Some insight on who we might open the stadium against. His realistic expectations for the football team this season. His thoughts on interim president Rawlings and what he's been able/ will do for UNT athletics. Timetable for baseball's return to UNT once the stadium is complete.2 points

Yeah that is a good point, I just remember all of the hype when he was recruited, that is why I said that. I probably should remove that post because I was not aware of why he transfered.2 points

Not to be a bully but... what exactly did you say? There is no way this is a must win. Those of you voting 'Yes' are crazy. The fact is it's a non-conference game. If we win the Belt no one cares about this game. If we win this game but get killed in the Belt... guess what, no one cares about this game.1 point

When can we actually buy authentic North Texas football jerseys? What's up with our CLC license and why does it suck?1 point

Yes....BASEBALL, BASEBALL, BASEBALL Everytime I go up to the new stadium site, I look across the street and get excited about the prospects of a baseball stadium where the empty field is...1 point

I think it's a good idea for Bryant to carry Williams' pads, as Williams might drop them.1 point

Our biggest strength just became a possible glaring weakness....hopefully the experience on the line will help buffer the new coach, but what happens IF we do win 7 games and Dodge gets to stick around? in 2011 we'd need to coach up some of the inexperienced players to fill holes----which is without a doubt the biggest year in the program's history. Looking back, there was certainly not a win/win decision for RV to make last November. Cut Dodge loose and you risk sending a message that we don't give coaches enough time to build a program, keep him without extending and you kill job security and recruiting. Losing coaches, like Lefty, was a risk that we chose to take. I don't like that he chose to leave so close to the season....and probably wouldn't be comfortable ever hiring him back at UNT. Which is unfortunate b/c he was one of our our best assistants.1 point

To put it as diplomatically as possible... Woody transferred because he didn't think he was going to get a fair shot at the starting QB job. He chose us over BCS offers like Arkansas because they wanted him as a DB and we were willing to let him play quarterback. Then, a year later, the new coaching staff was apparently pushing him to play DB.1 point
-
He beat SMU, looked very dynamic in a lot of games his first year, then got jerked around and decided to transfer after the coaching change. Wouldn't call him a bust, and any disappointment that I felt about his career here wasn't directed at Woody.1 point

Looking at the poll and how everyone is answering, it appears you are redefining "must-win." Getting blown out on a road and then getting beat at home, puts UNT in a deeper recruiting hole. It is a must win to beat the teams that are our recruiting competition. We must win that battle to win the recruiting war. Especially if we do end up 9-3 (like you offer up) and Rice goes to a bowl too, but they beat us and that matter to a recruit. Hell, it is even worse if Rice goes 1-11 and we still go 9-3. So yes, I think most people find it a must-win. By your definition, no game is a must-in, because the season should never be over in the player's head. They should never fold.1 point

I'm glad Troy Phillips is back on the beat. Brett Vito, in my opinion, has done a good job, but I noticed a couple of times this summer when he was really posting things that this forum does well enough, like posting smack talk from the private school to the south. Competition is a good thing.1 point

Anybody else notice the newly formed competition between Vito and Troy Phillips? Are they both going to be the "first" to report every story from now on? lol. Either way, I see a lot more coverage from now on, and daddy likey. ok, back to OL coach talk.1 point

What about Canales' old line coach from South Florida? I would think the guy knows how to coach blocking for Chico's offense. The guy was a successful O line coach in the Big East. Lets not sell ourselves short. I'm not sold on Bryant being our best option just yet. I hope the people doing the hiring stop, take a deep breath, and make sure they have really covered all their bases before settling on this guy.1 point

I understand the man had to do what is best for his family. I don't know if he left for job security or for the money. At this point it doesn't matter. The timing of all of this is terrible. I have no interest in viewing this as an opportunity to advance a possible up and coming coach. After finally replacing all of those high school assistants over the past few years, I don't want to add a guy with no experience as an O line coach at the FBS level. Why can't we go hire Canales' old O line coach from South Florida? Didn't someone post that he is at a FCS school. Can we not offer him more money then that school? I know UNT needs to make a quick decision with 2 a days about to start, but lets try to make a smart decision. Also, although I can't blame Leftwich for leaving, I wouldn't want him back here at North Texas. Has he burned this bridge?1 point

