  2. It's no secret I think Dodge is in way over his head and IF this team gets to 7 wins it will be due to his assistants coaching lights out. Also, I think if Riley improves substantially it will be due to a year of maturity and a real college OC putting him in good situations. With that said I have gotta tip my cap to Dodge's recruiting prowess. As it stands today we will bring in 7 three star kids...and had an 8th until he decided he'd rather spend his time in El Paso (?). No, this class is not on par with our metroplex brethren or even some SBC teams...but none of them were 2-10. We got juco help on the defense and SHOULD have the numbers and talent yo crank it up a notch in intensity. Now, a question. We should have 2 or 3 schollies left. Who do you think we will/should bring in? Do you think there are DT prospects we're keeping under wraps?

  3. With all the discussion about recruit ratings, I had some time and decided to see how Harry's projected starting lineup for 2010 rates for 'star power'.(Rivals) OFFENSE QB - Dodge *** RB - Dunbar ** WR - Stafford *** Xfer - rating when signed with OU WR - Jackson ** WR - Cole **** Xfer - rating when signed with OSU Wildcat - Carey ** T - Santiago ** G - Feeley ** C - Johnson ** T - Gill ** K - Olen ** DEFENSE DE - Akpunku ** DT - Jackson ** DT - Atkinson *** DE - Obi ** OLB- Johnson *** MLB- Robertson ** OLB- Herron ** Xfer rating when signed by SMU S - Smith *** S - Cook *** CB - Hill ** CB - McCord ** P - Atterbury ** *** Defensive recruits 2010 not in Harry's starting lineup Downing, Graham, Hughes.

  4. Hey Guys, Arnie is an old friend. And these comments are correct. He is a pot stirrer and does what he does to get a reaction. He knows plenty about North Texas because the 5 years that I worked with him it's pretty much what I talked about. Hell, for my wedding he got me two really nice North Texas folding chairs and a North Texas fleece blanket. He's even tried to get me to come back to Dallas for a potential gig at that station. I understand the reactions of some fans here, but if it helps, take it with a grain of salt. He's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but he has a loyal following and is good at what he does. Even though we are friends, I'm not the biggest fan of his style, but I see why it has worked. So maybe it helps a little to know that he's a really good guy and the best way to deal with him is to NOT give him a reaction. Trust me, it only throws fuel on the fire. I can't tell you the number of times I told myself to not take the bait and let him make his dumb comments. But he would always find a way to suck me in and I would get so frustrated. But that's what he wants. It's Arnie being Arnie. Patrick

  8. Thank you, thank you. I credit my fanatical zeal for basketball and love of testicle-related linguistic trivia. And all the little people who made it possible. Looking at the Members section... I'm locked in a dogfight with KingDL1 for highest overall reputation. It's an honor to be up there with him. Though I'm amazed he hasn't gotten more -1's, considering all the terrible things he's said about your mothers. Awful, vulgar things... But I'm sure you all have your reasons for supporting him. If you all can get past the fact that he hates America and all that we stand for, and that he killed your childhood pets... Who am I to question the wisdom of such a fine group of people? I salute your forgiving natures.

  10. Yep, and Tulsa just hired former Lake Travis HS HC, Chad Morris, to be their Co-Offensive Coordinator. The biggest difference between these two hires and ours is that the above coaches will have time to adapt and grow into the college game with an experienced college staff, whereas Todd Dodge was basically thrown into the fire and forced to learn on the fly. Several HS coaches have made successful transitions from HS HC to college position coach and then onto college HC, but few have done so in jumping straight from HS HC to college HC.

  13. I really don't give two craps about your recurring lecture series on recruiting services. I'm speaking to a number of posters here who find one exception to a rule and pleasure themselves to it while falling asleep every night. If you have a better system and sudden new-found belief in the power of positive thinking, good for you, but that was one of the most non-essential soliloquies in the recent history of the board. And yes, I'm having a bad day, but sometimes playing Ike Turner just feels good. I'll still bake you a cake when I calm down, and I might even write you a song.

