Whoosh. That's the sound of North Texas passing us by... Wait, that's just a bad habit.7 points

First off I'd like to say UNT had quite the cheering section in a New Haven, CT bar tonight...count the times thats ever been said. Secondly...are we seriously complaining about bench production after a win at Diddle? Anyone who knows me or reads what I write about basketball knows that I want and love a scorer off the bench...I called for and loved the move of TT to 6th man when Thomas was healthy/eligible...but that said the bench did far more than score tonight...especially Mangrum who wore down Slaughter for a good portion of the first half. This was a dog-fight between the two teams picked to win the conference before injuries took their toll and it was a hell of a basketball game. Learn how to enjoy a win, especially one against a good team...all of you...your lack of knowledge and perspective is becoming both tiresome and embarrassing.7 points

There's only about 90 other programs in the country where the head coach is not involved in play calling on one side of the ball or the other. I'm sure those fans are wondering the same thing. Bottom line, this lets him be a manager/CEO type and that's really what you want. His emphasis will always be on the offensive side of the ball but he can be more focused on game management, when to call timeouts, when to go for it on 4th, etc. And I think you'll see a marked improvement on that regard with this hire and 'release of duties'.3 points

You're not getting it. We could have fouled their coach. If his job is really on the line this weekend like they're saving on Hilltopper Haven, let's see him do something about it.3 points

Yep. Double teaming a guy 40 feet away from the basket as he takes an off balance shot, up by 3 points with time expiring... The smart play is to foul. Every time. A shot like that is practically automatic, like an extra point or an uncontested layup.3 points

I believe you've missed the purpose of the point system. It wasn't created so that you can play on it like a kid on a playground. Just because you don't like some of us doesn't mean you give a negative point just for grins.2 points

The up 3, end game foul/don't foul decision is a 50/50 coaching style call...its by no means the 100%, no-brainer play some people on here are making it out to be. I'm with Green Lantern (in so many ways...) on the no foul side of things...you commit to 15 seconds of balls-out defense and if they still end up knocking down a 3 (or in this case a prayer 3) you tip your hat and get after it in OT like last night...I'm of the belief you're bringing in too many variables with fouling late game. And George is without question our MVP this season...now 7 double-doubles, at least 7 boards in all but one game...and he seems to be getting better and better now that he has a a healthy Eric Tramiel next to him.2 points

Good win for the Green. I'm also of the mind that you don't foul in that situation at the end of the game. We didn't give them a good look, played tough defense & he ended up throwing up a prayer. I was actually more disapointed that Josh missed the front end of the two FT's that got us in the situation in the first place. He hasn't been nearly as sharp from the FT line this year. Even though they hit that prayer, I was still pretty confident going into overtime. Without Evans in the game, they really had a hard time containing our bigs. Props to Big George who continues to be a bright spot. He works hard night in a night out. I wish I could call him a "lunch pail" kinda guy.2 points

To honor Walt Parker? How about the possibly going real old school at homecoming and having '68' as the logo of the helmet for that game a la Alabama? RV's board-droppers...get his attention for something like this. Also, the new stadium...Walt Parker Stadium? Think about it. Who did more on and off the field for more years for North Texas than Walt?2 points

We've hired his wife as the new OC for the football team, just so we'll have another Jones to fire in the event that we don't beat MTSU. Win by 30 points, or they both get the boot.2 points

Any win over WKU at Bowling Green is a big win. Other than NT usual slow start, NT played very well. On the refereeing, if I was WKU and had got 30-37 free throws which kept them in the game I would not complain too much. I don't think that foul was as obvious as many seem to think, they were both going for the ball and the WKU player getting rolled over occurred after the ball was out of play. Unless some type of fragrant foul is involved you don't see many fouls called when the clock is not running. The fouling with a three point deficient is also not as great a strategy as many seem to think. Although rare, I've seen those kind of fouls called intentional and games lost. Also there is the chance of a made free throw and an intentional miss being turned into two points. Again not a high percentage play, but probably better odds then making a 40 foot off-balance shot. A foul on a three point attempt would again be a horrible conclusion to an intentional foul. Also NT would had to throw the ball in with an one point lead if the intentional foul had led to two made free throws. Fouling in NT's game end situation can be a good play but it is definitely not without risks. Back to the game, a lot of chat on the lack of production out of the bench. Obviously, they did enough and with the possible exception of one three pointer taken by Holman, they didn't take bad shots. I actually like a tighter rotation than what JJ was using for most of the year. The team overall played good defense and given the fact that Tramiel spend a lot of time on the bench and White was playing injured, I though they had definitely one of their best games of the year. Shorter is really coming on and with this development, NT really has a good starting unit. The game against the MUTS is shaping up to be the biggest of the year so far.2 points