I don't like the subject of this thread, there are lots of players who did not live up to expectations; but the label a player a bust that NT wanted and signed seems very inappropriate to me. Milton is often cited as a big bust, only problem he wasn't : he ended up starting in the defensive line. He also provided more publicity to NT than any signee. Approximately 50% of all players who sign a division 1 ship have little impact on a program whether it is NT or UT. Do you label all of them busts? Even if you do, you could not include Collins because he gave a big boost to Fry's program for just signing and played a lot. He was the most heralded recruit in Texas that year, therefore the fact he did not turn out to be a super star was disappointing to NT fans. However, he did contribute a lot to NT.1 point

I would add Jackie Miller, an all state player from Georgia; who batted .517 her senior year in high school. She also started for 4 years in hs with a career batting average of .445. Know nothing about Georgia softball, but those numbers are impressive.1 point

I don't know how long admin will let this one last, but I figure busts are a part of life in sports. Everyone else gets to talk about theirs...why can't we discuss ours? I figure current players can't be on the list because there is still time to prove themselves if they are currently on the roster QB - Joey Byerly RB - Roy Bishop RB WR - Sam Roberson WR - Sam Dibrel TE OL - Ajani Banks OL OL OL OL DT - TJ Raymond DT DE - Willie Ransom DE - Eli Hutchinson LB - Trent "something" didn't even make fall camp, but was supposed to be a bad mofo LB - Brandon Monrow...loved this guy...really pulled for him...never did much LB CB - TJ Covington CB - Dominique Green S S I am sure I am missing some guys...thought it could be an interesting topic0 points

Nope. Every game is important, and I want to win every game. And this may be our most important OOC game, and one that I especially want to win after what they did to us last time. But we just don't know what Rice team we're going to see this year. Rice had a down year last year, and that may well have been an aberration. They will have some serious depth at RB, including a transfer from Michigan who had to sit out last year. Last year's starting QB may well wind up #3 on the depth chart. Rice will certainly be a better team than last year, and may even be at the upper echelon of C-USA. Whether we win or lose will make the road significantly more or less managable, no doubt. But I wouldn't necessarily write the whole rest of the season off if we lost that game.0 points

I would hope at least 5,000 NT fans travel to San Marcos with the quality of our basketball team. We are far from any position to be talking trash about support for our basketball program. Hope to see you in San Marcos on Nov. 27. If you're not in San Marcos, you need to be at Fouts.0 points

Knowing the culure at North Texas is huge for any coach. It's my belief that Coach Dickey had absolutely no idea about the culture at North Texas when he took that job. "If UNT shocks the world and wins seven games, Bryant is the guy who came in at the last minute and helped save the day. If UNT tanks, he still has an FBS stop on his resume." ....and someone will have a built-in excuse for another losing season.0 points

It seems like this (apparent) hire is about continuity. If we were hiring a new OL coach at the end of the season, we could hire a coach who would bring in a whole different set of blocking schemes and terminology. Less than two weeks away from fall camp, it is key that the new coach can simply pick up where Lefty left off. I doubt anyone could do that better than Jeff Bryant.0 points

The king is dead...long live the king! Good luck Lefty and thanks for all you did while you were a member of the Mean Green Nation. I hope you made a good decision for yourself and your family as we all end up having to make those decisions at some time or another. Now, adiós Lefty and welcome to the new line coach...when the announcement is made. The Mean green will be fine and this will open up opportunities for others...both coaches and players. GO MEAN GREEN!-1 points

--- The first four letters of his last name pretty much sums up his history it seems.... and once again. --- He has the right to do as he wishes but seems a bit unethical to leave just before the season opens... His agreement to coach for us this year apparently meant nothing. I wonder what he would have thought if we had found a better coach this week and just fired him to hire the better one with just a couple weeks until the season (practice) starting ..? That works both ways. This is all about timing, not his right to change jobs.-1 points

Thoughts on UNT going with Bryant http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/archives/2010/07/thoughts-on-unt-going-with-bry.html EXERPT Bryant has been at UNT, knows the players and the basics of what the Mean Green is trying to do offensively. And he knows the culture of UNT. There is something to be said for that at any school. I go to practice every day, so I remember Bryant. He was attached to Spencer's hip most of the time.-1 points

Well, how would you like to pick up a paper, look on the internet, or turn on the tv only to hear your child, wife, or significant other called a "bust", especially at a perennial powerhouse of football like we are here at UNT? The one guy that this football program identifies itself with has not stepped on a football field as a player in 30 years. Guess we have had lots of busts since he played here, because no other player since him attracts the same attention as he does when he shows up an event. Yes, he is an NFL Hall of Famer, but hey we have our standards here, right? Man, calling young men who, for the most part, are working for an education to hopefully better themselves, be able to earn a living, and make a positive contribution to society "bust" is really low.-2 points
