Didn't see any. However, I will say this offense seems to be much more effecient in short yardage situations and in the red zone. The 'under center' stuff is way over-done on this board. If you were out there yesterday, you saw that in short yardage there'd be at least 1 TE and mostly 2 TE's, a FB who went in motion, a RB who started 2 yards behind the QB (not pistol, but close) and they ran the simple "iso" or "lead" play off guard or tackle which worked well. It's not a lot different than being under center in an I formation. It is certainly different than Todd Ford's version of the 'short yardage' offense, and seems to be a lot more effecient.6 points

I agree that Hamilton looked really good in today's game... He ran really hard and changed directions very well... He and Dunbar are going to be fine... The sideline play to Tyler Stradford was also a standout... He caught the pass, turned outside and caught a serious extra gear to get about 15 more yards... Tune made some big league throws, but also had some wheels off moments in the pocket... Thompson seemed to have some trouble with his delivery at times... Low throws, etc... All in all I thought it was very encouraging and I can't wait for September 11... My son and I are officially season tickets holders as of today...6 points

It would be interesting to find out who people think should be the QB coming out of spring practice and why. I'll personally say #7 Derek Thompson because he has a great amount of ability, can make all of the throws, does a good job of buying time in and out of the pocket, and I look at things long term (meaning that we need a 3 year starter at QB if him and Tune are even in the coaches eyes). Yesterday Thompson did a better job of sustaining drives and eating up yards in segments, rather than just going for the homerun. He also, seemed to make less risky throws (ie late over the middle of the field) than Tune. I'll take Thompson, and say that we'll score 32 points/game this fall with him leading the charge.3 points

i enjoyed the game very much today. both sides showed flashes and there has to be improvement. side note....as the players were arriving to head into the stadium, my kids and i stood about 20 feet away from the main entrance and up comes some dude. he introduces himself to my kids as Chico Cananles. it was really cool that he did this. he went out of his way to come say hi to us. he did say that the scrimmage was going to be very vanilla today, but not to worry no other coach has ever gone out of his way to greet us and talk to us...very cool...he's a keeper!!!3 points

I think Tune starts against Clemson, then sets numerous school passing records the following week against Army... Thompson will then start the rest of the season.2 points

John, I had looked him up earlier and found that that he played at Mendocino CC (Ukiah, CA) as a freshman in 2007. I don't know where he's been the past two years but he hasn't played anywhere since he's listed as a sophomore in eligibility. He does appear to have been eating regularly.2 points

Wow, and to think I really thought you were just being an instigator. Ya, Florida had a real problem with this offense when it was run by Tim Tebow, who probably is slower afoot than Thompson, who WILL BE your starter this coming year. What you fail to acknowledge is that Riley could not throw the ball downfield last year. We now have that threat, which will more than compensate for a slight lack in mobility of the Quarterback this year vs last. And speaking of the running QB, Derek Thompson will be a much bigger load to bring down than Riley. His size also makes him much more durable. He is a running threat, just a different kind of running threat. Really one of the dumbest posts I've seen.2 points

Take it from a guy who knows his own laziness played a huge role in killing not one, but two reasonably popular online newsletter-type outlets: You need to update more frequently and put up a lot more fresh content if you want to keep your newsletter subscribers.1 point

Tune. IMO it would do Thompson some good to watch and learn from the sidelines for a while...not saying at all that he is not good.1 point

I see Tune starting the Clemson game, with Thompson coming in when the game is out of reach for some late game experience with no pressure. From Rice on, I think Thompson will be the guy. Nothing against Tune, but Thompson is the future and will be given the opportunity from the 2nd game forward. Guaranteed (Why not, I'm on a hot streak).1 point

Did anyone else notice that in the second half of the game, the defense seemed to be more creative in blitzing against Thompson? They brought a lot of different looks, including a CB blitz, but I don't recall the blitz coming against Tune with the same kind of creativity and frequency.1 point

I'd have to say Thompson. I consider them pretty even in passing but Thompson is more mobile and a better runner. I also feel that Thompson exhibits more leadership...he seems to play to win while Tune plays to 'not lose'. Experience is one place where Tune has the advantage. He seems a little better at spotting the open man. The margin at this time is pretty close but I believe that Thompson will improve with experience whereas with Tune it's pretty much what you see is what you'll get.1 point

This kid looks like he should make the squad coming out of spring camp. He's a large body, with long arms whos effective in pass pro, as well as having a bit of a nasty streak in him while run blocking. He definitely has good feet for a man his size.1 point

