Meh...same old, tired rhetoric...but at least you guys are starting to show a bit of creativity and intelligence. I read that poem in 2nd grade, but keep at it and give me a call when you Obama-fy some Basho, Berryman or Alighieri.5 points

Honestly, this is a sad story, and not because of what Tony Mitchell has done, but what has been done for him. Where are the adults in this whole story? His parents/guardians, the administrators at that "school" in Florida that can't even spell the word education correctly, the coaches and administrators within DISD that have just let this go, etc...? Tony Mitchell is a kid. A kid with an obviously immense talent for playing basketball that has had his life handed to him on a silver platter. He is a teenager that has done what most teenagers would do in this situation, play ball and skip school, with absolutely no consequences for his actions. He will be another in a long line of young athletes that had "adults" tell them how awesome they were and how they would make it in the pros only to have these adults turn their backs on them when they flunk out of school, get busted for drugs, get busted for taking money from a booster, suffer a career ending injury, etc... This young man will be lucky to have a job in 5-10 years and will have nothing to fall back on. Sad,sad story.3 points

4 conferences, 64 teams. I'm guessing the "playoff" we've always wanted is coming in a form involving only these 4 conferences. The have nots are being phased out faster than an almond joy in the cafeteria at fat camp.2 points

Not any worse than being in a conference that is going to take South Alabama, a school that has never even had a football program before last year; and has already taken an FCS football school in the last 2 years (WKU). I'd rather be in a conference that has had some BCS busting schools in it with some regional new additions that parallel USA and WKU's circumstances.2 points

Yes, it's just one start. In the grand scheme of things, it's not worth a lot. That said, only one other pitcher has K'd 14 Pirates in a game in the last 1,000 games (Lincecum). Likewise, NO PITCHER WHO HAS EVER LIVED has 14 K's and 0 BB's in their debut. NO ONE. In fact, since 1900, only a staggering FIVE pitchers have ever garnered such a line in any game: Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Javy Vazquez, Mike Mussina, and Brad Penny. Now, add a 21 year old kid in his MLB debut to that list. Absolutely unimaginable. DC is on the map. They're selling out. They're a road draw. They're selling jerseys faster than they can make them. This is the rare huge budget sports signing that has MORE than financially paid off for the club in question - and it's a 21 year old who has played one game. His arm may fall off tomorrow, but he's a superstar today. Unreal, and I'm not challenging it.1 point

I just don't see that as a nightmare scenario. We are already in a conference at least a notch below SMU, and another notch below TCU. UNT being in a conference including UTEP, Tulsa, La Tech, and Rice would be better than what we have now. No, it wouldn't be an ideal scenario without at least one of the other Metroplex teams, but I don't see it as a nightmare either.1 point

Considering this is a 4 year average, a 16 point swing is pretty significant.1 point

Since the last time he was in Denton, I believe we've added the Chemistry and Wellness buildings as well as a new dorm. We're almost done with the Life Sciences Complex. We've built/renovated several sports facilities including the softball & soccer fields and Waranch, and started construction on both the new Business building and, of course, the stadium. I'm not sure what La. Tech has done in the past five years, but I doubt it can even hold a candle to what's being done on our campus. Also, when was the last time that anyone we'd be competing against in our move has been to the NCAA tournament, much less twice within the past four years?1 point

Sounds like the dam is about to break. What a ride it is about to be, I hope we end up in better conference situation. So much for the big 12 may it rest in peace.1 point

I didn't realize that Texas State provoked this type of reaction out of the the UNT fanbase. We are just trying to cut our path, and make ourselves better, like every other team in the nation. We're pumping new money into our program, and upgrading all of our facilities with the hopes that someone will be interested in what we have to offer. As for the name, from what I have read, you guys could have had it if you would have stayed in the Texas State System.1 point
-
It only has a regional implication because we haven't done anything to change that implication. WIN. WIN when it matters (games against Big 6, top 25, and bowl competition). WIN consistently. Do those three things and your name could be University of Northeast Northern Most Texas. Everyone would know it.1 point

Yes, sort of reminds me of when we broke in Sam Bradford at OU in TDodge's first game.1 point

