TROY, Ala. — There might not have been enough footballs in Veterans Memorial Stadium to fulfill the promise North Texas head coach Dan McCarney made to his team Saturday following a milestone 38-33 win over Troy.
McCarney stood up in the middle of a raucous locker room and promised every senior who was there a game ball of his own to remember the day.
And there was a lot to remember.
UNT picked up its first win on the road in the McCarney era, toppled five-time defending Sun Belt champion Troy for the first time since 2003 and kept alive its hopes of winning six games and becoming bowl-eligible.
The Mean Green (4-6, 3-3 Sun Belt) now has won more games than it has in any season since 2004, the last time UNT went to a bowl game.
“It’s a huge win for us,” McCarney said “[Troy] is a championship program and the standard in our conference. They show how to win and do things the right way. With all the players who were injured or went down today, for us to rise up and make the plays to win makes this one of the really special things I have been a part of.”
