Great game by our Men's team, totally showed there skills on the court and played some good D late in the game. The thing that really impressed me was how we stayed calm after Denver came back into the game and showed our true poise, Josh White, is amazing and carried the way. I think we have a good shot of making some noise in the SBC Tourney and definately have a good shot at winning the rest of our games. Another 20+ season. congrats JJ and Mean Green Basketball Team5 points

"Mo Green" sounds like a football fan who's jealous of what the basketball team has. What's sad is that his argument of "if the football team played bottom feeders, they would be good too" because the football team does play bottom feeders (with the exception of Alabama) and still can't win. Paid his dues or not, he is still a hater4 points

One thing I'll say, respectfully, is that I don't know if there's a worse time to accuse us of playing poor defense than right after the game we just played vs. Denver. Denver plays the Princeton offense, and the primary goal of that scheme is to use frequent passes and off-ball movement to open up lanes for wide open layups. It's an odd offense that can be difficult to defend because it's so different than what teams generally see (for you football fans, think of it as a triple option offense for the basketball court). Denver only hit a total of 8 2-point baskets all night. That's four baskets per half, one every five minutes of game time. So basically, we avoided the Princeton offense trap, and we almost completely shut down the primary component of their offensive game. I can only remember them hitting one layup that looked like a defensive breakdown in the whole game. The backup plan for the Princeton offense, the way to keep opponents from just clogging the lane to shut you down, is the 3 point shot. Denver hit 11 of them, and that's the only reason they were able to stay close with us. 3 of them came from guys who were 6'9", taller than anyone we have except for Ben Knox. We also completely shut down one of the frontrunners for Sun Belt Player of the Year, Nate Rohnert. He averages 15 per game on a team that averages in the mid 60's. Last night, he had 3 points. Basically, we went into last night planning on shutting down the layup lanes and locking down one of the best players in our league. We did that to near perfection. The risk of that approach is that you're leaving tall guys open on the perimeter, and we were daring Denver to beat us by having tall, gangly white guys (but not their best white guy) jack up 3's. They did a pretty amazing job of it, all things considered... Hit 11 of them, shot 55% from 3 point land... But they still lost by 5. We took away their high percentage shots. We shut down their all star. They still managed to shoot a ridiculous percentage from the outside, but it wasn't enough. It was a good defensive strategy, it worked, and if we face them again in the tournament, I hope we do it again.3 points

Hey, we are going to win 20 games this year....ask SMU,TCU and UTA what it feels like to win 20 games back to back. They have no clue. We might just go to the big dance again. Ask SMU and TCU what that feels like. They have no clue. We are getting our bang for the buck with Johnny Jones. Those of you in distress, go shoot a few hoops in your drive way and calm down.3 points

Conference re-alignments are much like all the wives who just keep having to move the furniture around to get that "new" look. Same funiture--new look? And thanks, Eagle1855, for the oil derrick symbol of the Oilers for those of us who grew up in the Houston area with many of us remembering names like those listed below: George Blanda Charlie Hennigan Charlie Tolar Scott Appleton Ken Houston (got lucky and was traded to the Redskins--way to go, Bud Adams) Don Trull (short career) Lawrence Elkins (even shorter career) Bob Talamini Pete Beathard Willie Parker Elvin Beathea Sid Blanks Charlie Frazier Willard Deuvall Pat Holmes Hoyle Granger Ernie Ladd (very brief career with Oilers) ...and way too many more names I've forgotten at the moment3 points

I think it's a little misleading to simply state that we're 0-2 vs. top 100 RPI teams. We lost after very respectable efforts on the road against the #14 (Texas A&M) and #37 (Oklahoma State) teams. I tend to think that either game could have (with a little luck) gone our way if it was played at home, but that's perhaps just my overly optimistic opinion. Also, we played six teams (not three) with an RPI between 101-200, compiling a 4-3 record.2 points

That sign is great. Maybe we can fire Lee Jackson and hire Dr. Bataille as Chancellor. At least she has an academic background. Next, begin looking at the regents and follow the trail to Austin. Start looking at motives for why removing the spearhead of our recent and rapid developement would be important and to whom. I've been involved with UNT for 25+ years and every time we are on the verge of taking that one "big" step, we find a way to screw it up. Here we go again... As many have said before, this whole thing just doesn't sit (smell) right.2 points

Well, to make a long story short (and I won't paste links to the Denton Record Chronicle article that NT03 posted in UNT News, where there are also links to the "Transition Agreement"). But, just in case you haven't noticed, many of us are not pleased with the situation wich resulted in the resignation of Gretchen Bataille as President, which was voted on and accepted 7 to 2 by the UNT Board of Regents, all of whom have been appointed by Governor Perry. Maybe the almost $750k that this action cost UNT is no big deal to some, and maybe (for reasons unknown to the public), there were good reasons for it, but, couldn't this have been handled better, at a time when the University is undertaking to start asking a lot of people in the UNT community to increase their giving levels, or to start giving for the first time? And, doesn't it make it a little harder that Gayle Strange, who had been in charge of a campaign which was intended to raise $170 million for the University, resigned from that position, giving as her reason the handling of the Gretchen Bataille situation? But, if you don't think the governor should be held responsible for the appointments he/she makes, I will disagree. I will commend you for having mentioned in the Republican GOP Gubernatorial primary thread (although not too directly) the problems with the Republican Gubernatorial candidate Medina, over her recent self destructing remarks on the "9-11 Truther" beliefs (while others were still making positive comments about her AFTER those remarks were make public). And, by the way, one of the Democratic candidates, Farouk, followed her on that position shortly thereafter. I guess what I'm suggesting is that we may be coming to a time when considering political candidates, the person, their statements, and their actions may become more important than their political party. And I do feel it's fair, since you mentioned digressing in your original post, to bring up statewide political issues on higher education, since we must have a strong economy in order to make everything else possible, and higher education is at least a part of preparing for the future economy.2 points