Absolutely! Well put. Although Canales has said that Thompson is 'straight-line speed' as fast or faster than Grothe, who was a record setting QB at USF.1 point

I'm much more positive today than hearing of the earlier practices. The offense was pretty sharp but the defense was better than I expected it to be. For the first half, I thought there wasn't going to be a quarterback competition because it was all going Thompson's way. That changed at the half though. Energized by Stradford's TD catch, Tune seemed to find more time to throw and was on the mark a lot. I still think that Thompson won the battle this day but it wasn't one-sided. I don't worry about the running backs; Dunbar's a given and Hamilton showed that he will be a fine backup. And, I don't worry about his size. Also, I was glad to see Mosley get some carries near the end. The offensive line was a little disappointing but with two starters missing and Drake playing with the second unit that's pretty understandable. No great concern here; it's still a strength of the team. Carey and Jamaal Jackson each made a couple of nice plays as I expected but several of the receivers had their moments....especially Stradford, Jones, Breece Johnson, and Lott, who all had 20+ yard catches. Speaking of Bennie Jones; that young man deserves a scholarship. I don't remember anyone that really stood out on defense but there were no glaring weaknesses. Some that caught my eye were Phillips, Robertson, Graham, McLeod, Atkinson, and Obi. A walkon, wearing #23, also made a couple of good plays. And, I was glad to see Dez Brigham come up with an interception. With likely half of the starters not here or not playing in the spring scrimmage, and having a summer of conditioning and informal practice to improve, I'm really looking forward to this coming season.1 point

I found a lot more to like about this year's compared to last year's scrimmage. I like Riley's attitude and quickness, but his position change seems to have led to a much more focused approach from the others competing for the starter's role. I really liked the greater variety of targets also; last year, it seemed like it was mostly Riley throwing to Stradford(sp?). Overall, I thought the players looked more involved; last year, it seemed a little too obvious that some didn't want to be there, and I didn't notice any of that today.1 point

Good Game The RB Hamilton really caught my eye....i think he is going to be a great 1-2 punch with dunbar next season....thompson looked good...tune was solid also and had a nice pass to Tyler Stradford who looked excellent today...really excited about 2010! Go Mean Green!1 point

Thompson looked very good early, especially whenever he got a chance to roll out and made some great throws on the run. He did miss a couple of wide open receivers, but only because he didn't look their way not because of errant throws. I wouldn't worry too much about the running game. They ran the zone read A LOT and in this type of game where the play is dead when the QB is touched the only way the play would gain decent yardage was for the QB to give up the ball. There were a lot of different RBs that showed flashes. Brandin Byrd caught my eye among the masses. Something I found interesting was that, almost without exception, whenever Rodge stepped onto the field the ball came his way. I know it was just a spring game, but there were signs that I really liked. Not all of it may come together in 2010, but 2011 should be an exciting year.1 point

Anwar al-Awlaki has done enough to lose his citizenship under 8 USC 1482. Specifically, he serves as an officer (regional commander) for al-Qaeda, an organization that has declared war against the United States. He is a deadly threat to American citizens, and won't stop until he is dead. So, I really have no problem with Obama ordering his assassination.1 point

Unfortunately, perhaps I should remind the parks board folks that the war in Iraq and Afghanistan is not over as yet. My bride and I have a son in Iraq at this time. We hope and pray for his safe return...along with all the others currently and in the future stationed in the war zones. Again, I would prefer that the park be named as a memorial to all who served. I think the board will make a good decision either way....and I am sure all the citizens of Denton will be pleased whichever way the final decision goes.1 point

He transferred from Nebraska because he was not getting any playing time not because he didn't want to play under the basket. I can't believe anyone thinks JJ signed Edwards to play the wing. Edwards averaged 6 points on a mediocre juco, why would anyone thing he is an outside offensive threat? If that performance coach had mentioned in his article that Alonzo really wants to play the point, some of you would be predicting less playing time for White and Johnson. Edwards was a very good high school player, physical and with some skills. I would think that JJ and apparently other coaches believe with his physical ability he can become a force around the basket based on his high school promise and ignoring what he has done since. The interesting thing is that he was signed during the juco season and his numbers were only slightly better than at the end of the year. I thought he was a strange choice for NT's only ship at the time but he was signed to replace Tramiel at the 4. Tramiel was a first team juco All American, Edwards was not closed to being all anything. I do think that the coaching staff sees a little of Odufuwa in Edwards. Odufuwa in his sophomore year was a strong re-bounder but very limited offensively. Maybe Edwards can be a player that gives you adequate defense and 8 ppg and 6 rbg next year.1 point

