football games this fall, beginning with the home opener against SMU on Sept. 6.
North Texas joins a growing list of schools already selling beer in public areas at athletic events. SMU announced it will
follow last season’s basketball introduction with beer sales at Gerald J. Ford Stadium this football season, and will join
Texas, Texas Tech, UT Arlington, UT-El Paso, UT-San Antonio and Houston as state universities that currently serve beer
at designated athletic events.
“We carefully studied all issues related to making beer available in Apogee Stadium, and from every angle, it makes
sense,” said UNT President Neal Smatresk. “At UNLV, my experience was that selling beer helped to more carefully
regulate alcohol consumption and encouraged more fans to watch the game in the stadium. It also cumulatively improved
revenues and had no negative impact on the overall experience of all fans.”
The athletics department, university administration, the office of risk management and University police were all part
of the collaborative effort to develop a plan to create an environment that will not negatively affect the enjoyment of the
game for any fans. Beer will only be sold in controlled areas of the stadium, away from the designated family fun area
under the north end zone stands.

Several of us media types and the Rangers are working together to hold the "Do It For Durrett" benefit concert on Monday, Sept. 8 at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth. All proceeds will go to a fund for the family of Richard Durrett, my colleague at the DRC, DMN and ESPN Dallas who died suddenly at 38 last month and left behind two young children and a pregnant wife.
The concert will feature some big-named local country/rock stars we can't mention in advance due to something called "radius clauses" as well as Old 97s front man Rhett Miller and Kessler Theater favorite Daphne Willis. There will also be a live and silent auctions with all kinds of awesome experiences and memorabilia donated from teams, colleges, etc.
Eric Capper and the good folks at North Texas stepped up big with a package that I think a lot of you folks would love to win.
Mean Green Package: The winner gets four club seats to a mutually-agreed upon football game for the 2014 season, including a parking pass and access to the field during pregame. It will also include North Texas helmet signed by head coach Dan McCarney and the 2014 highlight DVD, chronicling one of the most successful seasons in school history which was capped by win in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1.
You've got to be at the concert to bid. Tickets ($20 in advance, $30 at the door if they aren't sold out) can be bought on the Billy Bob's website.

You can get more info on the concert at doitfordurrett.com.
I hope to see a lot of you there. I'll be working the silent auction. Stop by, say hi and bid big.
Thanks,
Tim MacMahon

We've set up a campaign to raise at minimum, $10,000, maxing out at $24,000 because that would be the entire section. I set the minimum at $10,000 because honestly, for fewer than 100 seats, this isn't going to have the desired effect.
So if the campaign doesn't meet the minimum goal, nobody's card gets charged, we all take our balls and go home, no harm, no foul.
If the campaign reaches $10,000, I will collect the money via crowdtilt and purchase the tickets through the recent alumni program via Eddie Delgado.
I will assume no responsibility for ticket distribution. Christopher Walker has (by nomination) volunteered to be master distributor of tickets. I figure, he's young, he's got the connections, he lives in Denton, and his beard is glorious. What could possibly go wrong there?
The campaign is set to end mid-day on July 27th. We've got 29 days, ladies and gentlemen. Lets fill apogee and keep our little home field advantage alive and well!