  14. This was interesting to me. Many have probably already seen this littl;e clip. It's a bit long, but the guy did start up the weather channel and has been around climate and climate study for some time. It was interesting to me...take a look if you want...gives one something to consider and "ponder" between football seasons. http://www.kusi.com/home/78477082.html?video=pop&t=a

  17. A comment that was made in another thread gave me an idea. How many walk-ons have made a noticable contribution to North Texas football? They didn't have to be all-conference or even starters. Who were some that you remember? Off the top of my head, the two most memorable walk-ons for me have been Casey Fitzgerald and Jordan Case. I'm also curious as to what position tends to have the most walk-ons, or rather, the most walk-ons that have made a contribution to the team.

  18. Folks who date back to the late 70's and earlier have seen better times. If one started following NT post 1980 or so - these are the salad days of Men's basketball. In fact for a continuous run - these might be the best four years since the 1920's. Maybe we have stalled, but it's hard to really say that for certain when we just won the most league games we ever had a year ago. If you're winning more than before - that means you're not just treading water. Let's just wait for both- pro and con- till the end of the year okay?

  22. First...read this. I know its a lot of words but it will help put in perspective for you what it takes to build a winning basketball program from next to nothing...which is essentially what JJ had to work with. Second...we have 8 seniors to replace after the 2011 season - Dom, Josh, TT, Cam, Mangrum, Thomas, George and Shorter. We'll have a returning group of Hogans, Knox, Holman, Williams and whoever we land in 2010. Third...if anybody ought to have patience and perspective it is the 40, 50, 60 ect. something person who should have some kind of grasp as to how bad UNT basketball has historically been. Me, I've been fortunante to only see JJ-era UNT basketball...but based on the fact that he owns exactly 1/2 of our NCAA bids and in just 8+ years of coaching has moved to second all-time in wins at UNT I feel very confident in saying that there wasn't much of a basketball tradition before my time. So thats why I'll listen to the opinions of those like Buford Julep, Cooley, untgeorge and SUMG, all of whom have high expectations, but also have enough basketball knowledge and perspective to realize that this program is in better shape than at any point during their fandom.

  23. The Super Pit, in my oppinion, had a much better feeling as a top basketball facility in the area when it had the score board hanging over the court. That may be just me? Many of the pro and top college facilities still have that. But comparing who we are recruiting against in the DFW area, the Super Pit has been head and shoulders above TCU, UTA and SMU. Regardless, it's more of a positive than a negative. There is no argueing that. As for building like a Gonzaga or Butler? After next year we will have 9 seniors to replace. Considering we are giving out ships to people who couldn't guard a stop sign, among other things we lack in, and the fact this team has NEVER played any thing remotely close to a consistent solid defense, all attributed to coaching, we may be in for a very long wait. Of course, if I were in my 20's still and watching from a distance my patience and attitude may be different than it is currently? Rick

