At the game last night, they announced all the athletes at UNT that made the Presidents list, Deans list, and A and B roll. Congrats to all, but Cam Montgomery, who made the Presidents list (4.0 GPA) really stuck out to me. It's nice to see a JUCO transfer taking advantage of the academic opportunity offered.7 points

At the risk of sounding like I'm splitting hairs, there is a difference in being positive and being confident. The difference is illustrated when sports fans talk about an upcoming game, and/or situation in a game. The positive person talks about his team winning, or his favorite player making a big play. The confident person puts money on it. You see that exchange all the time. I'm hoping that the new coordinator(s) are able to give Coach Dodge more confidence.5 points

During the signing day event at the Pourhouse, Coach Dodge spoke about how the staff has developed very good JUCO contacts in Mississippi, Kansas, and now California. I am very glad the staff has developed these JUCO program contacts. If a quality JUCO athlete is available, that can help the program, the staff should recruit the player. High school, or JUCO, recruit the athlete!4 points

What I'd like to hear & see both coodinators able to mentor Coach Dodge. In talking to Gary, he's never meet a more positive coach in coach Dodge in his life. Then, we go for a field goal in the closing minutes of the Ohio game to just tie the thing up while sitting on the .5 yard line? I'm not following the reason for not going for the win if he's so positive. That started our down fall this year. We all hope next season is a real winning season, but its important the coaches & players prepare now for it.now. \4 points

This Statement slipped out of an Ouzo soaked TheTastyGreek at a resent event. TheTastyGreek said something to extent of, "Texas is full of F'ing Pickup Trucks, Cowboy Boots and beer all things which should have died in the last century, you know go the way of the Dinosaur. What this state needs is more sandals, Vespa scooters, and Ouzo." I knew I was to take to being offended, I mean son what kind of individual living in the State of Texas hates Trucks? And Beer, how in the hell can beer be a bad thing? I had never thought I would hear something that UN-AMERICAN I was so discouraged I just did not know what to think, I was wondering what is this world coming to? My poor boots, I had nothing left to say. Maybe I am old, maybe I just don't get it no more. Gather the boys and take me down to the lower 40 and just shoot me in the head. A Texas with out Beer, no sir I will not live in that Texas. The next day I woke up thinking I am not that old maybe I need find out what this BS TheTastyGreek was spouting out? Grown Men wearing sandals outside the locker room or off the beach? Not likely. To imply a Scooter over a Truck, well I knew that was out of the question as well. I mean we have all heard the Jokes about a scooter is like pick'n up a fat girl. Both are fun to ride as long as your friends don't find out. So this really left Ouzo, I got the idea this was some sort of Drink but it doesn't sound very appealing. So I looked it up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouzo and I tell you folks it did not get much better, here is a quote from wikipedia: The only way I am going to drink a product of Lesbos, is if I am the third wheel at that party, I tell you what. Then I read more, it turns out this Ouzo product is favored by or based of something called anise, I mean holly Sh#t, thats Greek for anus I think. In the end all I know is you better watch out for this guy.3 points

maybe you should have a chat with your School Districts and County/City Officials and ask them to streamline their workforce and budgeting, since they are the ones who raise the property taxes, not the State. The big hit is the Maintenance and Operation portions of the Property Taxes which I believe they can raise year after year.2 points

The best half of basketball by far by this team this year. I made the trip North hoping for a Mean Green win but not expecting a blowout. Nice game by the men, lets hope this team gets on a streak. Now, if we could only average the time outs called by T Dodge and JJ.2 points

There was a bunch. RV said that hopefully we will not be able to fit everyone in the room. Well every seat was taken and people were lined up along the sides so I would say we already have. I would say 50+ were there.2 points