i'm glad as hell they won and aren't trying to argue anything, it just seems odd to not have ANY bench scoring, yet still win. the assists help and do show that the bench is producing in the game, but i'd like to seem some real point contribution like has happened in the past. in the end, who cares, the boys won a tough game and hopefully won't be drained on saturday against the muts2 points

Shouldn't have been an issue because Tristan should have gotten a foul on the 3 point attempt. And the no-call on the play in front of WKU's bench was no worse than the and-one Tramiel didn't get on the layup.2 points

Yes but if you watch replay.. Tristan?... was fouled on his shot. Edit: NT03 sorry gues we were posting at the same time.2 points

If Cole is 100%, I have no doubt you are right. He was one of the most exciting offensive players I have ever seen in high school. As far as Stradford, he would have been a starter if he had been ruled eligible last year, so you may be correct. However, based on the spring game and a few pre-season practices; I question his hands. I though he missed too many balls that he should have caught. Over the years, NT has not got a lot of big name transfers, however there were a few of the bluest of blue chips comming out of high school that utimately ended up at NT. Anothey Bridges, Reggie Finch and J.C. Hollins were all highly lauded and none really turned into stars for the Green. I hope Stratford, Cole and the others really excel but it is far from a sure thing.2 points

Don't you understand? They are so wise and important that they deserve these perks. They are doing their part by pointing out how you are screwing up the world, therefore their own rules don't apply to themselves. Just stay in your place, do what your told, and don't question anything they do. Reminds me of the news piece I saw on Fox where Gore was imside giving a speach on the horrors of carbon emissions, meanwhile 5 limos sat outside idling while waiting for Gore. They had been instructed to keep the cars runnings. Really no difference between Gore and Bernie Maydoff (Sp?). I guess Bernie took the money directly from people, while Gore will do it through Cap and Trade.2 points

Besides the obvious fact that he's developed games plans for I-A/FBS school for well over a decade, I think Canales would give us the opportunity to open the recruiting up beyond what we've seen in the past - even moreso than when Dickey was here. The guy was at Snow JC for years, and they are a regular JUCO power. His years of service there, added to what Gandy is already bringing to the table, would pretty much give us JUCO pull from coast to coast. Like Texas, Florida is a state that produces a wealth of football talent. Canales has been helping USF recruit against the instate Florida powers with some success. I like the idea of having that known connection to Florida prep coaches. There's alot of speed in Florida and if Canales could just bring in one per year that'd be a plus. And, Florida kids - like Texas kids - seem to have no reservation about leaving the state to get playing time. Sorry guys, I'm just excited that we really may be getting this guy on board. He's got experience in the Pac-10, the ACC, the Big East, and the NFL in additional to coaching with one of the godfathers of the college pass game, LaVell Edwards at BYU. This would be the biggest coaching hire at UNT since we had Hayden Fry on the sideline. I'm really hoping this dream comes true. We've needed some really great news here for a long time.1 point

I generally avoid these threads like a syphilitic whore... But I saw this article and it reminded me of this damn thread title that WOULDN'T GET OFF MY SCREEN ALL WEEK. Union membership dropped 10% last year. If they bought and paid for Obama, they don't seem to be getting their money's worth. And they probably can't afford to keep paying the price tag.1 point

