DENVER — Karen Aston will be the new women's basketball coach at the University of Texas, Baylor University coach Kim Mulkey said.

Mulkey said Aston — a former assistant coach under Mulkey at Baylor — had texted her with the news. University of Texas regents will meet Monday to discuss authorizing UT officials to conduct contract negotiations with a new coach.

"This has to be her dream job," Mulkey said Saturday after Baylor's hourlong practice Saturday at the Pepsi Center.

Neither Aston, 47, nor Texas women's athletics director Chris Plonsky could be reached Saturday. They were not checked into the hotel reserved for coaches and university administrators in Denver for the NCAA women's tournament. Plonsky said Thursday that Aston met with UT officials last week. Aston is believed to be the only candidate to interview on the UT campus.

DENVER — As many of the top players and coaches in women's college basketball gather here for the Final Four, the University of Texas appears close to settling on its next head coach.

Two sources inside the Texas athletic department said Friday that University of North Texas coach Karen Aston likely will succeed Gail Goestenkors, who resigned recently after the Longhorns lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

University of Texas regents will meet Monday to discuss authorizing UT officials to conduct contract negotiations with a new coach. Aston, who combines ties to Texas with coaching success at other schools, met with UT officials this week, women's athletics director Chris Plonsky said Thursday.

Aston, 47, is believed to be the only candidate to interview on campus this week.

While serving as an assistant coach to Jody Conradt from 1998 to 2006, Aston was known as a very capable recruiter. The Horns were 173-83 in that span, reaching the NCAA tournament seven times, advancing to the Sweet 16 twice and playing in the 2003 Final Four.

What we lost

By 97and03, in GoMeanGreen.com,

It took me longer than I expected, but here is my look at the gaps in the lineup caused by graduation. Vito has also looked at some of this, so I tried to use some of his info where relevant.

Looking forward to some discussion as Spring Practice begins.