Why do I think Hicks sucks? Well, because the Stars and Rangers are my favorite local teams, and he has done his best to piddle with both. He responded to the Rangers sale by doing everything he can to sabotage the deal and negotiate with other potential ownership groups to sabotage Greenberg and Ryan. Today the DBJ is saying he now wants to sell the Stars. We have one of the lowest payrolls in hockey despite our market. He played GM in the mid-aughts and slowly dismantled everything this team was known for with poor free agent signings and pushing for terrible trades (Langs and Newy for Arnott and McKay still tightens my anus). He ran off good hockey minds for a playground for Brett Hull bc he wanted a name to sell tickets. He helped the model Sun Belt hockey squad become uninteresting even to many of its biggest supporters. For more on the lack of an investment in defense, see this excellent Bob Sturm post from January: http://sturminator.blogspot.com/2010/01/problems-with-stars.html As for what he does now, see this from a recent chat on TSN: Bottom line: We're effed barring a drafting miracle or a team sale.2 points

This is a good clean Hockey thread. Why drag Tony Romo into it? Quoner is right on, except to say Hicks Sucks... not that I'm asserting he doesn't, in fact, suck, but that I don't think we have enough information to determine if he "sucks" or not. Historically, he has been a good owner and I believe has a good core in the clubhouse for this team. However, his financial troubles with the Rangers and the Stars has made it hard for him to fund either team properly. Now that it appears that his issues with the Rangers are behind him he can focus his attention and revenue on the Stars. Will he do what he has to do in order to make the team a success again, and thus a revenue generator, or will he simply allow this team to exist at the level it does today because he's unwilling to take a risk? We'll know by this time next year if he's serious, or if he does, in fact, "suck". I've been to 5 games myself with 2 left to go to (my partners and I get season tickets and split 'em up) and aside from the Detroit game that we actually won, they have all be yawners. I'm hoping the pulse the team shows is still there after the Olympic break so the last two games I have this season aren't boring as 4 of the first 5 were. GO STARS!!!2 points

Ugh... Ok. Do some research. The Education outcome in China and India FAR out paces that of the education outcome in the United States. Statistics don't lie. People don't just come to America for education. The economics in both China and India are not as good as they are here, even when we're in the tank like we are now. ...and specifically in China, you can't live how you want to, raise the type of family you want, and the like. The political and economic situations in both countries can't be ignored to make an argument. You can't conclude that because people from those countries want to come here that means their education system is worse than ours - that logic doesn't even work. You need so badly to blame Republicans, you don't even get the point. First, the issue with Social Security isn't a result of high unemployment now. It is a problem because Presidents and Congresses of both parties since Social Security was created have pissed away the money being paid into the system to fund social programs and other government spending. ...and they have been doing this while KNOWING that in this Decade, the number of people paying into the system would be strained as the baby boomers started to need to use the system as they retired. You're so hard up to blame President Bush for everything that is wrong today, but two facts remain. In Late 2006 when you say the economy started to falter, DEMOCRATS gained control of Congress, the body of the government who actually HAS some impact on the economy, as they hold the purse strings and control the agencies that regulate business. ...and during President Bush's first term, he TRIED to do something about Social Security because this was coming, yet he was thwarted by members of congress in both parties. You may not have agreed with his method, but nobody bothers to give him credit for seeing the writing on the wall and trying to do something about it. Yes, fewer people working put less dollars in the system. I agree with that. So maybe this flip accelerated because of the bad economy, but even if we didn't have this recession, this same thing would have happened in 2013 or 2014, as it is inevitable - more people retiring, fewer children entering the workforce behind them, and the trust fund of money that had been paid in over the years is empty. Who do I blame? Government. Members of both parties. The politicians over the years who have allowed the Social Security Trust Fund to be spent like it's a rainy day fund for everything, and continuing to run deficits beyond even that raid. But in light of this fact, the response of the current government is to pour on more debt and spend even more money that we don't have, and to tax the living crap out of the folks that might invest and create new jobs? ...Again, I'm really tired of arguing the past. Blame Bush if it makes you feel better. ...but what the former President did doesn't make the economically illiterate moves of this President and his Congress right. ...as I was typing this, I got a message from a news feed in my e-mail that "House passes increase on debt limit by $1.9 trillion on a 217-212 vote". Your attack on yet another Republican ignores the fact that Reagan wasn't the only Governor of that State in the 70's and that there has been nothing but Democrat Governors and Democratically Controlled Legislators in that state since he was in power. You are so BLIND with hatred for a party, you can't see past the letter behind the name of the people in power to actually analyze the polices being made. Again, you show how little you know about California politics to place their current situation on a Governor who was in office 35 years ago. The issues in the state ARE long term, but they come from uncontrolled immigration, run away social spending and a court system that systematically thwarts the will of the voters in the state. ...the issues stem from the same issues we face as a nation, only they are further along in the process and they don't have a direct negative impact on everyone in the country. You're willing to place the blame for California on the shoulders of a man who has been out of power in that state for 30 years, yet you refuse to admit that the things the current president is doing could have negative ripple effects for Generations. You're willing to blame all of the ills of the world on George Bush, yet you fail (or refuse) to see how the current President and the current Congress are sending us RIGHT DOWN the same path California has taken to get them to the bad state they are in today. Perry cut the property tax rates that School Districts can impose via a Property Tax, so your statement isn't accurate. In many cities the local unit part of the property tax rate has dropped considerably during the past 3 years. For example, in McKinney, where I live, Total Local Unit (County, City and School District Combined) tax rates went from 2.93% in 2006 to 2.76% in 2007 to 2.43% in 2008 with a slight bump up in 2009 to 2.45%. So the governor's move in 2006 to drop the rate School Districts could tax (and to cap the increases they can make without legilative approval) have not caused property tax rates to go up. ...and McKinney isn't an isolated case. Medina's system hasn't been fully vetted, but if everyone, and not just the property owners, have to pay for education in this state, the burden of education and other funding will be borne by a larger group, and won't be such a hidden tax. (Most people pay their property taxes with their mortgage and don't pay much attention to it, just like they don't really pay attention to how much of their paycheck the Federal Governemnt confiscates each pay day). ANY system where the people have to see every time they are paying a tax is bound to create a more aware and in tune citizen. Any system where EVERYONE who is benefiting from the benefit of a tax also has to bear a portion of its cost is a good thing.2 points

