  7. He knows it's not parallel. The issue with alcohol isn't the consumption; it's with the way people act when they are drunk from the consumption. Meat doesn't intoxicate, no matter how good it smells. It's good to know the Rangers gives slices of the ballpark to families. However, I've sat in enough "family" sections at various places to know that such designation doesn't free your experience from the drunk sports idiots.

  8. I don't consider attendance at an amateur college athletic event on the same par as a professional sports event. I fully understand alcohol will be available at pro sporting events. I rarely attend them, and their service of alcohol is part of the reason. Drunk rednecks cussing out loud at an umpire is no more charming to me and my kids than the drunk idiots at a college football game. The merely presence of families doesn't make something by default family friendly. Further, a child enjoying an activity doesn't by default make that activity family friendly. I'm sure my boy child would enjoy taking a match and burning a building down. That doesn't make the act of arson family friendly. I disagree with Six Flags' alcohol policy and have not taken my family there since they began serving. The State Fair is attended by families, but I don't consider it family friendly anyway. I've never been the Schlitterbahn; but, if they advertise to families with young kids and serve alcohol, then I won't be going there with my family. Remember, I wrote that it was "refreshing" that UNT was family friendly. I didn't write that all events, organizations, or companies that claim to be family friendly are family friendly. The reason UNT games are refreshing in that regard is that they do seem to me to walk the walk on family friendliness, while most other who make the claim do not - in my opinion. I fully understand the rest simply lie about it, not caring what my kids may see or hear once I pay the full price of admission and enter. Before I had a family, I could care less and would likely have been the one drinking at a game. Things have changed 180 degrees for me since I've had kids and begun to take them to various public events. It has opened my eyes to many things and situations that I used to ignore. Let the drunks drink in the parking lot - and stay there.

  10. Tech draws well in Lubbock and away and alsohas a pretty good TV draw. Of course Tech doesn't draw as well as UT but certainly is light years ahead of Baylor. Note there is no BU-UT or BU-OU games listed. Tech has a bigger fan base in the DFW area and I would suspect they have higher viewer ratings for that area.

  14. Conferences looking to expand don't care about the media markets where the Big 12 universities are located (other then Austin), it's DFW, Houston, and San Antonio where the majority of their viewers are watching. In all four of the major Texas markets (Austin, DFW, Houston, & San Antonio) UT reigns as king. However, when you look past the horns, it's Texas Tech that brings in more TV sets then the other Big 12 teams. In Austin, DFW, and San Antonio, Texas Tech is only behind UT in terms of viewers. Texas A&M and LSU bring in more viewers in Houston than Tech, but A&M has less viewers than Tech in the other three major Texas markets. Bottom line: Texas Tech outdraws the other Big 12 universities on TV, other than UT who's leaps ahead of everyone.

  15. People seem to forget all the positive publicity that NT was getting back when we were winning the Sunbelt in football in the early part of the decade. It was better/similar to the talk that Troy and MT get now for being "up and comers" & being attractive candidates to other conferences. All we need to do is focus on winning the games on our schedule, regardless of who they are against. The formula was working in the early part of the decade...now marry that with the $100 million in facilites upgrades, emerging as a power in SBC men's hoop, and marked improvement across the board in our non revenue sports, and suddenly UNT becomes a program that is very attractive to other conferences. SBC or WAC. It will make no difference.
    1 point
  16. Actually what you are saying is your vision of UNT is of being a tick that sucks the blood of the host to survive. Since the Sun Belt's growth is dependent on schools finally winning some non-conference games and not being one in done in the NCAA Tournament, you want to find a slightly fatter dog to live off of while not doing anything fundamentally required to be a dog rather than a tick.

  17. Yeah, that was a good call back then. We were never going to make it anywhere with the likes of Tulsa, Louisville, Cincinatti, and Memphis as our conference mates. Fry bet the farm and lost, but he wasn't around to pay the price for the ensuing 23 years. He moved on to bigger and better things while NT had its athletics set back a quarter of a century.

  18. Especially Kansas. The Pac-12 didn't want Colorado on its own, they wanted CU to get TEXAS. Colorado might be better off in the Pac-12 because they have a great many alumni on the West Coast and the "culture" is more suited to that part of the country (which means lacksidasial toward football) but the Pac-12 doesn't get much out of CU. Colorado has a struggling football program, a DOA basketball program and no baseball at all. The vaunted Denver TV market is diverse and would just as soon watch Air Force or Texas as CU. Tommy Tuberville was a bad hire. Eat it Texas Tech.

  21. “I don’t think this conference will last long because there is too much disparity between all the teams,” Tuberville told host Bill King. “In the SEC, for instance, Vanderbilt makes as much money in the television contract as Florida. Everybody is good with it. Everybody is on the same page. Everyone gets the same votes. “That doesn’t happen here in the Big 12. We have some teams that get a little bit more money and have a little it more stroke than some of the other teams. And when that happens, you’re gonna have teams looking for better avenues to leave and reasons to leave. I like Tuberville. He's already coached in a tougher conference. He's already figured out the pettiness of UT, OU, and A&M and sees that they will eat the conference for the sake of money. Funny, the SEC gives everyone the same money - and, the competition is better. OU and Texas snare most of the Big 12 money - and, they can't beat SEC teams in big games. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Tuberville may have Tech winning the Big 12 South in his first season. The two defensive coordinators he sent over to Texas completely shut down OU's five year win streak and started delivering titles to Texas for a change. One is in line to replace Mack. Tuberville is a good coach. Stoops and Mack will hate the competition. Look for both to have lame excuses (officiating, wind, etc.) when Tech beats them.

