Because we played in Fouts and UTSA is nothing more than a glorified 1AA at this time. Some of these games will never happen and those that do are done so because it allows these teams visibility in Texas, one of, if not the best, recruiting states in the nation. I bet we can attract a few of these to Denton when the new stadium opens.4 points

I think we can and will too. Our new stadium will make a huge difference in what we offer as a road trip, and for high school playoff games too. Think of all the potential future students and parents of those students who will visit Denton, see the stadium and have a whole different outlook on UNT than when they were greeted with Fouts.3 points

Who are these people that watch FCS football and think it's FBS??? After Jethro takes the family for a drive, they plan to go for a swim in the cement pond and watch some Texas State FBS playoff football on the picture box.2 points

29 turnovers says that it sure wasn't part of the solution.2 points

Easy. I mean, beating freaking Alabama really turned things around for ULM... really put 'em on the map, raised their profile, and got Weatherbie moving in the right direc........ ummm...2 points

Time to check the "30 day waiting period" off your GMG bingo card. I have this, conference realignment, free space, helmet discussion and am crossing my fingers the adopt-a-player thread comes up before someone else wins. The grand prize: Season tickets to Fouts in 2011.2 points

I disagree. Under normal situations this may be correct, but these are extraordinary circumstances. We have a coach that has had nothing except three miserable seasons at North Texas that has been challenged to win this year or be cut loose. He has to win at least six games, probably seven to retain his job. I think this is very generous on the part of Rick V as I believe very few AD's would have given a coach a fourth season to show improvement. Why have the short list? Rick Villarreal has to be prepared to do what's best for North Texas. If North Texas starts the season 2-6, you need to be able to then announce that a change will be made at the end of the season and post the position. Remember, that the position needs to posted for a full month before Rick can officially offer it to somebody, and we would want that coach to be hired immediately after the season. That way the new coach could evaluate current players and coaches before assembling his staff and starting recruiting. All this said, I hope the short list isn't needed as I hope Todd Dodge achieves the success at North Texas that I believe he's capable of attaining.2 points

I'd say FAU is free to talk as much trash as they want, too. Not Western Kentucky, though. SCOREBOARD.2 points

Don't get me wrong... A win over Oklahoma would be HUGE, and would definitely get this thing off to a great start. But if I had to choose between six wins or a bowl game... I'd rather see us in the bowl. Especially if it means beating SMU, too. Such optimistic days... We were all so young and foolish then.2 points

You'd prefer that all teams in the conference stay status quo facilities wise? Don't be an idiot. I'll say it again. Good for FAU. Good for the Belt.1 point

Odus Mitchell took over the North Texas program in 46 after North Texas had not fielded a team from 43 to 45 (essentially a death penalty). His first four years were, 7-3-1, 10-2 (with a bowl game), 6-4, and 8-4. And the very under funded Corkey Nelson won a SLC championship in his second year and went to the playoffs. I quit expecting "improvement" after the second year of our current coaching "era".1 point

You know...on roadtrips as a child I remember seeing ULM's crappy stadium (it impressed me at the time)....bottom line is I always remembered Monroe LA because when we headed east we always saw that stadium and I always thought some big team played there. Now imagine how kids and anyone who enters the Metroplex from 35 will feel? A great first impression??? I would say so.1 point

First off, I too hope Dodge is extremely successful this year and for many to come at North Texas. But, can someone please explain the above to me? It seems Tech fired Leach and had Tuberville hired in no time. Is this correct and if so, why do we have to post the job for 30 days prior to filling the position?1 point

