The talent level used as a point for differentiation is arbitrary, but star ratings are much more important for other things.. Marketing, positive mentions, brand positioning and of course the classic snowball view in the internet driven recruiting cycle goes a long way to provide value for the star rankings

Yes, some kids come from nowhere and turn into great college athletes. They are the exception to the rule.

Glad to see two 3 star recruits on board, and hopefully it is a sign that recruiting is picking up.

On Rivals it depends who offers and where the player commits. Chad Davis was a 3 star last year until he committed to us, and Payton Hendrix has been a 2-star all year until Notre Dame offered yesterday. Now he is a 3 star.

Two more than we had all of last year.

And two less than 2012.

This is a little more recent. Two years ago Rod Lancaster only had an offer from us and was a 3 star, and Nick Schrapps only had us and an Air Force offer yet was still a 3-star.

scout and rivals look at it in tiers. Instead of just looking at the talent of the prospect, they also consider offers and other players at that position.

Lets say 2015 is a down year in high school talent for Qbs. The top schools will still go after the best of that group. The top 10 in the nation will probably be 4 star, even if they would have been a 3 star in a previous class loaded with a lot of good qbs. They have a set amount of how many can be at a certain level. A lot of the early rankings is based on demand for the player and what school they anticipate the player going to.

They also move star ratings depending on where the player commits making Rivals system pretty worthless or unreliable.

Star ratings are worthless...

Unless the kid signs with NT...then they're the most objective standard.

I don't place any more faith in this year's class than last year's class until they prove it on the field/court. I think we have seen star ratings in several NT sports to be a poor predictor to wins.

I would rather judge a class by the number of W's instead of stars.

Amen. Stars rate potential based upon high school production. 4 and 5's are pretty much can't miss. 3 and below, wait for production. Edited August 3, 2013 by UNTLifer