  24. I have a feeling that expansion takes off much more next year than it did this current year. When the Pac-10 went to 12 this year (and was willing to go to 16) I feel as if we will see a glut of 12-team conferences. Somehow, with the Big 10/12, SEC and Pac-12 at 12 teams, and a little less potent ACC also at 12, it may become necessary for an AQ team to be in a 12-team conference. First, I believe that the Big XII will add two more next year. As long as Texas/Texas A&M/Texas Tech and Oklahoma/Oklahoma State remain together, that conference will no doubt remain an AQ conference. Someone jokingly said that they could add SFA and still retain AQ status and that's only a little far-fetched. While I'd expect the two additions to come from the MWC, I'd expect that it could be from any conference IF they thought that the team would be a player in a couple of years. By player I mean very competitive and potentially draw 50,000 average per game. The Big East could face extinction as a football conference if they fail to act. The best case scenario for their four teams would be Notre Dame, East Carolina, UCF and Memphis. All are capable of 40,000 averages and of course Notre Dame sells out every game at 80,000. If they can somehow sell the Irish, who are already a member for their other sports, on full membership they will absolutely keep their AQ status. Those actions would give all six AQ conferences 12 teams each and possibly freeze further expansion by the big boys. If that happens, I believe that CUSA returns to 12 and the Mountain West also moves to 12. If the two Big XII fill-ins do come from the MWC that would mean five new schools added along with the three from CUSA that must come from the WAC or Sun Belt because no one in the MAC stands out from the rest except maybe Central Michigan. Some very likely candidates are Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, North Texas, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, Troy, and Temple but none are shoo-ins except Fresno. If the above happened that would leave 10 teams (excluding Army and Navy) who must band together but they could be scattered from California to Florida and either the WAC or the Sun Belt would have to go. Even if only part of this scenario happened, North Texas must win and have our best attendance average. If we fail at either we will put the program at great risk.

  25. When we show the ability to 1) execute an extra point consistently and 2) keep an opponent from blocking punts at will, then I will believe a 3rd place finish. Hate to say it, but it hasn't happened in the last 3 years, so your gonna have to prove it to me this year. THen, maybe we can move on to the defensive line and other, more complex, things.

  26. I heard that North Texas could have met the requirements since we were using Texas Stadium as our home facility for many games with Fry but after he left the paperwork was not filed in time and the administration in 1980 wouldn't fight it (didn't mind seeing athletics become less prominent since Fry had left). We were basically demoted to 1-AA because of an office snafu and lack of desire from the university administration then.

  29. The next step is for Denia to find its Avi Adelman. Hopefully, he won't be bitter enough to start stalking tailgates to take photos of people who stop to pee on a shrub or bush like Avi does on St. Patrick's Day in Greenville, but you never know. I just don't want to get pepper-sprayed right before the Houston game.

I was hotrodding my old minibike up and down the streets near my girlfriend's house when a guy who claimed to be from the neighborhood association flagged me down and told me I had to quit cause it was loud, illegal, and smoked too much. Needless to say I flipped him the bird, did a couple figure 8s in his yard and tore outta there.

  32. Except for before that in the 3rd paragraph he names them correctly. You're saying he forgot what schools he was talking about?? More realistically he probably thought the readers were smart enough to put 2 and 2 together. Maybe you should write him and tell him you're not so next time to spell out the school in it's entirety.

  34. No. If athletics are a "window to the university," do we really want people peeking in to see a bunch of rowdy drunks? The University of North Texas is trying to improve its image, and reinforcing stereotypes of drunken college students will not help matters. Even college fraternity houses have universally gone dry.

  35. Did we play all but two or less home games in Texas Stadium during the 1981 season. If no, then no matter who you talked to, we could not count Texas Stadium as our primary home stadium. Did we average 17,000 a year from 1978 through 1981? If no, then we since we could not call Texas Stadium our home stadium we could not have qualified for 1A status. I know we didn't come close to averaging 20000 both home and away from 1978 through 1981 so we could not have qualified that way. And we were not members of a conference where at least half of the membership met the 1A requirements. There is a chance that NT intended to file for a waiver to remain 1A and never did that. However, as Arkstfan knows better than I none of the requests for waivers were granted. Thus, filing the request of a waiver would have made no difference. Based on NCAA rules, there is nothing North Texas could have done to stay 1A in 1982. It was completely impossible. Please put the rumor to bed once and for all.

  37. Upon reading and re-reading this thread I've come up with the following conclusions: 1.) You people are delusional. 2.) You guys really need to get out more. The Sun Belt is a joke. The faster people running the show (and the fans) at NT realize that, the better off they'll be. North Texas fans have bitched and moaned for years about the lack of respect North Texas gets on the national scene. Most respect is earned, some is perceived. Athletically, we've done little to earn respect...and, as long as North Texas is a member of the Sun Belt conference, their perceived respect level will continue to hover just above the number zero.
