  2. WKU is only failing because they made the jump? I doubt that. It's more likely that whatever advantages that gave them a winning team in FCS--be it coaching and superior talent or a combination thereof-- were nullified by equally good and/or superior teams in the FBS. They couldn't scale up that talent. Looking at the Florida schools, and you can maybe make the argument that because of the deep talent well thy is the state, they can scale up somewhat and that is the reason they made the jump relatively smoothly. So, we are really asking if UTSA or Tx St can scale up. (UTSA moreso, because they don't even have a winning system in place). If other schools have not already tapped the Texas talent well, they should -in theory- land on their feet in the FBS. That said, I have become even more depressed about UNT because we suck so bad and all we have are 'scuses that SMoo and the Toads don't want to let us play. ugh. gmg

  3. the sunbelt is improving but i can't wait for unt to get out of it. it will be stuck in the minnow end of the pool for a long time. we need to be at least to the level of cusa if not higher. don't settle for less.

  4. It seems that almost every fb division football or basketball player in Texas that wants or has to transfer is assumed good enough for ole NT. Any such player was good in High School but that does not mean he will be a success at the next level, no matter how many stars he received. Jones has done a great job in finding basketball players who can not only play but fit in. Unfortunately, the football program has not had that kind of success. As far as criminal or character issues, each case has to be analysed. I think almost everyone is for giving people a second opportunity but no one wants to turn NT into a haven of malcontents or criminals. Personally I no not like the Troy model for success which is based on finding very good athletes with risks that most programs don't want to take. D. J. Jones, may or may not be a good fit for NT. I would hope that NT at least evaluates his situation to determine if there is any mutual interest.

  6. Apt comparison. Reagan had multiple heart attacks while in office and Dodge was born a Kenyan Muslim.

  9. I noticed this on the thread which Harry has titled "Where Are They Now?" It's at the bottom of the profiles of Coach Bliel and Coach Bugar (who are both at Texas State). If you click on these...it takes you to prices. They have game jerseys from all their sports. I wish we had the opportunity to purchase actual UNT game jerseys: http://www.txstatebobcats.com/store/jerseys/?partner_id=12058

  10. Why are they sooooooooo snobby? They think their poop smells like roses. How come they never let me sit with them in the lunchroom and date all those other skanks instead of me. Let's face it, we are their bottom b!+<#. It sucks but we just aren't that pretty in our adolescent 15th year back in D1. It's allright though, don't cry yourself to sleep staring at your Justin Bieber and Tim Tebo posters. In 10 years we will develope and mature and get a ton of plastic surgery, then we will be to hot for their ass and they will get to watch us go on dates with all their friends. You just wait.

  11. After playing for both men I believe they are both extreemly skilled football minds, just on two complete extreems of the spectrum. They both have their flaws though, and have suffered because of them. I would like to argue the comment that dickey lacked skilled qb's though. Scott Hall or Andrew Smith could have run dodges offense better than anyone he's recruited or played so far. But for the sake of my Alma mater I hope to god we win some games this year! Go Mean Green!!!

  12. "Step on in the recruit'n trailer junior. Watch out for the exposed propane tank line. And please excuse the smell, we have an appointment with roto-rooter to come clean out the septic tank next week. Now, how do you feel about play'n for the Ragin Cajuns?"

  13. Maybe this is something that could be offered in the fan shop which we'll have at the new stadium. One has to think that a #5 jersey for example....might fetch a pretty decent amount.

  15. From a purely selfish standpoint: gimme UTSA expansion. I don't really care if they are good for the Belt or not. I don't really care if it is smart on their part. I like the Texas rivalry, and because of the student population and the ties to the 7th largest city in the nation, I think we can have an actual rivalry. As cool as Tx St is in party-schoolness, and as worthy as all the arguments make them seem to be, UTSA is already Big time college basketball. They are more big time in my mind than TX St is. I don't want another Denton-like city, or a UNT-like team. I like the variety and the closeness. Plus, we get to beat on one of UT's little brothers and that is close enough to beating UT in my book. 16. Did UNT ever make an offer to him during the normal recruiting process?

  17. What an absolute joke. That's embarrassing. It goes to show you how far North Texas has come in facilities since RV arrived in town, and with the completion of the new stadium (and adding a nice baseball facility/program) it won't even be close in the Sun Belt.

  18. This deal on signing the bouncebacks with an off the field history is touch and go to say the least. I think at Troy with the academics the way they are, Coach Blakney has a shot at anyone and doesn't really care who they bring in. Now, when they get onto campus at Troy they seem to take care of their stuff, go to class, and obviously play good football. Someone made a good point about conference expansion. I'd guarantee you that Troy is not high on any radar screens. As for bouncebacks and UNT, it's a balancing act for Dodge and his program. The academics at NT are certainly better and more established than those at Troy. With the recent APR issues, the football staff is careful with who they select in the recruiting process. They can't take too big of risks; but at the same time you have to give kids opportunities. Everyone was so excited about William Cole being on UNT's campus. I was one of them. The bottom line with William was that his off the field record was very clean. His performance in the classroom was very poor, and that came back to bite us. But, in that instance did Dodge and them do the right thing in giving him a chance? Absolutely, no questions asked. Now look at DJ Jones out of Denison. Got in some trouble with the law. Academics are good enough for NCAA requirements. If you evaluate the situation and find out he was guilty by association, and seems sincere about everything; why not give him a shot? Dodge and his staff have worked hard to raise the efficacy of the football program in terms of academics and off the field issues; and have done a great job. There's no reason to sacrifice the fundamental principles that your program is built on and take a flyer on a super talented kid with a tainted past. Now, the Elder kid that Troy signed. Yeah, he may be an absolute force on the field. I would not take that risk personally if I were Dodge and them. You don't want a renegade program with kids getting in trouble all of the time in my opinion; and if you take too many Elder types you could end up being in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

