The WAC gives us a slight chance... the Sun Belt gives us zero chance.4 points

So the coach of Utah says this: Whittingham said that he believes that within three to 10 years, there will be four 16-team super conferences. And people on this board act as if it is an absolute certainty. (4 16-team divisions). Maybe you're right. But I think they kind of went into this round of realignment talks...thinking that as well. And as far as I can tell....we don't even have one 16 team conference. Yet. I'm not saying it won't happen...please. I know how greedy these bastards are. But what the recent realignment talks have proven is: When it's every team for itself.....it's sometimes hard to get anyone to agree.3 points

Any sport that allows a player to fall untouched, lay flat on his back, wait for the stretcher, be carried off, then proceed to jog around the field shaking his teammates hands after being replaced on the field with the clock running is pure stupidity.2 points

The WAC would be expensive. It would be hard to travel. But that's what comes with moving up the ladder. We have to put every conference on notice that we are NOT content with sitting around in the Sun Belt playing the LaLa's and LaMo's. We want to be better than that, and we have the resources to do so by tapping into our new fee, large student population, and large alumni base. Let's not waste our time any longer. It's the WAC, C-USA, or down the drain to FCS.2 points

First of all, I look forward to you watching a North Texas football game in the new stadium, and seeing a winning season (hopefully with some significant wins) at least one more time. However, I wonder if you regard College Football as even remotely pure and/or unsullied in how it goes about it's business. I ask this because I was watching a movie the other day on Turner Classic Movies called "Saturday's Heroes". It was made in 1937!, and while some of the dialogue was pretty corney by our standards, I was suprised to hear issues being discussed in that movie that are still relevant today. It was kind of like watching the 1939 version of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"....a very good (and relevant even to this day) primer on politics. The main character, who is a football star (Van Heflin) augments his "ship" and stipend by scalping tickets. He talks to his school administrators about how college football is a big business that's making a lot of money for the colleges, and so they should share the profits with the players. He also talks about the lack of time in which to go to class (traveling by train to big games), so his school's promise of a education to him and his team mates is just a sham. He also calls college football "semi-pro". All this put me in mind of a discussion I had back in the 70's with a Harvard grad who went to the same HS as me. He told me that the Ivy League schools made the decision to get out of the semi-pro sports game sometime in the 50's. He said that they made this decision because they didn't think that college sports should be a business. To me, the government getting involved in college sports is no different than financial regulation for wall street, or setting safety/health standards for legalized prostitution in Nevada.1 point

Proposed by who? This dream division, everyone kepts writing about; could just as easily happen as part of the Belt. Why does anyone think that teams in Hawaii, California, Nevada, Utah and Idaho want a Texas centered division? Miami is much closer than 5 of the 8 WAC members. Going to Reno every year would have to be mixed with Moscow, Fresno, Logan, San Jose and Manoa.1 point

A friend sent this to me. I hadn't heard anything about it. Figured I would share with those who might want to get in on this in the last couple of hours. Hey., a good reason to tailgate: June 24, 2010 Dear UNT community, I'm excited to tell you that the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee invited the renowned UNT Symphony Orchestra to play at XLV Countdown: Live from Cowboys Stadium presented by Frito-Lay. The event, which features a special concert by Tim McGraw, will celebrate 50 years of Dallas Cowboys history and culminate the Kick-Off Concert Series for North Texas' first Super Bowl. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10. In recognition of this honor, the UNT community may participate in an exclusive ticket pre-sale that allows us to buy tickets today, two days before they are available to the general public. The UNT community will have the opportunity to buy tickets in the pre-sale from 10 a.m. today to 10 p.m. Friday. Tickets will range from $25 to $65 with a majority of the seating costing $25. To buy tickets, visit http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0C0044CFAC156FA2. The password is UNT. This is something the entire UNT community can be proud of and excited for, as it recognizes our prestige as a renowned music school and our significance in the North Texas community. UNT is the only university invited to participate, and I know the 90-piece orchestra will give an extraordinary performance in this one-of-a-kind setting. In addition to joining Tim McGraw for part of his performance, UNT's orchestra will perform works commissioned by the NFL to accompany films highlighting Dallas Cowboys history and Emmitt Smith's August induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Concertgoers also will be able to hear pianist Van Cliburn perform the National Anthem. If you can't make it to the event, you can volunteer to be part of preparations for the Feb. 6 Super Bowl XLV. I hope you all will be there at the countdown live event to cheer on the orchestra and add your Mean Green pride to the Dallas Cowboys celebration. Sincerely, V. After guiding UTA to a 16-0 season and 2 trips to the NCAA, how did Donna Capps NOT get the NT job ? Too much money ? Too many demands ? Corner office with a window ? Oh what might have...nevermind.1 point

A Bleacher Report thread about WAC realignment? You're yelling at the dog for taking a dump in the cat's litter box.1 point

Why not? Both Sam and SFA have traditionally better athletic programs than UTSA and TSUSM. I don't blame teams for moving up, but I am afraid all its going to do is as the FB numbers mount is to hasten the Big Boys to try to drop a lot of bottom tier programs. As self serving and undemocratic as it is, I hope the NCAA stops this flow of teams moving up.1 point

First off, Benson made it seem likely that the WAC will be an 8 team league for the 2011 season. When he talked about potential candidates he mentioned Texas State and UT San Antonio when discussing Texas teams. UNT had to be brought up by the radio host and then he included them in the convo. He also made a point to include Sac State when the host mentioned Davis and Poly. He also downplayed Montana by saying that they really aren't in the WAC footprint. --------------------------------------------- http://forums.scout.com/themes/scout2/post.aspx?s=451&f=2368&t=6065595&m=78776970"e=1 Benson was on ESPN radio and UNT was not the hot topic. I think the Texas Trio described by the Bleacher report blog sounds solid but has UNT already lost out.1 point

Yes, NT took over 10,000 to UT once. As TSUSM will find out that after a few beatings in away home games, the crowds will dwindle in a hurry. Clue, NT and TSUSM have been in the same conference before, neither team traveled remotely well; do you really think that is going to change if both are fb division? As far as the WAC, I don't think many want to go East. They would be ecstatic if La Tech found another home. I doubt that the WAC expands unless they find a suitable candidate in the West or lose several more teams which would make them even less attractive.1 point

Well like I said It would be nice to see TXST and UNT in the same conference. I hope we (TXST) are invited to the WAC and if we are on of the first teams I hope to see in San Marcos is UNT. I know that if we had a chance to play in Denton we would bring 5-6K to the game. Ask the Baylor, Rice and TCU fans we Bobcats show up in force to TX FBS games.1 point

I just talked to some high level officials at UNT. We're closing the school, as of Monday......because some jackass on a sports message board posted comments from another sports message board jackass, about us being left behind. It's been nice. UNT 1890-2010.-1 points

We had a hell of a run. Hey, Texas State.... YOU. ARE. AN. FCS. SCHOOL. Any talk about you being invited to ANY FBS conference is ridiculous. The WAC will aggressively pursue UNT, Arkansas State, and the Louisiana-City universities before they even think of considering dipping down to FCS.-1 points

That's easy - they don't have any actual football to talk about! How about those 4 winning seasons since the mid-80s?-1 points

UTSA already has Baylor on a future schedule. The SBC is not our problem --being competitive on the field with the SBC is the UNT problem. Until we can get the $$ to compete we will continue to get kicked by TROY (whom we are light years behind from a competitive standpoint), FAU (never ever been beaten by NT), MTSU who hired a coach that has kicked our rears ever year since, etc. Criticize the SBC if you must, just remember whose bringing up the rear in the SBC when you criticize.-1 points
