odus redding would sound good if he were still alive and had $20million for nameing rights.

I wouldn't mind if Anheuser-Busch or Miller Brewing Company bought the rights. :thumbsu:

This. No matter how romantic you may think any given name sounds, I would wager that the stadium, the suites, the club level, the field goal posts, the turf, the sidelines, the endzone wing and the alumni pavilion get named for the highest bidder. Until those things get done, I would guess it'll just be the new stadium at UNT.

Odus Mitchell would certainly be a name worthy to call the Field but there would have to be a campaign to raise X million to get that done. There's too many dollars required these days to honor a person, regardless of how worthy.

Odus Mitchell was a remarkable man. After his retirement he still attended home games until he passed away at age 90. He had two sons who were letterwinners (one football; one basketball). I can't find an address for Shields so I assume that he's deceased. Joe, the basketball player, is a retired airlines pilot and lives in Granbury.

One name that needs to be considered for some recognition at the stadium is Bill Miller. I will let you detectives find out who I am referencing and why. I'll post later the answer to my nomination of Bill Miller.

If someone's not paying for the name I like it as is; Mean Green Stadium.

Someone should pay for the naming rights to the stadium, but I would prefer the field be named in Coach Mitchell's honor.

Personally, I'd like Joe Greene Field at Odus Mitchell Memorial Stadium. But, I realize that makes too much sense because it acknowledges the head coach with the best all-time record for us, as well as our most recognizable and most highly decorated football alumnus.

But, I'm the crazy one who thinks that because we are UNT, we should have UNT on our helmets. I've obviously lost my mind.

I personally would not feel bad if the stadium was named

Hayden Fry Stadium for the coach who helped us beat Tennessee

and helped to bring us to a great period in North Texas History.

Florida plays at Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Ben Hill Griffin was a citrus magnate who donated a lot of money to UF.

  • Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium has Joe Jamail Field.
  • Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium
  • War Memorial Stadium (in Arkansas) has AT&T Field
  • Commonwealth Stadium (in Kentucky) has C.M. Newton Field
  • Neyland Stadium has Shields-Watkins Field
  • Vanderbilt Stadium at Dudley Field
  • Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field
  • Jordan–Hare Stadium has Pat Dye Field
  • Vaught-Hemingway Stadium at Hollingsworth Field
  • Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium has Wagner Field
  • Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium
  • Jack Trice Stadium used to be named "Cyclone Stadium" with the only the field known as "Jack Trice Field"
  • Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium at Owen Field
  • Memorial Stadium (in Illinois) has Zuppke Field

And that's just the Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC.

I have a friend who is an Aggie and since we both live in Austin and have to listen to UNT alum Craig Way, we have a good laugh at the Horns expense.

Yes – you really make too much sense for this board – UNT under our Green Bird would be a very good logo for the helmets but do not think that will ever happen.

Mitchell was a great coach – for his last game against Tulsa the team scored 42 points for his 42 years of service – that was fun to watch.

No one will pay millions of our naming rights so we will likely end up with a stadium name of - The Ballpark at Denton

See you at the Ballpark

Bill Miller was the SGA President in '90 or '91 who was the driving force to get student service fees increased to pay for Fouts to be expanded to the 30,000+ that it now seats. This was a tremendous milestone in our football history, as we needed to go to a 30,000 seat stadium to qualify to upgrade back to division one football. Had Miller not been successful in getting the added seats paid for by student service fees, we might have been stuck in I-AA. That, of course, means that we certainly would not have been able to elevate back to D One and a new stadium would have been a mute point.

We honored a previous Athletic Director for over 50 years with Fouts Field. I am absolutely sold on Rick Villarreal Park or the RV PARK. There is no previous AD that has done so much to improve all of the athletic scene at North Texas as Rick Villarreal.