  24. (sigh) Ok, once again there is nothing wrong with the WAC. If NT was in the Mountain or Western TIme Zone it would make sense to join it. It doesn't seem to register with everyone that Denton is NOT in either of those two time zones. Because we are not in either of those two time zones, the media in Texas does not cover those WACy folks very well. During Bowl games that often take place at 3pm or 5 pm in the West, they do get coverage. But very, very little for regular season games. The games end after the newspapers have to go to press and all you get is a single line "see the web for more information." About 3 people out of every 100 subscribers then look up the story. On the Sundays after most college football games there is this organization called the NFL that also plays football. NFL coverage pushes out college coverage on Mondays because 1. far more people follow the NFL than college and 2 the college game was two days ago and is thus now old news. TV newscasts happen at 10pm in our time zone. That is 8pm on the West coast so night games are generally just around halftime. Thus the TV coverage is "NT is currently playing school X. The current score is X. In other sports...." Please don't try to suggest ESPN as an alternative. Look at the ratings differences between local TV stations and ANY cable channel. Local news has been losing viewers for years, but they still have ratings in double digits while cable channels local ratings generally begin with a decimal point and often a decimal point followed by a zero and THEN a number. Resect for the WACy schools. Really? You honestly think that? Was SMU, Rice, TCU or Tulsa respected for being WACy? Obviously not. Ask a TCU fan how Wyoming is did last year and they aren't sure. Ask about San Jose State and you will probably get an answer of "who?" A few years back, the WAC approached NT, U of Louisiana and Arky State about changing conferences. All of them looked at the real financial data that was available through the Louisiana state government thanks to La Tech and all said thanks but no thanks. As a result, the WAC took U of Idaho which was their last choice, the choice they wanted to avoid if at all possible. The last choice for the WAC was the only school interested. Let's get more recent. What do the two WACy schools to have been to BCS bowls think of the WAC? They both want to leave. In fact Hawaii, Fresno, Nevada, La Tech and Boise has all been actively campaigning to get out of the conference that some assert gets more respect. Thats over half the conference who have actively campaigned to leave! While many SBC schools would jump at the chance to join CUSA, only FAU has actively campaigned to join another conference. Even Western Kentucky has decided the SBC was better than the alternative of the MAC. And please don't suggest being WACy would increase NT's home attendance. The only school in the WAC that wasn't in the Big West is Hawaii. Our attendance was not great when those same school visited before. The only school of the bunch with a higher profile is Boise. La Tech's attendance does not make a huge jump when they visit now. Of course there is a lot less alternative choices for the sports dollar in Ruston than in the DFW market. If we were the University of North New Mexico, then the WAC would make sense. We are not. Suggesting otherwise ignores sports reality. Don't go WACy.

  27. I love the Super Pit. It's a perfectly adequate arena, and, unlike some of our other venues, it isn't any sort of liability in recruiting. But calling it a "great" facility isn't accurate. The best I can say for it is that, of all the 8,000+ seat arenas in the Sun Belt, the Super Pit is tied for 3rd. Maybe. Diddle Arena and the Mitchell Center have the Pit beaten, hands down. I don't much care for the Cajundome, personally. But objectively, every criticism I have about it applies just as accurately to the Pit. So, at best... Tied for 3rd based on personal taste. And I've never seen the Convocation Center (ASU) or Murphy Center (MTSU). Based on pictures, I think the Murphy Center might have one up on the Pit, too. If you're willing to go smaller than 8-10k seats... The Stephens Center is a fantastic venue. And when you start comparing it to some of the other basketball barns out there... It doesn't stack up to most of the ones I've been lucky enough to visit in the past few years. Houston's arena is better than ours. Tech, Oklahoma State, A&M, Texas... Those are to be expected, given their financial advantages. Rice, even though the bleacher seats suck for a fan, has a facility that works better as a recruiting tool than the Pit does. From the baseline bleachers, it's annoying. From down on the floor, that place looks phenomenal. The building as a whole is very impressive. Baylor has the worst Big 12 basketball arena I've ever seen: the Ferrell Center. And it's still bigger, newer, and nicer than the Pit. The Pit is fine, but it's nothing spectacular compared to what else is out there. We're not dealing with an albatross like UT-Arlington and Houston Baptist... But again, we're talking about what may be the 4th or 6th best arena in the Sun Belt. It's not like a kid is going to come here over Texas or Baylor because the Pit is a sparkling gem. The Pit is nice. I love it. It's a great place to watch a game. It's not an embarrassment, like Fouts is. But it isn't anything spectacular.

  35. Here we go again. Nathan is NOT a dual-threat quarterback. Riley had 5 rushing touchdowns; Nathan 0. Tune may be a better pocket passer because of his height but that does not make him a better quarterback for the spread. Riley made mistakes as we all know. Many of those can be overcome with coaching. Some of the mistakes weren't all Riley's fault. I can remember a couple of instances where the receiver broke off his route. He had several fumbles by trying to fight for extra yardage instead of just taking what he had and protecting the ball. Those are freshman type mistakes. If Canales can't cure those then he very well may try another quarterback but let's see what happens first. For all of his interceptions, Riley still tied for 7th in completion percentage in the nation. So, at least most of his passes went to the good guys. By the way, B.J. Daniels, Chico's former protege, was one of the highest in the nation in yards per attempt. I'm looking forward to seeing what Canales can do with Riley who completed 14% more of his passes than Daniels. Their rushing average was almost identical. And, unlike some of you, I don't believe that the fix is on. We'll put the best quarterback for the system on the field.

