No Bowling for Young Men

By Harry, in GoMeanGreen.com,

Not to pour salt into the wound or anything, but we should have won this game. And not in a sour grapes sort of way. More like the kind of way where an official tells another that the had a clear line of sight when he knows he didn't.

Lance Dunbar scored on the second goal line attempt in the third quarter. He was laying on a defensive player, reached the ball across the goal line, and scored. But an official came in from the far side, waving his arms like he saw Lance's knee down. Here's the truth, as borne out by video replay: it wasn't.

Here's the thing: if the ball, for any reason, ends up in the end zone, it is probably worth a look, guys. And, Coach Mac, you might want to have a guy stationed near a replay machine who can tell you to challenge the play when the refs blow one and are convinced they got it right. Or, better yet, just kick the dang field goal and tie the game up.

But even in this, where you were clearly robbed of a touchdown, you lose the right to complain when you can't figure out how to keep a guy between the end zone and the deepest receiver. There are some games where the zebras just can't get out of their own way (what the hell was that "illegal touching" call at the end of the first half?), but if you had made more plays in the game, you don't leave the game in their hands. And I expect that's one thing the coaches are telling their players tonight.

Great win for the MG last Saturday. It was interesting to read a thread on the board this week talking about what team you like to see UNT defeat the most in football. For me, it’s Troy, with MTSU a close second. Don’t like how they recruit, and love to hate ‘em.

So, for what that’s worth, it was terrific to see UNT pretty much dominate the Trojans last week, and make no mistake—when you complete over 80% of your passes and deliver the run game with your backups—you are dominating the game. It wasn’t really rocket science for UNT, as Troy can’t stop anybody’s offense, but North Texas took care of their business and grabbed the W. Many (if not most) times in the last few years, that game would have slipped through UNT’s fingers for the L at the last minute.

Speaking of dislike—WKU is moving right up there. I think they play with a cockiness that is undeserved in a lot of ways, as they haven’t (until now) busted a proverbial grape in the SBC, but whatever. Maybe this year is their year to really get their program going at the higher level of college football.

In analyzing this matchup—which is another close one—I think they have to wait another week to take another step up the cockiness ladder.

The turbines themselves cost about $1 million, with the second million used for construction costs and other fees, Helixon said, adding that the return on investment will be surpassed because the turbines are funded by a grant.

“That, in conjunction with the design of the stadium and the new buildings UNT is constructing to be energy-efficient, will significantly reduce energy costs,” she said. “At some point, the turbines will pay for themselves. They have about a 25-year lifespan before major repairs are needed.”

After the turbines are constructed, they must go through a commissioning process to ensure they are safe and work properly. The turbines are expected to be finished in a few weeks and functioning by Dec. 31.

“Well, I hope the wind is blowing that day,” Helixon said. “It’s going to be really exciting. We’ve gone through a long process. It started in 2009 with us finding the grant and applying for it and then bringing all the stakeholders together. I think it’ll be a day when everyone can stand back and say, ‘Look at what we did.’”

UNT Earns 4th Victory

By Harry, in GoMeanGreen.com,

TROY, Ala. — There might not have been enough footballs in Veterans Memorial Stadium to fulfill the promise North Texas head coach Dan McCarney made to his team Saturday following a milestone 38-33 win over Troy.

McCarney stood up in the middle of a raucous locker room and promised every senior who was there a game ball of his own to remember the day.

And there was a lot to remember.

UNT picked up its first win on the road in the McCarney era, toppled five-time defending Sun Belt champion Troy for the first time since 2003 and kept alive its hopes of winning six games and becoming bowl-eligible.

The Mean Green (4-6, 3-3 Sun Belt) now has won more games than it has in any season since 2004, the last time UNT went to a bowl game.

“It’s a huge win for us,” McCarney said “[Troy] is a championship program and the standard in our conference. They show how to win and do things the right way. With all the players who were injured or went down today, for us to rise up and make the plays to win makes this one of the really special things I have been a part of.”

The Hilltoppers get back to Sun Belt Conference action this Saturday, making their first-ever trip to Apogee Stadium to face North Texas. WKU in in search of its first win over UNT, as the Mean Green have won each of the four all-time meetings. A victory would give the Hilltoppers six wins on the season, making them bowl eligible for the first time since becoming a full-fledged FBS member in 2009.

The game will be televised live at 6 p.m. (CST) on the Sun Belt Network, and will be available locally in Bowling Green on WKYU-PBS.

Back To Business - After stepping out of conference last Saturday to face the #1 team in the country, the Hilltoppers return to Sun Belt Conference action for the last two weeks with the goal of getting bowl eligible and possibly still winning at least a share of the league championship. WKU (5-1) sits in sole possession of second place in the league, trailing only undefeated Arkansas State (6-0). Currently, 55 teams are bowl eligible, with 22 more teams - including WKU - sitting at five wins on the season.

Texas Tech is showing 1 Senior and 3 Jr transfers on their roster (2 Juco guys and one from York College). The only holdovers from last year's game are Jaye Crockett (who I recall had a great game against us) and Javarez Willis who I believe we were close to signing before he went to a prep school and signed with Tech (Tasty/NT03/Cooley/et al. correct me if I'm wrong).

It looks like Gillespie is going to let them run. I'm not sure if Johnny will play that style with him, but if he does, this game could turn into a barn-burner. Part of me would almost like to see this happen just because I'd love to see what Chris Jones and Trey Norris can do when the tempo is super fast. Also, I think Jordan would just kill in an uptempo game.

There is SO MUCH YOUTH in this game that it's really impossible to tell what's going to happen...

What do you guys think?

I think the Franklin effect will loom large and UNT gets this win on the road. Tech has played some wild, high-scoring games so far this year, but they haven't seen a defense like this yet.
