Interesting comments concerning the new branding at North Texas.

Shawn Ballard, 17, a senior at Seguin High School, said he was impressed by literature he received about UNT in the mail.

"I like UNT's logo. It's real clean, and it stands out," he said.

Seguin senior Shawn Zark said he went to a football game at UNT and saw the logo and school colors everywhere. It was unmistakable to him that this was a school with strong traditions.

"The first thing that comes to mind about UNT is the tradition," he said. "Big Green and all that."

Some of the high school seniors said they see UT-Arlington as a commuter school, something that makes officials there cringe. But UT-Arlington and UNT have the same portion of their student body living on campus, 17 percent.

Saxe said UNT has escaped the commuter-school image at least partially because of the spirit-building football games, where the stadium seats are a sea of that green UNT brand.

"UNT is as much a commuter school as we are," Saxe said. "The funny thing is a school gets an image, and it's hard to break out of that image."

Now someone tell me how Mean Green football isn't vital to NT's image?

I saw that in yesterday's FWST, too, Rick. The part I thought was funny was the one calling us, uh, "Big Green?" smile.gif Well, that was close enought I suppose.

GOD BLESS TEXAS!

This article needs to be made available to every athletic hating faculty and staff member at UNT. If we expect to advance as a university, athletics must be part of the equation.

Nice article, but the quote from one of the people involved in the logo design broke my brain:

UNT assistant design professor Eric Ligon said the space between the letters in "North Texas" in the logo he helped design portrays the university's openness. He said the tips on the ends of the letters give the UNT brand a more academic feel.

And the points in the "N" signify the pointy-headed thinking in excessively specialized academic pursuits like communication design.

If your job is to find deeper meaning in font spacing, have the good sense to keep that information to yourself. It looks completely ridiculous to the outside world, which defeats some of the marketing efforts you're trying to achieve with the new logo in the first place.

Okay, so the same percentage of students live on campus at UNT and UTA. How many students live within a few miles of campus? I suspect that UNT has a far greater number of students living near campus than does UTA. This probably has something to do with the fact that UNT has put some distant between itself and the "commuter school" association - more so than UTA.