Tune. I'm don't want to take anything away from Thompson but at this point all we have is one series in a throw away game last season and a spring against a defense that we know won't really "bring it" because he's their teammate. With Tune I know that he has at least faced Alabama, troy and some time against others in "live" play. All I'm saying is it's far easier to be a practice all-star...unless Thompson is head and shoulders above I'd go with the experienced signal caller.0 points

It was a great afternoon at Fouts yesterday, and there were so many things to be excited about for 2010 that it would be hard to list them all here. The Mean Green will be just fine at QB...with either Tune or Thompson getting the starting nod. Thompson looked the better of the two earlier while Tune came on pretty strong in the "second half". Never saw any play from under center, but maybe I missed it. Seeing Micah at Tight End was interesting. Finding ways to get this kid on the field is a plus in my book. Good to see. I was not overly thrilled with the defense early, but they seemed to step up a bit as the day went on, and I saw many things to be happy about. I know some folks were "happy" with the tailgate crowd and the size of the crowd attending the game itself. And, in some ways, so am I. But...why does UNT not make a big deal out of this spring event? It's an ideal time to sell season tickets, to get the Mean Green faithful "fired up", to push the stadium and contributions, etc., etc. It was mentioned to me by a couple of ladies in the tailgate area that there was not even one "porta potty" set up. I have been at games where a crowd of 3800 would have seemed good, but I was a bit disappointed in the crowd. However, due to the lack of any effort on the part of the Ath Dept to really publicize this event, I think it was a nice turnout. It was good to see my "seat pals" doing their tailgate thing, and to re-connect with some folks I had not seen since the end of last season. It really was fun, and the team showed me lots to be excited about for 2010. Fun day to be at Fouts...lots of changes coming to this team in 2010, and from my seat yesterday, things are looking UP for the Mean Green. Can't wait to see the sets, coverages, etc. on day one of the 2010 season. I hope the Mean Green faithful will turn out and support the team and I hope the ath dept. finds a way to publicize the season, get the students more involved and really go after new season ticket buyers. It should be a great year to say good-bye to our old friend Fouts Field. One thing RV mentioned at last Wednesday's event at Park Place Lexus was that UNT should stop thinking of itself as the "beer and pretzels" school and start looking at itself as the "champagne and scotch" university and athletic program. Well, yesterday would have been a good day to start that "champagne and scotch" thing...opportunity missed perhaps, but more will follow. It's Going To Be A Great Year to be a member of the Mean Green Nation. Yesterday was a nice start....see you at Fouts. GO MEAN GREEN!0 points

Or he could transfer for legitimate reasons only to be labeled a quitter because we selfishly want him to provide our team with a game ready backup.0 points

I heard an administration "person" indicate that it WAS NOT the authorization of an assassination, but rather the authorization of a "TARGETED KILLING". Gee, that sounds pretty much like an assassination to me. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck...I would think it's pretty much a duck. Anyone wonder what the media would have done to Bush had he authorized this and then tried to say it was not the authorization of an assassination? While I tend to think this guy needs to be "eliminated", and will probably shed no tears when he is no longer with us, I think this pretty much falls in line with the sort of thing all the libs and dems were so "fired up" about with the Bush Administration. But, since it was authorized by the Obama Administration, I guess the deed gets a pass from the media. Nice! Just another indication that actually having to lead is a whole bunch different than being out on the campaign trail promising "stuff" to all comers just to get elected. So, this is the "change" we can believe in........this is pretty interesting stuff...no matter which side of the aisle you favor.-1 points

Yeah, I'm a dummy. "Despite the multi-receiver sets, the spread option is a run-first scheme which requires a quarterback that is comfortable carrying the ball, a mobile offensive line that can pull and trap effectively, and receivers that can hold their blocks. The essence of the spread option is misdirection. Effectively, this is the old triple option except that it utilizes spread sets. In particular, the quarterback must be able to read the defensive end and determine whether he is collapsing down the line or playing upfield contain." So if we lose our the running threat at QB, are we going to be able to open up the seams necessary to "spread" the defense?-1 points

Are we going to be able to run a spread offense without a running threat at QB?-1 points

So why are you concerned ? By your own posts you will not donate, will not buy tickets or have anything to do with the team until changes you want are made. The offense will be OK without Riley at quarterback. The program will be OK without Shafts support.-2 points