  19. Yes, if he is interested in coming to UNT, I'd definitely be in favor of giving him a second chance. However, it's very doubtful he'd consider UNT, even in his current situation. D.J. Jones was the workhorse in the Denison HS football team in 2008 and 2009. He rushed for over 5,000 yards in 2 1/2 seasons and added an additional 600 yards receiving for a combined 75 TDs. If I recall correctly, he also had several punt and/or kick-off returns for TDs. He was rated 4 stars/5.8, ranked #27 RB in the nation and 48 best player in Texas by Rivals. In addition to his offer by A&M, he had offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Kansas, SMU and Texas Tech. I really wish we could have signed his backfield companion, Denison HS QB Jordan Taylor, last year, but he signed with Rice. Taylor would have given us leverage for Jones. I think it's funny how someone inevitably poses the question about every transfer and/or player that is kicked off a team in the fashion of would/should we accept this player - and no offense to you Marty - it's a legitimate question. I just think we're delusional to think we're in a position to turn away 4-star prospects because of misdemeanors and/or character flaws. We should be so lucky to have D.J. Jones want to come to UNT. Unless a kid has committed a felony, has a history of severe substance abuse and/or has serious personality flaws, I don't think there's any question that UNT should welcome any 5, 4, or even 3-star football prospects with open arms. Remember, these are 17 and 18 year old kids. They're going to make mistakes. We all have. God knows I've made my share. I just thank Him that none of my mistakes were too severe. My parents went to Denison HS so I pay a good deal of attention to their football team. I saw D. J. play a few times and he is an awesome athlete. I can't speak to his character because I didn't follow the team closely enough to know all those details but he did seem to get along well with his team mates and coaches.

  22. 1. We don't need to expand. 2. If we did, why UTSA? Have you bought into all of the hype? Their coach took one of, if not, the best football programs in the US and made it a .500 team. They are hyped by a small number of trolls on a few conference boards. They have a glorified OFF CAMPUS stadium. Their first football schedule isn't one that will bring fans. 3. Academic wise, UTSA accepts roughly 90% of applicants. That alone speaks miles. 4. Are they strong in any sports? Nope.

  23. Okay, I understand that the spelling and grammar may rarely exceed the level of what we find on gmg.com. But "utterly devoid of reality"? C'mon. That's at least hyperbole, if not slander. Here is one of Tobi Writes' articles for Bleacher Report. You may not agree with his conclusions, but where is the factual error?

  24. Dickey didn't really win--he had 3 winning seasons out of 9. Dodge hasn't come even close to finishing wihtin miles of .500. They both have been severe disappointments in my mind. It doesn't always have to be a comparison between the two. Neither have really fit at UNT, for different reasons. Really, other than Fry and Corky Nelson, no coach has had much success at UNT of significant note over the last 35 years or so. But, in their defense, the administration, alumni, and students didn't really help on this until the last 8 years or so.

  31. I know it's way early to be asking this but is there a season ticket owner who knows for certain they won't be using their tickets to the K-state game? My next door neighbor is a Wildcat (yes, actually has a degree from there...what a concept) and has the game triple circled on his calendar. Anyone care to help a guy out?

  38. I was thinking the same thing. Let the K-State guy buy his own tickets and give your UNT seats to a member of the Mean Green Nation who might need them. Just saying.....if the guy is that good of a neighbor/friend buy the tickets for him from UNT. Let's get UNT season ticket holder tickets into the hands of UNT fans. Really.......K-State guy wants free tickets?????

  39. One difference between you and me is that I always look on the positive things that happen, not the bad things. Last year NT had 5 transfers and 2 are still listed on our current roster...LB Julian Herron from SMU (5* rating by Max Emfinger 2* by Rivals coming out out HS) and WR Tyler Stradford from University of Oklahoma (3*by Rivals coming out of HS) Both will get playing time this year... Another thing NT is good at is late recruiting well after signing day has passed. Last year: 1. OG Keenan Flax, 2. SDE La Christopher Anyiam, Allen HS, 3. JC LB Sean January Scottsdale AZ CC and 4. DE KC OBI from Mission Hills CA...who played last year. Flax, Anyiam and January as well as OBI are all still on the roster. All 4 are quality signees. This year NT already sined a late Tight end..Tanner Smith from FW Nolan HS.

  40. I think you can give your guest a pair of tickets, but you should steal his lawnmower and sell it on Craigslist. Take the money and donate it to the Mean Green Club. That'll teach him to have gone to college somewhere else!
