9. Tony Mitchell, SO, F, North Texas
The decision by Mitchell, who originally committed to Missouri but never made it to Columbia because of academic issues, to return to school was probably the most surprising of the offseason. His level of talent is rarely seen in the Sun Belt, and he figures to single-handedly turn the Mean Green into one of America's favorite mid-majors this season.

In its first Sun Belt Conference game of the season, the Mean Green fell to the Troy Trojans 14-7.

Going 0-2 in the red zone on offense, a 14 percent third down conversion rate and poor execution from the kicking team were all factors in UNT dropping to 1-3 on the season.

“Before you start winning, you have to stop losing,” head coach Dan McCarney said. “Frustration is an understatement.”

In a postgame press conference, McCarney said that the practice week prior to the Troy game was the best in two years, but the Mean Green could not translate that success to game day.

The special teams unit also didn’t translate its practice success into the game. Junior kicker Zach Olen and freshman kicker Zach Paul struggled in the game.
After making a 57-yard field goal in practice last week, Olen, who missed an extra point and had a 45-yard field goal blocked against KSU, missed 40 and 47-yard field goals on back-to-back drives in the second quarter. After halftime, Paul came on as a replacement and missed a 27-yard attempt.

The next two games for the Mean Green will take place on the road, as the team travels to face Florida Atlantic and Houston.

“It sickens me to lose that game the way we did tonight, but the good news is we do have two-thirds of a season in front of us,” McCarney said. “There are a lot of opportunities out there, and how we handle a setback like this will be a real measure of where we go with this football team.”

Found these at the RaceTrac right next to the Sam's Club at Rayzor Ranch. I go there almost daily and they have never carried UNT gear, just A&M, Texas, Baylor, and TCU. If you get a chance, swing by there while you're in town for the game Saturday and let's show them that Mean Green gear will sell! And this is football related because we need to buy these for the football game.

Our Brick Wall

By meaniegreenie, in GoMeanGreen.com,

Two years. Let me repeat that...Two Years!!

Two years from now, things are going to be a lot different around here. We're gonna' look around and wonder how far we've come in such little time. It's gonna' make the wasted time of the Dodge era seem even more disgraceful. But all of that is going to be in our rear-view mirror. This football team is headed in the right direction and with a lot of force.

There's gonna' be some setbacks. We're going to lose some games we should have won and this board will blow up for a bit. We may get some injuries that knock us off track for a bit. But when we look around in about TWO YEARS, things are gonna' be looking pretty good.

For now, enjoy the minimal traffic problems. Enjoy having plenty of leg room to spread out. Enjoy the short lines at concessions and restrooms. Take in the last few moments of listening to your co-workers be dismissive or "meh" at your MEAN GREEN, because things are about to change.

As this forum's title says..."Coach Mac is our leader and will take us to the promised land". We are starting to see the signs of this and in about two more years, it'll really begin to shine BRIGHT GREEN! Mark it!!

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Bill Snyder saw it coming all week in practice.

The missed tackles. The dropped passes. The lousy blocking, terrible execution and distressing lack of focus gave the Kansas State coach trepidation with North Texas coming to town.

If not for another gutsy performance by Collin Klein, and a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Tyler Locket, the No. 15 Wildcats might have been saddled with an embarrassing defeat before heading into next Saturday's showdown against fifth-ranked Oklahoma.

Instead, they managed to eke out a 35-21 victory on Saturday night.

''If you don't prepare yourself well then most anything can happen,'' Snyder said afterward. ''It was the attitude we took into the ballgame. There wasn't anything else to blame it on.''

Of course, Snyder was also quick to credit North Texas.

The Mean Green (1-2) scratched and clawed their way within 14-13 late in the third quarter before Klein hit and Tramaine Thompson for their second touchdown. John Hubert tacked on a TD run moments later, and Klein's fourth-quarter score allowed the Wildcats (3-0) to escape.

Albeit with a far less impressive showing than last week's 52-13 romp over Miami.

''North Texas is better than people think, first of all,'' said Klein, who passed for 230 yards and accounted for three scores. ''There was a lot of emotion coming off a big game, but the great teams are the exact same no matter who the opponent is.''

I'm just an alum and fan -- but I felt something tonight that I haven't felt in the entire time I have been following this program which dates back to 1988....

You can't expect to go into a hostile environment like #15 K-State and expect to be able to make mistakes or get any calls in your favor.

That said, I can honestly say after tonight - I feel better than I have since I can possibly remember (including 2002 when QB Andrew Smith was alive and we had won a bowl game against Cincy).

We performed well against the #15 team in the country tonight. In fact, I would argue we won the line of scrimmage against them.

There were two reviewed calls that I knew would end up against us -- you can't expect that to happen on the road on a paycheck game against a Big 12 team and Big 12 refs.

We are missing a few key pieces -- however, this team is so different from what we have become accustomed to. I applaud Coach Mac for building something special here. I applaud the players for an outstanding effort against.

If you are a North Texas fan you have to be thrilled about the change that is so apparent in this program right now. If there is one clear message from the game tonight it is that Coach Mac knows how to build a program. I shudder to think what this team will look like in just a couple of years. The change is now clearly been displayed on a national television broadcast cause believe me the OU fans and even the UT fans were watching this game to scout K-State If you are not on it now - -- you better get on the band wagon soon because it will be very full before the end of this season. The future is very VERY bright for this Mean Green football program!!!
