the concern about" UNT "on helment, i'm told, is that unless you are from Texas and surrounding area, you might not know what it stands for. personaly, i would like the eagle talon on the helment. i have never seen one, it is different, and i think our current eagle look like charlie the chicken hawk from the fog horn/leg horn cartoons of my childhood.just an old mans opinion.

In a meangreensports chat room a while back (during the Spring Game, signing day, or something else) one of the green gang hinted that there would be different helmets used this year and that they wouldn't be white. Does anyone else remember this? I haven't seen anything mentioned since then and was wondering if anyone else has heard anything.

Go Mean Green and Go Fouts Fireworks tonight!

I believe they said next year we will have new helmets to go along with the new stadium

I like the green, but can't stand that the helmets still say "North Texas" on them instead of having the SOW.

Green helmet = good. Green helmet with SOW = best.

Ugh...what's so hard about slapping a SOW sticker on there? It would look A LOT sharper!

Off topic, but I really hope when we get our baseball team that we put North Texas in cursive across the chest.

I, too, would rather have the SOW.

Hopefully this is a second helmet for the all-white road uniforms, as it doesn't seem to go with the green jerseys.

I'd rather have white helmets with the original flying worm. I never liked the green helmets.

Im superstitious, we were 5-31 with the white helmets. Bring on the green helmets, now we will be 31-5 the next 3 years.

If we are using superstition as our basis for selecting our helmets then we need to go back to the original flying worm helmets that we wore when Hayden Fry was the coach. Wearing those helmets and uniforms under Fry we were 40-23, with wins over Tennessee, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Louisville, Houston, SMU, Southern Miss, UTEP, and San Diego State. During those years we also had some really close loses to Texas by 3, and Florida State by 1. In 1977 North Texas went 10-1. If we could win like that I say lets bring back the entire uniform.

The Houston win came in 1975 (28-0). The next year Houston won the SWC title.

Bring back the flying worm!

With Mike Leach as HC it could happen. Money won't be his motivation for 2011 once he wins his case against TT and plunders that foremost of Pirates, Craig ( on the take) James!!! :o:o You want to talk about a showman and some exciting football, we should be in Key West negotiating now.

+1 Ahh the glory years.

Maybe it was the Green Helmets tho.

At any rate, I like the same color from head to toe.

I like this helmet. I'm tired of the white helmets and I"m against putting the SOW on our helmets. If we were nationally recognizable, then fine, but we aren't. The only way I know a Maryland is in a game is seeing Terps on the side of their helmet. With the SOW on our helmet we are old school Philly look-a-likes and go by the name Northern Texas or Northern Texas State. I say keem NORTH TEXAS on the helmet!

Leach is a great coach, but he is also comes off as a real jerk on T.V. I just don't like him. Under a worst case scenario (6-6 or worse) where we had to hire a new coach, this would be my top 5, and why:

1. Mark Mangino- .510 winning percentage- took a bottom feeder of the Big 12 and made them respectable. Not as annoying as Leach. Mangino also knows how to recruit Texas, and would bring lots of free publicity to North Texas. On the downside- scandal, but maybe we could get him cheap.

2. Jim Leavitt- .625 winning percentage- built South Florida from nothing into a Big East power. A proven winner at the highest level. Maybe reunite him and coach Canales. Leavitt would also bring publicity to our school. On the downside- same as Mangino.

*3. Jerry Kill- .642 winning percentage- has built winners everywhere he has been and kept them winning at a high level (by season 4 every team he has coached has won 9 games a season or better for every season while he was their coach). Inherited a 2-10 Northern Ill team and turned them into a 6-7 team in his first season, and 7-6 in his second. In his coaching carrier, Kill has never had a losing season after recording a winning season with a team. Makes $344,773 a season, so he should be in our price range. My favorite of the lesser known coaches. On the downside- can't find a downside.

4. Pat Hill- .642 winning percentage- solid coach with a history of winning. On the downside- Hasn't had Fresno as an elite non-AQ power in about a decade, and make almost $1,000,000 a season.

5. Dave Clawson- .541 winning percentage- Like Kill, Clawson has won everywhere he has coached. On the downside- hasn't won for as long or as much as other coaches on this list.

Almost every TV game I've ever seen, we're still called North Texas State at least once. People remember logos before they do words; it's not like we're a household name after the early 2000s.

If football were like basketball or baseball where you're expected to have the name of your team/school plastered across the front of your jersey, I would completely agree with you. Truth is in FBS and the NFL, most teams have a logo on the helmet. Spelling everything out looks bush league to me and it's not even legible on TV unless it's a close-up. To each their own.

We haven't done crap in the white helmets, lets try the green and see how we do. I still like an interlocking "NT" with the bottom right N, locking with the top left T.

Since the university has spent so much time and money branding the academic side of itself "UNT", does anyone know why the athletic department labels its teams "North Texas"? The inconsistency has always seemed strange to me given the publicity that the athletic department can attract.
