Many of you know Troy Kokjohn, who was a 4-year letterman and outstanding special teams contributor for the Mean Green and his dad Kevin. Troy and Kevin are both big Mean Green fans and supporters. Troy has now graduated from UNT and has started his own company. We are pleased to announce that Kokjohn Deep Snapping will now be advertising as a sponsor of GoMeanGreen.com.

As some of you know, my son will be a 9th grader this year and we have been fortunate enough to enlist the services of Kokjohn Long Snapping in his quest to be a deep snapper and center for his high school team. If you have kids, or have family and friends with kids that play or plan to play football, you should let them know about this fine service. In just one session, we saw a dramatic improvement in my son's technique. For many kids, deep snapping is a great way to get on the field early in their high school careers. I also like to see us support our own and as many of you will attest, there are not better UNT fans than the Kokjohn family. I encourage you to check out their website at http://www.longsnapperlessons.com/ to learn more and spread the word! GMG!

The city is only on the hook for the convention center not the Hotel/Restaurant or land. The goal is a proposal that is self funded by a combination sources including hotel/motel taxes, convention center rentals, etc. UNT will lease the land for the project. The O'Reilly Family (O'Reilly Autoparts) will finance the hotel and restaurant. People need to get the facts. They hope to begin construction in January 2013, and complete by summer 2014.

This facility will result in increase in hotel/motel and sales tax.

Unfortunately, there was no break out the convention center cost. One has to assume that the12 story luxury hotel and restaurant would be the lion cost of the 85 million.

UNT picked up a commitment from Paris linebacker Sed Ellis yesterday. I talked with Ellis and his high school coach Berry Bowman for a few minutes this afternoon.

Ellis is one of those all-around good high school athletes. He normally plays defensive end for Paris, but moved to outside linebacker for the last half of last season.

The move turned out to be one that helped Ellis’ stock. He played well enough at the spot for five or six games to be named to the All-District 15-3A team as a linebacker.

He went on to say, “I was impressed with the number of alumni that came to our game and alumni support is no small matter to me”. He was referring to the nearly 10,000 NT fans that made the trip to Austin to see NT lose by three points.

In early 1977 North Texas was making a push for the Southwest Conference led by Director of Athletics Hayden Fry. Coming off of 7-5 in 1975, and 7-6 in 1976, North Texas was poised to have its best season ever in the fall of 1977 that ultimately led to a 10-1 record. The basketball team led by Bill Blakely was also flying high coming off a first and only national ranking in 1976. Things were looking good. North Texas had gone Independent in 1975 leaving The Missouri Valley Conference starting its push to bigger and better things…..The SWC.

Hayden Fry had turned a program around. Wins at Tennesee, SMU (1977), and near misses against Texas and Florida state had the program proudly perched. The flying worm helmets and Kawasaki green uniforms are fondly remembered by alums that were around during those glory years.

So what happened?

Concerns among SWC members over too many conference games played a part (The NCAA was at that time considering adding the 12th game). Pat Truly From the Star Telegram wrote in his column that The SWC was a 7 member conference that was stable for years, but bowed to political pressure by bringing in the west Texas factor (Texas Tech). Houston was also admitted in 1971 but only after a courtship that lasted nearly two decades. Revenue sharing was also mentioned, but in most people’s minds in was the politics. Houston and Tech were admitted after having support of big names like LBJ and John Connolly. North Texas just didn’t have any good old boy sponsors in the capital, and If none of the other schools were looking to sponsor North Texas, NT was going nowhere.

Most know what happened next. After a 10-1 season in 1977 and a very respectable 9-2 record in 1978, Hayden Fry moved on to greener pastures. The school moved back to 1-AA and in 1982 joined the Southland conference. In a matter of 5 years things went down hill and it took almost 20 years to recover.

I’m sure plenty here will add their thoughts and memories.

As most on this forum know, UNT just named its Apogee Stadium media area as "The Bill Mercer Press Club.

The video talks about Bill Mercer's numerous caps he has worn since the the late 1950's here in the DFW Metroplex starting
with his even being downtown at the Dallas police station covering the Kennedy assasination, his being the "Voice of....the Mean Green, the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, Saturday Night Wresting, etc, etc, etc, and with Bill Mercer "etc", ie, the abbreviation for "so on and so on" could be written many more times.

Great job for those who produced the above video of whom I'd bet would be the duo of George Dunham, ie, present Voice of the Mean Green and Dallas sports personality at the radio station we all know as KTCK 1310 "The Ticket." along with UNT AD associate and official Color Commentator of Mean Green football and basketball, Hank Dickenson.

GMG!

PS: Mr. Mercer, don't know if you frequent this board or not, but if you do it was a great honor for many of us on this forum who did get to meet you. I'll never forget being with you, Craig Way and Ron Shanklin for one quarter of a MG football game back in the mid 80's because of a silent auction bid I won at one of Jim Hobdy's Dallas Mean Green get-togethers. I still have pics of all that back in the day as a keepsake.

May you have many, many more sunsets. Mr. Mercer, and I know many on this board who've met you over the decades may want to express their own thoughts, too.

God bless...
