Texas lawmaker to introduce anti-immigration bill similar to Arizona law As someone who has personally navigated the US immigration waters, I feel I have an above-average understanding of immigration policy - US laws, as well as those of many other countries. At the same time, I realize the majority of Americans are ignorant on the subject and attain much of their knowledge on US immigration policy from Hollywood romantic-comedy movies. (No, foreign nationals don't simply obtain US citizenship immediately upon marriage to a US citizen.) It's not easy to get a tourist visa, much less an immigrant visa, for citizens of most countries outside of Europe - those included in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). For that reason, my daughter barely knows her maternal grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins. But, I also don't believe we should allow anyone in the world who wants to come to the US to simply enter undocumented and in unlimited numbers - we'd quickly be overwhelmed. So, from my perspective, simply ignoring the illegal immigration problem on our southern border is not fair to the citizens of other countries who'd like to come to the US, but have no other choice but to do it lawfully. As much as I try, I simply can not fathom why the US federal government is so lenient when it comes to enforcing the immigration laws on our southern border and in our southern states. (Take my word, they are certainly not as lenient when processing paperwork at the US embassies/consulates abroad.) I know of all the common excuses - separating families, working the jobs that typical Americans won't work, afraid of losing votes, etc, etc. However, none of those excuses hold any merit with me. As far as I can tell, the "new (state) law" in Arizona is nothing more than enforcing the federal laws in which enforcement has been neglected by the federal government. And, "showing immigration papers" (as every news source is reporting) can be as simple as showing your state-issued driver's license, because all but nine US states now verify lawful US presence before issuing identification cards/driver's licenses. Even though the Arizona law is not yet in effect (and may never be if the White House administration gets involved), it is already making those unlawfully present in Arizona scatter, just as Oklahoma's 2007 bill did. And, you can rest assured, many of those will make their way to Texas. I am, obviously, happy that similar legislation is being proposed in Texas and will support it.2 points

gangrene, Agreed. My wife is from Mexico and came here legally. And, it isn't easy to come here or stay here legally - even if you are married to a U.S. citizen. Sometimes when her brothers come to visit, they can't bring all of their families because getting the visa paperwork renewed is tedious and precise. And, that's the way it should be. I've got a real problem with people who think a "pathway to citizenship" should be opened to those who came here illegally. Is the government trying to find a way to sell a cars cheaper to auto thieves? If I trespass, does the government try to find a way to give me part of the land I trespass upon? When people are here illegally, they are here illegally. I don't want to put the cart before the horse for anyone here but illegal mean "not legal." Stop me if I'm going too fast. The idea behind the visa is that only people who have jobs and can support themselves in Mexico (or whatever country) can apply for and receive the visa. The assumption is that if they are already making a living in the homeland, they aren't going to try to stay here illegally. And, that makes sense. If another country - insert Mexico here - has an economic/unemployment problems, we should not be the default safety valve to get them out of that government's hair. Arizona's new law aside, the problem always has been - and continues to be - that our stupid government doesn't apply the law already on the books! Why not? If I steal, rape, or murder, they would apply the law to me, and with great measure. So, why not just enforce the laws against people here illegally? It's so damn simple that it's maddening. And, it's costly to States to have to take care of these people while the federal government sits back in Washington, D.C. not giving a crap in most cases and getting in the way of actually enforcing immigration law in others. It is not fair to people like my wife who played by the rules to get here either. I understand the economic situation in Mexico isn't great. But, it's way, way past time for the Mexican government to take care of its own house. But, look at it. It's so corrupt and incompetent that druglords rule whole swaths of the country in the northern parts of the country, and they are making inroads into traditional tourist territories. Mexico needs to privatize many of its industrial sectors - mainly in the areas of energy and technology - and allow it's citizenry to have a shot a developing a true middle class. Everything else is bullsh*t. The American hispanics who foment protest against common sense immigration law are the worst. They are true traitors in every sense of the word. This country gives them more opportunities than they can ever know and all they can do is spit on it. And, spit on those, like my wife, who followed the rules to get here. I know things will get worse before they get better in this endeavor, but I'm all for what Arizona and other Mexican border states do to protect the economic and safety interests of their citizens.2 points