Because San Antonio is behind UTSA with its $$. It knows the multiplier effect of D-1 football on the local economy unlike some dumb a__es in the Denton community. Arlington committed $400 million on the come to get Jerry's World. It's time this berg woke up to the potential that surrounds its major employer.1 point

That still doesn't excuse the double standard of people whining over us being referred to as NTSU. I happen to like North Texas!1 point
-
Not really. Texas State was one name we considered. University of North Texas was the name we wanted in the early 60's when we got saddled with NTSU. The name change in 1988 included some discussions about the Texas St. name, but we put forth UNT as our choice (I was a student leader at the time and actually was polled personally about that choice - I chose the University of North Texas option because we have been and always will be "North Texas"). Back to the topic of discussion - I think the SWTSUSM is a great alphabet soup and love those who use it. I personally refuse to ever call them Texas State. They are Texas State University at San Marcos (TSU-SM). To call them anything else implies that they are somehow the flagship of the Texas State System (which doesn't have one).1 point

Using Baylor's arguments, the only logical solution is to form a Texas Conference of all the current Texas FBS schools so that all that money stays in Texas. All in favor say "Aye".1 point
-
I agree...a service academy team, be it Army, navy or Air Force, would be a great way to open the new stadium...flyover guaranteed, parachute drop perhaps, uniforms all over the place, etc., etc. Ready made hype for the game and a really nice draw. So many promo's could be developed around it as well... GO MEAN GREEN!1 point

Pardon me if I don't grant him superstar status after ONE MAJOR LEAGUE START. A franchise record for a 5 year old expansion franchise is hardly impressive. What was the old strike out record? 8? Best curveball in baseball? After one start? Again, pardon me if I wait until he completes one month as a starter before I annoint him the next Nolan Ryan. Not saying the kid is not a talent (although what happened to that 106 MHP fastball he was throwing at the college level? The guy that operated the radar gun must have been the same guy that measured Riley's height), but lets just let him prove himself (and stay healthy) before we start massaging his prostate.0 points
-
The guy had a year long build up to his 1st start. Had his minor league outings shown on the MLB network. Set a franchise record for strikeouts in his 1st big league start, and doing so in 94 pitches. His book is a 97-101 fastball and the best curveball in baseball at the age of 21. Will he have a rough outing every now and again?? Sure. But to say he is not a superstar is laughable.0 points

AMEN! And with the "North Texas" identity, no one should confuse us with the soon to be oil fouled coastal areas of "South Texas".0 points

Ignore the Elephant in the room if you want, but eventually you will have to pay attention when it starts moving your direction! Maybe UTSA is becoming known to the media just based on their constant attitude of "wanting" to be in an FBS conference. And they want to start as high as they can get: ie CUSA or WAC. SunBelt? "No Thanks". Do we appear in the media as "wanting a step up" or would that be too un-PC to say in front of the other SBC wanna-get-outs?0 points

Awesome, just awesome....I love being considered as an equal to a school that has never even played a single down of football. Why does everyone think Larry Coker is a god?0 points
-
I want nothing to do with a conference that is going to take Southwest Texas State University of San Marcos. I want even less to do with a conference that targets UTSA. If that is the direction of the WAC, we don't need it. It could be a good mid-major conference if it picks up Tulsa, UNT, and two of the CUSA schools in Texas (SMU and Houston are my preference).0 points

I make no judgements on this opinion piece from today's Wall Street Journal, but I do think it brings into perspective much of what this president believes and how he reacts and acts...not to mention what his ultimate goals may be. Sparks: Sun Belt can't stay silent in expansion A selected excerpt from the article: The Sun Belt's football members include MTSU, Troy, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Western Kentucky, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas State and South Alabama soon enough. Notice anything missing from that statement? Hellooo??? McFly!! The lack of respect Rodney Dangerfield got is nothing compared to what the once mighty, four-time SBC football champs are getting these days. Let the email barrage begin: Adam Sparks is the MTSU beat writer for The Daily New Journal. E-mail him at sparks@dnj.com.-2 points