Honestly, at this point, I'm pretty ashamed at what the Republicans have done in regards to higher education in Texas, especially at my UNT, and I'm not even a Republican. But, I guess Governor Perry should be given a pass on his appointees, because he's only been in office for ten years, and needs another four to get things right.2 points

And now they start after wins...what a great fan base. If more people read the basketball board, I think you'd be in the running to catch playmaker in the seventh ring of reputation point hell. Courage.1 point

Hey, appreciate the reply...but still wondering what you meant by what "the Republicans have done to higher education in Texas". If all you mean is that the BOR decided to go in a different direction on the President of UNT, I have a hard time seeing how that is a major blow to "higher education in Texas" being delivered by the "Republicans". I agree with the concept of holding people accountavble for the actions and comments...not just politicians however. BTW...that last statement is not directed at eulessismore. I appreciawhichted his reply.1 point

The chancellor would answer to the BOR, and the President answers to the Chancellor. I am not sure about Texas law. In Arkansas, the state constitution gives sole power to the BOR. I am not sure how it would work in Texas.1 point

eulessismore...not wanting to start a "dust up" or anything, but can you be specific about what "the Republicans have done in regards to higher education in Texas" that has you "pretty ashamed"?1 point

Yep...and why would anyone give you a -1 for just posting the link? Amazing. I gave you a +1 to try to even it out a bit. Seems some folks just like to be negative! ha!1 point

What about those of us that find the smart remarks more interesting/entertaining than the original topic?1 point

Absolutely...that's perhaps the reason you do not go back to step one when it has been tried and failed...more than once. No one has skipped the first two steps you mention and no one has gone to step three with Iran, N. Korea or Venezuela that I know of at this point. Seems the administration, in all its campaign glory, was all set on just sitting down and talking and the folks would certainly agree with everything and we would once again enter "peace in our time" la la land even when that strategy had failed so very badly many many times before. It worked as a campaign ploy, but the reality of leading is much different than campaign ploys and buzz words like "change". So many of the campaign "promises" have fallen by the wayside and so many of the realities of governing and leading are beginning to sink in with this administration. But, fast learners they are not. Love the billboard recently erected in Minnesota. have you seen it? It's a photo of President Bush with the words; "Miss Me Yet"? Or, something to that effect. Pretty funny. While I was not a big fan of G. Bush (much to free with the spending, etc.) I do think the billboard is pretty funny. A sign of the times perhaps and a sign of the coming times for the 2010 mid-terms perhaps. We'll see, won't we all?1 point

JJ has not let up for one minute in his work with this program. He is by far the best coach at UNT right now and deserves this extension no matter the timing.1 point
-
I dont think Rick was commenting on JJ, rather he was commenting on how RV has Dodge wait until the end of the year to talk about the season/future... so why not JJ as well? Maybe I'm wrong. (Like GreenP1, I also wonder what all of the dots mean?) I think we should treat the Bball team and Fball teams differently though. 11 games gives you a good idea of how your coach is doing. In Fball, this is a whole season. In Bball, that's only about 1/3 of your season. Based on what Johnny has put together here, I think he deserves this consideration right now. Especially with what he's done this year in working through injuries.1 point
-
Why would you be against this no matter the timing? When you look at what he has done compared to every other coach before him, it is a o brainer. Just like Vito said.1 point

Well, first of all... are you 4x as angry about the quadrupling of the deficit under Obama? For the first time ever we had a trillion dollar deficit, and he did it again with his second budget. In just 13 months, he has already passed Bush's deficits over 8 years. Second, everyone got a tax cut under Bush who paid taxes. Everyone. If you didn't notice, I suggest getting an accountant. The poor don't pay taxes, in fact they get "earned" income tax credits, money from people who do pay taxes. The EITC was increased under Bush, and he proposed simplifying it so working class people could more easily claim it. The Democratic Congress did nothing. Did you know Fox news stock can be purchased by anyone? Seriously.... Facts vs. Daily KOS rubbish. It's no contest.1 point

so one homecoming 3 or 4 years ago is a landmark event that can help out the university of north texas??? i guess i just expect more with all the talk that people do about him. i realize mean joe is retired and has more time, but i just expect more.1 point

that's some great accolades for him and all that he does. he certainly deserves it and it's great to see him recognized here....but...what has he done for the betterment of north texas lately? mean joe is always around during football season and was at the ground breaking ceremony. i don't ever remember hearing brian waters being at landmark north texas events. it would be great if he used some of his stature to help promote north texas. yes, i know that by having him named the nfl'er of the year that north texas gets mentioned, but patrick cobbs also get north texas' name mentioned when he's playing. just curious...1 point