I hope that it's not only coach Dodge that is infused with confidence. I'm pretty sure that coach Canales will come in with confidence, I just hope he can convey that to the players. I hope the incoming juco defensive guys will bring coach DeLoach some confidence as well. I hope he'll have confidence to rush QB's with more than just his down linemen more often next season. I also hope that Olen is as advertised so that Dodge can have more confidence in his kicking game. I think that with Dodge learning the speed of the game over the past few years, he'll now have his own confidence (at least I hope so). +1 by the way... you're not splitting hairs, that's a big difference.1 point

Another issue they faced was playing some stout competition during a stretch when they had 7 games in 14 days. Considering their issues with injuries are similar to ours, taking on who they played, when they played them, all stacked up on each other... Each game kept getting harder and more taxing than the last. The 5 game streak that really killed their record was in the heart of that run, with games against Southern Illinois, Troy, us, and two against MTSU, all in a 10 day stretch, 3 of them being on the road.1 point

Marty Turco had a win wow, I went to 3 games in the last 6 days and I was not sure Turco would even play again before the trade deadline. Man Dallas has slipped, they don't really play as a team most of the time. 31 minutes into tonight's game we had only 5 shots on net. It is amazing we won 4-2 with only 18 total shots, Minnesota had 42 shots they out shot us 2 and a third times. But we won and if I read it right we are only a point out of the playoffs. After really paying attention this last week man the Stars play uninspired hockey, they play as single players as if it was a pick up game, or a drop in. We have a ton of talent but I just don't see any desire as a team. The saving grace for me is Ott, I love that guy he plays hard he fights hard. Richards looks good at times and a couple others. But I want to see team play. Back to Ott he kicked the shit out of a couple of guys tonight.1 point

I think its probably more of a disadvantage of being located in Denton than it is a advantage when it comes to trying to get these local kids to stay home. What 18 year old kid wants mom & dad looking over his every move ? Boys need to become men at sometime and what better way than to go live hours away with hot coeds and drunken parties. That being said I think UNT should still have a strong showing in all the Denton schools offering every single DI recruit on the market , because u never know who just might get homesick.1 point

