By defination, a quitter is a player that leaves our program. A good player looking for more playing time by coming to North Texas after playing somewhere else is a transfer.2 points

I'd take them both in a New York minute if they're motivated to work enough to get on the field somehwere else and not just use a scholarship to get a free ride. "Quitters" is a term way overused by the majority of the Mean Green fanbase and needs to go by the way-side. Why did they choose not to return to Texas? The article states playing time, but the reasons could go a lot deeper than that. Texas is one of about 5 or 6 schools in the country (Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Florida, Alabama, Ohio State) where the depth and recruiting is so far above other programs, and good "3 star/4 star" high school athletes could never get a chance for a number of reasons. Programs like North Texas can benefit tremendously from athletes like these two in particular. These "bounce back" players tend to bode well for almost every other program in the country, including some of the big programs I listed above (see Colin Peek the TE from Alabama this past year, was a 'bounce back' from Georgia Tech) and these players are everywhere. We certainly have welcomed Tyler Stradford and William Cole with open arms (though Cole was on his last rope academically) and why not welcome as many as possible? Unless there's unspoken off the field baggage that the AD would find out ahead of time, take a chance. What do you have to lose? These guys are probably bigger, faster, and stronger than anyone on the North Texas team at their respective positions. As someone mentioned, Troy does quite well with them, and why can't we?2 points

Not really an issue. University of South Florida, University of Southern California, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Central Florida, etc etc. Directional naming isn't really that much (any?) of a stigma anymore. What works against us is our lack of football success, perception of poor academics (eg. Tier 4), lack of community support, no baseball team, sparse number of businesses and a campus perimeter that looks just awful, and probably a lot more. We have a lot of work to do to be in consideration for a power conference. I felt like we were on the right road until Dr. B was fired. Now I'm not sure what our timetable is for a lot of these things.1 point

Right. Just because the rope wasn't strong enough, the gun jammed or the garage wasn't as air-tight as you thought when you started idling doesn't mean its some sign from God. Keep at it.1 point

But, that's why we have you...to always let everyone else know that there are only a very select few "cool kids" who can figure out what other people are really saying. You know, how the "cool kids" snicker and assume they are they only ones who can really play the game. Appreciate the help. Maybe some folks actually did "get it", but are just stating their own opinions and comments. Hard to imagine, but it could be true. BTW...I think the sarcasm in the above is easy enough for even us "non-cool kids" to figure out. Fire away! But, do it nicely.1 point

To me, a quitter is someone who bolts in midseason for no reason. Prime example - 1983, Marcus Dupree leaves Oklahoma when his sophomore season wasn't going as swimmingly as his freshman season. There, a guy walked out on a team in mid-season when a whole offense had been built around him. That's a quitter. A kid not getting playing time, riding the pine at a big university, with almost no hope of cracking the two-deep = not a quitter. Rather, he's just being realistic about how much eligibility he has left and how he wants to use it. Those we don't talk about: the kids who don't start or play very much, but nonetheless stick to it. Those guys are the backbone of the squad. You need them for practice and locker room "glue." These guys play their parts, take their degrees, and move on. I've got no problem with anyone unless they are rule breakers or quit in midseason. But, if a kid really wants to play, I don't see the harm in him leaving a program.1 point

I'd welcome them both. Also, the "quitters" thing needs to die. These guys don't get "four year rides" like most casual fans believe. Their scholarships are either renewed each year or not. Coaches go into these kids' homes and do their sell job on them. If the thing isn't working out and a kid is sitting on the bench, he's just as much in his right to move on as the athletic department is to not renew his scholarship. And, don't kid yourself, sometimes a coach will keep guys sidelined hoping they will leave, for whatver reason. Ask former players and their parents. It's a business in the 21st century and a kid's only got five years. If whatever the coach sold him isn't what is happening in reality, or the kid just isn't living up to the hype, it's fine for him to leave - it's a two-way street.1 point

Wait until they put big 12 opponents in their stadium and then it will be too small.1 point

BYU is not your typical small private school. They bring in 60K in football and fill arenas and bowl game stadiums wherever they go. They almost double the following of Baylor and travel en mass even at away games during a regular season. If they were in the Big 12 it would go something like this: Texas OU Nebraska Texas A&M BYU K State OSU Texas Tech Missouri Kansas Baylor Iowa State I also think UNT needs to begin formulating a multitude of plans, 1 expanding the SBC another a trip into CUSA, another a trip into MWC. If BSU leaves for the MWC does La Tech begin to toy with the SBC? If the MWC gets gutted does a UNM become and or NMSU become available. What if UNM, UTEP, La Tech and NMSU be lured to an SBC West. I think UTEP to MWC and NT into CUSA would be ideal. If TCU leaves why not make a ploy to continue to MWC footprint in the Metro by adding NT? Hey you have to believe it before you can be it. You also need to be prepared for anything. GMG1 point

It's been really jarring driving by campus this week. A very sudden demolition of the old Radisson is well underway, with half of the building already gone and the insides creepily exposed. It's moved VERY quickly, and it pretty exciting (and kind of shocking) to see a big part of the Denton landscape gone... looks like this crazy stadium business is ACTUALLY happening (as I take every chance to remind myself..).1 point

Worst Presidents: FDR: Took America way too far into a socialist society way too fast. LBJ: Kept us on the path that FDR laid out. BHO: Nailing the last nails in the coffin from FDR & LBJ. Wilson: Gave away our ability to control our own money to the internationalist bankers...Federal Reserve. Got us into a European Civil War to save all the money they lent the Brits and the French. If WW kept our boys home in 1917 would a second trip been necessary by FDR? Carter: Spineless but got to have loved 24% interest rates. Truman: 1st prez not to allow us to win a war. 80% of US casulties came defending the 38th Parallel.1 point

Take it from a guy who knows his own laziness played a huge role in killing not one, but two reasonably popular online newsletter-type outlets: You need to update more frequently and put up a lot more fresh content if you want to keep your newsletter subscribers.1 point

BYU would go to the big 12. They need a northern team and what better competitive team fits the bill? AK would be stupid to leave the SEC. Co St isn't going anywhere because they haven't proven themselves. Sadly all this moving around (IMO) has no affect on UNT going anywhere. I think we are in a good position with the building of a stadium but I seriously doubt that CUSA wants another Texas team in their conference. If UTEP gets plucked then we might be a different story.0 points

I too find the term "quitter" very overused....and mostly inaccurate. I've often wondered what the difference is in a player that someone says has "quit" another team, and a player that "transfers". My favorite QB of all time, Jordan Case, started off playing at Sul Ross State, and was freshman of the year in their league. He decided to come to North Texas and wrote Hayden Fry a letter asking for a try out....which (thank goodness) Fry agreed to. Now, did that make Jordan Case a "quitter"?0 points

Just enjoying the +/- thing and seeing it for what it is. Sorry that what I do or don't do seems to bother you so much. I have advocated against the +/- thing as I felt it would become just what it has, but I do get some "jollies" out of messing around with it. You have your "joys" on the board, I have mine. Folks do some "interesting" things when they think they are anonymous. That's why I let any and all know who I really am and enjoy meeting other GMG.com posters in "real life". Some just seem to avoid that possibility so they can continue to post in anonymity, no problem at all. To each his/her own.-1 points
