North Texas played its final game against Ryan Aplin on Saturday night when the Mean Green faced Arkansas State.

That’s good news for UNT, which has struggled mightily against the Red Wolves’ standout quarterback throughout his career.

The Mean Green’s 37-19 loss to ASU was just the latest example.

Aplin threw for 328 yards and two touchdowns and tacked on a rushing touchdown.

“There is nothing that he does that surprises me,” UNT head coach Dan McCarney said. “I’ve seen him now for two seasons. He does it consistently. He is a tremendous football player. He leads. He makes plays. When something bad happens, he doesn’t flinch. He has great presence. You can see if from the sidelines.”

UNT led twice in the first quarter but saw Aplin answer each time.

The Mean Green took a 2-0 lead when Rocky Hayes started to take the ball out of the end zone on the opening kickoff before kneeling on the ball behind the goal line. Officials ruled that Hayes had come out and awarded UNT a safety.

Aplin came right back and threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Julian Jones the next time ASU had the ball.

UNT took a 9-7 lead on Derek Thompson’s 2-yard touchdown run, but once again Aplin had an answer. He led ASU on a 10-play drive that produced a Brian Davis 39-yard field goal and then scored on a 5-yard run to put the Red Wolves up 16-9.

UNT never recovered.

There were a couple of good news tidbits to come out of today's Dan McCarney press conference. Here goes:

– The big news that came out of left field is that backup quarterback Brent Osborn is going to graduate this year and will not be back next season. Osborn never played much at UNT, but he is the Mean Green's No. 2 guy with Andrew McNulty spending the year as a redshirt. To me this is just another sign that Brock Berglund is going to make a run at the starting job next year.

Let me preface this by saying I have nothing but respect for Todd Dodge and the way he handled the situation he was in at UNT. Unlike Dickey - he left his post with class and dignity. I think we all wish him and his family well at Marble Falls.

The problem is he should have left a year earlier than he did; and I believe had we been able to make that change we would be a much stronger program now - and we wouldn't be leaving the Sun Belt in the manner as it appears that we may this season.

Dodge's record in his first three UNT seasons (2007-10) was 2-10, 1-11, 2-10... Dodge was dismissed in October of 2010 (his 4th season) after going 1-6.

Everyone, including Todd Dodge knew that after year three things were likely not going to turn around. I think Dodge was surprised that UNT granted him the fourth year rather than just pay out his 5-year guaranteed contract and move on. But, either one or some combination of Dr. Bataille and or The Board of Regents chose not to do this, and I don't know if we will ever know exactly why.

Some cite that giving Dodge an additional year would help them put together a more respectable package for the new coach, and allow for a significant increase in assistant salaries which were woefully light. Whatever you think the reason was, one thing is clear. A college football coach cannot recruit quality high school athletes when they know his contract term is not going to be renewed. 7 years of osing football hurts recruiting without a doubt but when parents know a coach will likely not be there for their son's 4-5 university experience they most often will take a pass. After two consecutive losing seasons Dodge was in a hole and he knew that time was not on his side. Especially with UNT's biggest capital expenditure ever - a new stadium - on the horizon.

So Dodge did what any other coach would do in that situation, he sold out juco. Unfortunately when he rolled the dice it was UNT's chips on the craps table. Dodge thought if he didn't win in 2009 (year 3) he would be gone...so in his 2009 signing class out of 21 he signed 8, again almost half of the entire class. Then, likely surprised that he was being given a pass for year 4 out of 22 signees 10 were jucos, again almost 50% of the entire class.

This is - in my opinion - the MAIN reason we are struggling as a program right now. As Tasty and others point out, it's certainly not the ONLY reason.

Preaching to the Choir

By NT1978, in GoMeanGreen.com,

Those 68 teams are better than most
Beat them and you can boast.

Mean Green, We have all paid our dues
I said Mean Green, no more need for the blues
I said, Mean Green, make those tournament dreams.
But you got to know this one thing.

No team does it all by their self.
I said, Mean Green, take your pride off the shelf,
And just go there, Pack the Pit on game days.
Even you can help in these ways.

It’s fun to play in the N-C-A-A
It’s fun to play in the N-C-A-A
They’ll have 68 teams beginning the test
Win out and you’re the best.

It’s fun to play in the N-C-A-A
It’s fun to play in the N-C-A-A

Those 68 teams are better than most
Beat them and you can boast

Mean Green, where are you going to be
I said, Mean Green there’s a game you should see
At the Super Pit, it’s the place to be seen
With so many other Mean Green

Mean Green, come on out for the show
I said, Mean Green, see how far we can go.
I said Mean Green, We have reason to cheer
And the reason will become clear

It’s fun to play in the N-C-A-A
It’s fun to play in the N-C-A-A
They’ll have 68 teams beginning the test
Win out and you’re the best.

N-C-A-A…It’s fun to play in the N-C-A-A
Mean Green, Mean Green, where are you going to be.
Mean Green, Mean Green, there’s a game you should see.

N-C-A-A…we want to play in the N-C-A-A
Mean Green, Mean Green, come on out for the show.
Mean Green, Mean Green, see how far we can go.

Game Stats

Murfreesboro, Tenn. (10/27/12) - Logan Kilgore threw for three touchdowns and rushed for one of his own to lead the Middle Tennessee football team to a 38-21 win against North Texas on Saturday afternoon at Floyd Stadium.

The Blue Raiders improve to 5-3 and 3-1 in the Sun Belt, while North Texas falls to 3-5 and 2-2 in the conference. North Texas leads the series, 7-5.

Middle Tennessee struck early and often, jumping out to a 24-0 halftime lead. The Blue Raiders capitalized on two Mean Green interceptions, and Kilgore threw three touchdowns in the first two quarters to put the Mean Green deep in a hole.

North Texas responded with two touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the first-half deficit. For the third straight game, the Mean Green was slow coming out of the gates, and unlike last week, was not able to make up the lost ground.

Kilgore passed for 349 yards and three touchdowns in the game. He completed 20 of his 30 passes, and rushed for a 45-yard touchdown. Kyle Griswould and Anthony both had 100-yard receiving days for the home team. The North Texas defense allowed 330 yards of passing in the first three quarters, which was more yards than the Mean Green had allowed through the air in any game this season.

The Blue Raiders did not let up in the second half, scoring 14 points in the third quarter. Reggie Whatley's 60-yard kick-off return at the start of the second half set up a Jordan Parker 4-yard touchdown run. Kilgore scored on his own, tucking and running for 45 yards midway through the third.

North Texas did not get on the scoreboard until the 10:20 mark in the third quarter. Antoinne Jimmerson scored from two yards out to cut the Middle Tennessee lead to 31-7. Darnell Smith set up the touchdown run with a career-high 41-yard reception that put the ball at the MT 12-yard line.