There is actually a Texas State University "system". UNT was once a part of it until 1949, but since we have our own system now could not get that name back. Rumor had it UT & A$M didn't want us to use it and blocked it in the state legislature. The TSU system now includes Lamar, Sam Houston, Sul Ross State, SW Texas St (now TSU-SM), and some smaller branch campuses. SW Texas changed to the TSU "system name with city" and officially it is TSU-San Marcos and must use the city if ever another school in the system also wants to be a TSU-something. Other historical info I found about the TSU system: Historical Highlights 1879 Sam Houston's Austin Hall, completed in 1852, is the oldest continuously-used state-owned higher education facility west of the Mississippi 1879 Sam Houston State created by Legislature as Sam Houston Normal Institute 1899 Southwest Texas created by Legislature as Southwest Texas Normal School 1923 Name of System changed from State Normal Schools to State Teacher Colleges 1949 North Texas State, now the University of North Texas, given independent board of regents, separated from System 1963 Angelo State added to System 1969 Three of System components (East Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, West Texas State) given independent boards of regents, separated from System 1975 System's name changed from State Senior College System to Texas State University System 1995 Lamar University components added to System by Legislature 2007 Angelo State transferred from System by Legislature1 point

Reading comprehension is such an underutilized skill on this board. Your #14 was #15 on the 2007 Rivals link I posted - I must assume the disconnect occurred because the list I linked did not include actual numbers beside each recruit. Anyway, I give up . D'Andre Wood is the greatest UNT recruit of this class (maybe even all-time) and everything ever posted on meangreensports.com must be the accepted as 100% factual and accurate, without question. I can certainly agree with that. I was talking with a TTech buddy yesterday about this year's Rivals rankings and we both agreed that Rivals seems to have been more generous with the 2 and 3 stars this year versus the past. And, they have been very quick this year to update a committed prospect's star ranking as soon as said prospect committed to a given school. This was true for several UNT commits within the past week. Vincent Eddie and Steven Ford are two examples - both had zero stars prior to committing. When Eddie de-committed and committed to La-Monroe, he still had zero stars. The next day Eddie had two stars and Ford had three stars. So, I'm left to ponder - is this class, with seemingly more Rivals 3-star prospects, any better than the past two classes, or is Rivals just getting more generous with their rankings?? Or not - these ratings don't mean squat.1 point

I understand the difference between position rankings and prospect rankings, but I'm not naive enough to believe some random, undocumented claim that a 2-10 SBC team just signed the 2007 #15 nationally-ranked athlete in the country without doing a little research to validate that claim. I'm also not convinced that the 36th best prospect in South Carolina could be the 15th best athlete in the nation. Jerrell Preister, 2010 Rivals #17 best prospect in South Carolina, ranked #59 at position "athlete" in the country Conelius Jones, 2010 Rivals #23 best prospect in South Carolina, unranked in position "athlete" in the country David Sims, 2009 Rivals #18 best prospect in South Carolina, ranked #40 in position "athlete" in the country Tyrell Edwards, 2009 Rivals #29 best prospect in South Carolina, ranked #82 in position "athlete" in the country Jaron Brown, 2008 Rivals #16 best prospect in South Carolina, ranked #57 in position "athlete" in the country J.T. Floyd, 2008 Rivals #20 best prospect in South Carolina, unranked in position "athlete" in the country Dontrelle Inman, 2007 Rivals #23 best prospect in South Carolina, unranked in position "athlete" in the country Just for kicks, here's Rivals 2007 rankings of best athletes in the country. Ironically, #15 on that list is a current member of the Mean Green, but it's not D'Andre Wood. But, please, don't take my word for it...do some more research....check Rivals, check Scouts, check ESPN. If you can find any source that shows D'Andre Wood as the #15 ranked athlete in the nation for 2007, I'd love to see it. Again, let me be VERY clear about it, I am not bashing D'Andre Wood or, in any way, trying to undersell his abilities to contribute to this team. In fact, I think he has the potential to be the biggest impact player of this class. However, I'm not buying the inaccuracies on the resume.1 point