  38. People can eat lots of things - meat, vegetables, processed cheese. In some parts of the world, they eat dogs and cats. Others eat insects. The Cubans eat pigeons because their socialist economy is so great. The thing is we've got all of this handwringing all the time about what will happen if this or that happens. What will happen is this - we'll all get up and eat something, then go to work. Global warming has never been about science, anyway. It's always been about two things: (1) making the United States fork over even more money to crappily run countries (2) giving the leftists in America complete control of the government and economy all for the sake of their bogeyman. Well guess what leftists? Suck it! You'll never pull the wool over our eyes - and, therefore, the money out of our pockets - to fund your chicken little theories to their fanatical end. I'm waiting for the day when all of these environmentalists walk the walk of the talk they are talking and move away from the rest of society and cling to their beloved "Mother Earth" for their survival. There's a whole lot of open land in Africa, environmentalists. Grab a plane tickets and go fight for your survival with the lions and hyenas. I'd love to see the results. Boing. Boing. Boing. That's the sound of an ape bouncing your head all over the Serengeti. Meanwhile, I'm home in Frisco, Texas in my air conditioned home, drinking cold Pepsi Cola out of a can, microwaving a chicken pot pie, and commuting 44 miles a day back and forth in my own car, and remarking to my SUV-driving, child-bearing wife about how nice it is to turn on the news and not have hear from the environmentalists anymore.

  39. And while we're talking about what stats don't tell let's remember that what Riley's already high INT number doesn't tell is that he didn't play the two toughest teams on our schedule. That's right, against Bama and Troy Tune threw a whopping 1 INT total. For those scoring at home that's 0.5 a game...or 1.0 less than Riley's 1.5 a game. How many turnovers do you think Alabama and Troy could have squeezed out of wonder boy? I can see how comparing stats doesn't sit well with you. And I even think Riley should start.

  41. I don't doubt Stephens will get her full contract to turn her program around. Note, I say her program because she inherited a pretty good squad. I hope Stephens quickly succeeds for the sake of NT and there have been signs, like the tournament win in her first year and the win over USA this year, that she may be capable. I will state the reasons I have to question Stephens' hire and performance thus far. I thought there were better and certainly more experienced coaches available, and the emphasis on "94 Feet of Heat" in the hiring process was questionable. For more upsetting to me however, was her handling of her players in her first year. I read a lot of junk on this board about how she was getting rid of the malcontents and players who didn't want to work or sacrifice or players that were just not right for her system. I could only guess that most of those posters had never bothered to watch much NT girls basketball because most of those girls played hard and although many fans were dissatisfied with Slinker as a coach, I have never heard anyone complain about the overall character of her players. In year one, before the season even started one of Slinker's recruits left the school and then we saw a continuous series of suspensions of this player or another. The year ended with the suspension of what was before almost a sure NT Hall of Fame player. It is my belief that an experienced coach should have been able to work much more effectively with the players she inherited. If the players are not capable of playing one style than adapt an offense and defense that can be successful. Again this was a veteran team who was picked relatively high in pre-season conference standings. Year two begin in similar fashion. Stephen's selected MVP, only a freshman, left the team as did a number of others. Several of the recruits did not enroll and another left shortly after the beginning of the season. The end result was that NT is playing this year with 11 players or 4 under the maximum. To put that into perspective, many football fans were concerned with the APR sanctions which lowered NT's football squad by 4 to a maximum of 81 players. Play this year has been a few ups with a lot more downs. The win/loss record is disappointing; but more concerning is NT's total uncompetitiveness in a number of games. Not uncompetitiveness in the normal sense were a team is outmatched and gets beat twenty or thirty points. Way too many games have been basically decided in the first five minutes and then are completely under the opponents coach's prerogative to decide how much they want to run up the score. I think most would agree that Stephens is off to a very rocky start. Likewise, most would like to see her become a brilliant success. My personal opinion is that she was not ready and has make a lot of errors, but I like her fire and I have not given up on her ability to turn it around.
