds in the game. Again, the defense forces a 4th down and ULL throws an incomplete pass... But we get called for defensive holding. ULL converts a TD, and we're down 38-34. Royce Hill gets a nice return and we start near midfield with 30 seconds and 2 timeouts left... But we throw a pick on the first play of the drive and the game is over. Everyone remembers Ohio as a stunning blow that stopped the season in its tracks, but I think the ULL game was the knockout punch.

  18. Another one that wasn't exactly within the last 10 years, but since we are strolling down a painful memory lane... 1994 Boise St 24 UNT 20 First round of the I-AA playoffs in a year that I think we could have gone very deep (maybe even one the thing) had we been able to get out of the first round. If memory serves, I believe we were ahead for most of this game until things fell apart late as Boise started blitzing on about every play.

  20. Honestly, I am surprised that there was not any more discussion regarding the Ohio game. The was one of those games that we were evenly matched on with our opponent (a very good Ohio squad), but we could just not pull it out. I was not able to watch the game live...but listened to the whole thing on the radio. Needless to say...I wept like a baby and was absolutely sick to my stomach! However, and this is what I was after with this thread, THAT was the season changer right there. Period. We never rebounded from that. That took ALL of the wind out of our sails. It is like the team just had nothing left in them...a soul defeating loss. Having said that, if we can just get over the hump we could actually have a pretty decent SB team. I do not think we are even close to being a BCS buster...much less a near Top 25 team...BUT we could be a really good SB team and compete with the Troys, MTSU, et al... Man...are we due a break or what??? The tide has to turn this season, right??

  23. Without NFL Europe not many options to get paid to play football besides NFL and CFL. I don't see it any different than guys going overseas to play basketball before those leagues became more legitimate. This league is only in its sixth year and is growing each year. Like you said can't be bad to dominate and get paid while you can to play a game you love.

  25. We'll never play another game in the past. It was a real heart breaker and a harbinger of things to come last season. There were many opportunities to win last season that evaporated...the team just did not know how to finish. In that game in particular, we needed to make one play and had at least three shots at it. This is a new season that is approaching quickly and another chance for this team to maximize its potential. It is not out of the question for this to be a 7-5 or even an 8-4 team if they can learn to play smart football in the fourth quarter and put people away.

  27. ...and here's the BIG dilemma that clouds my thoughts on TDodge. I would like nothing better than to see Dodge turn it around at UNT and coach here for a long, long time. He is an absolute class act and seems to really want to be here (unlike previous coaches who shall remain nameless). However, we haven't even been competitive in our games against Troy with Dodge at the helm. The 45-7 loss was the worst beating I've ever witnessed, at this level, when you consider that we had 7 takeaways and still lost by 38! We hardly put up a fight against the best teams on our schedule year in and year out and that really, really worries me. I realize we were 19 points away from a winning record last season, but that was 19 points against a cream puff schedule. The really tough teams we played put us away quickly. If we manage to win 7 games this year, but are not at least competitive with Troy and MTSU (or whoever ends up winning the conference)....then I'd rather not see Dodge return. I don't know if that makes me a fickle fan, an idiot or just plain beaten down.

  29. I want to play Houston. I'm not saying that we shouldn't. I wish we played Houston every year. I'm from Houston. I'll make that trip every time. I'm saying we shouldn't make that game the first one in our new stadium. I'm not scared to play Houston. I'm being realistic. We've won five games in three years. A new stadium isn't going to change that over night. If we have another bad season, Houston is going to embarrass us. I don't want my first memories of a game in the new stadium to be a disaster like the Tulsa or the last Rice game. Based on our recent performance, the most likely opportunity opening against Houston presents is receiving a beat down as we open the new stadium on national T.V. No thanks. We play WKU at home in 2011. Finish the stadium on time and move the WKU game to Sept. 3. If we don't, odds are we will regret it.

  32. I know Spencer personally (though not really well) and I am sure this decision was absolutely gut wrenching for him and his family. He has been an outstanding coach for UNT for many years and deserves all the slack in the world. He has done great things for the Mean Green. While the timing sucks, this is our current place in the college football world. Vandy snags the coach from a smaller fish and that fish goes and snags the OL coach from an even smaller fish. This is what happens when you have good coaches, other schools will want them.