immigration is a touchy issue for me, I have a situation personally where I deal with the subject on a regular basis and believe me it is no fun. I don't have objections with this law as long as it doesn't require you to carry anything other than you ID, which you should already have on you... The real answer to ilegal immigrationis not in ID checks, border patrols, fence building or over excited militia guys patrolling the border. There are two things that need to happen to really even begin to effectively address the issue of illegal immigration: First we need to enforce laws that are on the books and implement the punitive effects that have been written with them. ID checks are a great idea, the racial profiling is definitely a concern but this legislation is at least a start. Second, and most importantly, we need to make it easier to come here legally! People that get here legally often spend 6-12 months going through the various different types of paperwork and approvals needed to even apply for a work / student visa. Once they apply there are separate hoops to jump through to aquire the desired visa and these can take several more months as well. If you successfully complete the first steps and do aquire your visa often times they give you only paperwork saying that you are approved but as you arrive in the country, or if you extend your visa or if you get a new passport from home the visa stamped in your passport goes way and that is needed for everything that you do while you are here. Lets say that you are from the Czech Republic and you are here as a student. Odds are you don't go home very often and if you happen to no longer have the stamp you can't. Immigration and customs do not have to let you back into the country even if you have the proper paperwork. It takes months to even prepare for the trip with the government and even after all that prep you are still not guaranteed to get back in the country. The complexity of the situation is difficult at best to describe, and living through it makes it seem even more complex the trying to sell the Texas Rangers. My point being that if we want real immigration reform then we need to reform and streamline the process for the people that want to be here legally and enforce the laws that we already have to keep those that don't wish to participate out. The entire immigration system here is nuts.2 points

Well Alabama was known as the Crimson Tide before they adopted the White Elephant as a mascot. We had the Eagles as both for a long time.1 point

Right, I definitely know that. And to be perfectly clear, I'm not trying to throw out history, but most athletic media outlets know us as the Mean Green. Going to the well again: not many people refer to Alabama as the "Red Elephants", although they could. They're the Crimson Tide. Just curious...1 point

All the Puerto Ricans I've known (mostly in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division, but now I work next to a Lieutenant from Fire Rescue-he also served in the 82nd) have been hard working people. By the way, Puerto Ricans are already American Citizens. You have some reason for starting this thread, other than attempting to perpetuate some really tired cliches?1 point

Some of the older articles are about football recruits including one I have known for years. He is the first one I did. I have no relationship with North Texas other than I have known Ricky V and ate at his brothers sub shop in Hattiesburg, Miss. I have been to some Eagle games and met some fans. I had a website on the Rivals Network, sold it and retired. Found it boring so thought I would tinker around writing as an independent for North Texas. Why North Texas? Folks things are about to change for your football program and I want to be some part of it. (I have an article already written about it and the conference changes.) Plus, Rivals and Scout have no desire to cover UNT Football. One of them asked me to take over the TCU site, where I would make money. I choose this and it costs me money. In otherwords, I'm putting my money where my mouth is. As for football recruiting, you have three players that will start or get a majority of playing time as true freshmen. In watching the team several times, there are five or six recruits that are coming in better than some junior and seniors on the team. As for basketball, after he signs the two transfer guards, Jones will have a team that will go deeper into the NCAA Tournament. I think he will be gone after that but you do have a coach ready to take over. He is a recruiter and a proven winner. So don't be nervous. You see Jones not only can recruit players he can recruit winning coaches. (Have an article ready about another freshman in junior college he is looking at.) No, I do not want to post here and there is a reason, I do not want to lose my objectivity. Plus, what I do may interfere with this board owner and do not want to do that. Yes, I will have an RV at the games and you can stop by and share a cool one or maybe watch some of the other games going on that are on TV. I will visit tailgating parties if you ask me by. Almost always have something to give away. There is a story on Courmouche up, Pasternack would not tell me if he has asked for his release but book it, he is gone. Article on Orr will be up tomorrow. We've heard the speculation that there will be five 16-team superconferences but I think that's treading on dangerous ground. First and foremost it smacks of monopoly. With no criteria for anyone to meet, it smacks of cronyism and Congress doesn't take that lightly (even though they do it themselves). It might depend on who's included. You can't take the BCS requirements as we know them because in consolidation many that would qualify in power rating would not if you included only "super powers." That would also rule out setting the standards too high. What they may eventually do by the haves taking all of the revenue is consider that as profiteering and do away with allowing a tax exemption for donations, especially to athletics. The main fault with capitalism is greed. If we all would just exercise a little self-control we'd all be better off.1 point

