Perry Carter is a hell of an upgrade. Made Kareem Jackson a serviceable CB. Straight from the NFL to here. nfl's #1 statistical defense last year, BTW.

Please explain this claim. I thought that title was earned by Seahawk?

Good hire, either way.

My bad, #7. We dropped a lot towards the end of the season apparently. Haha.

Can he recruit?

Big part of the job. Only question I have about the hire.

Perhaps he is talking about 2012 and not last year. Cause ya the Texans D last year was atrocious.

Good hire to bring in NFL experience.

That's valid -- however, with Mac knowing one of them as a coach and based on his connections I am going to say the answer is yes. I think we know Perry can coach... there is a question as to Hicks since he hasn't been coaching long but Mac knows this guy very well...I would trust his jugement on that.

We have added two guys that both have made it to the big show...one who has coached in the NFL. That's just extremely impressive to me. When you can go into a kids home and tell him that you have coached or played in the NFL...that's pretty powerful stuff.

Remember -- neither Walters or Joseph had sterling recruiting resume's. Frankly Gaines had more of the "recruiting" reputation... so I am optimistic about these hires...actually I am thrilled about these hires! GMG!

#7 in the NFL, dropped mostly in the later weeks. No Cushing. Don't bother bringing up points when the teams were getting 14 points off turnovers every week.

So not atrocious.

Good points. Being an NFL player and coach should go a long way with kids.

Yup. Huge upgrade. Mac never disappoints, should've had more faith in him.

When you factor in landing Kevin Patrick, and now Hicks and Carter, you have to be really excited about where we are. Fingers crossed we will keep Perry, Wintrich and the rest. This is as good a staff as I can ever recall us as having at UNT. There is stability with Mac's extension. We have a lot to be excited about here!

I'd be interested to know how these hires play into the Mac extension. Is part of the delay due to a negotiation over department budget for assistant salaries

Hopefully, the staff is secure now that we're less than a week from spring practice!

I had the same thought that Mac's contract could also involve the assistants' salaries. Iowa State fans will tell you that a big problem Mac had was keeping assistants and replacing them. In some ways North Texas would be a better coaching job than Iowa State. Coaching at North Texas gives you a much better chance of winning than at Iowa State and you get to build up recruiting contacts in Texas. The stability with Mac's contract should tell a coach that he could be here for awhile if he's tired of moving around to different coaching jobs each year and worrying if the entire staff will be fired after each season.

Who is filling which spot?

Perry - Safeties, Hicks - CB's?

Perry, coming from the NFL is awesome. Hopefully he can learn the recruiting game quickly.

Hicks, coming from Concordia University (and not the one in TX)... Not sure what he brings to the table other than being in the NFL, and knowing coach McCarney. This hire hints that we're not planning on increasing the salary for Gaines'/Walters'/Hicks' spot. Hopefully he's ready for D-1 coaching/recruiting. I think he's more of a question mark.