We'll see. 4 & 8 sounds about right. Maybe 5 & 7. Never really could get on board with all the Dodge ball hype, so If Mr. Todd Dodge is gone I won't be surprised. I'm am more surprised that Gary DeLoach's defensive teams haven't been better of late. It's always been my belief that Mr. Deloach was the best, if not one of the best coaches on any staff we've had at UNT. I've heard Mr. Deloach doesn't like in home recruiting visits, but I could be off base on that also. I know this team won't do much better than 4 & 8 if the defense doesn't show up. Mr. Dodge's system sure does keep the defense out on the field a lot. I think that might be as big a factor in our defensive woe's as anything else also. Dickey may have run the draw a lot, but at times the defense was able to rest a little. The Rice game a couple of years ago was 77 to 20 and could have been 100 to 20, so we'll know by the second week of the season what our team's looking like. Rice had some decent talent that year also. Maybe they won't be as tough this time around. If they are our season is going to get ugly quick.1 point

I would much rather win our conference than beat Clemson or Kansas State.1 point

I'd like for every blessed one to have a monster year but if I have to single one out I'll pick Tyler Stradford. If he's successful that should mean that the passing game, especially the deep routes, is successful. It also gives a little "in your face" satisfaction for being stiffed by OU, denied a year of competition by the NCAA, and showing everyone that he has decent hands to go along with his blazing speed.1 point

I believe making it to a bowl game shows that we are a better program overall and will do better in the long run. Sure, beating Clemson or K-State would be great, but what if it was only 1 of 3 wins next season? Didn't ULL beat K-State last season? I'd rather be MTSU than ULL right now.1 point

DODGE MUST WIN 7 GAMES this season to return in 2011. the real problem is that whoever is coach next year must rebuild a team that has done nothing past 3 seasons, and is projected to achieve little this year. i see no light at end of tunnel.0 points

It is obviously a big enough deal (AlamoDome) that BCS teams are scheduling to visit San Antonio and play the non-existent team from UTSA instead of San Marcos up the road with a long time program. I don't know, you tell me what's the difference and why? And why can't Virginia, Ariz, Az St., Colo St, et al visit Denton home/home against our FBS program? Something in this situation smells like a RiverWalk, er fishy.0 points

I question whether the defense AND the special teams will show improvement this year. All this excitement about Canales seems to ignore the fact that the offense wasn't the problem last year, everything else was. Unless Deloach becomes much more aggresive (which has never been in his nature) to cover for a poor pass rush, I just don't see from where the improvement comes. Everyone ignores special teams, at least until the opposition is blocking field goals, extra points, and punts at will. Huge part of the game that a Dodge coached UNT team has never even been close to performing on a college level. Will they this year? Hope so, but history says they won't.0 points

---The old WAC admiited a lot of teams then realized the mistake and left and formed the Mountain West. The Mountain West is pretty the old WAC minus UTEP but with TCU instead. The Mountain West did not exist until then. ---To call that a promotion is not understanding what really happened.....0 points

It's obvious San Antonio as a destination is the draw. Much like Orlando, it is a good road trip for fans and players plus a recruiting hotbed for coaches. I would expect UNT soon to be on their schedule sometime in the near future too. As a UNT fan when looking at easy roadtrip travel and fun, I'd pick San Antonio over any current SBC destination. UTSA will be pushed up into the FBS if for no other reason just because of their location and facility at that location. I believe the scheduled teams want to go to San Antonio (a vacation road trip). I wouldn't be surprised if CUSA was watching their progress very closely.-1 points

The new coach to go with the new stadium is the best thing that is going to happen to the team this season.-1 points

Personally, I believe that a win over Clemson or K-State would make a much larger impact on our recruiting than going to a lower tier bowl game. We will eventually get the win over Goliath, we just need more rocks for our slingshots.-1 points

Shocking FLF's post is non-responsive and DDAL's post lacks a warrant or support for his argument.-1 points

Shhhhhhh. It's easier to ignore the short field the defense had to defend or the momentum crushing INT's or fumbles (especially the ones in the redzone).-1 points

I also think equal credit needs to be given to Chris Burke from Life Goes On for the masterful job he's done teaching them his "grab your genitals and run like they are on fire" approach to baserunning.-1 points