NT80 is right; there will likely be a change or three that we don't know about now. On the offensive side my only change would be to pick Carey over Outlaw. The defense is much more complicated. I would hope that we don't have two watch fob defensive ends. I'd rather have a power rusher on the strong side; either Anyiam or Weber. At linebacker I don't see Herron starting. I'm not even certain about Johnson. Phillips seemed to get better as the season progressed and he gained more confidence. Graham is such a ball of fire I don't think that he can be kept out of the starting lineup. This position is rapidly becoming a strength. To the forementioned add Penson and Prior and you should be able to find a starting lineup unless Orr breaks through as a true freshman. For my money I'd move Ira Smith to corner, pair him with Royce Hill and have Hughes and Hill play the safeties.1 point

The kid was surrounded, near halfcourt, with just a few ticks remaining. Our defense had already forced the ball out of a good scoring poition(we tipped it near halfcourt and they had to scramble to track it down). At that point the smarter move is to just let it play out. If you wanted to foul earlier - fine.1 point

Just to clarify... I'm not saying that we don't need bench scoring. And I'm not trying to argue with radiogreen just for the sake of arguing. Considering the way we played tonight's game, I'm not surprised (or concerned) that we didn't get any bench points. It was an aberration, both in approach and in results from the use of our bench. It may hurt us on Saturday when the guys are a little more tired than they usually would be... But I'll take the win in the bank and hope for the best on Saturday, no problem.1 point

Tonight, saying that the bench didn't score is effectively the same thing as saying Mangrum didn't score. And he only attempted 2 shots in 16 minutes. He did have 4 assists and 3 boards, so it's not like he didn't do anything out there. It wasn't his best night, but he did bring us something besides points. Spencer played 11 minutes and took no shots. He's not really a scoring option for us, and I was pretty satisfied with what he did do while he was out there. Holmen played 5 total minutes. Alzee Williams played four. Matlock got a 1 minute sniff of the court in the first half. This was not our typical game where we use our bench a lot. If Mangrum doesn't get 4 assists and pulls up to hit 4 jumpers instead... It's the same amount of points. Spencer doesn't score for us, and nobody else played more than one or two trips up and down the floor per half. Not sure what's up with Richard Thomas... Is he still hurt? Did it get mentioned in the pregame show?1 point

Really? I want these guys tried in an open court so there can be no backlash of it being a "kangaroo court". As a matter of fact shortly after 9/11 I heard the same thing from the White House. Holding them in a cell with no hope of a trial is only fueling the fire. If they are guilty, what do you have to hide? Vengeance is not justice.1 point

How about scout and rivals who rate our class toward the bottom in D1? Can we sarcastically write off their "expert" opininions...or should we do as you are always so quick to suggest, defer to "those who get paid to do this"?1 point
-
EXACTLY! It's great to see all the experts let us know that this class is not ranked very high in their humble opinion, that is. I know they have some "qualifications" to make such statements, but recruiting HS kids is a crap-shoot. You get top recruits that can't qualify grade-wise, who get injured in fall practice, who end up hating the coach and transferring and/or who simply look good on paper as a college player but never pan out...you get the exact reverse as well ala Patrick Cobbs. You also get the "lesser" rated player who stays a "lesser rated" player in college, etc. Like I said it's a crap shoot. You do the very best you can as a coach/recruiter, find players you think can play in YOUR system, who might get bigger, faster and stronger and you go with that. We'll all see how this class pans out once they sign and hit the field. On paper, it is looking like a another good class for TD and Company. I also agree...can you imagine the class TD might be able to recruit next season after winning those min. seven games this season???? Wow, can't wait. Be still my Mean Green heart! GO MEAN GREEN.1 point

Arguments could be made that Obama has not done enough (or anything) to stop this trend, but I think he could hardly be blamed for "doubling the unemployment rate". It also appears that job losses may be stabilizing, hopefully to start decreasing soon...1 point

I don't mean to cause another politcal debate here, but was that really a response to the issues that Obama discussed, or a glorified GOP pep rally? Most State of the Union speeches give me tired head because of all the standing and clapping, but the Governor didn't really bring a counter point to much at all. I heard more criticism this morning on CNN from Rudy Giuliani. Thought last night was kinda weak and a bit of dog and pony show. Good idea that didn't really leave me with anything.1 point

Grandgreen, I don't think that there's anyway you see Cole and Stratdord on the sidelines come the first play of next season. Cole was rated the same as Dez Bryant coming out of high school, same class. He will be an absolute beast and can't wait to see him in spring ball.1 point