[Mark Levin voice]I'm glad Todd Dodge put Derek Thompson in the Arkansas State game. There! I said it! I was glad then when I heard it on the radio, and I'm glad now as I sit at my desk and savor the victory of writing another local restaurant chain's insurance. Victory, I tell you! Nothing feels as good as a victory in any endeavor! And, Todd Dodge was trying to get a victory late that afternoon when all of his other quarterbacks were either sick or beaten to hell, I tell ya! And, I'll guaran-damn-tee every last mother's son in here that Derek Thompson feels the same way, too. All of them do! They're football players! American football players. And, these American football players aspire to win. Not like these namby-pamby liberals in Washington, D.C. trying to take our country apart by giving everyone a trophy or ribbon just for showing up! I mean how else are American football players molded except in the crucible of the field of battle? What? Do you think Obama and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and all of their liberal cronies in Austin, Boston, Boulder and Berkeley can just wave a magic wand and make these guys ready to play? The only place you should be rewarded for just showing up and participating is Goldline.[/Mark Levin voice]1 point

WOW...not taking anything away from the post, but do you really think Colt McCoy "wimped out"? You have got to be kidding with that line of thought. The kid could not even hold on to a football and couldn't throw the thing across a locker room to his dad. Do you really think that Colt McCoy wanted to stay out of that game? I am in no way a Texas fan or a apologist for Colt McCoy, but to think he did not return because he wimped out is really pushing it. I have asked several MD's (one being my son) about that injury and to a one they said it would have been a disaster had he tried to play. Not that he would have done any real damage to himself, but that he would not have been able to pass the ball more than about 5 yards and that without accuracy at all. OK, so play and hand the ball off every play or give your team a chance by inserting healthy yet unproven QB. I know exactly which call I would make. Deep, great stuff on Scott Hall...a great UNT QB. But, I do think you are a bit off base thinking McCoy "wimped out". he may well prove to be injury prone...perhaps why he was drafted as late as he was, and he may not have a long NFL career, but a wimp...I think not. Any kid who has played the number of football games this kid had, and who has played at the level he played and taken the hits in practice and in games that he has over his career, in no wimp. BTW...SCOTT HALL will be in Denton and has committed to play in this year's GMG.com Bowl on Saturday, may 15th...3PM...UNT Soccer Complex. Everyone is invited to come out and play (it's not too late to sign up to play), to tailgate, to watch, etc., etc. Donations will be accepted for the Andrew Smith Memorial Scholarship fund, but you do not have to donate to come out and enjoy the event. It is open to one and all. Should be fun....come join us!1 point

Love it! Hilarious. Or maybe he can just throw another tax on the wealthy programs? So teams like Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, and USC will have to re-distribute their massive earnings to lesser programs like UNT? I like the sounds of that as a NT fan, but the problem is that in real life nObama is re-distributing what I and many others have worked so hard for. Won't go any further with that, but your post was hilarious.1 point

McCoy did not go in the first two rounds; therefore, he was not a game decider. So, of course, Ryan Leaf was wonderful, and Tom Brady, sixth round draft choice, is awful. What it takes to be successful in college and in the pros is not always the same. As far as can McCoy make it, I suggest we wait and see. PC changed a lot of games for us. Are we going to disregard that because the pros were not lined up for him when he finished.1 point

Yes, Ryan Leaf had he played for UT last season would have won that game. Brady, as he was in college, wouldn't have. Next question...-1 points

To me the question to me on Colt McCoy is guts. I saw Scott Hall play in so many games taking much worse hits than Colt did. He let his team and his school as well as his legacy down at UT by whimpping out in the biggest game his career will ever see, When a QB quits the mythical BCS Championship game do you really think ANY pro team thinks he can lead them to a Super Bowl? A super UT season went down in flames because of the QB in the last two games. To all but those with the most orange colored glasses, the rest of the world saw it happen. Remember a QB sneak at KSU a couple of years ago took Colt out for the remainder of the season as well. Interesting stat that Scott Hall won seven games his senior season, and the next five NT QB's have won ten total. Seems any fan here should recognize a brittle QB.-1 points

I like, no really like, picking up Dez in the first round for the cowboys. Now, after saying that I don't get the selection of the LB from Penn state. Didn't Jerry learn about white linebackers from the Big Ten(Carpenter anyone)? Also, people expect us to believe a QB who couldn't go in the first two rounds would have been the decisive player in the national title game????-1 points