Recited in deep smokey Al Pacino voice: I don't know what to say really. Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives all comes down to today. Either we heal as a team or we are going to crumble. dribble by dribble Jumper by Jumper till we're finished. We are in hell right now, gentlemen believe me and we can stay here and get the shit kicked out of us or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb out of hell. One rebound, at a time. Now I can't do it for you. I'm too old. I look around and I see these young faces and I think I mean I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make. I uh.... I pissed away all my money believe it or not. I chased off anyone who has ever loved me. And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror. You know when you get old in life things get taken from you. That's, that's part of life. But, you only learn that when you start losing stuff. You find out that life is just a game of backboard shattering slam dunks. So is basketball Because in either game life or basketball the margin for error is so small. I mean one half step too late or to early you don't quite make it. One half second too slow or too fast and you don't quite swat it in into the stands. The bounce passes we need are everywhere around us. They are in ever break of the game every minute, every second. On this team, we fight for that bucket On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us to pieces for that Monster Jam. We CLAW with our finger nails for that sweet no-look pass. Cause we know when we add up all those 3 pointers that's going to make the f-ing difference between WINNING and LOSING between LIVING and DYING. I'll tell you this in any fight it is the guy who is willing to die who is going to win that opening tip. And I know if I am going to have any life anymore it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that crunk alley-oop because that is what LIVING is. The six inches in front of your face. Now I can't make you do it. You gotta look at the guy next to you. Look into his eyes. Now I think you are going to see a guy who will shoot free throws with you. You are going to see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team because he knows when it comes down to it, you are gonna do the same thing for him. That's a team, gentlemen and either we heal now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That's basketball guys. That's all it is. Now, whattaya gonna do?1 point

From watching the videos last night at the Pourhouse, here is who I am looking forward to seeing: Zack Orr - 240 lb tough guy and possible down the road replacement for Tobi. Zack Olen - I liked the distance of his kick offs and appeared to have a quick release on FG's. Forlando Johnson- He looked very aggressive. D'Andre Wood - Blazing speed. Jaimize Olawale - Looks like he will make an instant impact here and should be the right type of Tight End for Canales' offense. Brandin Byrd - Lance Dunbar Starter Kit. Blake Dunham - I have different reasons for him...Have thoroughly enjoyed listening to his dad on my way to work every day for the last 16 years and hope Blake has a nice career with the only team he ever wanted to play for. I am sure George is still on Cloud 9.1 point

He did say the SOW would be on the field yes , but there are NCAA rules that they have to look at first to determine where it would be placed and how big it could be. NCAA doesn't allow things to be in certain places , can't be too big , can't interfer with yardlines etc Also it should be noted. George Dunham has been in Miami all week with 1310 covering the SuperBowl. He flew back in just for the day to help out and witness this event. He flew back late Wed night.1 point

Hockey talk - yes! I've been to 5 games this year, and, until my last two, the Stars have been drubbed in all of them. I wanted to blame the forwards and coasting Mike Modano, but I think I know why the forwards are doing too much: the defensemen are not very good. We were spoiled for years with top flight blueliners that were perfect for the system, but really, ever since we decided that Willie Mitchell wasn't worth keeping around after the big trade and Zubov suddenly died last year (I don't think many people appreciated that they were watching one of arguably the top 15-20 d-men to ever skate in the NHL), the backline is just an assortment of 3 and 4 level guys. I have a fan's affinity for all of them, but they can't impose there will on games, they don't play in good position most of the time and half of them can't even shoot the puck on net from the point. The team just needs a few more good weeks to climb as high as 5th, but unless Hicks decide his team shouldn't be $10M under the cap, it's going to be tough to win a playoff game, let alone series. The forwards are great, but they often try to do more than their system because they don't trust their D on either side of the ice. The D is full of young guys who might pan out, but they're really the equivalent of the 2004 Rangers pitching staff -- it's one good guy who should be a third starter (Robidas) and kids who might make the leap or flame out completely. I guess that makes Trevor Daley my new Kam Loe (minus the snakes). Also, I think if Turco had a B-B+ grade blueline in front of him, he could go right back to doing what he did for us. In fact, if he is traded to Philly or signs with, say, Detroit next year, I imagine we'll all curse him for being good again. Bottom line from this crazy person rant: Tom Hicks sucks.1 point