  33. +1, and I've been thinking the same thing. There's something to be said about enthusiasm. Let's remember that Tulsa gave us a pretty good shellacking while Bryant was playing there, and (Leftwich was coaching there). Since it appears that, by serving as a GA under Leftwich, he was taking a career track towards being a college football coach, I'm sure he paid attention and learned something from the man he's replacing.

  34. You guys calling him sorry are freakin' nuts. It's obvious job security was a major factor. Dodge will be gone after this year, so where does that leave him?? Seriously, Dodge was all but fired at last years end. What do you think the coaching staff went through during that very short and bizarre period?? Why take a chance and go through that again??? Don't blame the guy one bit. Besides, he's on the inside and an experienced coach that knows what this team is capable of. His glasses obviously aren't tinted as deep green as some of you here.

  36. It's not just pitchin', it's Tyson chandler and the flexibility to sign Harrington and... to (not) trade for Chris Paul later when NO gives up, but they will tease us with $30M in expiring contracts next year. Look out free-agency summer 2011 (/wanking motion) Let's keep the focus on the basketball team that makes me happy. This is great news.

  39. Well...now that we know who's here and who's gone...lets start up a solid penalty-kill thread and speculate on what the 2-deep will look like heading to Clemson QB - Derek Thompson...Nathan Tune TB - Lance Dunbar...James Hamilton UB - Micah Mosely...Jeremi Mathis OWR - Tyler Stradford...B.J. Lewis OWR - Christopher Bynes...Michael Outlaw IWR - Jamaal Jackson...Alex Lott IWR - Darius Carey...Riley Dodge TE - Jamize Olawale...Connor Gilmartin-Donahue (gotta good feeling about this kid) LT - Esteban Santiago...Troy Franklin LG - Kelvin Drake...John Noble C - J.J. Johnson...Aaron Fortenberry RG - Coleman Feeley...Jeremy Bean RT - Victor Gill...Matt Tomlinson - I don't see too many surprises in starters aside from QB...I think Thompson's added mobility will win him the job by keeping the zone-read as something of a threat. Skill positions look deep...the line is good, but one injury away from being a concern. DE - Brandon Akpunku...K.C. Obi DT - Shavod Atkinson...Tevinn Cantly DT - Kelvin Jackson...Kyle White DE - Frank Gaines...Brandon McCoy (mark it) OLB - Jeremy Phillips...Brad Graham MLB - Craig Robertson...A.J. Penson OLB - Forlando Johnson...Julian Herron CB - Royce Hill...Robbie Gordon CB - Steven Ford...D'Leon McCord FS - Ira Smith...Ryan Downing SS - DaWaylon Cook...John Shorter - I hope someone like Weber or Anyiam or Miller actually starts at DE and AK-47 only plays as a pass rusher...but I doubt it. I think McCoy is going to be a huge surprise. And as much as we've criticized Dodge for not recruiting on the lines, the DL looks pretty deep. Unless Penson or Prior really impress...and considering the depth at OLB...I think a move for Robertson to MLB would be beneficial. Robbie Gordon has a strong senior year.

  42. Confidence... Never discount the mental aspect to sports. You are more likely to be able to do something if you know that you have done it before with success. That was one devastating play for this team. Remember, you aren't dealing with seasoned, mature adult pros, you are dealing with 19-22 year olds. That shot of confidence could have led to victories over ULL, Army, and maybe even Ark St. (Ok, 5-7, not .500). Ya, the dropped passes/intercetion cost the win in regulation, but those were offensive mistakes, not defensive. And don't forget, the defense then allowed the 2 point conversion right after 4th and 16. So I guess I would say two devastating plays from which this defense never recovered. Aside from the WKU game (the only team on our schedule that had less confidence than UNT), the defense never made an important, game saving play the rest of the year. We can argue all day, but since it didn't happen, we will never know.

  45. I understand the man had to do what is best for his family. I don't know if he left for job security or for the money. At this point it doesn't matter. The timing of all of this is terrible. I have no interest in viewing this as an opportunity to advance a possible up and coming coach. After finally replacing all of those high school assistants over the past few years, I don't want to add a guy with no experience as an O line coach at the FBS level. Why can't we go hire Canales' old O line coach from South Florida? Didn't someone post that he is at a FCS school. Can we not offer him more money then that school? I know UNT needs to make a quick decision with 2 a days about to start, but lets try to make a smart decision. Also, although I can't blame Leftwich for leaving, I wouldn't want him back here at North Texas. Has he burned this bridge?
